Check your existing laptop before buying a replacement. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025: Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for the operating system after that date. Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check and the Windows Update eligibility check first. If the only problem is a disabled TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot setting, you may be able to keep the laptop. If the processor is unsupported, or the machine cannot meet the memory or storage requirements, replacement is the practical route.
Start with compatibility, not shopping
A Windows 10 laptop falls into one of three useful categories:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Eligible now: Windows 11 can be installed after normal updates and preparation.
- Eligible after a firmware change: The hardware appears suitable, but TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot is disabled in UEFI firmware.
- Not eligible: The processor is unsupported, or the laptop cannot satisfy the memory or storage requirements. Treat this as a replacement decision rather than trying to force an upgrade.
This sequence prevents an expensive mistake. A new laptop is justified when a hard requirement fails, not merely because an upgrade prompt is inconvenient. It also avoids spending money on a machine that has the same compatibility problem a year from now.
Windows 11 requirements that actually decide the upgrade
Microsoft’s current minimums are the gatekeepers. They are not performance recommendations; they are eligibility thresholds.
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
| Component or condition | Windows 11 minimum | What it means when checking a laptop |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Compatible 64-bit CPU, 1 GHz or faster, with at least two cores | The model must be on Microsoft’s supported processor list. Clock speed and core count are designed into the processor and are not normal laptop upgrades. |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | Four gigabytes is only the floor. For a replacement intended to last, target 16 GB when the configuration and budget allow. |
| Storage | 64 GB | This is the minimum device capacity, not a recommendation for a comfortable working system. Leave room for Windows, applications and personal files. |
| Firmware | UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability | A compatible laptop can still fail the check if Secure Boot is disabled or the firmware is configured in a legacy mode. |
| Security module | TPM 2.0 | TPM may be present but disabled. The setting name differs by manufacturer. |
| Initial setup | Internet access and a Microsoft account for Windows 11 Home and personal-use Pro setup | Plan for an internet connection and the account credentials during first-run setup. |
Meeting the four-gigabyte and 64-gigabyte minimums does not make a laptop a good long-term purchase. Modern browsers, video calls and productivity software can consume considerably more than the minimum, so memory capacity and storage headroom belong in the buying decision even when the Windows 11 checker reports a pass.
How to test your current Windows 10 laptop
1. Run PC Health Check
Install and open Microsoft’s PC Health Check app, then select the Windows 11 eligibility check. Microsoft describes it as a comprehensive check for Windows 10 devices and says it can identify compatibility issues that temporarily delay an upgrade. Read the specific reason, not just the pass or fail headline.
The app is especially useful after a hardware change. Microsoft says the easiest way to see whether a device meets the requirements after hardware changes is with PC Health Check. A result that names a setting is a different situation from one that names an unsupported processor.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2. Confirm the Windows Update result
In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates. Windows may display a separate Windows 11 eligibility message. Use that result alongside PC Health Check; either screen can reveal a different blocking condition.
Install available Windows 10 updates before testing again, then restart. A pending restart or incomplete update can make the status look less clear than it should.
3. Record the reason for failure
Write down the exact component named by the checker. The distinction matters:
- TPM 2.0 missing or disabled: Check the manufacturer’s UEFI instructions. The module may use a vendor-specific name.
- Secure Boot disabled: Confirm that the system supports UEFI Secure Boot, then follow the manufacturer’s procedure.
- Unsupported processor: Move toward replacement. Microsoft states that processor clock speed and core count are inherent to the processor design and are not considered upgradable components.
- Insufficient RAM or storage: Determine whether the laptop has accessible upgrade slots and whether the manufacturer supports the required capacity. If not, replacement is simpler and safer.
When a firmware setting is the only problem
Changing UEFI settings can turn an otherwise suitable laptop into an eligible Windows 11 device, but it is not a casual toggle. Before entering firmware setup, make a complete backup to an external SSD or hard drive and ensure you can recover your files if the system fails to boot.

