Best iPhone Telephoto Lens Attachments for Photography: Compatibility, Reach and Real-World Trade-offs

Short answer: If you own a compatible Pro iPhone and need more reach than its built-in telephoto camera provides, the SANDMARC Telephoto 96mm is the strongest maximum-reach option listed here; the Telephoto 72mm is the lower-cost, lighter alternative. Neither is a universal clip-on lens: both are designed around the phone’s tetraprism telephoto camera and are listed for specific Pro models. If you have an iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max, check the native camera first. Apple already specifies a 200mm (8× optical-quality) telephoto and a 16× optical-quality range, so an attachment may add less practical value than it would on an older or less capable phone.

The key decision is not simply “which lens has the biggest number?” It is whether your exact iPhone, case or mount, camera app, subject distance and ability to keep the phone steady justify the extra optical path. Manufacturer magnification figures are not the same thing as a standalone-camera focal length, and the available evidence does not establish that an attachment will outperform native zoom in every phone, scene or lighting condition.

Start with your iPhone model and native telephoto camera

Telephoto attachments in this category must line up with a particular camera on the phone. The two SANDMARC tetraprism products discussed below list compatibility with iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, and iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. They are not listed as universal accessories for every iPhone 15, 16 or 17 model.

That model check matters because Apple’s built-in reach varies considerably:

#1 Best Overall
MIAO LAB 28X HD Telephoto Lens for iPhone/Samsung/Android, High Power Telephoto Camera Lens with Universal Clip Compatibility Most Smartphone - 28X
  • Get Closer To Everyday Distant Moments: Bring distant sports events, birds, boats and travel landmarks closer when your phone camera cannot reach. The 28X optical telephoto lens is designed for stable outdoor subjects approximately 49–262 ft / 15–80 m away, making everyday long-distance observation and smartphone photography more accessible.
  • Wider, More Natural Telephoto View: Compared with many higher-power phone telescopes, the 28X design provides a wider field of view and makes distant subjects easier to find and frame. It is a practical choice for beginners who prefer a more natural telephoto view instead of an extremely narrow image.
  • Smaller Edge Darkening—Phone Models May Vary: Designed to reduce edge darkening on many smartphones. Because camera position and sensor size vary, some newer multi-camera phones may still show slight dark edges at 1X. Center the lens over the main camera and apply a small amount of phone zoom when needed.
  • Manual Focus For Clearer Distant Detail: Rotate the focus ring slowly until your subject appears sharp. At 28X magnification, even small hand movements become visible, so brace your arms or use a tripod for clearer photos and video. For moving subjects, set your position and focus before the moment begins.Tripod is recommended and sold separately.
  • Universal Clip For Popular Smartphones: Works with many iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel and Android main cameras. Remove thick phone cases, identify the main 1X camera, center the lens carefully and disable automatic macro or lens switching when possible. The aluminum body also works as a compact handheld monocular for travel and outdoor observation.
Phone configuration Native camera information What it means for an add-on
iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max Apple lists a 100mm (4×) telephoto, a 200mm (8× optical-quality) telephoto, a 16× optical-quality zoom range and up to 40× digital zoom. Apple’s technical specifications describe these as phone capabilities, not independent test results. These phones already cover substantial telephoto distances. An attachment is most defensible when you need tighter framing, a particular working distance or the manufacturer’s extra magnification and accept the added setup.
Standard iPhone 17 Apple specifies a 48MP main camera that also provides a 12MP optical-quality 2× view at 52mm. Apple’s iPhone 17 specifications do not make it equivalent to the Pro telephoto system. Do not assume a lens designed for the Pro tetraprism camera will fit or work optically on this model.
iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max The SANDMARC product pages list these models as compatible with their 72mm and 96mm tetraprism attachments. Compatibility is model-specific and depends on aligning the add-on with the phone’s dedicated telephoto camera, rather than simply covering the main camera.

Apple’s focal-length labels describe the phone’s own camera system. An add-on that claims “3×” or “4×” is multiplying the view produced by the built-in telephoto camera in the manufacturer’s stated configuration; it is not automatically a 3× or 4× standalone-camera lens.

The two model-specific attachments compared

Attachment Manufacturer-stated fit and magnification Published reach claims Weight and included equipment Price shown when checked
SANDMARC Telephoto 96mm Mounts directly to the tetraprism telephoto camera; listed for iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro/Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max; claims 4× true optical magnification. Up to 32× total zoom on iPhone 17 Pro models; up to 20× on iPhone 16 Pro models and iPhone 15 Pro Max. These are SANDMARC claims, not independent equivalence tests. The product flow identifies compatible iPhone case configurations. Confirm the current case and bundle contents on the listing. $345 on the product page when checked; price can change. Product page
SANDMARC Telephoto 72mm Claims 3× optical magnification added to the built-in telephoto system; listed for iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro/Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max. Up to 24× on iPhone 17 Pro models; up to 15× on iPhone 16 Pro models and iPhone 15 Pro Max. These are SANDMARC claims. 181g; 72mm focal-length label; multi-element, multi-coated glass; box listing includes the lens, filter mount and clip-on mount. The page says the free SANDMARC Camera App is required. $295 on the product page when checked; price can change. Product page

