Short answer: Kryptonics’ published complete boards are mainly cruisers, not a single all-purpose line proven for every beginner or professional. The compact 22.5-inch polypropylene cruiser suits riders who value a small, light setup and who fit its 110 lb listed limit. The 27-inch maple cruiser offers a wider deck and a 220 lb listed limit. Neither model has independent testing in the available evidence, so choose by dimensions, construction, rider weight and intended use rather than by the brand name alone.
What Kryptonics skateboards are actually designed to do
Kryptonics’ lineup spans several categories: compact plastic “torpedo” boards, cruisers, longboards and standard 31-inch skatepark-style completes. The two documented examples in this guide are cruisers. A cruiser is normally selected for transportation, neighborhood riding and learning basic balance and turning, while a skatepark board is shaped and set up around tricks, ramps and repeated impacts. A specification published for one cruiser should not be treated as a specification for every Kryptonics model.

The manufacturer’s product pages describe the boards as complete setups that arrive assembled with deck, trucks, wheels, bearings, grip and hardware. That is convenient for a first purchase, but it does not remove the need to inspect axle tightness, wheel clearance and bearing seating before the first ride. Kryptonics also tells riders to tune the trucks to their preference and ability and to remove a protective wheel cover if one is installed. Follow the instructions for the exact model you buy, because hardware and dimensions can vary across generations.

There is no controlled, like-for-like test in the available material that ranks these boards for speed, stability, durability, trick performance or professional use. The manufacturer’s statement that the plastic deck is designed for high impact and flex is a product claim, not an independent durability result. Treat the capacities and component descriptions below as model-specific manufacturer specifications.

22.5-inch Original plastic cruiser: best when compact size matters
The 22.5-inch Original Complete Skateboard uses a custom-molded polypropylene deck measuring 22.5 by 6 inches. Its short wheelbase and narrow platform make it easy to carry and store. The page lists a recommended age of 8 and older and a maximum rider weight of 110 lb. That limit is materially lower than the 27-inch maple cruiser’s 220 lb listing, so a heavier rider should not assume that the smaller board is interchangeable.
| Component | Published specification | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Deck | 22.5 x 6 in, custom-molded polypropylene | Whether the narrow width gives you enough foot room and whether you fit the 110 lb limit |
| Trucks | 3.25-inch retro cruiser trucks with 90A bushings | Axle and hanger condition; truck tightness should match your control level |
| Wheels | 62 x 51 mm, 83A poured urethane | Cracks, flat spots and unobstructed rotation |
| Bearings | ABEC 5 | That ABEC grade is a manufacturing tolerance class, not a promise of a particular ride speed |
| Assembly | Complete board with grip tape and hardware | Confirm every fastener is present and snug, without binding the wheels |
| Listed rider guidance | Age 8+, 110 lb maximum | Use the current product page for the exact color and generation |
The wheel specification is 83A urethane, a hardness commonly associated with a balance of roll and grip, but the published page does not provide a measured comparison against another wheel. The 3.25-inch trucks and compact deck keep the package small; they also leave less standing area than the maple model. For a child or smaller adult learning to push on smooth paths, those dimensions may be attractive. For a rider who needs a broad platform, carries more than 110 lb or expects repeated skatepark impacts, this is the wrong model on the stated specifications alone.
27-inch maple cruiser: the wider, higher-capacity option
The 27-inch Cruiser has a 27 by 8.5-inch deck made from nine-ply maple. It has slight concave, a single kicktail and 80AB grip tape. The page lists a recommended age of 8 and older and a 220 lb rider limit. The extra width gives more room for stance changes than the 6-inch plastic deck, while the kicktail can help with small curb or nose-lift maneuvers. Those features do not make it a verified trick board; the product is presented as a cruiser.

