Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe best starting point for smooth Kodi streaming on a smart TV is conservative: use Kodi 21, set Adjust display refresh rate to On start/stop, leave Sync playback to display off unless you specifically need timing correction, and configure caching for the type of source you actually use. Then identify whether the symptom is judder, buffering, or failed decoding. Each has a different cause, and no cache or display setting can overcome an underpowered device, unsupported codec, or inadequate connection.
The menu names below follow Kodi’s official v21 (Omega) documentation. Options can be hidden at lower settings levels and can vary by TV operating system, Kodi build, and connected display.

Which Kodi settings should you change first?
Apply these changes in order, testing the same stream or file after each one. Changing one variable at a time makes it possible to identify the real cause instead of masking it with a large collection of tweaks.

First, identify the symptom
Judder: motion looks uneven but the stream does not pause
Judder usually appears as repeated small jumps during camera pans or scrolling text. Audio may remain continuous and the progress indicator may show that data is arriving normally. This pattern points first to a mismatch between the video’s frame rate and the refresh rate being used by the TV.
Buffering: playback stops and a spinner or pause appears
Buffering means Kodi is temporarily short of playable data. The source may be delivering data slowly, the network may be losing throughput, or the file’s bitrate may exceed what the connection can sustain. A refresh-rate toggle cannot repair this condition; use the Caching page and investigate the source and connection.
Decode or rendering failure: dropped frames, artifacts, crashes, or a black screen
If the stream keeps receiving data but video is jerky, shows blocks or green frames, crashes Kodi, or never displays, the TV or box may not support the codec, resolution, HDR mode, or bitrate. Hardware acceleration settings can affect this, but a setting cannot create decoding capability that the device does not have.

Set refresh-rate matching for smoother motion
Kodi documents Adjust display refresh rate under Settings > Player > Videos. Set it to On start/stop when both the Kodi device and the connected TV support display-mode switching.
- From Kodi’s home screen, open Settings.
- Choose Player, then Videos.
- Locate Adjust display refresh rate.
- Select On start/stop.
- Play a file or stream whose motion previously looked uneven.
With this option enabled, Kodi asks the TV to use a refresh rate that matches the video’s frame rate when playback begins, then returns to the previous mode when playback ends. The screen can go blank for a few seconds while the display changes modes; that brief blackout is expected. It is not evidence that the stream has failed.
Kodi lists Always as another choice, but its documentation does not recommend it as the general starting point. Use it only when you have a specific reason and have verified that your TV and the entire HDMI or display chain handle every mode involved.

Refresh matching only helps when the display and platform expose compatible modes. If a TV does not offer the required refresh rate, Kodi must use an available mode and motion may remain uneven. Check the TV’s own picture information panel to see which resolution and refresh rate it actually receives.
Keep display synchronization separate from refresh switching
Sync playback to display is a different control in the same video settings area. It changes playback speed slightly to keep video timing aligned with the display. That can be useful for fine timing corrections, but it is not a universal smooth-streaming switch.
Kodi warns that enabling this option disables audio passthrough because Kodi may need to alter audio timing along with the video. If your receiver or soundbar relies on Dolby or DTS passthrough, leave the setting off unless you accept that trade-off and have tested the result. Start with refresh-rate matching alone; only investigate display synchronization when the remaining problem is a small, persistent timing drift rather than network pauses.
Configure Kodi 21 caching for the actual source
Kodi 21 moved cache controls into the graphical interface. Open Settings > Services > Caching. The official page is marked as updated for v21 at Kodi’s Caching settings documentation.
Choose the correct buffer mode
The Caching page lets you choose which sources Kodi buffers. Select the mode that corresponds to what you are playing:
- Internet streams: use this when the media arrives from an online source.
- Network filesystems: use this for files on a NAS, shared computer, or other network-mounted storage.
- All filesystems: use this when you need the policy to cover both network and other filesystem sources.
The exact labels and choices can depend on the Kodi build. Do not select a broader mode merely because it sounds faster; broad buffering can consume memory for local playback that did not need it.

Understand the other cache controls
Kodi exposes memory size, read factor, and chunk size alongside the source mode. The documentation gives a default read factor of 4x. That is a setting documented by Kodi, not a measured speed improvement or a recommendation that every device should exceed.
The read factor controls how aggressively Kodi reads ahead. Kodi describes adaptive behavior and notes that a low factor may work better on less powerful Android hardware, while high-bitrate Blu-ray or UHD material and a slow network create different demands. Increasing it can allow a larger data lead when bandwidth is available, but can also increase memory use and make a weak device less responsive.
Change one cache value, replay the same section of the same source, and observe whether the result changes. If the connection cannot deliver data at the required sustained rate, a larger cache only delays the next pause. It cannot make an unsupported codec playable or turn an incapable TV into a 4K decoder.

Do not use old XML recipes for v21 cache settings
For Kodi 21, the cache settings are handled in the GUI. The former XML method is deprecated and ignored for these settings, according to the v21 documentation. If you copied an older advancedsettings.xml recipe, remove the assumption that it is controlling the values shown on the Caching page and configure the current interface instead.
Use hardware decoding only when the platform supports it
Kodi’s hardware-acceleration controls are platform-specific. Android devices can expose different decoders, drivers, and codec support, so there is no single hardware-acceleration switch that is correct for every smart TV.
- Confirm which operating system your TV or attached Kodi device uses.
- Install a stable Kodi release intended for that platform. Kodi provides platform downloads at its official download page; Android builds are listed separately at Kodi’s Android downloads page.
- Start with the platform’s supported hardware-decoding defaults.
- Test a representative file, including the resolution, codec, frame rate, and HDR format that normally causes trouble.
- If a hardware option causes artifacts, a crash, incorrect colors, or a black screen, revert it and test again.
Hardware decoding can reduce CPU load when the chip and driver support the exact format. It cannot compensate for a TV whose chipset lacks the required decoder. A 4K or high-bitrate file may exceed the device’s decode capability even when lower-resolution files play perfectly.

