Best Laptop Under $300 in 2026: ASUS Chromebook CX15 and Smart Buying Guide

Best overall for a hard $300 budget: the ASUS Chromebook CX15 (2026), preferably an 8GB configuration when a genuine sale keeps the exact model below $300. It is a good fit for browser work, streaming, video calls and documents, but it is not a replacement for a Windows laptop if you need traditional Windows desktop software.

Quick verdict: the ASUS Chromebook CX15 is the strongest starting point

For a US shopper who cannot exceed $300, the ASUS Chromebook CX15 (2026) is the clearest current pick for everyday computing. RTINGS named it the best laptop under $300 in its September 30, 2026 update, citing its availability and practical clamshell design. The useful configuration is the one you can actually buy: the regular CX15 family includes models with up to 8GB of memory, but listings can differ by processor, storage, memory and seller.

Choose the CX15 if your routine is mostly Chrome tabs, email, Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 on the web, streaming video, video meetings and light document work. Choose something else if you require a Windows-only accounting package, desktop database, engineering tool, full Adobe application or another program that cannot run as a web or Android app.

The principal compromise is quality rather than basic functionality. RTINGS reports a washed-out display, a touchpad that can miss movements and battery life that may not last a full workday. A Tom’s Guide web-browsing test measured 7 hours 26 minutes with the screen set to 150 nits over Wi‑Fi; that is a publication test result, not a guaranteed runtime for every CX15 configuration or workload.

#1 Best Overall
ASUS 2026 15" FHD IPS Chromebook, Intel Processor Up to 2.80GHz, 4GB DDR4, 128GB Storage, HDMI, Super-Fast WiFi, Chrome OS, Pastel Blue, Renewed
  • Intel Processor Up to 2.80GHz, 4GB DDR4, 128GB Storage
  • 15" FHD IPS Display, Intel UHD Graphics
  • 1x USB Type C, 1 x USB Type A, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack, HDMI
  • Super Fast WiFi and Bluetooth, Integrated Webcam
  • Chrome OS, AC Charger Included, Pastel Blue

What you should expect from a $300 laptop

A sub-$300 machine can be perfectly serviceable when the workload is browser-centered. ChromeOS starts quickly, updates in the background and keeps most work in the browser. It also supports Android and web apps. The trade-off is that you are buying into an operating system and software model, not simply buying a cheaper Windows computer.

  • Good matches: web browsing, streaming services, email, online classes, Google Docs, web-based Microsoft 365, social media, video calls and simple cloud-based administration.
  • Possible with care: many open tabs, Android apps, large spreadsheets and multitasking. Memory capacity matters, and ChromeOS can unload background tabs when available memory fills.
  • Poor matches: software that requires a conventional Windows or macOS installation, demanding games, professional video editing, high-end photo work and large local media libraries.

Lenovo’s Chromebook guidance similarly describes these computers as web- and cloud-focused, with Google ecosystem integration, while warning that software compatibility and local storage can be limiting. Treat that as a product-category explanation, not as an independent Windows-versus-Chromebook performance test.

ASUS Chromebook CX15 (2026): specifications, strengths and weaknesses

Attribute What is established What to verify on the listing
Form factor 15.6-inch clamshell laptop Exact model/SKU and hinge or keyboard layout
Display Tom’s Guide lists a 15.6-inch Full HD panel (1920 × 1080) Panel specification for the particular listing; brightness and color quality
Keyboard Full-size keyboard with a number pad Regional layout and whether the number pad is included
Memory Regular CX15 family listed by ASUS up to 8GB; 4GB and 8GB configurations are discussed by RTINGS Installed memory, because a family name does not identify a configuration
Operating system ChromeOS ChromeOS update-support information for the exact device
Connectivity RTINGS notes useful ports and HDMI or USB-C monitor connectivity Port count and connector types on the exact SKU
Battery evidence 7 hours 26 minutes in Tom’s Guide’s Wi‑Fi browsing test at 150 nits Real runtime for your brightness, apps, calls and battery condition
Price An 8GB version may fall below $300 during sales Live price, tax, shipping, seller, condition and return policy

Why the CX15 works for basic use

The large 15.6-inch chassis gives you a conventional laptop layout instead of a tiny travel keyboard. Its number pad is helpful for budgets, forms and spreadsheets, while the HDMI or USB-C display options make a desk monitor possible. ChromeOS handles ordinary browser and document tasks without the maintenance burden associated with a traditional desktop operating system.

Where the CX15 falls short

Do not buy it expecting a vivid creator display. RTINGS describes the screen as washed out, and a low-cost panel can be particularly disappointing in bright rooms or for photo work. The touchpad may miss movements, so cursor control can feel inconsistent. Battery endurance is workload-dependent; long video meetings, high brightness and many active tabs can consume charge faster than a light browsing loop.

