There is no verified “best preset” for Kernel Hearts yet. Whitethorn Games’ June 7, 2025 announcement described the game as still in development and did not publish a graphics-settings table, frame-rate target, controller map, or accessibility menu. Until the final build documents those options, the safest approach is to prioritize stable frame delivery, then tune camera, lock-on, dodge, and control placement in that order.
The recommendations below separate confirmed information from practical advice. They apply to the announced PC version through Steam and Xbox Series X|S, but exact menu names and values should be treated as provisional until the shipped version exposes them.

What is actually known about Kernel Hearts settings
Kernel Hearts is described by its publisher as an action-packed, co-op multiplayer roguelike from EPHEMERA and Whitethorn Games. Runs combine temporary skills that improve attacks, spells, and movement. After a run, you return to a lab where you can unlock and equip up to 256KB of skill chips for persistent customization. You can play solo or with up to three friends.

Those systems matter for settings because combat is built around rapid movement, attacks, spells, transformations, boss encounters, and online effects from several players. However, the announcement does not establish a target such as 30, 60, or 120 frames per second, nor does it list resolution modes, upscaling, shadows, motion blur, field of view, dead-zone controls, input buffering, or remapping. No authoritative measurements of frame rate, frame-time consistency, input latency, or hardware performance are available.

A Big-N gameplay report (the date is not specified in the available citation) observes that the camera may fail to recenter behind the character during lock-on and that dodging can sometimes feel inconsistent. Those are third-party observations, not a developer guarantee, but they identify the first controls worth testing when the game is available to you.
The best order for configuring the game
Do not begin by chasing maximum image quality. A stable response is more valuable in a fast roguelike than a sharper effect that causes uneven frame delivery during a boss or a four-player fight.
- Choose the most stable frame-rate mode the game exposes. If the menu offers a frame-rate cap, start with the highest cap that remains consistently smooth rather than the highest number shown. A locked lower rate is preferable to repeated swings between rates.
- Reduce expensive effects before compromising responsiveness. If combat feels uneven, lower resolution or the most demanding effects first. The exact effects and labels are not documented, so change one option at a time and observe a repeatable encounter.
- Test camera and lock-on behavior. Look for camera recenter, lock-on sensitivity, target switching, or related options before adjusting cosmetic settings.
- Make dodge immediately reachable. If remapping, an input buffer, dead-zone, or sensitivity control exists, put dodge on a button you can press without releasing movement. Test it in ordinary encounters before relying on it in a boss run.
- Keep combat actions adjacent. Movement, attack, dodge, lock-on, and transformation should be reachable without taking your thumb away from movement. The game’s announced temporary attack, spell, movement, and transformation skills make these the controls that deserve the most practice.
- Repeat the test in co-op. A solo test cannot reveal how frame pacing and input clarity hold up when several players, effects, and enemy waves are active.
Graphics settings: how to find a smooth baseline
Start with frame-time stability
Use the game’s own performance display if the final build provides one. If it does not, judge consistency through the same route, room, or encounter rather than a single glance at an uncrowded area. Pay attention to short pauses, uneven camera motion, and delayed actions; an average frame-rate number would not capture those problems by itself.

If the game offers a cap, select a cap your system can hold during combat, not only in the lab or menus. On Xbox Series X|S, select the performance-oriented mode if one exists and compare it with a quality mode only after checking a busy encounter. The announcement confirms the platform, but it does not confirm that either mode will be present.

Lower settings in a controlled sequence
When performance is uneven, change one category at a time so you know which adjustment helped. This sequence is a practical method, not a verified Kernel Hearts preset:
- Lower output resolution or the render-resolution scale if the game exposes one.
- Reduce the most costly lighting, shadow, volumetric, reflections, or effects option available.
- Disable motion blur if it makes camera movement harder to read; this is a clarity choice, not a guaranteed performance fix.
- Keep texture quality as high as your memory budget allows unless the game reports a memory warning or shows stutter when loading areas.
- Re-test the same combat situation after every change.
Do not assume that turning every slider to Low is automatically best. A lower image can make targets and telegraphed attacks harder to distinguish, while an unstable frame time can make dodges feel late. The useful setting is the one that keeps control timing predictable while preserving enough visual clarity to read attacks.
Compare options with the right criteria
| Criterion | What to check | What is established for Kernel Hearts |
|---|---|---|
| Frame-time stability | Does camera motion remain even during effects, enemy waves, and boss attacks? | No authoritative benchmark or target is published. |
| Image clarity | Can you identify enemies, attack tells, spell effects, and movement hazards? | No final resolution or quality table is published. |
| Input responsiveness | Do attack, dodge, lock-on, and transformation trigger without a visible delay? | No measured latency is published. |
| Camera and lock-on consistency | Does the camera recenter and stay readable when a target moves? | Big-N reports possible recentering problems; this is an observation, not a guarantee. |
| Dodge reliability | Does the game register the input consistently from movement and neutral positions? | Big-N reports that dodging may sometimes feel inconsistent. |
| Solo versus co-op behavior | Does the same configuration remain smooth with several players and effects? | The game supports solo play or teams of up to four; comparative performance data is not stated. |
| Handheld versus docked output | Is there a handheld mode to compare? | Not applicable to the announced PC and Xbox Series X|S platforms; no handheld version is announced. |
Camera and lock-on: fixing a view that feels wrong
Check the camera before changing graphics
If the character does not stay centered behind the target, first determine whether the problem appears only during lock-on. Turn lock-on off for a few encounters, then re-enable it and observe whether the camera fails to recenter, swings past the target, or loses the target during a transformation. This distinction tells you whether to look for camera-recenter behavior, target switching, or general camera sensitivity.
Options to look for in the final build
- Camera recenter: a toggle, hold action, or sensitivity slider that controls how quickly the view returns behind the character.
- Lock-on behavior: a choice between maintaining one target, switching to the nearest target, or switching with a directional input.
- Target-switch input: a dedicated button is easier to use than repeatedly releasing and reacquiring lock-on.
- Camera sensitivity: lower it if small stick movements overshoot; raise it only when you can track attacks without fighting the camera.
- Inversion and camera acceleration: these affect comfort and consistency, although their availability is unconfirmed.
Exact labels and values are not documented. Make the smallest change possible, then test the same target type from the same distance. If lock-on remains confusing, temporarily play without it in ordinary encounters and reserve it for enemies whose movement is difficult to track manually.

