Best IDrive Alternatives in 2026: Which Cloud Backup Fits Your Devices?

Backblaze Computer Backup is the clearest IDrive alternative when you mainly need unlimited backup for one computer. It is not a universal replacement: households with several devices, NAS owners, and businesses protecting servers or SaaS data need to compare device coverage, storage rules, retention, and restore methods. pCloud can add drive-like storage and sharing, Carbonite Safe emphasizes simple backup with a plan-specific unlimited option, and Microsoft OneDrive is better understood as cloud storage and file sync than full-machine backup.

The short answer: choose by workload, not by the storage headline

IDrive’s appeal is breadth. Its product scope includes computers, phones, NAS devices, and SaaS data, so an alternative must be judged against the devices and data sources you actually need to protect. A service that is excellent for one Windows or Mac computer may be a poor fit for a home with multiple machines or a company running servers.

  • One computer with a large disk: investigate Backblaze Computer Backup first, especially if unlimited per-computer storage is your priority.
  • Simple household file protection plus cloud access: compare pCloud or Carbonite Safe, but verify device limits, exclusions, and recovery controls.
  • Servers, NAS, or business applications: do not assume a consumer alternative covers them. Check whether the product has a separate business service and whether that service protects your specific systems.
  • Windows files and photos already organized in Microsoft 365: OneDrive may be convenient, but it does not provide drive imaging or disaster recovery according to TechRadar Pro’s comparison.
  • Strong resilience: pair cloud backup with a local external-drive copy using the 3-2-1 approach.

Prices, storage allowances, operating-system support, external-drive rules, and retention options change by country, billing term, promotion, and plan. Treat every figure below as dated guidance and confirm the current checkout and feature list before subscribing.

How the main alternatives differ

Service Best-fit workload Storage or backup model Restore and retention points Important qualification
Backblaze Computer Backup One computer where generous or unlimited backup is the main goal Unlimited-storage positioning for workstation backup; TechRadar Pro reported a starting figure of $9 per month in 2026 Backblaze’s pricing page describes web restores up to 500GB per request, mailed hard-drive restores, optional private-key encryption, and optional forever version retention for an added fee Confirm the current price, included drives, external-drive eligibility, retention cost, and operating-system rules
pCloud People who want online backup alongside drive-like access, sharing, and synchronization Cloudwards lists pCloud as offering online backup; the inspected material does not establish a like-for-like replacement for IDrive’s device and business scope Backup scope, version controls, and recovery workflow require plan-level verification Do not treat a storage-and-sync account as full-device backup without checking what it captures
Carbonite Safe Users seeking a straightforward backup service Cloudwards reports an unlimited plan, but “unlimited” is plan-specific Current version history, deleted-file retention, restore media, and recovery limits were not stated in the inspected material Verify device count, file exclusions, external-drive coverage, and renewal price
Internxt, Proton Drive, and CrashPlan Potential alternatives worth separate evaluation They appear on Cloudwards’ 2026 IDrive-alternatives list Not stated in the material used here There is not enough plan-specific evidence to rank them responsibly in this comparison
Microsoft OneDrive File and photo protection integrated with Windows and Microsoft 365 Cloud storage and synchronization rather than a complete computer-backup service TechRadar Pro characterizes it as lacking drive imaging and disaster recovery Suitable for selected files, not a like-for-like replacement when you need full-machine recovery

Backblaze: the leading one-computer alternative

Backblaze is the most natural candidate when the requirement is “protect one computer without worrying about a small storage cap.” Cloudwards describes it as an unlimited-storage alternative, and TechRadar Pro reported a $9-per-month starting price for workstation backup in 2026. That is an editorial figure, not a guaranteed current checkout price; billing term, region, taxes, promotions, and renewal pricing can change the total.

#1 Best Overall
Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400) | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

What the plan is designed to do

Backblaze’s Computer Backup product is aimed at workstation data rather than a broad, IDrive-style portfolio of computers, phones, NAS devices, and SaaS accounts. Before choosing it, list every source you expect to protect. A single desktop or laptop is a different decision from a family of computers, a NAS full of media, or a business server.

Restore options that matter

The official pricing information describes web restores of up to 500GB per request. It also describes mailed hard-drive restores, which can be valuable when downloading hundreds of gigabytes would take too long. These are product limits and options, not independent performance measurements. Ask how the mailed-drive process works in your country and whether a refundable deposit or shipping charge applies.

Version history and encryption

Backblaze describes optional forever version retention for an added fee and an optional private-key encryption mode. A private key can improve confidentiality, but it also creates a recovery responsibility: losing the key can make encrypted backups inaccessible. Decide who will hold the key and how it will be recovered before enabling the option.