4GB or 8GB: which CX15 configuration should you buy?

Memory is the most important configuration decision. RTINGS considers 4GB workable when you keep to a few tabs and apps. It is the minimum sensible choice for a very light user, but ChromeOS may unload background tabs as memory pressure rises. That means a page you left open can refresh when you return to it.

ASUS 2026 15" FHD IPS Chromebook, Intel Processor Up to 2.80GHz, 4GB DDR4, 128GB Storage, HDMI, Super-Fast WiFi, Chrome OS, Pastel Silver (Renewed)
  • Intel Processor Up to 2.80GHz, 4GB DDR4, 128GB Storage
  • 15" FHD IPS Display, Intel UHD Graphics
  • 1x USB Type C, 1 x USB Type A, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack, HDMI
  • Fast WiFi and Bluetooth, Integrated Webcam
  • Chrome OS, AC Charger Included, Pastel Silver

An 8GB CX15 gives you more room for simultaneous tabs, a video call, a document and background services. It is the preferred target when a real sale places the exact configuration below your ceiling. Do not pay for “CX15” based on the family name alone: ASUS lists both Chromebook CX15 and Chromebook Plus CX15 products, with different processor and memory ranges. The Plus family is listed up to 16GB, but that does not mean every Plus listing is under $300.

  • Buy 4GB only when your use is light, your tab count is modest and the saving is meaningful.
  • Prefer 8GB for schoolwork, frequent meetings, spreadsheets or switching between many tabs.
  • Read the model number, memory, storage, operating system and seller details in the specification section rather than relying on the product-family title.

How the main under-$300 alternatives compare

Model Best use Advantages Important caveat
ASUS Chromebook CX15 (2026) General browsing, documents, calls and streaming Current RTINGS best-under-$300 tested pick; 15.6-inch clamshell, number pad and useful display connectivity Washed-out screen, inconsistent touchpad and battery that may not cover a full workday; check 4GB versus 8GB
Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5 (2021) Movies, shows and tablet-style use Detachable keyboard and kickstand make it a flexible media tablet Older model; verify condition, remaining support horizon and price before buying
Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i Chromebook 14 (2023), Core i3/IPS Better performance and display than basic Chromebook options RTINGS says this exact Core i3 and IPS configuration improves on the CX15 Finding that configuration new at a reasonable price is the main obstacle
ASUS Chromebook CM14 Basic Chromebook use when discounted TechRadar listed it at $299 in its August 19, 2026 budget guide Its 4GB memory limits multitasking; the 9.5-hour TechRadar battery result applies to the CM14, not the CX15; display was described as lacking brightness and vibrancy
Windows laptop around $300 Required Windows desktop applications Provides the operating-system compatibility some programs demand No stable, exact current new Windows recommendation under this cap was established; verify each local listing and its condition

Chromebook or Windows: make this decision before comparing processors

Choose ChromeOS when your work is online

ChromeOS is the safer choice when your files live in cloud storage and your essential tools run in a browser. Google Docs, browser-based office suites, web email, streaming and online learning are natural fits. Android app support can fill some gaps, although an Android version is not always equivalent to a full desktop application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Windows when one required program demands it

List the applications you must use, not merely the tasks you want to perform. If one employer, school or client requires a Windows installer, confirm compatibility before ordering a Chromebook. ChromeOS does not run every Windows or macOS program, and remote-access workarounds can add setup, latency and security complications.

Check local-storage needs

Chromebooks encourage cloud storage, so buyers who keep large video collections, photo libraries or offline project folders should check the exact storage capacity and expansion options. A low price is less attractive if you immediately need additional storage for ordinary work.

Buying checklist: verify the listing, not just the headline

  1. Confirm the operating system. Make sure the listing says Chromebook or ChromeOS if that is your intention; do not assume a similarly named Windows model is interchangeable.
  2. Record the complete model number. CX15 is a family name. Capture the SKU or manufacturer model code shown in the technical specifications.
  3. Check memory. Prefer 8GB under the cap; accept 4GB only for light use and a clearly lower price.
  4. Check the display resolution and size. The commonly reviewed CX15 is 15.6-inch Full HD, but verify that the seller’s configuration matches.
  5. Inspect ports. If you plan to connect a monitor, confirm whether your model has HDMI, USB-C display output or another required connector.
  6. Check condition and seller. New, refurbished and open-box machines can have different warranties, batteries and return rights.
  7. Check ChromeOS support information. An older discounted Chromebook may have less remaining update support than a current model.
  8. Calculate the delivered cost. Include sales tax, shipping and any required protection plan before deciding whether it stays under $300.
  9. Read the return policy. A short test at home can reveal touchpad tracking, screen brightness and battery behavior that a specification sheet cannot.

