Quick recommendation by situation
| What you want | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The broadest TV-device compatibility | Jellyfin for Android TV | It is the official client for Android TV and Fire TV, with Google TV and Nvidia Shield also identified in Jellyfin’s Kotlin SDK documentation. |
| A Kodi-style living-room interface | Jellyfin for Kodi | It can synchronize selected Jellyfin libraries into Kodi’s local database for a local-media-style experience. |
| Lightweight Jellyfin browsing inside Kodi | JellyCon | It browses and plays Jellyfin media without the fuller local-library synchronization used by Jellyfin for Kodi. |
| A different native Android interface | Findroid | Jellyfin’s Android SDK documentation describes it as a native interface for browsing and playing movies and series. |
| Reliable direct play | Any client that matches your files and device decoders | Direct play depends on the client, hardware decoder, video and audio codecs, subtitles, and server settings—not the app name alone. |
There is no universal speed or reliability winner. Performance varies with the television or streaming stick, network, library size, subtitle format, and whether the server must transcode.
Jellyfin for Android TV: the default choice
Jellyfin describes this as “the official Jellyfin app for Android TV and Fire TV devices.” The Kotlin SDK documentation expands that platform scope to Android TV, Google TV, Nvidia Shield, and Amazon Fire TV. That makes it the most straightforward first install when several people in a household use different Android-based television hardware.

Where it is available
- Google Play: the normal installation route on Android TV and Google TV devices.
- Amazon Appstore: the official route on compatible Fire TV hardware.
- F-Droid: an alternative distribution channel. The F-Droid listing records version 0.19.10 (191099), added on 19 August 2026; confirm the listing’s current version before installing because releases can change.
Store availability can differ by country and device certification. If the app does not appear in a television store, verify that the device is running a supported Android TV or Fire TV environment rather than a phone-only Android build.
What the interface is suited to
The Android TV client is designed for remote-control navigation: rows of posters, focused selection states, and playback controls intended for a television rather than a touchscreen. It is the sensible option when you want the fewest moving parts—one Jellyfin app, one server connection, and no separate media-center database.
When to choose something else
Use another client when your priority is Kodi’s add-on ecosystem, Kodi’s local database behavior, or a different Android presentation. Switching clients can also be useful when a particular file’s audio, subtitle, or codec combination behaves differently on your hardware. Check the codec matrix and test representative files instead of assuming that a different interface will eliminate transcoding.
Jellyfin for Kodi versus JellyCon
Jellyfin’s Kodi documentation includes Android TV, FireTV Stick, and other TV boxes under its embedded-device setup. Within Kodi, there are two materially different Jellyfin approaches.
Jellyfin for Kodi: deeper integration
Jellyfin for Kodi can synchronize selected Jellyfin libraries into Kodi’s local database. Once synchronized, movies and series appear more like media managed directly by Kodi: browsing can use Kodi’s local metadata and artwork database, and the interface integrates with Kodi’s normal library views.

The trade-off is administrative complexity. You select which libraries to sync, allow the initial import to complete, and keep the local database updated as your Jellyfin server changes. A large library can take longer to import and occupy local storage for metadata and artwork.
Jellyfin’s documentation notes a useful choice: avoiding synchronized metadata can make switching between servers or users easier. In that mode, details are requested from the server while you browse, so navigation may take a little longer than with a fully synchronized local database.

JellyCon: lighter, server-driven browsing
JellyCon is described as a lightweight Kodi add-on for browsing and playing Jellyfin media. It is a better fit when you want Kodi’s remote-friendly shell but do not want Jellyfin libraries copied into Kodi’s local database. The server remains the source for library browsing and item details.
Because JellyCon and Jellyfin for Kodi make different metadata choices, decide first whether you want a local Kodi library or a thinner client. Installing both is usually unnecessary and can make it unclear which add-on is responsible for playback, artwork, and library updates.
Embedded-device installation outline
- Install Kodi on the Android TV, Google TV, Fire TV Stick, or other supported TV box.
- In Kodi’s add-on area, install either Jellyfin for Kodi for synchronized-library integration or JellyCon for lightweight browsing.
- Enter the address of your Jellyfin server and authenticate with the intended user account.
- For Jellyfin for Kodi, select only the libraries you want synchronized and allow the first scan to finish before judging browsing performance.
- Play several representative files, including files with your usual subtitle and audio formats, and note whether the Jellyfin server reports direct play, direct stream, or transcoding.
The exact menu labels can vary by Kodi release and add-on version, so follow the current Jellyfin Kodi documentation if an option has moved.