Business server and NAS coverage

TechRadar Pro reported Backblaze B2 business backup at $6 per terabyte per month in 2026. That is a dated editorial figure for a separate business-oriented service, not the price of Computer Backup and not a promise that every NAS or server workflow is included. Confirm supported platforms, API or application integration, minimum charges, egress fees, and retention before treating B2 as an IDrive Business substitute.

pCloud: useful when storage and backup overlap

Cloudwards includes pCloud among services with online backup. It may suit someone who wants a drive-like cloud workspace, sharing, and access from multiple devices in addition to backup features. That combination is different from a dedicated whole-computer backup workflow.

Rank #2
Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black
  • Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Questions to answer before subscribing

  • Does the plan back up the entire computer or only selected folders?
  • Which operating systems and external drives are supported?
  • How many historical versions are retained, and for how long?
  • How are deleted files recovered after accidental deletion or ransomware?
  • Can you download or otherwise recover a large dataset efficiently?

The inspected comparison does not establish that pCloud duplicates IDrive’s multi-device, NAS, phone, or SaaS coverage. Treat those capabilities as unconfirmed until the current plan documentation answers them.

Carbonite Safe: simple backup with plan-specific “unlimited” storage

Cloudwards presents Carbonite Safe as a simple IDrive alternative and reports an unlimited plan. The word “unlimited” needs a qualifier: it describes a particular plan, not every Carbonite product or every type of data. Device count, file exclusions, external-drive rules, and current pricing must be checked at sign-up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should consider it

Carbonite Safe is worth evaluating if you want a conventional backup product with minimal configuration and do not need the broadest possible set of sources. It becomes less obvious when you need several computers under one account, NAS protection, server workloads, or detailed business administration.

What remains to verify

The available comparison does not state current version-history length, deleted-file retention, restore-media options, or recovery limits. Those details determine whether “simple” also means recoverable after a long-undetected deletion or ransomware event. Request or locate the current plan documentation before moving irreplaceable data.

Why Microsoft OneDrive is not a full IDrive replacement

OneDrive integrates tightly with Windows and Microsoft 365 and is convenient for synchronizing documents and photos. TechRadar Pro characterizes it as cloud storage rather than full backup: it does not provide drive imaging or disaster recovery. If a laptop fails, a synchronized folder can restore the files inside that folder, but it does not recreate the operating system, applications, settings, or every local file outside the sync selection.

Rank #3
Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black
  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Use OneDrive when your goal is selected-file access, collaboration, and photo protection. Choose a real backup product when you need a recoverable copy of the whole computer or a documented disaster-recovery path.

Match the service to your situation

You have one Windows or Mac computer

  1. Measure the data you actually need to protect, including external volumes.
  2. Check whether the service covers that operating system and those volumes.
  3. Compare unlimited-per-computer pricing with capped storage plans.
  4. Confirm version retention and how a complete restore would work.

Backblaze is the first candidate to investigate for this profile because of its unlimited-storage positioning. Do not choose solely on that label: an inexpensive plan is not useful if it excludes the drive containing your important files or retains too few versions.

You have several household computers

Count devices before comparing storage. An unlimited plan for one computer can cost more than a capped multi-device plan, or it may require separate subscriptions. Check whether phones and tablets are included or need a different app, and whether each computer receives independent version history.

You rely on a NAS or external drives

Storage capacity is only the first question. Confirm that the exact NAS operating system, share type, and external-drive format are supported. Some products treat attached drives differently from internal disks, and a drive that is disconnected during a backup may not be protected. Ask how often the service rescans it and what happens when a drive is replaced.

You run a business or server

Separate workstation backup from server and application backup. You may need administrator roles, audit logs, application-aware recovery, retention policies, and a service-level commitment. Backblaze B2 is a business-oriented option mentioned by TechRadar Pro, but its reported $6-per-terabyte monthly figure is dated and does not establish coverage for your particular server or SaaS platform.

Backup versus sync: the test that prevents a costly mistake

A sync folder mirrors selected files between devices. A backup system is designed to preserve recoverable versions and support restoration after hardware failure, accidental deletion, malware, or loss of the original device. Some products offer both, which makes labels confusing.

Use this five-question test for any candidate:

  1. Scope: Can it capture the full device, or only folders you select?
  2. Versioning: Can you recover an earlier version from before corruption or encryption?
  3. Deletion handling: How long do deleted files remain recoverable?
  4. Recovery: Can you restore individual files and the whole computer?
  5. Independence: Does deleting a local file immediately remove the only cloud copy?

