Best James Bond Games to Play After GoldenEye 007

Start with 007 First Light if you want a current, cinematic Bond campaign. Return to GoldenEye 007 for the specific first-person shooting and multiplayer identity that made the 1997 classic a benchmark. For older-school alternatives, Nightfire is the closest fit for fast console shooting, while Everything or Nothing and Blood Stone are better choices when story and set pieces matter more than competitive play.

The short answer: which Bond game should you play next?

No single James Bond game reproduces every part of GoldenEye. The best follow-up depends on which part of Rare’s Nintendo 64 game you miss: a new Bond story, first-person gunplay, four-player competition, gadgets, or the feeling of playing a film-sized action adventure.

Game Best for Perspective and emphasis Modern-access reality
007 First Light A current Bond experience Third-person action and stealth with an original, cinematic origin story Released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC; Nintendo Switch 2 version is dated for March 18, 2027
GoldenEye 007 The original reference point Nintendo 64-era first-person shooting, mission objectives, cheats and four-player heritage Officially restored through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack
Nightfire Classic Brosnan-era shooting Fast first-person action, gadgets, vehicles and local multiplayer Primarily a legacy-hardware and used-game question
Everything or Nothing A film-like original adventure Third-person action, set pieces and a cinematic story Generally a legacy-console purchase
Blood Stone A later-generation Bond thriller Cinematic action with a more modern presentation than the N64-era games Older-console and PC availability, with resale status varying by region
007 Legends A collection of film-inspired missions Several Bond-film scenarios plus a history of multiplayer Legacy title with limited modern storefront access

If you want one recommendation rather than a list, choose 007 First Light for a new single-player campaign. Choose GoldenEye 007 when multiplayer or the exact N64 first-person formula is the priority. Choose Nightfire only if you are comfortable treating an older game as a legacy purchase rather than expecting a frictionless modern download.

Why GoldenEye 007 is still the comparison point

GoldenEye 007 is the 1997 Nintendo 64 shooter that established the template most players mean when they say they want “another GoldenEye.” Its appeal is not just the James Bond license. It combines first-person shooting with mission objectives, stealthy approaches, gadget use, cheat unlocks and a four-player mode that became a defining piece of console multiplayer history.

  • EARN THE NUMBER - Discover a new James Bond origin story, and the events that led a young maverick to become the best MI6 agent.
  • A THRILLING ESPIONAGE ADVENTURE - Embark on missions in breathtaking locations, drive iconic vehicles, and dive into a cinematic adventure in pursuit of a rogue agent who’s always one step ahead.
  • SPYING, YOUR WAY - Go silent or go loud. Whether fighting with fists or firepower, using gadgets to infiltrate, or bluffing your way past guards, the approach is entirely up to you.

The official modern route is Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. That version preserves the classic game while adding online play, so it is the simplest legal way for many players to revisit the original without locating a Nintendo 64 cartridge and hardware. It remains the benchmark for a particular combination: compact missions, readable objectives, instantly recognizable weapons and chaotic competitive matches.

That distinction matters when selecting a successor. A newer game can look better and tell a more elaborate story without being a closer match for GoldenEye’s multiplayer or first-person feel. Conversely, an older Bond game can feel more similar in pace while being much harder to buy and play today.

007 First Light is the best current Bond recommendation

What it is

IO Interactive describes 007 First Light as a reimagined origin story about a young James Bond earning his place in MI6’s elite training program. It is designed as a new Bond narrative rather than a remake of a film or a continuation of GoldenEye’s specific plot. That makes it the strongest choice for readers who want an officially current adventure instead of a historical curiosity.

The game emphasizes modern presentation, third-person action, stealth and a cinematic, story-led campaign. Those choices make it a successor in spirit rather than in mechanics. You get the fantasy of being Bond in a contemporary production, but you should not expect the N64 game’s first-person controls or its competitive mode.

Platforms and dates

Platform Availability stated by the publisher What that means
PlayStation 5 Global launch on May 27, 2026 A current-generation console option
Xbox Series X|S Global launch on May 27, 2026 Available on Microsoft’s current console generation
PC Global launch on May 27, 2026 The current computer version
Nintendo Switch 2 Confirmed for March 18, 2027 Not the same as immediate availability on the original Switch

As of October 18, 2026, the Switch 2 release is still a future-dated option. The confirmation does not establish a version for the original Nintendo Switch, so do not assume that a standard Switch can run First Light.

Who should choose First Light

  • Newcomers to Bond games: You get an original starting point instead of having to know a film timeline or an older console’s controls.
  • Players who want a story campaign: The game is built around a cinematic single-player experience.
  • Current-console and PC owners: It is the only recommendation in this list presented as a current 2026 release across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
  • Players who value stealth and third-person action: Its design is different from GoldenEye’s first-person shooting but still supports the spy-thriller fantasy.

