Best Keyboards and Mice for Samsung DeX: How to Choose a Reliable Wireless Setup

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

The most practical starting point for Samsung DeX is a Bluetooth keyboard-and-mouse combo because DeX supports Bluetooth pairing as well as wired and wireless USB peripherals. Choose Bluetooth when you want a clean setup without a receiver; choose USB when your dock, monitor hub, or adapter already provides an accessible port or when you prefer a receiver-based connection.

There is no universally best model for every Galaxy phone, tablet, display, desk, and travel bag. The right purchase depends on your DeX device’s ports, your display connection, keyboard layout, mouse size, battery and charging preferences, and whether the apps you use support desktop-style input.

What Samsung DeX supports

Samsung describes DeX as supporting keyboard and mouse input through three practical connection types: Bluetooth, wired USB, and wireless USB devices that use a receiver. Its official support guidance states: “You can use a wired or wireless USB keyboard and mouse, or pair a keyboard and mouse using Bluetooth.” That makes a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse combo a legitimate category choice, not a workaround that depends on an unofficial hack.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

DeX exposes familiar desktop interactions, including keyboard shortcuts, a mouse pointer, drag-and-drop, and Alt+Tab window switching. The exact experience still depends on the Galaxy model, DeX version, connected display, hub or adapter, and the applications you run.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth is usually the simplest option for a phone or tablet connected to a monitor or television. It does not consume a USB port, and a keyboard and mouse can connect directly to the Galaxy device. This is useful with a USB-C video adapter that has only one available port, or with Wireless DeX where no physical dock is involved.

USB cable

A wired keyboard or mouse can connect through a compatible USB port on a DeX Station, DeX Pad, monitor hub, or USB-C adapter. A USB-C Galaxy device may need an OTG adapter to accept a USB-A peripheral. Confirm the adapter’s connector direction and that it supports data rather than charging only.

USB receiver

A wireless keyboard or mouse that uses a USB receiver behaves like a USB accessory from DeX’s point of view. The receiver must plug into a usable USB port on the dock, monitor hub, or OTG adapter. A receiver-based set can be convenient when both devices share one receiver, but it is less attractive if your setup has no spare USB-A port or if the receiver is easy to lose while travelling.

Check the complete DeX setup before buying

Keyboard and mouse compatibility is only one part of the system. First identify how DeX will appear on the screen, then confirm that your Galaxy device and display support that route.

Wired display connection

With a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, dock, or DeX accessory, the Galaxy device sends video through the adapter while the keyboard and mouse connect by Bluetooth or through the adapter’s USB ports. Check whether the adapter provides the video standard and charging pass-through you need. A hub that offers only power and video may not provide a data port for a USB receiver.

Wireless DeX

Samsung’s US support information lists Wireless DeX targets that include Samsung televisions from 2018 onward, Samsung Smart Monitors, and other displays that support Miracast, subject to phone and tablet compatibility. Samsung also lists device-specific exceptions, including some FE models and older or newer device families. Verify the exact Galaxy model and receiving display in Samsung’s current compatibility information rather than assuming that any Android phone or smart television will work.

Ports and power

Write down the ports available on the Galaxy device, dock, monitor, and adapter. A setup with one USB-C port may need that port for video, charging, or both. Bluetooth avoids the data-port conflict. A receiver-based keyboard and mouse may require an OTG adapter, a powered hub, or a dock with USB-A. If a hub is bus-powered, several USB accessories can also affect power delivery and stability.

How to choose the keyboard

Prioritize the characteristics that affect your actual DeX work rather than choosing by wireless label alone.

Layout and size

A full-size keyboard gives you a dedicated number pad and conventional spacing, which can help with spreadsheets and repeated numeric entry. Tenkeyless and compact layouts reclaim desk space but may move navigation, function, or editing keys onto a function layer. Check the printed layout, enter-key shape, backslash position, and language variant before ordering; a keyboard with the wrong regional layout can be frustrating even when every key technically works.

Portable versus desk-based design

For a tablet or phone that travels between rooms, look for a compact body, a protective case or cover, and a stable way to position the keyboard. A heavier full-size board is less likely to slide during long typing sessions but takes more room in a bag. Folding designs can save space, although their hinge and key spacing should be inspected in person when possible.

