For most readers, start with the Kobo Clara BW. It is the clearest fit for a compact, black-and-white reader centered on EPUB books rather than Amazon’s store and services. Choose the BOOX Go Color 7 instead if Android apps, color, and broad file support matter more than a distraction-free appliance. Consider the PocketBook Verse Pro if your library can use its documented Libby workflow and the required firmware is available on your unit.
“Fewer Amazon features” is a preference about where you buy, borrow, and transfer books—not a verified privacy rating. The right choice depends on whether your collection comes from a competing bookstore, DRM-free EPUB files, a public library, or Android reading apps.

What “fewer Amazon features” should mean before you buy
Kindle alternatives are not one interchangeable category. A reader may be trying to avoid Amazon’s bookstore, an Amazon account, Amazon-specific syncing, or simply the friction of moving EPUB files. Those are different requirements, and each device handles them differently.
- Store independence: You want to buy from another ebook store or keep purchases outside Amazon’s ecosystem.
- Open-file flexibility: You already own EPUB files, especially DRM-free books, and want a straightforward way to read them.
- Library access: You want to borrow titles through your local public library instead of purchasing every book.
- App access: You want Android reading, comics, news, or specialist apps on the same device.
- Less service dependence: You prefer a reader that can remain useful without relying on Amazon’s cloud features.
No evidence here establishes that Kobo, PocketBook, or BOOX collects less personal data than Kindle. Privacy requires a current, like-for-like review of each company’s policy, account model, software, and network behavior; do not infer it from the absence of Amazon branding.

Choose by where your books come from
You buy from a non-Amazon ebook store
Start by checking the store’s file format and DRM before choosing hardware. “EPUB” describes the container, not whether a file is freely transferable: a DRM-protected purchase may work only with devices or apps authorized for that retailer. Ask three questions before paying: Is the title a standard EPUB or a retailer-specific file? What DRM system, if any, is used? Can the store send the book to the device or app you intend to use?
Kobo’s model-specific EPUB documentation makes the Clara BW and Libra Colour natural candidates for readers building an EPUB-centered library. That does not make every third-party purchase automatically compatible; verify the seller’s requirements for each catalogue.
Recommended Free Tools
You already own DRM-free EPUB files
These files give you the most freedom, but the transfer experience still matters. A focused reader such as the Clara BW keeps the task simple in principle: download the file, use the transfer method described in the model’s support guide, and confirm that the book opens with its cover, chapter navigation, and fonts intact. Keep an original copy on your computer or backup drive.
Do not assume that a device’s ability to display EPUB means it accepts every protected EPUB. Treat DRM status and transfer method as separate checks. The BOOX Go Color 7 explicitly lists EPUB support, while its Android software also lets you install a compatible reading app when a particular publisher or library requires one.

You borrow from a public library
Library lending is the most geography-sensitive part of this decision. Kobo says its built-in OverDrive/Libby compatibility is limited to named devices and countries, and that local library availability and title selection vary. Check your country, the exact model, and your library catalogue before purchase using Kobo’s country-availability guidance.
The PocketBook Verse Pro has a newer documented path: release notes for firmware 6.10.3425, dated March 24, 2026, say that a PocketBook-Libby app was added with library search and borrowing, offline reading of borrowed ebooks in the built-in reader, and online audiobook listening. That is a firmware feature, not a guarantee that every library or unit can use it. Confirm that the update is offered for your device and that your library’s service is supported.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →With a BOOX reader, library borrowing is app-dependent. Android gives you more possible routes, but it also makes you responsible for installing, signing in to, updating, and troubleshooting the relevant app. A Kobo or PocketBook workflow may be preferable if your library is directly supported and you want fewer moving parts.
You want several Android reading apps
The BOOX Go Color 7 is the outlier in this group because it runs Android 12 and supports third-party apps. That makes it suitable for readers who switch among library apps, subscription services, cloud-storage readers, comics software, and ordinary EPUB/AZW3 files. The trade-off is conceptual as much as technical: an Android reader behaves more like a small, specialized tablet, while the Clara BW is designed around reading rather than app choice.
Kobo Clara BW: the default compact monochrome choice
Choose the Clara BW when your priority is a small, focused reader for black-and-white books and an EPUB-friendly library. Kobo’s support site has a dedicated Clara BW section and EPUB-format documentation, giving you a model-specific reference instead of a generic manual. Use that documentation for the current transfer and setup instructions: Kobo support documents.

Why it fits this reader
- It keeps the recommendation centered on a compact reading device rather than a general app platform.
- Its EPUB documentation aligns with readers who source books outside Amazon.
- It is a sensible starting point when color, Android apps, and page-turn hardware are not requirements.
What to verify
- List the stores and libraries you actually use, then check their DRM and device requirements.
- Check whether your country and library catalogue are eligible for Kobo’s built-in OverDrive/Libby service.
- Open the current Clara BW support guide and confirm the transfer method you plan to use before buying.
- Compare the current local price and return policy; no stable worldwide price is established here.
The Clara BW is not automatically the best choice for color textbooks, app-only services, or a library outside Kobo’s supported combinations. It is the best default only for the compact, monochrome, EPUB-oriented use case.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Kobo Libra Colour: when color matters more than compactness
The Libra Colour belongs on your shortlist if color is useful for comics, diagrams, highlighted notes, covers, or illustrated nonfiction and you want to stay within Kobo’s focused-reader approach. Kobo lists model-specific support material, and current comparative coverage includes the model in the non-Kindle category.
Color alone does not solve content access. Apply the same checks as with the Clara BW: confirm the seller’s DRM, verify library eligibility in your country, and check current availability and pricing. If most of your books are plain novels, color may add little; if your reading depends on charts or illustrations, it can justify choosing this larger color-oriented option.
PocketBook Verse Pro: a library-led alternative
The Verse Pro is most compelling when your purchase decision starts with a particular library workflow. PocketBook’s release notes for version 6.10.3425, released March 24, 2026, document a PocketBook-Libby app, library search and borrowing, offline reading of borrowed ebooks in the built-in reader, and online audiobook listening. Read the complete notes at PocketBook’s firmware release document.
A safe way to evaluate the Libby feature
- Record your library system, country, and the service it uses for ebooks and audiobooks.
- Ask the retailer or manufacturer whether firmware 6.10.3425, or a later compatible release, is available for the exact Verse Pro unit.
- Confirm that your library appears in the app and that your membership can borrow titles.
- Check whether the titles you care about can be opened offline in the built-in reader, rather than assuming every loan behaves identically.
- Only then compare the device’s price, warranty, and local support with the Kobo and BOOX options.
The release notes establish what the firmware adds; they do not establish universal library coverage, permanent availability, or identical behavior in every region.

