Best Kodi Alternatives for Streaming and Organizing Your TV Library

Choose Jellyfin if you want a free-software server for a personal collection, Plex if you want a mature server-and-app model across many device types, or Stremio if your priority is simple entertainment-video discovery rather than a deeply customizable media center. Keep Kodi when direct playback from local or network storage and extensive customization matter more than a centralized server. The right choice depends on where your files live, whether you can keep a host computer running, which television or streaming devices you own, and how much control you want over the interface.

Quick answer: which Kodi alternative fits your setup?

These products solve related but different problems. Kodi is primarily a media-player application: it plays video, music, podcasts and other digital media from local storage, network storage and the internet. Jellyfin and Plex place a server between your library and your playback devices. Stremio is positioned by its own help center as an entertainment-video application that emphasizes ease of use.

  • Pick Jellyfin for a self-hosted personal library, open-source software and no premium feature tier according to Jellyfin’s project documentation.
  • Pick Plex when you want a server-and-client library with apps spanning computers, browsers, phones, smart TVs, streaming devices and game consoles. Confirm current paid feature boundaries directly before subscribing.
  • Pick Stremio when a straightforward entertainment-video experience is more important than Kodi- or Plex-level customization. Its comparison article, published August 31, 2023, is a first-party description rather than an independent current feature test.
  • Stay with Kodi when you prefer a television-oriented interface that reads local and network media directly, or when deep customization is central to your setup.

There is no universal ranking. A household with a large collection and an always-on computer has a different best choice from someone who wants to install one app and start watching entertainment video.

How the alternatives are built

Kodi: a direct media-center application

The Kodi Foundation describes Kodi as free, open-source software for playing and viewing most videos, music, podcasts and other digital media from local and network storage and the internet. Its interface is designed for televisions and runs across multiple operating systems and hardware platforms. In this model, the application is the media center. Files can remain on the device, on a network share or elsewhere that Kodi can access.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That direct model avoids the requirement for a separate library server, but it also means that each playback device is part of the setup. If you install Kodi on two televisions, each installation may need its own configuration and access to the same storage. Kodi’s project does not endorse one hardware product over another; hardware choice should follow your operating system, storage and playback requirements.

Jellyfin and Plex: server plus client applications

Jellyfin and Plex organize a personal collection on server software and deliver it to end-user devices through playback apps. The server is the central point for the library, while phones, browsers, televisions, consoles or other clients connect to it. This architecture is useful when several people or rooms need the same collection and a single library database is preferable to configuring every screen independently.

A dedicated server does not necessarily mean buying a NAS. Jellyfin documents installation on ordinary desktop operating systems, Linux distributions, containers and NAS platforms such as Synology and TrueNAS SCALE. Plex likewise describes Plex Media Server support for major computer operating systems and NAS devices. A computer that can remain available can serve as the host; a NAS is an optional form factor, not a prerequisite established by these projects.

Stremio: an entertainment-video application

Stremio’s help-center comparison says the application is specifically targeted at entertainment video and aims to be easy to use. The same article says Stremio will not be as customizable and feature-rich as Kodi and Plex, while being significantly easier to use. That statement was published August 31, 2023, so treat it as Stremio’s positioning, not a complete audit of every current release or device.

Stremio’s model is therefore a better conceptual match for a viewer choosing an entertainment-video app than for someone designing a highly controlled home-media server. The source and rights for any content accessed through an add-on or service remain the viewer’s responsibility; the application itself does not automatically establish that a particular stream is lawful.

Jellyfin: the strongest fit for a self-hosted library

What it offers

Jellyfin calls itself a Free Software Media System for managing and streaming media from a dedicated server to end-user devices through apps. Its introduction states: “There are no strings attached, no premium licenses or features, and no hidden agendas: just a team who want to build something better and work together to achieve it.” That is Jellyfin’s own project statement, not an independent certification, but it clearly explains the project’s licensing and feature philosophy.

The server-centered design puts your collection in one place. You can then use compatible clients rather than maintaining a separate library database on every screen. Jellyfin’s documentation lists installation routes for Windows, macOS, Linux distributions, containers, Synology and TrueNAS SCALE. This range allows a reader to start with an existing computer and move to a NAS later if an always-on appliance is more convenient.