Who should not choose it as a GoldenEye replacement

IO Interactive’s FAQ explicitly says that First Light does not include a multiplayer experience. If your main memory of GoldenEye is four people competing on one screen or online opponents recreating that kind of match, First Light cannot fill that role. It also does not preserve the N64 game’s first-person viewpoint; its action is presented from a third-person perspective.

The game has nevertheless shown strong market traction: IO Interactive reported four million units sold within its first three months in 2026. That figure indicates substantial adoption, but it does not change the more important buying distinction: First Light is a single-player Bond campaign, not a multiplayer shooter.

If multiplayer is the priority

Stay with GoldenEye for the exact identity

For Bond-themed competitive play, GoldenEye remains the safest answer because its four-player heritage is part of what made the game important. The Switch Online + Expansion Pack release also supplies online play, making it more practical than the original cartridge-era setup for many households.

Choose it when you want short matches, familiar arenas, weapon experimentation and the deliberately old-fashioned rhythm of an N64 shooter. Its age is part of the experience: movement, aiming and visual presentation are not modernized into a contemporary military shooter.

Try Nightfire for legacy local multiplayer

Nightfire is the strongest alternative for readers who want a classic console shooter with Bond gadgets, vehicles and local multiplayer. It belongs to the Brosnan-era style of Bond game and is faster and more overtly action-focused than a purely stealth-oriented interpretation of the character.

The trade-off is access. Treat Nightfire as a legacy-hardware and used-market purchase. The available evidence does not establish a universal modern storefront version, so platform, region, disc condition and compatible hardware all matter. Confirm those details before buying rather than assuming that a listing for an old copy guarantees a simple plug-and-play experience.

Why First Light is not the multiplayer answer

First Light may be the best current Bond campaign, but the publisher’s stated design decision is unambiguous: there is no multiplayer experience. Do not buy it expecting GoldenEye-style matches, cooperative missions or a competitive mode that can be added later through a routine update.

The best single-player alternatives to GoldenEye

Everything or Nothing: choose it for cinematic third-person action

Everything or Nothing is aimed at players who want an original Bond adventure that feels closer to an interactive film than to a pure arena shooter. Its strengths are third-person action, set pieces and a film-like story. That makes it a natural bridge between GoldenEye’s mission-based structure and the more cinematic direction later Bond games took.

It is not the choice for someone specifically asking for a modern first-person shooter. Its present-day reality is also less convenient: it is generally a legacy-console purchase, so availability depends on finding compatible hardware and a legitimate copy in your region.

  • Fight worthy adversaries - Advanced AI systems allow enemies to react to you in intelligent and tactical ways. Think quickly, because they'll seek cover and outflank you
  • The new world of Bond - Using the likenesses and voices of actors from both films including Daniel Craig and Judi Dench, the game immerses you in the story of how Bond becomes the ultimate 00 agent. Each mission will take you through the exotic locations such as Casino Royale in Madagascar, the deserts of Bolivia and the streets of Austria
  • Become the world's premier MI6 agent - Bond gets online with standard 12-player multiplayer mode plus unique Bond modes such as Bond VS which pits you against other opponents in an intense race to complete objectives, and Golden Gun mode, which lets you perform one hit kills using the coveted Golden Gun

Blood Stone: choose it for a later-generation thriller

Blood Stone offers cinematic action with a later-generation presentation than the N64-era games. It suits players who want a Bond thriller that feels more modern than GoldenEye while remaining separate from First Light’s new origin-story approach.

Access requires more checking than a current release. Older-console and PC availability, along with resale status, can vary by region. Check the exact platform and edition before paying, especially when a marketplace listing uses a broad title without showing the system version.

007 Legends: choose it for a film-mission compilation

007 Legends gathers multiple Bond-film scenarios in one package and has a history of multiplayer. It is useful when you want variety across film-inspired missions rather than one continuous original story.

The compromise is modern availability. It is a legacy title with limited contemporary storefront access, and the existence of multiplayer history does not guarantee that its online services or matchmaking are active today. Consider it primarily as a retrospective collection and verify the condition of any used copy before treating it as a multiplayer purchase.

First-person versus third-person: the decision that matters most

Perspective is a better predictor of whether a game will satisfy your GoldenEye expectations than release year alone.

If you want… Start with… Why
N64-style first-person shooting GoldenEye 007 It is the original reference point and remains available through Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
Fast classic shooter action with gadgets and vehicles Nightfire It carries the Brosnan-era console-shooter identity and local multiplayer heritage.
A current cinematic Bond story 007 First Light It is a new origin story with modern presentation, stealth and third-person action.
Film-like set pieces in an older Bond adventure Everything or Nothing Its emphasis is third-person action and a cinematic story.
A later-generation thriller Blood Stone It provides a more modern presentation while remaining a legacy title.

Do not interpret “modern” as “closest.” First Light is the newest and most accessible campaign recommendation, while GoldenEye is still the closest match for the specific N64-FPS-and-multiplayer formula.

