Its US App Store listing describes importing community designs or starting from scratch, then arranging text, photos, symbols, shapes and charts with adjustable colors, fonts, gradients and layouts. Widgetsmith is the better-documented choice for a wallpaper-led look: its developer describes clear or frosted treatments and image backgrounds. Apple’s own Home Screen controls still determine which widget sizes are available, so check size support before designing an entire page. These are feature-based fits, not a universal ranking or a hands-on performance test.
Quick verdict: which app fits your layout goal?
Choose the app according to the kind of control you need rather than searching for a single “best” widget app.

- Choose Widgy for detailed composition. The listing describes a layer editor, community widgets, and creation from scratch. You can combine text, photos, symbols, shapes and charts, then tune colors, fonts, gradients and positioning. That makes it the clearest match for a deliberately composed dashboard or a screen that must follow a precise visual grid.
- Choose Widgetsmith for a wallpaper-coordinated style. A developer announcement for version 8.2 describes clear or frosted widget styling and the ability to use an image as a widget background. That is useful when the widget should blend into a photograph or wallpaper instead of looking like a separate card.
- Use Apple’s controls as the compatibility check. iOS lets you change app and widget appearance, including size and tint or appearance, and lets you resize widgets from the Home Screen. Apple warns: “Not all apps offer every widget size.”
Neither source establishes a complete, current feature inventory, comparative reliability, battery behavior, refresh speed, or ease-of-use score. App Store descriptions and software features can change, and some capabilities vary by device and operating system.
What “custom layouts” means on an iPhone
Native iOS layout controls
Before installing anything, decide whether Apple’s built-in controls already solve the problem. On a Home Screen, iOS can change the appearance of apps and widgets, apply available tint or appearance choices, and offer different widget sizes. The exact choices are supplied by each app; a small, medium or large footprint is not guaranteed for every widget.

To place or resize a widget, touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen until the icons enter edit mode, tap the edit control, choose the widget-add option, select an app, and swipe through the sizes that app exposes. Add the size that fits your grid, then drag it into position. Labels can differ slightly between iOS releases, but the important check is the size picker: if the required footprint is not offered there, a third-party editor cannot make iOS create that missing system size.
What a third-party editor adds
Third-party apps generally affect the content and visual treatment inside an Apple widget slot. They do not remove iOS’s placement rules or make every size available. The practical distinction is whether you are choosing from a fixed set of presets, importing a design made by someone else, or composing the widget yourself from layers and styling controls.

Widgy: the detailed composition option
Why it suits precise layouts
Widgy’s US App Store description presents two useful starting points. You can import a community design, which is the fastest route to a finished look, or build a widget from scratch. The editor is described as layer-based, with text, photos, symbols, shapes and charts available as separate elements. Colors, fonts, gradients and layout can be adjusted, so the app is aimed at people who want to control relationships between individual objects rather than merely select a theme.
A layer workflow is valuable when a widget needs a specific hierarchy: for example, a large number in one corner, a small label beneath it, a photo strip behind the content, and a chart aligned to a fixed edge. It also makes iteration possible. You can change one element’s color or position without replacing the entire widget design.
Community designs versus starting from zero
Community widgets reduce the blank-canvas problem. Import one when you already know the style you want or need a quick reference for spacing and typography. Starting from scratch is more appropriate when a design must match your wallpaper, personal color system or information priorities. Treat community work as a starting point, not a guarantee that it uses the size, data source or visual density you need.
Surfaces and device variation
The listing describes support for Home Screen, Lock Screen and Apple Watch widgets. It also notes that some features vary by device and operating system. Confirm support on the specific iPhone and iOS release you use before investing time in a multi-surface system. A design that works on one surface may not expose the same controls or available dimensions on another.