BOOX Go Color 7: the flexible Android option
Choose the BOOX Go Color 7 when “alternative to Kindle” really means “a reading device that can run my other apps.” BOOX lists Android 12, third-party app support, EPUB and AZW3 compatibility, a 7-inch Kaleido 3 display, and page-turn buttons on its official product page: BOOX Go Color 7 specifications.
What its specifications change
- Android 12: You can use compatible third-party reading and library applications instead of relying on one vendor’s built-in catalogue.
- EPUB and AZW3: The listed formats cover common open and Kindle-associated file types, although DRM authorization still belongs to the store or app that supplied the file.
- 7-inch Kaleido 3: The color display suits readers who need more than plain monochrome text.
- Page-turn buttons: Physical controls are useful when you read one-handed or do not want to tap the screen for every page.
The trade-off
App freedom adds setup and maintenance. You may need to install several apps, create separate accounts, manage notifications, and troubleshoot a service that changes independently of the device maker. If your goal is simply to open EPUB novels with minimal distraction, the Clara BW is the more focused choice. If your reading life spans multiple apps and formats, the extra complexity may be worthwhile.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to handle the “send an EPUB to an email” question
A reader discussion phrases the problem as: “Is there a kindle alternative that still allows you to send an epub to an email to get onto it?” That wording is useful because it separates convenience from store choice.
Email delivery is an Amazon-specific workflow, not a universal e-reader standard. Do not assume that replacing the device preserves the same email address, conversion service, annotations, or cloud sync. For a non-Kindle reader, evaluate the actual transfer route you are willing to use:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Vendor-documented transfer: Follow the model’s current support guide for loading an EPUB.
- Computer-to-device transfer: Useful for a library of DRM-free files when the reader supports the documented connection method.
- Cloud or app access: Relevant to Android readers when a reading app can open files from your preferred storage service.
- Library app borrowing: The cleanest route when your library and device support an integrated service such as Kobo’s eligible OverDrive/Libby setup, PocketBook’s documented Libby firmware, or an Android library app.
If one-tap email delivery is non-negotiable, test that workflow with the exact model before returning your current reader. If the real goal is “I want to move EPUB files without buying them again,” prioritize DRM compatibility and a transfer method documented for the device rather than searching for an identical email feature.

Library borrowing: verify three things, not just the device name
Library support can fail even when a product page mentions Libby or OverDrive. Confirm all three conditions:
- Country: The service may be available only in certain countries.
- Device: Built-in support may apply to selected models, not every reader from the same company.
- Catalogue: Your local library may offer fewer titles, different loan rules, or no compatible ebook service.
Kobo documents these restrictions in its OverDrive availability article. For PocketBook, add a fourth practical check: firmware. A documented feature is useful only if your unit can receive the required release and your local library can authenticate through it.
Costs, availability, and what not to infer from old comparisons
Exact prices are intentionally absent because regional retailer prices, taxes, bundles, and stock change. Compare the current delivered price in your country, warranty coverage, return window, replacement accessories, and whether the seller can provide firmware support. A lower sticker price is not a saving if your library requires a different model or your purchased books use incompatible DRM.
Older comparison pages can also mix generations. Use the current model support page or official specification page for the device you are ordering, and treat broad buying guides such as WIRED’s 2026 comparison as orientation rather than a substitute for regional compatibility checks.
A practical buying checklist
- Inventory your content: Separate vendor purchases, DRM-free EPUB files, library loans, audiobooks, comics, and app-only subscriptions.
- Mark non-negotiables: Decide whether you require color, physical page-turn buttons, Android apps, offline library reading, or a compact monochrome body.
- Check DRM: For every major store, verify the file type and authorization method before buying more books.
- Check library eligibility: Confirm country, exact model, library catalogue, and—where relevant—firmware.
- Choose the workflow: Prefer a focused Kobo if you mainly read EPUB books; choose BOOX for Android app breadth; choose PocketBook when its Libby implementation matches your library.
- Validate the transfer: Read the model-specific documentation and, if possible, test one representative book before moving your whole collection.
- Review the purchase locally: Check current price, stock, warranty, returns, and software-update availability in your market.
Which alternative should you buy?
Buy the Kobo Clara BW when you want the simplest compact black-and-white alternative and your books are primarily EPUB-oriented. Buy the BOOX Go Color 7 when third-party Android apps, color, EPUB/AZW3 support, and page-turn buttons outweigh the appeal of a tightly focused reader. Buy the PocketBook Verse Pro when your library confirms the documented Libby workflow and your unit can run the relevant firmware. Choose the Kobo Libra Colour when color and a larger Kobo form factor are more important than the Clara BW’s compact focus.
None of these choices automatically reproduces Kindle’s email delivery or proves superior privacy. They reduce dependence on Amazon in different ways; your books’ source and your library’s rules determine which reduction is useful.
