Google Search Console is the essential free source for your own site’s actual Google clicks, impressions and queries. Semrush is the stronger choice when you want daily, multi-location tracking inside a broad SEO suite. Ahrefs fits teams that configure their own keyword-and-location sets and want rank tracking alongside Ahrefs’ SEO data.
These products measure different things, so no single tool is universally “most accurate.” Use the same search engine, query, country or city, language, device and date range when comparing results, and treat a ranking change as a diagnostic signal rather than a business outcome.
What a rank tracker actually measures
There are two distinct approaches:
- First-party performance reporting: Google Search Console reports how a verified property performed in Google Search, including queries, impressions, clicks and an average-position field.
- Configured keyword monitoring: Semrush and Ahrefs let you choose queries and locations, then check where a domain appears for those settings. Depending on the product, you can also see competitors and SERP features.
A Search Console average is not a promise that every searcher saw your page in one fixed position. Google says results can vary by location, language and device, and positions change over time. Compare like with like before interpreting a difference.

Google Search Console: the first-party baseline
What it does well
Search Console shows the queries that generated impressions and clicks for your verified site, along with country, device and other performance dimensions. Its API defines position as average position. That makes it the best starting point for diagnosing how Google users actually encountered your pages, rather than estimating visibility from a third-party scan.

Important limitations
Search Console does not function like a traditional tracker where you lock a keyword to a city, device and search engine and receive a scheduled observed position. Google’s API documentation also warns that internal limits mean not every possible row is guaranteed to be returned. Average position can combine many impressions with different placements, so do not read it as a single universal rank.
How to use it
- Establish a baseline of clicks, impressions, queries and average position for the verified property.
- Investigate sudden changes over comparable date windows and segments such as country and device.
- Pair rankings with clicks, impressions, organic traffic, conversions and revenue. Google’s traffic guidance cautions against treating absolute position as the main success measure.
Semrush Position Tracking: daily, configurable monitoring
Why choose it
Semrush describes Position Tracking as daily monitoring across devices and locations, with competitor comparisons and visibility into SERP features. It is part of a wider SEO suite, so the same subscription can support keyword research, backlink work, site auditing and reporting. That breadth is valuable when rank checks are one step in a larger workflow.

- Organizations willing to pay for a suite rather than a narrowly focused tracker.
Vendor feature descriptions establish what Semrush offers, but they do not independently prove superior ranking accuracy. Compare its output with Search Console and your business metrics.

Ahrefs Rank Tracker: keyword-location control
How counting works
Ahrefs says Rank Tracker counts each keyword-location pair. Tracking “blue widgets” in one location consumes one unit; tracking that same query in two locations consumes two. Budget capacity around the combinations you genuinely need, especially for local campaigns.
Do not confuse two Ahrefs reports
Rank Tracker contains the manually selected keywords and locations you configure. Ahrefs’ Organic Keywords report is a different product view with its own, programmatically determined update cadence. Do not transfer the tracker’s weekly schedule to that report or assume the report contains the same controlled set.

A rank increase can be useful evidence, but it is not the final result. Evaluate whether impressions, clicks, qualified traffic, leads, sales or other relevant outcomes changed. A page can move up without attracting valuable visits, while a lower average position can coexist with more impressions and clicks for a broader set of searches. Keep the tracker as a diagnostic layer in a measurement chain that ends with business results.