Cost and complexity trade-offs
Widgy is listed as free with optional in-app purchases. The listing says purchases can unlock additional widget slots and features. That means “free” does not necessarily mean that every slot or advanced capability is available without payment. Check the current slot allowance and the exact feature attached to each purchase inside the App Store listing or the app before planning a page that requires many separate widgets.
The same depth that makes Widgy attractive can increase setup effort. A layer editor offers more decisions than a preset picker: alignment, font selection, contrast, spacing and the number of elements all become your responsibility. If you only want a translucent block behind a photo, a full composition workflow may be more control than you need.
How to interpret the “like Photoshop” comment
One App Store reviewer described Widgy as “like photoshop for widgets.” That is an individual user’s analogy, not an objective measurement or a representative usability finding. It does communicate the intended level of control: think in terms of layers and composition rather than a single switch for a theme.
Widgetsmith: the wallpaper-led option
What the developer explicitly documents
In a post pointing to version 8.2, Widgetsmith’s developer describes clear or frosted widget styling and the option to use an image as a widget background. These features address a specific design goal: making the widget feel integrated with the wallpaper, whether that means showing the image through a clear treatment, adding a frosted surface, or using a photograph as the widget’s background.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When that approach works best
Use a wallpaper-led treatment when the visual anchor is a photograph, illustration or carefully arranged background and the widget should support it rather than compete with it. A frosted surface can create separation for text while preserving the sense that the wallpaper continues underneath; a clear treatment can make the widget recede when the image itself carries the design.
What is not established by the announcement
The cited developer post is a feature announcement, not a complete catalogue of Widgetsmith layouts, widget sizes, supported surfaces, current pricing or usability. Do not assume that every size or data type is available because a particular background treatment is documented. Open the current App Store listing and the widget picker on your iPhone to verify the exact options you will use.
Choose by priority, not by app name
If you want a dashboard assembled from many elements
Start with Widgy. Its documented layer editor and component list are directly aligned with a dashboard in which text, imagery, symbols, shapes and charts occupy deliberate positions. Import a community design if you want a head start; build from scratch if the arrangement itself is the point.

If the wallpaper is the main visual asset
Start with Widgetsmith’s documented clear, frosted and image-background treatments. The key question is not whether it has the deepest possible editor; it is whether the available treatment preserves the relationship between the widget and your chosen background.

If a particular widget size is non-negotiable
Check iOS first, then check the app. Apple’s size warning applies to every third-party choice: not all apps offer every widget size. In the Home Screen widget picker, confirm that the app exposes the footprint you need before designing around it. If it does not, revise the grid rather than assuming a later setting will unlock it.
If you want the least setup
Prefer a community design or a documented style that is close to your goal. A from-scratch layer composition is powerful but asks you to make more visual decisions. The right trade-off depends on whether your priority is speed or exact control; the available sources do not provide a measured setup-time comparison.
Step-by-step: build a custom Home Screen without redoing it
1. Inventory the page before installing an editor
Sketch the page as a set of rectangles. Mark which spaces need a single widget, which need a wide or tall widget, and which can remain app icons. Write down the information each rectangle must show. This prevents choosing an editor for visual effects that do not solve your actual size or information requirements.
2. Verify the native size choices
Open the iPhone’s widget picker and inspect the target app’s offered sizes. Apple’s guide makes clear that size availability is app-dependent. Record the largest and smallest choices you can actually add on your device; use those real options as the grid for the rest of the design.

Choose Widgy when you need independently positioned layers, community imports, or a composition built from text, photos, symbols, shapes and charts. Choose Widgetsmith when the defining requirement is a clear, frosted or image-backed look. If neither model matches, keep the native iOS widget and avoid adding an editor merely for decoration.
4. Create or import one pilot widget
Do not build an entire page immediately. Make one widget at the size you confirmed in step 2. In Widgy, either import a community design or create a small layer stack from scratch. In Widgetsmith, test the image and surface treatment against the wallpaper you actually use. The pilot exposes contrast, cropping and spacing problems before they are repeated across the page.

5. Add it to the Home Screen
Touch and hold an empty Home Screen area, enter edit mode, choose the add-widget control, find the app, select the size, and place the widget. If the app offers several saved designs, select the one you prepared. Drag it into the rectangle from your inventory and leave edit mode to inspect it at normal scale.
6. Check legibility and hierarchy
- Make the primary value or label visually dominant.
- Keep secondary labels smaller, but not so small that the widget becomes decoration.
- Check text against both the widget surface and the wallpaper behind it.
- Remove layers that do not answer a question or establish useful structure.
- Compare the result in the actual Home Screen context, not only inside the editor.
7. Expand only after the pilot works
Once one widget has the right size, contrast and density, repeat the system for the remaining rectangles. Keep a consistent type scale and color logic. If a second widget requires a different size that the app does not offer, change the page plan rather than forcing an unrelated footprint into the grid.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLayout patterns that the documented features support
Layered information card
Use Widgy’s layer model for a compact card with a large text value, a smaller caption, a symbol, and a simple chart. Keep the chart subordinate to the value and use a restrained gradient or shape as a background layer. This pattern uses the components specifically named in the listing without assuming a particular data provider or refresh behavior.
Photo-backed panel
Use Widgetsmith’s documented image-background option when a photograph should occupy the widget itself. Select an image with a calm area where text can sit, then test whether the clear or frosted treatment gives enough separation. If the image is busy behind the text, the frosted treatment may be the more practical starting point; the final choice depends on the image and the current controls exposed by the app.
Community-led starting page
Import a Widgy community design for one prominent slot, then adjust its colors, fonts or layout to match the rest of the page. This avoids starting from a blank canvas while preserving the ability to edit the composition. Verify that the imported design uses a size available on your iPhone before rearranging other widgets around it.
Minimal native-plus-custom page
Keep Apple’s built-in widgets for information that already fits your needs and add one custom widget only where composition or background treatment matters. This reduces the number of paid slots you may need and limits the amount of visual maintenance. It also respects iOS’s size constraints instead of treating a third-party app as a replacement for the system grid.
Size, device and operating-system checks
| Check | What is established | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|
| Widget footprint | Apple says available sizes depend on the app and that not all apps offer every size. | The exact small, medium, large or other choices shown by the app on your iPhone. |
| Home Screen appearance | iOS provides appearance, tint and sizing controls for apps and widgets. | Which controls your iOS release exposes and how they interact with the selected widget. |
| Widgy surfaces | The listing describes Home Screen, Lock Screen and Apple Watch support. | Whether the specific design and feature set work on your device and operating-system version. |
| Widgetsmith coverage | The developer documents clear, frosted and image-background treatments in a version 8.2 announcement. | Current widget sizes, surfaces, templates and requirements in the live App Store listing. |
Because both operating-system behavior and App Store listings can change, treat the picker and the current listing as the final compatibility authority for your setup.

