Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor most people, the best iPad for SketchUp is an M4 iPad Air: the 13-inch if you want more drawing space, the 11-inch if you want portability. An iPad Pro is the premium pick when screen area or top-tier hardware matters most. This is a recommendation based on official compatibility and SketchUp’s own guidance, not on benchmarks. SketchUp doesn’t publish model-by-model performance results, and neither this article nor its sources include independent speed tests.
Check these four things before you buy
- iPadOS 18.0 or later. SketchUp’s help center states: “SketchUp for iPad requires your iPad to have at least iPadOS 18.0+ installed.” (SketchUp, iPad System Requirements, updated 2026-09-29).
- The exact iPad generation. SketchUp works with a wide range of iPad Pro, iPad, iPad Air and iPad mini models, so the question is mostly which one fits your work.
- The matching Apple Pencil. Pencil generations are not interchangeable across all iPads.
- LiDAR, only if you need Scan-to-Design. That feature requires an iPad with LiDAR. Ordinary sketching and modeling do not.
Also budget for a SketchUp subscription, which model creation and editing require. SketchUp’s iPad page advertises a free seven-day trial or access with a paid subscription. Its Getting Started guide says you can buy monthly or annual plans through the App Store or SketchUp.com. Prices vary by country and change, so check the current plan page, such as SketchUp Go, before you commit.

How much iPad power does SketchUp need?
SketchUp’s guidance: “For optimal performance, especially if working with large, demanding files, we recommend using the most powerful iPad you can get your hands on.” That is the vendor’s recommendation, not a comparison. In practice, the more complex your models are (large site plans, heavy component libraries, detailed textures), the more it makes sense to move up the range. For small to medium models and concept work, a mid-range iPad is a sensible starting point.

The current iPads compared for SketchUp
Apple’s comparison page lists these as the current models at the time of writing: iPad Pro 11-inch and 13-inch (M5), iPad Air 11-inch and 13-inch (M4), iPad (A16), and iPad mini (A17 Pro). Lineups change, so confirm on Apple’s page before ordering. Prices aren’t listed here because they vary by region and storage.

| Model | Best suited to | Caveat |
|---|---|---|
| iPad Air 13-inch (M4) | Larger touch workspace for regular modeling and markup; my main recommendation | No independent benchmark against other iPads exists in the sources. |
| iPad Air 11-inch (M4) | Portability with the same current Air-family chip | Smaller canvas; check Pencil compatibility for this exact model. |
| iPad Pro 13-inch (M5) | The largest current Pro workspace and top-tier hardware | A measured SketchUp speed advantage over the Air is not established. |
| iPad Pro 11-inch (M5) | Pro hardware in a more portable size | Same as above. |
| iPad (A16) | A budget-conscious option to consider | SketchUp doesn’t isolate its performance on complex files. Test with a trial against your typical file size. |
| iPad mini (A17 Pro) | Field markup and maximum portability | An 8.3-inch screen is a real workspace tradeoff for detailed modeling, though it is not an incompatibility. |
Screen size versus portability
Modeling involves lots of precise tapping, pinching and orbiting, and a bigger screen leaves more room for the toolbar and the model at once. That is the main reason to choose the 13-inch Air or Pro. If you mostly sketch on site or review models on the go, the 11-inch is easier to carry.
Which Apple Pencil works with your iPad?
SketchUp says the iPad app was developed with Apple Pencil (2nd generation), but it also supports Apple Pencil (1st generation) and other iPadOS-compatible third-party styluses. Apple’s compatibility guide is the authority for pairing:

- Apple Pencil (USB-C): broader compatibility across current and some recent iPads.
- First- or second-generation Pencil: what older iPads may need.
Look up your exact model in Apple’s guide before buying a Pencil, especially on the second-hand market.
Do you need an Apple Pencil at all?
No. SketchUp for iPad supports Apple Pencil, multi-touch, mouse and keyboard. Features such as Just Draw, AutoShape (which also works with touch), Markup, photo textures, AR viewing, 3D Warehouse and Live Components are described on the product page. The Pencil is most useful for precise drawing and markup. If you mainly model with touch, you can start without one.

Optional accessories
SketchUp lists the Magic Keyboard with trackpad, a Bluetooth three-button mouse with scroll wheel, and multi-touch as input choices. These suit people who work at a desk and want shortcuts and precise cursor control. They are conveniences rather than prerequisites.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need LiDAR?
Only for Scan-to-Design, which SketchUp says requires a LiDAR-equipped iPad. If you never plan to scan spaces, don’t pay extra for it. If you do, check Apple’s specifications for your exact model, because LiDAR is not on every iPad.