Client coverage and the compatibility check

Jellyfin’s official client listing includes desktop, mobile, television, console and Roku categories, along with Kodi integration options. Read that list as a starting point, not a guarantee that every client supports every server feature. Before committing, identify the exact television model, streaming device, phone, computer or console you will use and confirm that a current client exists for it.

Project documentation and code can change frequently. Check the current client page and the installation documentation immediately before deployment, especially when your setup depends on a particular television operating system, console generation or Kodi add-on.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

When Jellyfin is the better choice

  • You already own media files and want one central library for multiple playback devices.
  • You are comfortable selecting and maintaining a host computer, Linux system, container or NAS.
  • You want the project’s stated no-premium-license approach rather than a product whose paid feature boundaries you must evaluate.
  • You value control over where the server runs and how clients connect.

Jellyfin is less suitable when you do not want to operate a server at all, or when your exact playback device lacks a client that meets your needs. The server architecture adds an installation and maintenance task that Kodi’s direct-playback model can avoid.

A practical Jellyfin setup path

  1. Inventory the playback devices. Write down each television, streaming device, phone, computer and console that must access the library. Use Jellyfin’s official client list to check each one: https://jellyfin.org/clients/.
  2. Choose a host. Start with a supported Windows, macOS or Linux computer if one can stay available, or evaluate a container, Synology installation or TrueNAS SCALE installation using the project documentation. A NAS is optional.
  3. Install the server using the current instructions. Jellyfin’s documentation covers the supported installation routes and is the authority for version-specific steps: https://jellyfin.org/docs/index.html.
  4. Organize the collection on the host. Decide which folders contain the media and keep the arrangement understandable before adding libraries. Clear organization makes later troubleshooting easier.
  5. Install clients only after the server is reachable. Add the appropriate application to each device, then verify that it can see the server and play representative files.
  6. Test the actual devices you care about. A project-wide client list demonstrates availability, not equal performance or feature support. Test the television or streaming box that will be used most often, not just a desktop browser.

Plex: a broad server-and-app ecosystem

Architecture and reach

Plex’s official support description presents Plex Media Server as the library host and lists server support for major computer operating systems and NAS devices. It also describes playback apps for smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, streaming devices, game consoles, computers and browsers. That combination makes Plex a practical candidate when your household uses several kinds of screens and you want a common server-based library.

The important trade-off is that device breadth is not the same as identical behavior. App availability, supported playback functions and account or feature requirements can vary by platform. Verify the specific app for your hardware and the current feature documentation before you design around a capability.

What is and is not established about cost

Plex’s support material discusses premium features, but the available evidence does not establish a complete, current plan comparison. Do not assume that a feature is included, excluded or permanently free based on an old article or a device’s app listing. Check Plex’s current official feature and pricing information at the time you set up the server, particularly if remote access or a particular playback function is important to you.

When Plex is the better choice

  • You want a documented server model with apps spanning computers, browsers, mobile devices, smart TVs, streaming devices and consoles.
  • Your household includes several client types and convenience matters more than selecting every component of the stack.
  • You are willing to verify current feature and pricing boundaries instead of treating the server as an all-inclusive purchase.

Plex is a weaker fit if your primary requirement is a completely direct, no-server media center or if you want to avoid evaluating paid feature boundaries. Its server model still requires a suitable host and client compatibility checks.

Stremio: prioritize simplicity for entertainment video

How its positioning differs

Stremio’s comparison article says it is specifically targeted toward entertainment video and designed to be easy to use. It also says, “Stremio will never be as customizable and feature-rich as Kodi and Plex, but it is significantly easier to use.” The statement is attributed to Dimo Stoyanov in a Stremio Help Center article dated August 31, 2023. Because it is a first-party comparison, use it to understand Stremio’s intended trade-off rather than as an independent usability score.

That trade-off matters for a TV-library question. If your goal is to catalogue and serve a personal collection from a server you control, Jellyfin or Plex aligns more directly with that architecture. If your goal is to reach entertainment video with fewer configuration decisions and you can accept less customization, Stremio may be the more natural starting point.