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- Back up documents, photos, browser data and any application files you cannot replace.
- Read the laptop manufacturer’s support instructions for enabling TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot on your exact model.
- Enter UEFI setup using the manufacturer’s documented key or Windows recovery path; the key and menu names vary.
- Enable only the required setting, save the change and restart.
- Run PC Health Check again and confirm that the result changed before starting the upgrade.
Do not copy a setting name from a different laptop family. TPM controls may be labelled as a firmware security device, platform trust technology or another vendor-specific term. If the manufacturer’s documentation does not clearly cover the model, leave the firmware unchanged and obtain technical help.
When replacement is the right answer
An unsupported CPU is the clearest stop sign. Microsoft explicitly says the one-gigahertz clock requirement and two-core requirement are inherent to processor design and are not upgradable components. A laptop cannot become compliant through a driver, registry edit or extra memory when its processor is outside the supported list.
Replacement is also appropriate when:
- The laptop has less than 4 GB of RAM and the memory is soldered or otherwise not upgradeable.
- The internal storage cannot reach 64 GB, or the device has no practical upgrade path.
- The system has no UEFI Secure Boot capability or no TPM 2.0 support.
- A firmware change would leave you without a reliable recovery plan.
- The cost of proprietary memory, storage or repair approaches the cost of a current Windows 11 laptop.
Do not use unofficial bypasses as a substitute for a supported machine. They can leave the device outside Microsoft’s normal eligibility and support expectations, and they do not solve an aging battery, worn keyboard or failing storage.
What to look for in a replacement laptop
Every listing should be read as a specific configuration, not as a promise about an entire product family. Record the exact processor, RAM, SSD capacity, display, operating system edition and sales region before ordering.
Processor and Windows 11 status
Choose a configuration explicitly sold with Windows 11, then verify the processor model rather than relying on a series name. Two laptops with the same family name can use different CPUs, and processor support is model-specific. A Windows 11 Pro label is useful evidence that the listed configuration is intended for the operating system, but it is still worth checking the exact SKU.
Memory: make 16 GB the longevity target
Microsoft’s minimum is 4 GB, but that is not a sensible target for a replacement expected to remain useful. Aim for 16 GB where possible. Check whether the memory is soldered, whether an empty slot exists, and what maximum capacity the manufacturer documents. A nominally inexpensive laptop can be a poor value if its RAM cannot be expanded.
Storage: capacity, type and replaceability
Windows 11 requires at least 64 GB of storage, but the operating system, updates, applications and personal files all need space. Prioritize an SSD and verify whether it is replaceable. Keep the capacity decision tied to your data: a person who stores large media libraries needs a different amount of room from someone who works mainly in cloud services. If you plan to migrate the old drive or keep a local backup, confirm that the new laptop has a suitable internal or external connection.

Display and ergonomics
Check the panel resolution, brightness information, surface finish and viewing angle in the exact listing. A sharp, readable display can matter more than a small processor difference for writing, spreadsheets and remote work. If you travel, compare the screen size and total weight with the charger included in your bag.

Look for a keyboard layout that matches your region, adequate key travel and a touchpad you can use without an external mouse. For meetings, verify the webcam specification and microphone arrangement instead of assuming that every current laptop offers the same image quality. A privacy shutter is a practical feature if the listing includes one.
Battery and charging
Battery-life claims are highly dependent on screen brightness, software, workload and test method. No universal test in the available evidence establishes one laptop as the best performer. Treat the manufacturer’s stated figure as a condition-dependent estimate, and prioritize battery capacity, charging connector, included charger and the ability to obtain a replacement battery when those details are documented.
Ports and wireless connectivity
Count the ports you actually use: USB-A accessories, USB-C charging or display output, an external monitor connection, wired networking, an audio jack and a memory-card reader. Port selection often cannot be changed after purchase, whereas a dock or adapter adds cost and another item to carry.
Warranty and regional support
Confirm the warranty length, service location, return window and keyboard layout for your country. Product pages and stock can differ by region, and a configuration shown in one market may not be sold in another. Keep the exact model or part number with your purchase records.

