No single laptop backpack is the best carry-on bag for everyone. The right choice depends on three things you can check before you buy: the exact dimensions of your laptop, the exterior size your airline allows for a personal item or carry-on, and whether you need a bag that opens flat at the security checkpoint or mainly carries your gear through airports and into the office. The three models below show how those differences appear in published manufacturer specifications.
Start with your laptop’s exact dimensions
Screen size is the wrong starting point. A 15.6-inch screen can sit in a very different body from another 15.6-inch model, and the padded sleeve is measured against the full laptop, not the display.

- Measure your closed laptop’s width, depth, and thickness in inches. Include any protective case you will carry it in.
- Open the product page and find the laptop compartment’s interior dimensions, not just the maximum screen size. Targus recommends comparing your laptop’s exact dimensions with the bag’s compartment dimensions for this reason.
- Leave room for the sleeve’s padding and for a charger or cable in the same compartment. A bag rated for a 15.6-inch screen is not a guarantee that a 16-inch laptop will fit.
Travelpro lists a 15.6-inch screen-size limit for its Crew Executive Choice 3 Slim, so a 16-inch machine falls outside that stated limit even if the body looks similar.

Match the exterior size to your airline’s allowance
The exterior dimensions printed on a backpack page are the figures that matter at the gate, not the capacity in liters. Travelpro advises travelers to check the airline’s personal-item dimensions before buying, and that advice is the right one: no bag fits every carrier.

- Find your airline’s current personal-item and carry-on dimensions on its own website. Rules change, so do not rely on a guide’s older figure.
- Compare the bag’s full exterior dimensions, including depth, with those limits. Depth matters most because it is the dimension a packed bag tends to grow.
- If your airline also sets a weight limit, check it separately. The specifications discussed here do not establish how any airline weighs or measures bags.
Capacity and external size are separate decisions
A larger liter rating does not automatically mean a larger bag at the gate. The Osprey Transporter Travel Pack 26+6 is listed at 26 L and expands by 6 L to 32 L. Its published unexpanded dimensions are 16.9 × 13 × 7.9 inches. The specifications consulted do not give the expanded external dimensions, so if you plan to rely on the 32 L setting to meet a carry-on limit, check the expanded size against your airline’s rule before you travel.
Checkpoint access: what the feature does and does not promise
Several professional backpacks are built to open flat so the laptop can be lifted out and screened without unpacking the whole bag. Targus says its Corporate Traveler CUCT02B opens flat for X-ray screening and describes its design as “the patented checkpoint-friendly design of this TSA approved backpack is a traveler’s dream.” Both statements are manufacturer claims. They describe the bag’s construction, not a binding decision by a security authority, and screening procedures are set by the checkpoint you pass through. Before you fly, follow the instructions in force at your departure airport rather than assuming the bag’s design settles the question.

Trolley pass-through and shoulder comfort
If you walk long concourses with a rolling suitcase, the trolley pass-through often matters more than an extra pocket. Osprey and Targus both list a sleeve that slides over a luggage handle. Comfort differs by design: Osprey describes a padded harness and back panel, while Targus describes ergonomic shoulder straps and an air-mesh back panel. Try the harness fit in person where possible, because the published descriptions cannot show how a particular torso will feel after an hour of carrying.

Which bag fits your situation
- Your laptop is 15.6 inches or smaller and your allowance is tight: the Travelpro Crew Executive Choice 3 Slim, in the 20 L size, is the most compact option listed here. Confirm its 17.25-inch published dimension against your airline before buying.
- You mix short trips with longer ones: the Osprey Transporter 26+6 offers a smaller unexpanded size for a strict personal-item limit and extra room when the trip requires it. Verify the expanded size against your airline before relying on it.
- You pass through checkpoints often and want a business-organized bag: the Targus Corporate Traveler CUCT02B suits that routine, provided its 18.51-inch height fits the space under your seat on your route. If it does not, choose a shorter bag with a lay-flat laptop compartment.