Use Kodi’s playback information to locate the bottleneck
During playback, open Kodi’s player-process information to inspect dynamic playback diagnostics. Kodi describes this feature at Player process info. The information shown depends partly on the refresh-rate and display-synchronization settings, so note which options are enabled when you read it.

Use the overlay as a decision aid:
- If video timing or dropped frames increase while motion looks uneven, investigate refresh-rate support and display synchronization.
- If the buffer level repeatedly falls to zero before a pause, investigate source bitrate, network throughput, and cache mode.
- If frames are dropped while the buffer remains healthy, investigate decoding, resolution, codec support, and hardware acceleration.
- If playback fails immediately with artifacts or a crash after changing acceleration, return to the previous setting and treat the issue as a platform or driver limitation.
Record the file’s resolution, frame rate, codec, audio format, and whether the source is internet-based or on a network share. Those details make comparisons between devices meaningful.
Why is Kodi buffering?
Check the source before changing memory values
Online streams can vary in bitrate and server performance. A stream that works at one time can buffer later without any Kodi setting changing. Test another authorized source and a lower-bitrate version if available. If only one source pauses, the source path is more likely than the TV’s display settings.
Check sustained throughput, not just a speed-test peak
High-bitrate video needs a sustained transfer rate with enough margin for network variation. Wi-Fi interference, distance from the access point, congestion, and a busy network share can reduce the rate during playback. If the TV or Kodi box has an Ethernet port, a properly installed Ethernet cable can provide a useful diagnostic comparison with Wi-Fi; Kodi does not test or guarantee that a cable will solve internet-stream buffering.
Match cache mode to network playback
After confirming the source type, select the corresponding mode on Settings > Services > Caching. Start with Kodi’s documented defaults, then alter one setting only if the same source consistently exhausts its buffer. A cache adjustment is appropriate for smoothing short network variations, not for fixing a connection that is continuously slower than the stream’s bitrate.

Stutter with a full buffer
If the buffer remains healthy but frames are dropped, buffering is not the primary problem. Check whether the file uses a codec, resolution, HDR mode, or bitrate beyond the device’s decoder. Test a known lower-complexity file to establish whether the limitation is format-specific.
Stutter after enabling synchronization
Turn Sync playback to display back off and retest, especially if you use audio passthrough. The option can alter playback timing and disables passthrough by design.
Compare a smart TV app with an external Kodi device
Do not choose a device by brand endorsement. Kodi states that it does not promote one hardware product over another at its software information page. Compare the capabilities that affect your own files and streams.

Install Kodi from the right source and use lawful media
Kodi’s official download page recommends stable releases for normal users. The application itself includes no media. You must supply your own files or use media sources you are authorized to access. Installation availability, permissions, and update behavior vary between Android TV, webOS, and other platforms.
Before troubleshooting playback, confirm that:
- You installed a stable build intended for your platform rather than an unofficial modified package.
- The TV or attached device meets the file’s resolution, codec, HDR, and audio requirements.
- Your media source is lawful and authorized for your use.
- The TV’s display mode and any receiver or soundbar are configured for the formats you intend to pass through.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
Follow this sequence when the first settings do not solve the problem.
- Classify the symptom. Decide whether motion is uneven, playback pauses, or frames are dropped despite a full buffer.
- Test a second source. Use another authorized stream or a local file with known properties. A single failing source points toward the source or network path.
- Apply refresh matching. Set Adjust display refresh rate to On start/stop and allow the mode switch to complete.
- Protect passthrough. Keep Sync playback to display off unless you have confirmed that losing audio passthrough is acceptable.
- Check playback information. Look for buffer exhaustion versus dropped frames while the buffer is healthy.
- Configure caching by source. On the v21 Caching page, select internet streams, network filesystems, or all filesystems as appropriate.
- Change one cache value. Test the same section again; return to the previous value if responsiveness or playback worsens.
- Test the network path. Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection where available, and check the network share or streaming service for sustained throughput.
- Test decoding. Try a lower-resolution or lower-bitrate file. If that succeeds while the original fails, investigate codec and hardware support rather than increasing the cache indefinitely.
- Revert harmful acceleration changes. Restore the platform default if artifacts, crashes, or incorrect colors began after changing a hardware-decoding option.
If the same high-bitrate file fails on every source while simpler files work, the device has likely reached a capability limit. The reliable remedy is a source format or playback device that the TV’s hardware and display chain support, not an extreme Kodi preset.
Version and menu-label caveats
This guide follows Kodi 21 (Omega) documentation, including the caching page updated for v21. Kodi can change labels, defaults, and platform availability in later releases. Some controls appear only after increasing Kodi’s settings level, and hardware options differ by operating system. Recheck the relevant official pages after a major Kodi update, particularly if a menu is missing or an old XML guide conflicts with the current interface.
