If you want a color-screen e-reader instead of a Kindle, start with Kobo’s Clara Colour for compact, reading-focused use or the Kobo Libra Colour if page-turn buttons and stylus compatibility matter more. Both are color E Ink readers; the right choice depends on size, controls, annotation needs, and the software and bookstore environment you prefer.
Which color-screen Kindle alternative should you choose?
The Kobo Clara Colour is the most straightforward option established here: Kobo lists a 6-inch Kaleido 3 color E Ink screen. The Libra Colour adds physical page-turn buttons, screen rotation, and stylus compatibility, making it a better fit if you want to annotate or take notes as well as read.

These are distinct trade-offs rather than a simple ranking. A smaller device may suit one-handed reading and portability; buttons and stylus support may be more useful if you read with a larger device or mark up books. Compare the features you will actually use before paying for a more capable model.

What to weigh beyond color
- Size and portability: The Clara Colour’s listed screen is 6 inches. For any larger alternative, check its current official specifications rather than assuming the dimensions from a comparison article.
- Physical controls: Kobo explicitly lists page-turn buttons for the Libra Colour. This can matter if you prefer turning pages without tapping the screen.
- Writing and annotation: Libra Colour supports a compatible stylus, but compatibility does not mean a stylus is included. Verify the exact accessory and whether it is sold separately in your region.
- Store and software environment: Consider where you buy books and how you manage your library. The sources here do not establish ecosystem-specific advantages, so check the current device and retailer terms against your own reading habits.
- Price and availability: These change by region and over time. Kobo’s product pages are useful for checking current listings; no stable price comparison is established here.
What about BOOX and PocketBook?
Current comparison coverage also names BOOX and PocketBook among color e-reader options. One comparison describes the BOOX Go Color 7 Gen II as an option, but the available evidence here does not verify its official specifications or current availability. Treat both brands as candidates for further checking, not as directly validated recommendations: consult each manufacturer’s current product page for the exact model, screen, features, and regional availability before comparing it with Kobo.
For broader comparisons, Tom’s Guide’s e-reader guide discusses Kindle, Kobo, BOOX, and PocketBook devices. Another comparison frames screen size and price as useful points when considering Kobo Clara Colour alongside Kindle Colorsoft; its prices are secondary-source information and should be checked live: TechRadar’s comparison.