Bluetooth profiles and device switching

Some keyboards can remember multiple hosts and switch between them. That is useful if one keyboard moves between a Galaxy tablet, laptop, and phone, but switching controls vary. Confirm how many devices can be stored, whether switching requires a dedicated key, and whether the keyboard uses Bluetooth Low Energy or another profile. Do not assume that a feature advertised for Windows, macOS, Linux, or ChromeOS has been certified for DeX.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Backlighting

Backlighting improves visibility in a dim room but increases power consumption. If long battery intervals matter more than illuminated keys, choose a board with a physical brightness control or a reliable way to disable lighting. Treat manufacturer battery figures as conditional estimates, not guarantees.

  • Comfortable Right-handed Mouse: This wireless USB mouse with dongle works well for this wireless mouse and keyboard combo, featuring a contoured shape for all-day comfort and smooth, precise tracking and scrolling for easier navigation.

Charging and battery access

Decide whether you prefer an internal rechargeable battery, replaceable cells, or a keyboard that can operate while charging. Check the charging connector and whether the cable can remain attached without blocking nearby ports. A keyboard that stops accepting input while charging may be inconvenient during a long DeX session.

How to choose the mouse

Shape and hand fit

A mouse should support your hand without forcing your wrist into an awkward angle. Larger, taller shapes can suit a permanent desk; smaller travel mice fit beside a tablet but may feel cramped for extended work. Left-handed users should verify whether the buttons and contour are symmetrical.

Scroll wheel and button layout

DeX windows, web pages, and documents make the scroll wheel a high-use control. A distinct middle click, predictable wheel resistance, and side buttons can improve navigation, but extra buttons may do nothing in an app that does not expose desktop mappings. A simple two-button design is often easier to pack and troubleshoot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bluetooth, receiver, or cable

Bluetooth keeps the desk clear and preserves USB ports. A receiver can provide a dedicated wireless link but adds a small component that must remain with the mouse or keyboard. Wired mice avoid battery charging but introduce cable drag and require a suitable USB connection. Match the mouse connection to the same port and adapter constraints you identified for the keyboard.

Tracking surface and travel use

Even a capable sensor needs a usable surface. A compact mouse pad is worthwhile when using DeX on a glass table, glossy surface, or a television stand. If the mouse is mainly for travel, consider whether its power switch, receiver storage, and body shape prevent accidental activation in a bag.

Combo or separate peripherals?

A combo is convenient when you want one purchase and possibly one shared receiver. It also gives the keyboard and mouse a consistent design and battery system. Separate purchases make sense when you already own one working peripheral, need a different keyboard layout, or want an ergonomic mouse that is not offered in a set.

Pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse with DeX

Samsung’s documented pairing path is handled in the Galaxy device’s Bluetooth settings. Pair each peripheral before starting work so you can identify whether a problem belongs to Bluetooth or to DeX itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Connections > Bluetooth on the Galaxy phone or tablet. Menu wording can vary slightly by One UI version.
  2. Turn on the keyboard, then activate its pairing mode. The indicator or pairing key normally flashes while the device is discoverable.
  3. Wait for the keyboard name to appear under available devices and select it.
  4. If a pairing code appears, type that code on the keyboard and press Enter. Complete any confirmation shown on the Galaxy screen.
  5. Repeat the process for the mouse. Move it after pairing to confirm that the pointer responds.
  6. Launch DeX and test typing, clicking, scrolling, drag-and-drop, and Alt+Tab before beginning important work.

If a peripheral was previously paired with another computer, it may reconnect there instead of entering pairing mode. Disconnect it from the other host or select a different stored Bluetooth channel first.

Connect a USB keyboard, mouse, or receiver

  1. Identify the data-capable USB port on the DeX Station, DeX Pad, monitor hub, or USB-C OTG adapter.
  2. Connect the keyboard cable, mouse cable, or wireless receiver. If the Galaxy device has USB-C and the accessory is USB-A, use a compatible OTG adapter or hub.
  3. Connect the display and power path required by your DeX arrangement.
  4. Wait several seconds for the pointer and keyboard to become active, then open a text field and test both devices.
  5. If the receiver is not detected, move it to another data port, remove unnecessary USB devices, and check whether the hub requires external power.

Do not judge a USB accessory by whether its lights turn on. Power can be present while data is unavailable; a text-entry and pointer test is the meaningful check.

Use DeX productively once input works

Keyboard shortcuts and pointer actions are where DeX peripherals provide the biggest efficiency gain. Alt+Tab switches between windows, drag-and-drop moves content where an application permits it, and a mouse pointer makes precise selections easier than touch input. Map your workflow around the applications you actually use: browser tabs, document editors, file managers, messaging tools, and media apps can expose different shortcut and pointer behavior.

