There is no single best indoor air quality monitor for every home. Choose one based on the pollutants you want to track: Airthings View Plus is a broad-coverage option that lists radon, PM2.5, CO2, VOCs, humidity, temperature and pressure; Aranet4 HOME is focused on CO2 and related ventilation trends. Neither is a substitute for dedicated smoke or carbon-monoxide alarms, and consumer sensor readings are useful signals—not guaranteed reference-grade measurements.
How to choose a home air quality monitor
Start with the question you need the device to answer. A monitor measures its listed targets, not “air quality” as a single, all-encompassing quantity. The EPA notes that low-cost devices detect particular pollutants or environmental factors, and the sensors included vary by product: EPA guidance on low-cost monitors and indoor air quality.

- Want broad pollutant coverage? Check whether the device lists each target you care about, such as radon, fine particles (PM2.5), carbon dioxide (CO2) or volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
- Want to understand ventilation patterns? A CO2-focused monitor may be sufficient; a larger sensor suite is not automatically more useful for that job.
- Need smoke or carbon-monoxide warnings? Buy and maintain dedicated alarms. A general-purpose air quality monitor is not a replacement.
Compare the actual measurements, sensor methods, sampling and calibration information, and how the device displays or logs readings. A monitor designed for one target cannot stand in for a device that measures another.

Which indoor air quality monitors cover the most useful targets?
| Use case | Example | Manufacturer-listed measurements | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broad household pollutant tracking | Airthings View Plus | Radon, PM2.5, CO2, VOCs, humidity, temperature and pressure | Its sensor methods and technical specifications vary by pollutant. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative test results. It is not a smoke or CO alarm. |
| CO2 and ventilation trends | Aranet4 HOME | CO2, temperature, relative humidity and atmospheric pressure | Its published measurement list does not include PM2.5, VOCs or radon. |
| Reducing particles after identifying a concern | Portable air cleaner or suitable HVAC filter | Filtration equipment, not a monitor | Filtration can reduce indoor pollution, but does not remove every pollutant. |
Airthings lists the View Plus measurements on its View Plus product page. Its technical specifications describe an NDIR CO2 sensor, an optical PM2.5 particle counter calibrated against a GRIMM reference instrument, and alpha spectrometry for radon. The same page gives pollutant-specific ranges, accuracy and sampling details: Airthings View specifications, dated April 13, 2026. Treat those figures as the maker’s specifications, not proof of equivalent performance in every home or an independent head-to-head result.

- Know your air – An Alexa air quality monitor that makes it easy to understand what’s in your indoor air.
- Track and measure – Our indoor air quality monitor keeps tabs on 5 key factors: particulate matter (PM 2.5), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide (CO), humidity, and temperature.
- Stay informed – Get an indication of current indoor air quality from the color-coded LED, and detailed information and an easy-to-understand air quality score in the Alexa app.
- Real-time alerts - Get notifications on your phone or announcements on Echo devices when Alexa detects poor indoor air quality.
- Automate climate control - Enable Routines to turn on or off your compatible Alexa devices, such as air purifiers, dehumidifiers, and fans, when the indoor air quality sensors detect changes.
Aranet describes the HOME model’s measurement scope and NDIR method in its Aranet4 measurement guide; its Aranet4 product page provides further product details. If radon or particles are part of your concern, its CO2-focused measurement list does not cover those targets.
What do the View Plus specifications tell you?
The View Plus technical page lists a CO2 measurement range of 400–5,000 ppm. For PM2.5, it specifies an error of ±10 μg/m³ from 0 to 100 μg/m³ and ±10% from 100 to 200 μg/m³. It lists radon precision of about 10% for a seven-day average after a settling period, improving after two months. These are the manufacturer’s stated specifications; they are not independent test results or a promise of identical accuracy in every setting.

A monitor’s number or overall score does not necessarily reflect every contaminant in a room. For example, CO2 can help you follow ventilation-related trends, but a CO2 monitor does not thereby measure particles, VOCs or radon. Look at repeated patterns, the device’s specified targets and conditions, and the situation in the home before deciding what action to take.

Use recurring readings as a prompt to look for a possible source or ventilation issue. Depending on what you are tracking, possible responses include removing or reducing a source, increasing ventilation, or using supplemental filtration. The EPA describes these as potential actions informed by monitor readings while emphasizing the limitations of the data: EPA guidance on monitors and indoor air quality.

Do air quality monitors replace smoke or carbon-monoxide alarms?
No. Keep appropriate, dedicated smoke alarms and carbon-monoxide alarms installed and maintained in the home. Airthings’ View Plus guidance also treats those alarms as separate warning devices: Airthings View Plus product guidance.