| Component | Published specification | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Deck | 27 x 8.5 in, nine-ply maple, slight concave, single kicktail | More standing area and a traditional wood construction than the 22.5-inch plastic board |
| Grip | 80AB grip tape | Inspect adhesion at the edges and replace only with tape sized for this deck |
| Trucks | 5-inch heavy-duty aluminum | Wider truck/deck combination; verify kingpin and axle hardware are secure |
| Wheels | 61 x 37 mm PVC-injected | Check the exact wheel material and dimensions on the listing you receive |
| Bearings | Carbon-steel ABEC 1 | Lower listed ABEC grade than the compact model; cleanliness and lubrication still affect operation |
| Listed rider guidance | Age 8+, 220 lb maximum | Stay within the manufacturer’s stated limit |
The 27-inch board’s 5-inch aluminum trucks are paired with a wider deck than the 22.5-inch model. Its wheels are listed as PVC-injected rather than poured urethane, and its bearings as carbon-steel ABEC 1 rather than ABEC 5. Those labels describe components, not an independent ranking of comfort or speed. A rider choosing between the two should prioritize deck fit, capacity and terrain; a higher ABEC number alone is not a reason to select the smaller board.
Side-by-side decision table
| Decision factor | 22.5-inch Original plastic cruiser | 27-inch maple cruiser |
|---|---|---|
| Primary category | Compact cruiser | Larger cruiser |
| Deck size | 22.5 x 6 in | 27 x 8.5 in |
| Deck construction | Custom-molded polypropylene | Nine-ply maple with slight concave and single kicktail |
| Truck specification | 3.25-inch retro trucks, 90A bushings | 5-inch heavy-duty aluminum trucks |
| Wheel specification | 62 x 51 mm, 83A poured urethane | 61 x 37 mm, PVC-injected |
| Bearing specification | ABEC 5 | Carbon-steel ABEC 1 |
| Manufacturer-listed limit | 110 lb | 220 lb |
| Recommended age | 8+ | 8+ |
| Best fit on paper | Smaller riders, portability and short trips | Riders needing a wider platform or higher listed capacity |
| Evidence of professional performance | Not established | Not established |
“Best” therefore depends on constraints. Choose the 22.5-inch board only if your weight, foot placement and terrain fit its limits. Choose the 27-inch board if you need the wider 8.5-inch platform or its higher listed capacity. If your goal is ollies, grinds, ramps or structured skatepark progression, look at a model explicitly categorized for that use; the cruiser specifications above do not prove suitability for those tricks.
How to choose a Kryptonics complete step by step
- Define the terrain. Write down whether you will ride smooth sidewalks, rough pavement, bike paths or a skatepark. The documented boards are cruisers, so do not infer skatepark capability from their presence in the same product lineup.
- Measure the rider against the exact listing. Confirm age guidance and stay below the model’s published weight limit. The compact board is listed at 110 lb; the maple cruiser at 220 lb.
- Compare deck dimensions to your stance. A 6-inch width is much narrower than 8.5 inches. Stand on a similar board, if possible, and check that both feet can sit comfortably without hanging over the edges.
- Check the component description. Match truck width to the deck, verify wheel dimensions and material, and note the bearing grade. Do not substitute a specification from a different colorway or model number.
- Verify current availability and identity. Product pages, retailer stock and model generations change. Confirm that photos, deck dimensions and capacity match the board in the cart before paying. A marketplace listing such as the Kryptonics Original Torpedo Complete Skateboard is a listing snapshot, not proof that every current Torpedo board has identical parts.
- Budget for safety and maintenance. The board arrives assembled, but you may still need a skate helmet, knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards, plus a skate tool for routine adjustment.
First setup: inspection and truck adjustment
Inspect the complete board
- Turn each wheel by hand. It should rotate without scraping the deck or stopping immediately.
- Check that axle nuts are present and that wheels have a small amount of side-to-side clearance rather than being clamped tight.
- Look for cracks, delamination, sharp hardware edges or grip tape lifting from the deck.
- If a protective wheel cover is fitted for shipping, remove it before riding, as the manufacturer instructs.
- Check that the trucks are mounted evenly and that the kingpin nut is not visibly loose.
Set the trucks conservatively
Kryptonics advises adjusting trucks to your preference and ability. Beginners generally benefit from a stable setting rather than an extremely loose one. Make small, equal turns on both trucks, then stand on the stationary board and test whether you can lean without the deck unexpectedly contacting a wheel. After a short, slow ride, recheck the nuts. A truck that is too tight will resist turning; one that is too loose can feel unstable. There is no universal “correct” setting, and the 90A bushings listed on the compact model are not the same component specification as the maple model’s trucks.

Wear the right protective equipment
The Kryptonics product page says: “Always remember to wear skateboard protective gear (skate helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and/or wrist guards) that supports the rider’s skill level.” Start on a flat, traffic-free surface, practice stepping off safely, and avoid wet pavement. Children should ride with supervision appropriate to their age and local rules.