If the service fails the scope or recovery questions, treat it as storage or synchronization rather than a complete IDrive substitute.

A practical evaluation procedure

Run this checklist before paying for a replacement. It turns marketing terms into a decision you can document.

  1. Inventory data sources. Write down computers, phones, NAS devices, external disks, servers, and SaaS accounts. Mark which items are essential and which are replaceable.
  2. Record capacity and growth. Note used space today and expected annual growth. Include large media libraries, virtual machines, databases, and mail archives.
  3. Map the restore you would need. For a lost laptop, do you need a bootable image, or only documents and photos? For a server, do you need application-consistent recovery?
  4. Check plan boundaries. Read the current plan page for device count, storage caps, excluded file types, external-drive rules, operating-system support, and geographic availability.
  5. Check retention and security. Record version-history duration, deleted-file retention, encryption choices, two-factor authentication, and administrator controls.
  6. Calculate the real price. Separate monthly, annual, and two-year billing; introductory discounts; renewal rates; restore-media charges; and business-use add-ons.
  7. Run a restore test. Back up a representative folder, delete or rename a test copy, and restore it to another location. Measure whether the recovered files open correctly and whether timestamps and permissions matter to your workflow.
  8. Document account recovery. Store recovery codes and any private encryption key in a separate secure location. A backup that cannot be decrypted or accessed is not a usable backup.

Use the 3-2-1 rule with a local external drive

TechRadar’s backup guide describes the 3-2-1 approach: keep three copies of data on at least two different storage media, with at least one copy off-site. Cloud backup can provide the off-site copy; an external hard drive can provide a fast local copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Three copies: the working data, a local backup, and a cloud backup.
  • Two media types: for example, the computer’s internal storage and an external drive, with cloud storage as a separate system.
  • One off-site copy: the cloud copy protects against theft, fire, and local disasters that could destroy both the computer and the nearby drive.

A local drive is not universally suitable. Match its capacity to the data set, check the computer’s interface, consider portability and hardware encryption, and configure backup software that retains prior versions. Search for an “external hard drive for computer backup” when comparing models, but evaluate capacity, warranty, encryption, and compatibility rather than choosing by a generic listing.

Pricing and availability: how to read the numbers

The dated figures available for this comparison illustrate why price tables need context. TechRadar Pro reported $9 per month as a starting figure for Backblaze workstation backup and $6 per terabyte per month for Backblaze B2 business backup in 2026. Backblaze’s own pricing information describes monthly, one-year, and two-year billing, plus optional restore and retention features. These amounts and options can change, and the business figure is not interchangeable with the consumer plan.

For pCloud, Carbonite Safe, Internxt, Proton Drive, CrashPlan, and OneDrive, the material used here does not provide comparable current prices. Do not infer that a plan is cheaper because its storage number looks larger or because a free sync tier exists. Compare the recurring rate, device count, retention, restore method, and add-ons for the exact region and plan you will purchase.

Common failure modes and how to avoid them

“Unlimited” covers less than expected

An unlimited label may apply to one computer, one plan, or one class of files. Verify external-drive treatment, excluded paths, file-size limits, and whether additional computers require separate subscriptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The backup silently stops

Disconnected drives, expired credentials, full local caches, and excluded file types can leave gaps. Review backup reports, set alerts where available, and periodically compare the source inventory with the protected-data list.

Retention is too short

If ransomware or corruption goes unnoticed for weeks, a short version window may contain only damaged copies. Choose retention based on how quickly you detect problems, not merely on daily backup frequency.

Recovery is impractical

A large download may take longer than the business can tolerate. Confirm whether the provider offers mailed media, staged restores, or another high-volume recovery method. Backblaze’s stated 500GB web-restore limit per request is an example of a detail that should shape expectations.

Encryption prevents recovery

Private-key encryption can reduce provider access to your data, but losing the key can prevent restoration. Keep the key and account recovery information in a separate, controlled location and test access before an emergency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

For one computer and a preference for unlimited backup, start with Backblaze Computer Backup and verify its current price, drive eligibility, retention, and restore options. For a storage-and-sharing workflow that also offers online backup, investigate pCloud carefully. For a simpler backup product with a plan-specific unlimited option, evaluate Carbonite Safe while checking exclusions and device limits. Keep Microsoft OneDrive in the storage-and-sync category unless selected-file protection is all you need. If your workload includes several devices, NAS systems, servers, or SaaS data, compare those sources explicitly rather than assuming any single consumer plan matches IDrive’s breadth.