Best for maximum reach: Telephoto 96mm

The 96mm is the choice for a photographer who prioritizes the tightest framing available from these two listed products. SANDMARC describes it as a direct attachment to the tetraprism camera with 4× true optical magnification. Its published total-zoom figures change by phone model: up to 32× on iPhone 17 Pro models and up to 20× on iPhone 16 Pro models and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Those totals should be read as a particular phone-plus-attachment configuration, not as the focal length of a separate interchangeable lens. They also do not prove that every frame at the maximum setting will be sharp, well-lit or free of vignetting. The practical benefit is a narrower field of view for distant details, wildlife that cannot be approached, stage subjects and compressed city scenes, provided you can maintain alignment and stability.

Best value and simpler starting point: Telephoto 72mm

The 72mm trades some reach for a lower listed price and a more moderate 3× add-on claim. SANDMARC lists up to 24× total zoom on iPhone 17 Pro models and up to 15× on iPhone 16 Pro models and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The published specification gives a 181g weight and multi-element, multi-coated glass.

The box listing is unusually useful for planning a system: it includes the lens, a filter mount and a clip-on mount, while the page says the free SANDMARC Camera App is required. That combination may suit photographers who want to experiment with telephoto framing, filters or a clip-based setup without paying the 96mm price. It still requires careful alignment with the phone’s telephoto camera.

How the attachment numbers relate to native zoom

There are three different numbers that are easy to confuse:

  • Focal-length labels: “72mm” and “96mm” are product labels describing the optical design in the manufacturer’s system. They should not be treated as a direct promise of the same perspective, depth of field or image quality as a 72mm or 96mm lens on a full-frame camera.
  • Added magnification: SANDMARC describes the 72mm as adding 3× and the 96mm as adding 4× to the built-in tetraprism telephoto camera.
  • Total zoom: The up-to-24×, 32×, 15× and 20× figures combine the attachment with a specified iPhone model and its camera software. They are not standalone lens focal lengths.

On an iPhone 17 Pro, the native 200mm 8× optical-quality option is already a major reach advantage. An add-on can still make the framing tighter, but the gain should be judged against the extra weight, alignment work and possible need for a tripod. On the standard iPhone 17, the native system is different, and the listed Pro-only compatibility means you should not infer that either attachment will work.

What is known about image quality

The manufacturer pages make optical-performance statements, including multi-element, multi-coated glass for the 72mm, but those statements are not a guarantee of identical results across every phone and scene. An attachment introduces additional glass, another alignment surface and a narrower angle of view. Small errors that are invisible at a wide setting become obvious when the subject fills only a small part of the frame.

Tom’s Guide’s 2026 roundup names a SANDMARC 58mm telephoto as its best iPhone telephoto lens and reports its own observations about sharpness and chromatic aberration. Those are that outlet’s editorial test findings, not a universal result for the 72mm or 96mm products. The available evidence does not establish current iPhone 17 compatibility for that 58mm model, so it should not be treated as a model-specific recommendation without checking the current listing. See Tom’s Guide’s 2026 roundup.

An older Tom’s Guide telephoto shootout compared several attachment systems and reported comparative image observations, but its age makes it unsuitable for current compatibility, stock or ranking claims. Use it as historical context about how mounting mechanisms and optical rendering can differ, not as a present buying guide: historical telephoto shootout.

Just drape the lanyard and lens around your neck. The quick-release lanyard head makes it a cinch to access your Xenvo lenses in a flash so you never miss another photo moment.

When you evaluate your own results, inspect the center and corners at 100-percent view. Look for loss of fine detail, purple or green color fringes at high-contrast edges, darkened corners, reduced contrast against backlight and flare from bright sources. Compare the same subject at the phone’s native telephoto setting and with the attachment, using the same shutter speed, focus target and lighting. That comparison is more meaningful than assuming a larger zoom number must produce a better file.

Stability, alignment and handling

Longer effective reach narrows the field of view, so a tiny hand movement moves the framing substantially. SANDMARC support material advises that a tripod is essential at the extreme magnifications it describes. Treat that as manufacturer guidance, but the underlying handling issue applies broadly: the tighter the view, the more useful a tripod, monopod, grip or solid surface becomes. Read the support information at SANDMARC’s Help Center.

The 72mm’s published 181g weight is only the lens. Add the phone, case, clip or filter mount and the camera becomes front-heavy. A direct-mount system can be more rigid, but it also makes precise alignment with the tetraprism camera critical. A clip-on system is convenient when moving between phones or cases, yet any tilt or lateral shift can soften one side of the frame.