Controller layout for attacks, dodges, and transformations
Use a reachability rule, not a copied preset
The best layout is the one that lets you move and perform an emergency dodge at the same time. Place attack, dodge, lock-on, and transformation on controls that can be reached while your movement thumb or finger stays in position. Put less time-critical menu or utility actions farther away.
Kernel Hearts’ announced design includes temporary skills that improve attacks, spells, and movement, plus transformations. Because the available skill set can change during and between runs, bind the actions you use repeatedly rather than assuming one fixed attack pattern will remain optimal.
Basic remapping checklist
- Write down the default buttons for movement, attack, dodge, lock-on, spell or skill activation, transformation, camera control, and interaction.
- Identify the action you miss most often. If that is dodge, move it before changing anything else.
- Keep lock-on and target switching close enough to use without abandoning movement.
- Place transformation where it cannot be triggered accidentally during normal attacks, but where it remains reachable during a boss phase.
- Run a short practice loop: move, attack, dodge, lock on, switch targets, activate a skill, transform, and return to movement.
- Use the same layout in solo and co-op so muscle memory does not change when the fight becomes busier.
If the final build lacks remapping, use the platform’s supported controller configuration only if it preserves the game’s prompts and does not add a layer of input delay. The game’s own settings should remain the first choice when available.

Making dodge input more dependable
Separate missed timing from missed registration
A failed dodge can mean the input was not registered, the action was on cooldown, the character was committed to another animation, or the timing was simply late. Test from a neutral stance, while moving, immediately after an attack, and during a skill animation. If the command fails only in one state, the issue may be action priority rather than the controller.

Settings and habits to test
- Input buffer: if an option exists, a small buffer can make a dodge entered just before an animation ends register more consistently. The correct value is unknown, so avoid assuming a maximum setting is best.
- Stick dead zone: a large dead zone can delay movement or make a diagonal input fail to begin. A very small dead zone can introduce drift. Adjust in small steps and test neutral position afterward.
- Button placement: use a face or shoulder button that is reachable without releasing movement.
- Camera orientation: verify that the direction you intend to dodge matches the character’s facing when lock-on is active.
- Frame pacing: if the game pauses or stutters during effects, stabilize performance before judging dodge timing.
Practice in ordinary encounters first. A boss attempt is a poor place to discover that a remapped button, dead zone, or camera behavior is unreliable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Solo and four-player testing
Whitethorn Games says you can play alone or with up to three friends. Co-op changes the conditions that matter most: more effects may appear at once, enemy waves can overlap, and camera priorities become harder to read. After setting a solo baseline, repeat the same checks in a busy multiplayer fight.
- Confirm that movement and dodge still feel immediate when several players use skills together.
- Watch for frame-time spikes during transformations, spells, and large enemy groups.
- Check whether lock-on remains on the intended target when other players move through the camera.
- Ask whether visual effects obscure attack tells; if they do, favor clarity-oriented options over decorative quality.
- Keep the same controller layout and compare the result with your solo practice.
A setting that is comfortable alone is not automatically suitable for co-op. The game’s team size is confirmed, but no published test establishes a winning quality or performance mode for multiplayer.
Troubleshooting by symptom
“The game feels uneven even when the image looks sharp.”
Choose the most stable frame-rate mode, lower resolution or costly effects, and retest during combat rather than in a quiet area. If the final build includes a cap, use one your system can sustain. Do not diagnose input latency from a single frame-rate reading.

“The camera will not settle behind my character.”
Test lock-on on and off, then look for recenter, sensitivity, and target-switch options. If the behavior occurs only with lock-on, change camera controls before reducing graphics quality. Big-N’s report describes this as an observed behavior, not a confirmed universal defect.
“Dodge works sometimes and fails at other times.”
Test neutral, moving, post-attack, and skill-animation states. Check whether the final build provides an input buffer, dead-zone, or remapping control. Stabilize frame pacing and move dodge to an immediately reachable button before attempting a difficult encounter.
“I lose track of targets in co-op.”
Use a consistent target-switch input if available, reduce camera sensitivity if you overshoot, and favor visual clarity over effects that obscure enemy tells. Recheck lock-on while several players are using skills.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“There are no options matching these names.”
Do not assume the game is missing a feature because a label differs. The publisher has not released a definitive settings map. Use the closest documented control, record what the option changes, and avoid treating an inferred value as an official recommendation.
What remains unconfirmed
Until a final build and official settings documentation are available, the following cannot be stated as facts:
- A guaranteed frame-rate target or resolution on PC or Xbox Series X|S.
- A universal Low, Medium, High, Quality, or Performance preset.
- Specific values for camera sensitivity, dead zones, input buffering, field of view, motion blur, or lock-on behavior.
- The existence or scope of accessibility features, including broader remapping or visual adjustments.
- A measured winner between quality and performance modes, or between solo and co-op configurations.
That uncertainty is important: a number presented as “the best Kernel Hearts setting” would be speculation unless it comes from the final game and a repeatable test.