Lenovo’s ThinkPad E14 Gen 6 is a concrete starting point because Lenovo lists Windows 11 Pro configurations on both its AMD and Intel product pages. That makes the model relevant to a Windows 10 replacement search, but it does not make every E14 Gen 6 listing identical.
Lenovo’s PSREF documentation warns that specifications vary by region and can change. Before buying, verify the exact SKU’s:

Match the laptop to the way you work
Office, school and web work
Prioritize 16 GB of RAM, a comfortable keyboard, a readable display, dependable webcam and microphone hardware, and enough SSD capacity for local files. A lighter chassis and USB-C charging can be more valuable than a high-end processor if you travel between classrooms, offices or meeting rooms.

Memory and storage expandability deserve extra attention because development tools, virtual machines and local containers can consume both. Verify the keyboard layout, external-monitor support, wired networking options and the manufacturer’s maximum RAM before purchase.
Photo, video and large-file work
Start with display characteristics, storage capacity and the ability to attach fast external storage. Confirm the webcam and ports if the laptop will also serve as a communication workstation. Do not infer editing performance from a Windows 11 label alone; compare the exact processor, memory and storage configuration.
Frequent travel
Compare weight, charger size, battery specifications, hinge construction, service coverage and port selection. A very small laptop may require adapters, while a larger model may provide more comfortable typing and easier servicing. Make the trade-off against the equipment you already carry.
Back up and move to the new machine safely
- Inventory the old laptop. List applications, browser profiles, password-manager access, local email archives, game saves and files stored outside your usual folders.
- Create an external backup. Use an external SSD or hard drive sized for the data you actually need to preserve. Open several files from the backup to confirm that it is readable.
- Prepare account access. Confirm your Microsoft account credentials and any two-factor authentication method before beginning Windows 11 setup.
- Install the new laptop’s updates. Connect to the internet, apply Windows and manufacturer updates, restart when requested and check Windows Update again.
- Restore in stages. Copy essential documents first, then photos and less frequently used data. Reinstall applications from their legitimate installers rather than copying program folders.
- Keep the old laptop intact temporarily. Do not erase it until you have opened important files, signed into essential services and confirmed that your backup is complete.
Windows 11 Home and personal-use Pro setup require internet access and a Microsoft account. Arrange both before starting so setup does not stop at the account screen.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Common mistakes that create unnecessary expense
- Shopping before testing: You may replace a laptop that only needs a documented firmware setting enabled.
- Trusting a family name: CPU, RAM, SSD, display and operating system edition can vary within one model line.
- Treating minimums as targets: Four gigabytes of RAM and 64 GB of storage satisfy the threshold but leave little room for normal use.
- Assuming a faster clock fixes compatibility: Windows 11 processor support depends on the supported CPU model, not just a number printed in a listing.
- Changing firmware without a backup: A setting change can affect boot behavior, and recovery is much easier when your files already exist elsewhere.
- Deleting the old system immediately: Keep the old laptop or its verified backup until migration is complete.
- Using an unsupported bypass as a purchase strategy: It does not repair an aging machine and leaves you outside the normal supported path.
A final purchase checklist
- PC Health Check result recorded for the current laptop.
- Windows Update eligibility result checked after pending updates and restart.
- Exact reason for any failure identified.
- TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot checked against the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Processor model verified against Microsoft’s supported requirements.
- Replacement configuration lists the exact CPU, RAM, SSD, display and Windows edition.
- RAM and SSD upgradeability checked in the manufacturer’s documentation.
- Regional price, stock, keyboard layout, warranty and return terms confirmed.
- External backup completed and tested before an upgrade or firmware change.
- Internet access and Microsoft account ready for Windows 11 Home or personal-use Pro setup.
Bottom line
Run PC Health Check first. Keep the laptop if it passes, make only a documented TPM or Secure Boot change if that is the sole blocker, and replace it when the processor or another hard requirement cannot be upgraded. For a replacement such as the ThinkPad E14 Gen 6, judge the exact regional SKU—not the family name—against Windows 11 eligibility, 16 GB memory target, SSD capacity and upgradeability, display, keyboard, ports, battery, webcam and warranty.