Platform guide: PS5, Xbox, PC, Switch and legacy hardware

PlayStation 5

PlayStation 5 owners have the clearest current path: 007 First Light launched globally on May 27, 2026. Pick it when you want a new single-player Bond story and do not require multiplayer.

Xbox Series X|S

Xbox Series X|S is also a launch platform for First Light. The same perspective and multiplayer caveats apply: it is third-person, cinematic and single-player rather than a GoldenEye-style competitive FPS.

PC

PC players can choose First Light as the current release, while older games require more attention to edition, operating-system compatibility and legitimate availability. A PC listing for a legacy title should not be assumed to be interchangeable with a current digital release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nintendo Switch

For the original GoldenEye experience, Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is the relevant service route. First Light is not established here as an original-Switch release, so do not confuse the existing GoldenEye service with a First Light port.

Nintendo Switch 2

IO Interactive confirmed a First Light version for March 18, 2027. Because that date is after the current October 2026 publication context, readers should treat it as a scheduled release rather than an already available option.

Older consoles and used copies

Nightfire, Everything or Nothing, Blood Stone and 007 Legends all require a more careful approach. Their practical availability can depend on the exact legacy platform, region and second-hand market. Before purchasing, verify:

  • The listing names the correct console or PC edition.
  • The disc or cartridge is complete enough for the required hardware.
  • The seller’s region matches your console’s compatibility requirements.
  • Any advertised multiplayer feature is local, online, or merely historical.
  • You are buying a legitimate copy rather than a reproduction or an unlicensed download.

How to choose in five steps

  1. Decide whether you need multiplayer. If yes, start with GoldenEye 007. Consider Nightfire only if legacy hardware and local multiplayer are acceptable.
  2. Choose your viewpoint. Select GoldenEye or Nightfire for first-person shooting; select First Light, Everything or Nothing or Blood Stone for third-person cinematic action.
  3. Check your hardware. First Light is current on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. GoldenEye’s straightforward modern route is Switch Online + Expansion Pack. The other recommendations require legacy-platform checking.
  4. Decide whether you want a new story or film references. First Light is an original Bond origin story. Everything or Nothing, Blood Stone and 007 Legends draw on the older Bond-game tradition, with 007 Legends specifically presenting multiple film-inspired scenarios.
  5. Verify access before paying. For legacy games, confirm the exact edition, region, condition and multiplayer expectations. For First Light, confirm that your platform is one of the announced launch systems or wait for the Switch 2 date.

Common mistakes when buying a post-GoldenEye Bond game

Expecting every Bond game to be an FPS

GoldenEye’s first-person design is influential, but the recommended newer campaign, First Light, uses third-person action and stealth. Buy according to the perspective you want, not simply the presence of the 007 name.

Assuming a story game includes multiplayer

First Light is explicitly single-player. A cinematic campaign and a competitive shooter are different products, even when both use Bond’s gadgets and espionage setting.

  • WELCOME TO MI6 - Test your skills and replay your favorite missions with additional modifiers, for endless espionage fun!

Assuming a legacy title is easy to obtain

Nightfire, Everything or Nothing, Blood Stone and 007 Legends may be excellent fits, but their modern access is not uniform. Availability can vary by platform and region, and a used copy may require hardware that is no longer common.

Confusing Switch generations

GoldenEye’s current Switch access comes through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. First Light’s confirmed Nintendo platform is Switch 2, with a March 18, 2027 date. Those are separate facts and should not be treated as evidence that First Light runs on the original Switch.

A sensible play order

If you still have access to GoldenEye through Switch Online + Expansion Pack, play a few original missions or matches first so you can identify what you actually want next. Then use this order:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  1. 007 First Light for a current, story-led Bond campaign.
  2. Nightfire for the closest classic-console follow-up when first-person action, gadgets, vehicles and local multiplayer matter.
  3. Everything or Nothing for a cinematic third-person adventure.
  4. Blood Stone for a later-generation thriller with older-platform caveats.
  5. 007 Legends when a film-mission compilation is more appealing than one continuous story.

That order is not a quality ranking of every historical Bond release. It separates the current recommendation from the legacy alternatives and keeps GoldenEye’s multiplayer role clear.

Final verdict

007 First Light is the best game to play after GoldenEye if your goal is a new, current James Bond campaign. It launched globally on May 27, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, presents a reimagined young-Bond origin story, and focuses on cinematic third-person action and stealth. It is not a multiplayer substitute.

GoldenEye 007 remains the answer for first-person N64-style shooting and multiplayer nostalgia, now with an official Switch Online + Expansion Pack route. Nightfire is the most useful legacy alternative for fast shooter action and local multiplayer, while Everything or Nothing, Blood Stone and 007 Legends serve different cinematic or film-compilation tastes. Choose by perspective, multiplayer needs and platform access, and the right follow-up becomes clear.