Keep the Galaxy device positioned where its screen, charging cable, and Bluetooth status are reachable. A compact stand can prevent accidental cable strain, while a separate mouse surface avoids erratic tracking on reflective furniture. These are physical setup choices, but they often determine whether a wireless DeX desk feels dependable.

Understand app and window limitations

DeX does not force every Android application to behave like a desktop program. Samsung’s developer FAQ notes that an app can explicitly disable mouse and keyboard input. Apps that do not support multi-window mode can also display a DeX compatibility warning. In those cases, changing the keyboard or mouse may not solve the problem.

  • If typing works in a browser or text editor but not in one app, check that app’s settings and support documentation.
  • If a window will not resize or split, the limitation may be the app’s multi-window support.
  • If pointer clicks work but a shortcut does not, the app may not implement that desktop command.
  • If a game or media app captures input differently, use its own control settings where available.

Troubleshoot a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse that does not work

Nothing appears in Bluetooth settings

  • Charge the peripheral or replace its batteries.
  • Hold the pairing button long enough to enter discoverable mode; a simple power-on state may only reconnect to an old host.
  • Move the accessory close to the Galaxy device and temporarily turn off Bluetooth on the computer or tablet that previously used it.
  • Restart Bluetooth on the Galaxy device and search again.

The device pairs but stops responding in DeX

  • Test it in a normal Galaxy text field or pointer context to separate a Bluetooth problem from an app limitation.
  • Remove the device from Bluetooth settings, put it back into pairing mode, and pair it again.
  • Check whether another stored host has taken over the keyboard or mouse’s active channel.
  • Restart DeX and the Galaxy device if the connection works outside DeX but not after the desktop starts.

A USB receiver is not detected

  • Confirm that the port is a data port and that the adapter supports OTG.
  • Try the receiver without other USB accessories attached.
  • Use a powered hub or dock if the current hub cannot supply stable power.
  • Check that the receiver is the one supplied for that keyboard or mouse and has not been mixed up with another device.

The pointer moves but clicks or scrolling fail

Try a different surface, inspect the mouse wheel for obstruction, and test another application. If movement works everywhere but a particular app ignores clicks or scrolling, the app may be restricting mouse input rather than the hardware failing.

Battery life: read the conditions, not just the headline

Battery figures vary with backlight brightness, polling or connection behavior, charging habits, and computing conditions. The numbers printed on a product page are manufacturer estimates under stated settings. They are not DeX test results and should not be treated as a guaranteed interval.

For a concrete example, Logitech lists up to 10 days on a full charge with predefined settings or up to five months with backlighting switched off for its MX Keys for Business keyboard. Logitech says battery life varies with usage and computing conditions. That specification illustrates why two runtime figures can coexist; it does not establish DeX compatibility or predict how long every keyboard will run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When comparing products, record whether the claim assumes lighting off, a particular brightness level, a one-time charge, or replaceable cells. Also check whether the mouse has a low-battery indicator and whether the keyboard can be used while charging.

A practical buying checklist

  • Confirm the exact Galaxy phone or tablet model and its current DeX support.
  • Choose wired display, Wireless DeX, or another display route before selecting peripherals.
  • Count free data-capable USB ports on the dock, monitor hub, and adapter.
  • Pick Bluetooth if you want to avoid a receiver; pick USB or a receiver if your setup already has a convenient port.
  • Match the keyboard layout and size to your language, desk, and numeric-entry needs.
  • Match the mouse shape to your hand and decide whether travel size or long-session comfort matters more.
  • Check pairing memory and switching controls if the peripherals will serve several hosts.
  • Read battery claims with their lighting and usage conditions attached.
  • Verify charging connectors, replaceable-cell access, and whether input works during charging.
  • Confirm the apps you rely on support mouse, keyboard, and multi-window behavior.

Bottom line for a DeX purchase

For most people building a new DeX workstation, start by looking for a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse combo that matches the required layout, hand fit, battery design, and portability. It avoids the receiver and OTG-port questions while staying within Samsung’s documented connection methods. Choose a USB or receiver-based setup when your dock or monitor hub already offers a dependable data port, or when that connection style better suits your existing equipment.

Before paying, verify the complete chain: Galaxy model, display method, available ports, adapter or dock, and the applications you plan to run. Samsung supports the connection categories, but no single keyboard and mouse is guaranteed to behave identically across every device, dock, receiver, display, and app.