What the specifications do—and do not—tell you
Deck material
Polypropylene and nine-ply maple have different construction characteristics, but the cited pages do not provide laboratory flex measurements, impact cycles or lifespan estimates. The plastic page’s high-impact and flex language is marketing. Use the stated dimensions and capacity as selection data, not as a durability guarantee.
Wheel size, hardness and material
The compact board lists 62 x 51 mm, 83A poured urethane wheels; the maple board lists 61 x 37 mm PVC-injected wheels. Diameter, width, hardness and material can affect acceleration, grip and how readily a wheel rolls over surface texture, but no independent ride test compares these sets. Inspect wheels for flat spots and replace them only with parts that fit the truck axle and have adequate clearance.

ABEC ratings
ABEC is a tolerance classification for bearing manufacture, not a complete skateboard performance score. The 22.5-inch board’s ABEC 5 and the maple board’s carbon-steel ABEC 1 should not be read as a direct promise that one board is faster. Seal condition, contamination, lubrication, wheel alignment and rider weight also influence how bearings feel. Keep bearings dry, never force a seized bearing, and replace damaged units as a matched set when practical.

Assuming a cruiser is a skatepark board
A kicktail or molded plastic deck does not establish that a complete is designed for repeated ollies, grinds or ramps. Select a model whose current description specifically identifies skatepark use if that is your objective, and verify truck, wheel and deck dimensions for that model.
Over-tightening hardware
Cranking axle nuts against the bearings can stop wheels from spinning; overtightening the kingpin can make steering unresponsive. Adjust in small increments and test after each change.
Trusting a stale listing
Official pages and retailer inventory can change, and the cited pages were crawled about 1.3 years before the current information date. Recheck stock, photos, dimensions, capacity and model identity at purchase. Prices and availability are not stable specifications.
Maintenance schedule for either cruiser
- Before every ride: glance over deck cracks, truck bolts, wheel nuts and grip adhesion; spin each wheel.
- After wet or dirty exposure: dry the board immediately and inspect bearings for rust or gritty rotation.
- Every few rides: verify that truck mounting bolts remain even and that wheels have not developed flat spots.
- When steering changes: inspect bushings and kingpin hardware before loosening the trucks further.
- When a component is replaced: match axle diameter, wheel clearance, bearing seat and hardware length to the exact deck and truck combination.
Store the board indoors, away from standing moisture and prolonged heat. Do not exceed the manufacturer’s rider limit or use visible-damage components.
Are Kryptonics skateboards good for beginners or professionals?
For beginners, either documented cruiser can be reasonable when its size, capacity and intended terrain fit the rider. The 22.5-inch model emphasizes portability but has a narrow deck and 110 lb limit. The 27-inch model provides a wider 8.5-inch platform and 220 lb limit. Beginners still need protective gear, a safe practice area and correctly adjusted trucks.
The available product information does not substantiate professional-level performance, sponsored use or advanced trick capability. Experienced riders may enjoy a cruiser for transportation or casual carving, but a professional claim would require independent testing or specific evidence that is not provided here. A public beginner discussion uses the question “is Kryptonics a good brand?” as anecdotal reader language, not as survey evidence; the useful answer is to judge the exact board against your requirements rather than assign one verdict to the entire lineup. See the discussion at r/NewSkaters for that context.
Buying checklist
- Exact model name, color and generation match the product page.
- Deck length and width suit the rider’s stance.
- Rider weight is below the model-specific limit: 110 lb for the cited 22.5-inch board or 220 lb for the cited 27-inch board.
- Use is cruising or transportation unless the listing explicitly identifies skatepark/trick intent.
- Truck, wheel and bearing specifications are confirmed, not inferred from another model.
- Board arrives without cracks, loose hardware, wheel covers or damaged bearings.
- Helmet and appropriate pads are included in the riding plan.
- Current stock, return terms and listing identity are checked immediately before purchase.
Bottom line
The 22.5-inch Original is the compact choice for a lighter rider who wants a small polypropylene cruiser and accepts the 110 lb limit. The 27-inch maple cruiser is the more accommodating option for riders who need an 8.5-inch deck and the manufacturer’s 220 lb listed capacity. Both are documented as cruisers, not proven professional or universal beginner boards. Select by fit, terrain and exact model specifications, then inspect and adjust the complete before riding.
