Repeat after a restart
Close the app while still in Airplane Mode and open it again. This catches cases where a game works only because an online launch left a temporary session, token or cached page in memory. The test still cannot guarantee behavior after a future update, but it gives you a current, device-specific answer.

“Indie” and “offline” are separate claims. An independently made game may require a server, account or streaming connection. Conversely, an offline game may come from a large publisher and not meet a reader’s definition of indie. The two labels must be verified independently for every recommendation.
Apple’s reviewed indie collection and its reviewed offline collection each contain many titles, but the documented intersection contains only Vampire Survivors. That is why this article does not fill space with games that merely look suitable from their genre, store description or reputation. Without evidence for both criteria, adding another title would turn a useful travel recommendation into a guess.
What about Vampire Crawlers?
Apple’s October 12, 2026 Indie Games Week announcement identifies Vampire Crawlers as a Vampire Survivors spin-off and describes it as a tactical gothic card battler. That announcement establishes the relationship and genre description, but it does not establish that Vampire Crawlers works offline.
It therefore does not qualify for the confirmed list here. A spin-off relationship is not proof of identical technical behavior: two games can use different engines, account systems, update requirements or online features. Treat Vampire Crawlers as a separate title and check a current regional listing plus an airplane-mode test before depending on it for travel.

Regional and time-sensitive details to verify
The cited App Store collections and the Vampire Survivors listing are US storefront pages. Apple can change collection membership, prices, ratings, supported devices and availability by country or region. A title visible in the US editorial page may be unavailable elsewhere, and an app’s requirements may change after an update.

An update is requested while you are offline

A menu or reward does not load
Identify whether the failed element is an optional online service or the central game session. Leave network-dependent menus alone until connectivity returns. Repeat installation and first launch on the second iPhone or iPad. Device compatibility and account state can differ even when both devices are listed as supported platforms. Test each device independently before relying on it.
How Apple’s indie label fits the recommendation
Apple’s October 12, 2026 announcement presents Indie Games Week as a celebration of games made by independent developers. Carson Oliver, Apple’s head of App Store Worldwide, said: “Indie games are constantly pushing the boundaries of creativity to deliver unique gameplay experiences to Apple users, and we wanted to take a moment to celebrate these games and the teams that take creative risks to push gaming forward.”
That statement explains the editorial purpose of the collection, but collection placement remains the evidence used here. It is not a universal legal or business definition of “indie,” and it does not automatically establish offline operation for every featured game.
Keeping this recommendation current
Collection pages are live editorial lists, not permanent catalogs. Recheck the local App Store listing before a major trip, especially after an operating-system release or a substantial app update. Confirm three things again: the app is available for your device and region, it launches after installation, and a normal session starts with both Wi-Fi and mobile data disabled.