Costs, slots and purchase boundaries
There is no physical accessory requirement for either choice; these are software decisions.
| App or control | Documented cost information | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Widgy | Listed as free with optional in-app purchases. | Additional widget slots and features may require payment. Confirm the number of included slots and the exact unlock before designing a page that depends on many widgets. |
| Widgetsmith | Current price and paid-feature boundaries are not stated in the cited material. | Check the live App Store listing and the in-app purchase screen before treating a feature as included. |
| iOS Home Screen controls | Part of the operating system; no separate app purchase is identified here. | Use them first to validate size and appearance requirements. |
Prices, slot allowances and feature gates are changeable software details. Record the date you checked them if you are documenting a setup for someone else.
Common problems and practical fixes
The size you need is missing
Return to the widget picker and verify the app’s offered sizes. Apple’s “Not all apps offer every widget size” warning is the governing limitation. Rework the grid, choose a different app whose picker exposes the required footprint, or keep that space for icons instead of trying to force an unavailable size.
A design looks different on another device
Widgy’s listing notes that some features vary by device and operating system, and iOS itself controls size availability. Recheck the target device’s picker and the app’s current compatibility notes. Do not assume that an imported design or a Lock Screen feature will behave identically across hardware or OS versions.
The widget blends into the wallpaper too much
For a Widgetsmith image-backed design, compare the clear and frosted treatments and move text onto a calmer part of the image if the controls allow it. For a Widgy composition, increase contrast through the documented color, font, gradient or shape controls. The goal is readable hierarchy, not maximum transparency.
You run out of Widgy slots
Check which slots are included and which require an optional purchase. Consolidate information into fewer widgets, remove experiments from the Home Screen, or decide whether the paid slot unlock is worthwhile before buying. The listing confirms that additional slots or features may be paid; it does not establish a universal slot count.
The editor feels excessive for the job
Use a community design, a simpler documented treatment, or Apple’s native widgets. A layer editor is valuable when precise composition is the requirement; it is unnecessary if you only need a standard size and an ordinary information block.

The current app does not match an older description
App Store details and software features change. Treat the live listing and the widget picker as more authoritative than an old screenshot or a remembered setup. The Widgetsmith announcement specifically points to version 8.2, so confirm what remains available in the current release.
A repeatable decision checklist
- Have you written down the exact widget footprints your page requires?
- Does the iPhone’s picker show those sizes for the app you are considering?
- Do you need independent layers, or only a background treatment?
- Would a Widgy community design save time, or do you need to build from scratch?
- Is the defining visual requirement a clear, frosted or image-backed Widgetsmith treatment?
- Will Home Screen, Lock Screen or Apple Watch support matter on your devices?
- Have you checked device and iOS variation before importing a design?
- For Widgy, have you confirmed slot limits and which features are paid?
- For Widgetsmith, have you checked current pricing and feature availability in the live listing?
- Have you tested one pilot widget for contrast and density before rebuilding the whole page?
Bottom line
For the most detailed custom compositions supported by the cited descriptions, start with Widgy: its layer editor, community imports and from-scratch workflow directly address precise placement and multi-element designs. For a screen organized around a photograph or wallpaper, start with Widgetsmith’s documented clear, frosted and image-background treatments. In either case, let the iPhone’s actual widget picker decide whether the required sizes are available, and verify current device, operating-system and purchase details before committing to a full layout.