Findroid: a native Android alternative
Jellyfin’s Kotlin SDK documentation identifies Findroid as a native Android interface for browsing and playing movies and series. It is worth considering if you prefer a different layout from the official Android TV client or want to evaluate another Android presentation of the same server library.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFindroid should be treated more cautiously for a dedicated television remote. The documentation establishes its native Android movie-and-series interface, but it does not establish identical TV-navigation behavior across every Android TV, Google TV, or Fire TV model. Before deploying it to a family room, verify focus movement, back-button behavior, text entry, and playback controls on the exact remote you use.
Direct play, direct stream, and transcoding
“Direct play” means the client and device can use the original video, audio, container, and subtitle formats without the server changing the media. “Direct stream” generally leaves the encoded tracks intact while the server changes the container or delivery details. “Transcoding” means the server decodes and re-encodes one or more tracks so the client can play them.
Jellyfin maintains a codec-support matrix covering Android TV and Kodi. Use that matrix as the authoritative comparison reference, then check your device’s decoder capabilities and your server’s transcoding configuration.
What to check in your library
- Video codec and profile: the same codec can have profiles, levels, bit depths, or frame rates that exceed a device’s decoder.
- Audio format: a television may decode the video but require conversion for a particular multichannel or lossless audio track.
- Container: a client may support the underlying tracks but not the way they are packaged.
- Subtitles: unsupported text or image subtitles can trigger a video transcode when the server has to burn them into the picture.
- Network path: a fast local connection and a constrained remote connection can produce different playback outcomes for the same file.
- Server resources: transcoding requires CPU or GPU capacity and configured temporary storage; an underpowered server can buffer even when the client is otherwise compatible.
How to test before migrating a library
- Choose one ordinary file, one high-bitrate file, one file with your most common audio format, and one file with subtitles.
- Play each file in the candidate client while watching the Jellyfin dashboard’s playback information.
- Record whether the session is direct play, direct stream, or transcoding, and which track caused a conversion.
- If conversion occurs, test the same file with subtitles disabled and with an alternate audio track to isolate the incompatibility.
- Use the codec matrix to decide whether changing the client, changing the playback device, or allowing server transcoding is the appropriate fix.
Do not promise universal direct play: the result is a property of the specific file, client, decoder, network, and server settings together.

Choosing by platform
Android TV and Google TV
Install Jellyfin for Android TV first. Google TV is covered in Jellyfin’s Kotlin SDK documentation even though store presentation and launcher labels can differ from one device generation to another. If you want Kodi’s interface, install Kodi and then choose Jellyfin for Kodi or JellyCon based on the metadata behavior described above.
Fire TV and Fire TV Stick
Jellyfin documents an official Fire TV client, and its Kodi documentation names FireTV Stick among supported embedded devices. The official Android TV client through the Amazon Appstore is the least complicated route. Kodi is useful when you already use Kodi for other media or add-ons and want Jellyfin inside that same environment.
On a Fire TV Stick, storage, memory, wireless conditions, and hardware decoding vary by model. Check the codec matrix and test playback on the exact generation you own rather than generalizing from another Fire TV device.
Nvidia Shield and other Android TV boxes
The Kotlin SDK documentation explicitly includes Nvidia Shield. Jellyfin for Android TV is still the natural starting point, while Kodi remains an option for users who prefer its library and add-on model. A more capable box can reduce transcoding pressure, but it cannot make an unsupported audio or subtitle format universally compatible.

Client choice changes where library information is obtained. Jellyfin for Kodi can keep selected metadata in Kodi’s local database; JellyCon and a non-synchronized Kodi setup request details from the server as needed. Local synchronization can make repeated browsing feel more self-contained, while server-driven browsing avoids a large local import and can simplify changing servers or users.
Best Value
- HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
The supplied Jellyfin documentation does not establish a universal advantage for multiple-server or multi-user workflows across every client. Test the account-switching and server-selection flow you actually need, especially if a television is shared by several households or profiles.
Updates and maintenance
- Play Store and Amazon Appstore installations: use the device store’s update mechanism and check the installed version when troubleshooting.
- F-Droid installations: refresh the repository metadata and review the current listing before updating. The recorded 0.19.10 (191099) build was added on 19 August 2026, so do not assume it remains the newest release.
- Kodi installations: keep Kodi and the Jellyfin add-on compatible. An update to one can change menus, synchronization behavior, or playback handling.
- Server upgrades: update the Jellyfin server separately from the television client and retest playback after major changes.
Troubleshooting common failures
The app cannot find the server
- Confirm the server address is reachable from the TV’s network, not only from a computer on a different network.
- Check that you entered the correct account and that the server allows that user to access the selected library.
- For remote access, verify the external address, firewall, and TLS or proxy configuration before changing clients.
Playback buffers or starts a transcode
- Look at the Jellyfin session details to identify the video, audio, container, or subtitle track that triggered conversion.
- Try another audio track or disable subtitles to isolate the cause.
- Compare the file with Jellyfin’s Android TV and Kodi codec matrix.
- If the format is unsupported, either use a client/device that can decode it or configure a server with enough transcoding capacity.
Kodi shows stale or missing artwork
With Jellyfin for Kodi, check whether the affected library was synchronized and whether the initial scan completed. With JellyCon or server-driven browsing, verify that the Jellyfin server itself has current metadata and that the add-on is connected to the intended account.
The remote cannot navigate an alternative client
Test directional focus, select, back, play/pause, subtitle, and audio-track controls on the actual television. If Findroid or another alternative does not provide dependable ten-foot navigation, return to Jellyfin for Android TV or use Kodi, both of which are explicitly documented for television-oriented platforms.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the exact device: Android TV, Google TV, Fire TV Stick, Nvidia Shield, or another TV box.
- Install Jellyfin for Android TV unless Kodi’s interface is a specific requirement.
- If choosing Kodi, decide between synchronized local metadata with Jellyfin for Kodi and lightweight server browsing with JellyCon.
- Use Findroid only after confirming remote-control behavior on your hardware.
- Compare your video, audio, container, and subtitle formats with Jellyfin’s codec-support matrix.
- Test representative files and inspect the server’s playback mode before moving every household user to the new client.
Bottom line
Jellyfin for Android TV is the best general recommendation for Android TV, Google TV, Fire TV, and Nvidia Shield because it is the official, broadly distributed television client. Jellyfin for Kodi is the better fit for a Kodi-centered setup, with JellyCon available when you want Kodi navigation without a synchronized local library. Findroid is a legitimate native Android alternative, but television remote support should be verified on the specific device. In every case, the codec matrix and a short playback test matter more than a client’s label when your goal is dependable direct play.