What performance feels like in everyday tasks

Browsing and email

A CX15 with 4GB is suitable for a few ordinary tabs, email and light web forms. With 8GB, switching between more tabs is less disruptive. Pages with many advertisements, live dashboards or web editors can consume more memory than a simple article page, so tab discipline still matters.

Documents and spreadsheets

Cloud documents and moderate spreadsheets fit the platform well. The number pad helps with numerical entry. Very large workbooks, complex macros or desktop plug-ins are reasons to verify software support or move to Windows.

Video calls

Video meetings combine camera, microphone, browser and network activity. Close unused tabs, lower screen brightness when practical and avoid running several heavy web apps simultaneously on a 4GB model. Because the CX15’s battery result is a browsing test, do not assume it will deliver the same duration during continuous calls.

Streaming and media

The 15.6-inch form factor is comfortable for desk or couch viewing. The Duet 5 is the more natural alternative when a kickstand and detachable tablet design matter more than a conventional keyboard. For the CX15, keep expectations realistic about contrast, brightness and color vibrancy.

Battery, display and input trade-offs in practical terms

Tom’s Guide measured 7 hours 26 minutes for the CX15 by setting brightness to 150 nits and browsing over Wi‑Fi until shutdown. Your result can be lower with higher brightness, video playback, downloads, Android apps, external devices or an aging battery. Use the figure to compare test conditions, not to promise a workday away from an outlet.

The screen’s Full HD resolution gives text and video a useful 1920 × 1080 workspace, but resolution alone does not indicate brightness or color quality. RTINGS’ washed-out assessment is the more relevant warning for shoppers who care about image quality. The touchpad’s missed movements are another reason to test the machine promptly and use the return window if pointer control is unreliable.

Setup steps that prevent common frustrations

  1. Update ChromeOS first. Let the initial update and restart complete before judging speed or battery behavior.
  2. Sign in with the account you will actually use. Confirm that Drive files, bookmarks, passwords and calendar data synchronize correctly.
  3. Install only essential Android apps. Prefer browser versions when they provide the same function; unnecessary apps consume storage and memory.
  4. Set a practical brightness level. A lower comfortable setting reduces glare and generally extends runtime.
  5. Test every required workflow. Open your school or work portal, join a video call, edit a document, connect any monitor and play your usual media before the return period ends.
  6. Check offline access. Mark critical files for offline use only if you understand where they are stored and how they synchronize when you reconnect.

Troubleshooting the problems most likely to appear

Tabs keep reloading

On a 4GB model, close unused tabs and Android apps, remove extensions you do not need and use one heavy web application at a time. If the behavior continues during ordinary use, an 8GB configuration is the more durable choice.

The battery does not match the review number

Compare your conditions with the 150-nit Wi‑Fi browsing test. Raise brightness, stream video, use a camera or run a long call and runtime will change. Check for background updates, peripherals and poor Wi‑Fi before concluding that the battery is defective.

The display looks dull

Confirm that brightness is not reduced by an automatic setting and inspect the screen in the room where you will use it. If the panel still looks washed out, that is a known CX15 trade-off rather than a missing software setting.

The pointer misses movements

Clean and dry the touchpad, install pending updates and test with the device on a stable surface. If tracking remains inconsistent, use the seller’s return process rather than assuming every CX15 unit will behave identically.

A required app will not install

Check whether the developer offers a ChromeOS web or Android version. If the only supported edition is a Windows or macOS desktop program, return the Chromebook and verify a Windows machine’s exact specifications and condition instead.

When an older alternative makes sense

The Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5 (2021) is appealing when media consumption and tablet handling are the priority. Its kickstand and detachable keyboard create a different experience from the CX15’s fixed clamshell. Because it is an older design, inspect battery condition, included keyboard, charger, support horizon and seller return terms before treating a low price as a bargain.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i Chromebook 14 can be a better technical fit when you find the specific 2023 Core i3 model with an IPS display. RTINGS reports that this configuration improves on the CX15, but availability as a new, reasonably priced product is the challenge. Do not substitute another IdeaPad Slim 3i configuration and assume the same performance or panel.

Bottom-line buying decision

Buy the ASUS Chromebook CX15 (2026) if your $300 laptop will mainly browse, stream, handle documents and join calls, and you can confirm an 8GB listing at or below your ceiling. Accept the washed-out screen, imperfect touchpad and variable battery as part of the price. Select the 4GB version only for genuinely light use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Switch to the Duet 5 for a tablet-first media device, consider the Core i3/IPS IdeaPad Slim 3i only when that exact configuration is available new at a sensible price, and choose Windows only after confirming that a required desktop application makes ChromeOS unsuitable. In every case, the exact SKU, memory, condition, seller, support status and delivered price matter more than the family name in a headline.