Support documentation also discusses a 2× lens and the possibility that third-party camera apps may be needed to select a particular built-in camera. That is a separate product category from the 72mm and 96mm tetraprism attachments. Check the exact compatibility instructions for the lens you buy at SANDMARC’s lens-compatibility guide, rather than assuming that an app or mount for one lens applies to another.

Choose by subject and shooting style

Your priority Most sensible direction Why
Maximum distance from a listed Pro iPhone 96mm, if your phone and mount are explicitly supported It carries the higher manufacturer-stated 4× add-on magnification and higher total-zoom claims.
Lower purchase price and a more moderate step up 72mm The listed price was $295 versus $345 for the 96mm, and the product includes a filter mount and clip-on mount; verify current contents.
iPhone 17 Pro wildlife, sports or stage work First test the native 200mm 8× optical-quality camera You may already have enough reach without extra glass, weight or alignment work.
Portraits and city details at moderate distance 72mm or native telephoto, depending on your phone A less extreme angle can be easier to frame and hold steady than the longest setup.
Spontaneous travel photography Native camera, unless the attachment is already mounted Changing mounts, opening an app and stabilizing a long setup can cost more time than the extra reach saves.
Tripod-based, carefully composed distant subjects 96mm The narrower view is easier to exploit when you can lock down the phone and fine-tune alignment.

Setup procedure before you make important photographs

  1. Confirm the exact model. Match the phone name and camera layout to the manufacturer’s compatibility list. The listed Pro models are not interchangeable with every iPhone in the same numbered generation.
  2. Identify the tetraprism telephoto camera. The 72mm and 96mm are intended to align with that dedicated camera, not the main camera or an arbitrary lens opening.
  3. Prepare the case or mount. Remove a case that blocks the mount unless the product flow specifically lists it as compatible. For the 72mm, check that the supplied clip-on or filter mount is seated squarely.
  4. Install the required camera software. The 72mm listing says the free SANDMARC Camera App is required. Give the app permission to use the camera and confirm that it is selecting the intended telephoto camera.
  5. Mount without pressure on the phone. Attach the lens straight, then look at the live preview for a dark crescent, clipped corners or uneven sharpness. Those signs usually indicate an offset or obstructed optical path.
  6. Stabilize the setup. Use a tripod or firm support for distant subjects and the highest magnification. Handholding can work at shorter settings, but expect framing movement and more motion blur as reach increases.
  7. Set focus and exposure deliberately. Place the focus point on the subject’s important detail, avoid bright sources at the edge of the frame and make a test image before a one-time event.
  8. Compare native and attached frames. Photograph the same subject with the phone’s native telephoto and with the attachment. Check detail, color fringing, corners and contrast at the intended output size.

Troubleshooting common failures

The image is black or heavily vignetted

Check that the attachment is centered over the telephoto camera rather than the main camera. Remove a case or filter ring that intrudes into the opening, and inspect the live preview while gently realigning the mount. If the problem appears only at one zoom setting, the app may have switched to a different built-in camera.

One side is soft while the center looks acceptable

Uneven softness often points to a tilted or laterally shifted mount. Detach and reseat it on a level phone surface, then repeat the comparison at the same focus distance. Do not compensate by sharpening heavily; that can hide the alignment problem while exaggerating halos.

The subject jumps out of frame

That is normal at long effective reach. Start at a wider native setting, locate the subject, then move to the attachment. A tripod head or grip that allows small adjustments is more controllable than trying to reframe by tapping and panning while handholding.

The photograph is sharp in daylight but muddy indoors

Extra glass does not create more light. In dim scenes the phone may lengthen the shutter speed or raise gain, making motion blur and noise more visible. Add support, use available light, or switch back to the native camera if it produces a cleaner file.

The app does not show the expected camera

Confirm that the app has camera permission and that your phone model is supported. Some third-party camera apps may be required to select a particular built-in camera for certain lens designs, as described in SANDMARC’s compatibility material. Do not assume instructions for a 2× or 6× product apply to the 72mm or 96mm.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cost, mounts and ecosystem requirements

The prices surfaced on the product pages were $345 for the 96mm and $295 for the 72mm. These are point-in-time listings, not guaranteed prices; check the current product pages before ordering. The real cost can also include a compatible case, replacement mount, tripod support or filters.

The 72mm listing explicitly says the free SANDMARC Camera App is required and lists a lens, filter mount and clip-on mount in the box. The 96mm product flow identifies compatible iPhone case configurations, but package contents and case availability should be confirmed on the live listing. A lens that is optically suitable but incompatible with your existing case may require an additional purchase.

Verdict

Choose the Telephoto 96mm when you have one of the listed Pro iPhones, can use the required direct tetraprism alignment and regularly photograph distant subjects from a tripod-supported setup. Choose the Telephoto 72mm when you want a less expensive, more moderate reach increase and value the listed clip-on and filter hardware. If you own an iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max, make the native 200mm 8× camera your baseline: an add-on is an optional framing tool, not an automatic image-quality upgrade.
