Use your home carrier’s roaming plan when your destination is included or you want the convenience of keeping your home line available. A portable Wi-Fi hotspot is often more practical when several people or devices need to connect. The right choice depends on your exact route, phone, data needs, and plan terms.
Which travel internet option fits your trip?
| Option | Best fit | Check before choosing | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home-carrier roaming or travel pass | Travelers who want convenience, their home number available, or already have destination coverage in their plan | Included countries, daily or monthly charges, data caps, speed reductions, calls and texts, and automatic activation rules | Price and terms depend on your carrier, plan, and destination; international service may not be included. |
| Local SIM | Longer stays or travelers who want a destination carrier’s service, especially if they need a local number | Unlocked phone, supported SIM size and bands, local ID or registration rules, activation, and included data and calls | Replacing a physical SIM can displace your home SIM, and buying or registering one may take time. |
| Prepaid travel eSIM | Data-first trips with an unlocked, compatible eSIM phone | Device eligibility, destination coverage, data allowance, validity, activation timing, tethering permission, and voice or SMS inclusion | Many plans are data-only, and offers vary by provider and destination. |
| Hotel or public Wi-Fi | Messaging, downloads, and light use that can wait until a trusted connection is available | Where access is available and whether the network is trustworthy | Availability varies, and public Wi-Fi may not be secure. |
| Portable Wi-Fi hotspot (pocket Wi-Fi or MiFi) | Families, groups, or travelers connecting several devices at once | Device cost, unlock status, supported bands and SIM or eSIM, coverage, service plan, battery, and hotspot data allowance | You need a separate service plan and must carry and charge another device. |
| Airplane or cruise connectivity | A particular flight or ship segment | Whether the carrier or ship offers service, its price, and which apps or services work | Service can be limited and is separate from ordinary destination connectivity. |
Some options work together. For example, a compatible dual-line phone can keep a home line for calls or texts while using a travel eSIM for data. That setup does not automatically prevent charges on the home line.

How to choose for your itinerary
Start with trip length, data use, and devices
- For a short, data-first trip, compare the cost and coverage of a travel eSIM with your carrier’s roaming terms.
- For a longer stay or a need for a local number, look into local SIMs and their registration requirements.
- For several people or devices, compare the cost of a hotspot and its service plan with the alternatives each traveler can use individually.
- If you need reliable access throughout the day, do not make hotel or public Wi-Fi your only connection.
Check the full route, not just the destination name
Confirm that your plan covers every country and region on your itinerary, including stopovers. Check data limits, validity period, calls and texts, speed reductions after an allowance, and whether tethering is permitted. Plan terms and coverage can vary by country and provider.
Check your phone before buying a SIM or eSIM
Confirm that the phone is unlocked and compatible
Apple says an iPhone must be unlocked to use another carrier’s travel eSIM. On iPhone, check Settings > General > About; “No SIM Restrictions” indicates the phone is unlocked. Compatibility is device-specific, so confirm that your model supports eSIM and the relevant network bands before purchase. Apple’s international eSIM guidance explains that prepaid plans differ in data allowance, duration, and covered countries or regions. Local providers may offer prepaid or postpaid service and may require identification under local rules.

Understand what happens to your home line
With both a home line and travel eSIM enabled, you may use the travel eSIM for data while the home line remains available. Apple warns that roaming fees from the home eSIM may still apply. Check your carrier’s terms and line settings before departure; selecting a travel data line alone is not a guarantee that the home line will incur no charges.
Check activation timing and purchase location
Activation rules are specific to each offer. For example, AT&T’s May 18, 2026 announcement described a U.S. visitor eSIM that requires a compatible, unlocked 5G dual-SIM phone and an international phone number. T-Mobile’s U.S. Pass page says the plan must be purchased and activated in the United States. These are provider-specific examples, not general eSIM rules; verify current availability and eligibility with the provider.

When a portable hotspot makes sense
A portable hotspot—also called pocket Wi-Fi or MiFi—is a battery-powered device that provides a Wi-Fi connection for nearby phones, tablets, or laptops. The Government of Canada describes a MiFi as able to serve up to five Wi-Fi-enabled devices; that figure is not a universal limit for every model. A hotspot can simplify connectivity for a group, but the device alone does not provide internet: it also needs compatible service, coverage, and an adequate data allowance. Check battery life and whether the plan allows the amount of hotspot use you expect.

Use Wi-Fi carefully and prepare a fallback
Hotel and public Wi-Fi can reduce cellular data use, and some calling or messaging apps work over Wi-Fi without a data plan. The U.S. Department of State cautions that public Wi-Fi may be insecure and could put personal information at risk. Use judgment about what you access on unfamiliar networks, and do not depend on finding Wi-Fi whenever you need it. The Department of State’s guidance for communicating abroad also recommends checking carrier options and preparing before travel.
- Download offline maps and important travel information before departure.
- Save emergency contacts and the local emergency number where you can access them offline.
- Check roaming charges and monitor data usage; the Government of Canada notes that Wi-Fi can be enabled manually while a device is in airplane mode.
- Update devices and apps, and bring the charger and power adapter you need.
- Expect limited connectivity on some flights and cruises; confirm what the carrier or ship actually provides.
For destination-specific rules and options, check your carrier and local providers before leaving. The Government of Canada’s guidance on using data plans outside Canada is written for Canadians traveling abroad, so its advice should not be treated as a substitute for the terms that apply to your own carrier and destination.