Content-source responsibility

An application’s ability to display or organize a source does not grant rights to that source. Check the provider, licensing terms and copyright status for every stream or add-on you use. Avoid treating a catalog or integration as proof that a particular title is authorized in your country.

Kodi remains the right answer for some homes

Why not switch?

Kodi’s official software page describes a free, open-source application that handles most videos, music, podcasts and other digital media from local storage, network storage and the internet. Its television-oriented interface and broad hardware and operating-system support make it a strong choice when you want the media center itself on each playback device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keeping Kodi avoids introducing a server host, a central service and a separate client ecosystem. It is especially sensible when one television or one small group of devices can access the same network storage and you prefer to tune the interface yourself. The cost is more per-device configuration and less of the centralized management that Jellyfin and Plex provide.

Choose by library, host and device—not by brand popularity

Decision checklist

  • Where are the files? If they already sit on local or network storage and direct playback is enough, Kodi may be all you need. If you want one managed library delivered to many clients, evaluate Jellyfin or Plex.
  • Can a host stay available? Jellyfin and Plex require server software for their personal-library architecture. An ordinary computer can be the host; a NAS is optional.
  • Which clients are mandatory? Confirm the exact app for every television, streaming box, phone, computer and console. A project’s broad category list does not promise equal feature support.
  • How much customization is non-negotiable? Kodi is the baseline for a customizable media-center experience. Stremio’s own comparison explicitly places ease of use ahead of Kodi- and Plex-level customization.
  • What cost boundary matters? Jellyfin documents no premium licenses or features. Plex’s current paid boundaries require direct verification; do not make a purchase decision from an old plan description.
  • Who will maintain it? A server solution adds host updates, storage organization and client administration. Kodi reduces central-server work but can require repeating configuration on each device.

Hosting a personal library: computer or NAS?

A NAS can be useful when you want an always-on device dedicated to storage and server duties, but the official Jellyfin documentation also lists desktop, Linux and container installations. That means you can begin with hardware you already own rather than buying a NAS solely to try the software.

Choose the host only after checking the actual client list and your media requirements. Storage capacity, operating-system support, codec handling and any need for conversion during playback affect the decision, and the cited material does not provide a universal hardware specification or performance guarantee. Do not assume that a particular NAS model will suit every collection or client combination.

Compatibility and troubleshooting checks

The app is unavailable on a required screen

Return to the project’s official client listing and search for the exact device category and model family. If no suitable client exists, consider a different playback device, a Kodi integration where documented, or an alternative platform whose client supports that screen. Do not infer compatibility from the existence of a desktop or mobile app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The server is installed but the television cannot connect

First confirm that the server is running on the intended host and that the television or streaming device is using the expected client. Then check the project’s current installation and client documentation for the operating-system-specific connection procedure. Testing from a second client can distinguish a server availability problem from a single-device app problem.

A feature works on one client but not another

Client listings establish availability, not parity. Record the exact device and app involved, then consult the current documentation or support material for that client. If a feature is central to your setup, make it a requirement during selection rather than assuming that every client inherits the server’s full capability.

You are considering a paid Plex feature

Verify the current official Plex feature and pricing pages immediately before purchase. The available source describes premium features but does not establish a complete, current entitlement table, so an older comparison can produce the wrong answer.

Copyright and lawful use

Media software can play or organize files without determining whether you have the right to access them. The Kodi Foundation states: “The Kodi project does not provide any support for bootleg content or other illegally sourced material, nor do we allow community support within our official web sites and services for such content.” That policy concerns Kodi’s project support, while the broader principle applies to every option here: use files and streams you are authorized to access, and check territorial licensing when a service or add-on is involved.

Sources and version-sensitive details

The practical verdict

For most people replacing Kodi around an existing personal collection, start by deciding whether you want a server. If yes, Jellyfin is the clearest fit when free software and no premium feature tier are priorities; Plex is the alternative to investigate when broad client coverage and a conventional server-and-app ecosystem are more important, subject to current feature and pricing checks. If you do not want to run a personal-library server, Kodi remains the direct media-center option, while Stremio is the candidate to consider when simple entertainment-video use outweighs deep customization.
