The best iCloud+ alternative depends on what you are trying to change. Choose Proton Drive if end-to-end encryption is the priority; OneDrive if your household already uses Microsoft 365; Google One if Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos are your main ecosystem; and Dropbox Plus if you mainly want straightforward cross-device file sync and restoration. If Apple integration and device backup matter most, iCloud+ with Advanced Data Protection may still be the better answer than switching completely.

Do not compare these services on storage price alone. The important differences are who controls encryption keys, how account recovery works, whether storage is pooled for a household, how photos and backups move from an iPhone, and what collaboration tools your recipients use.

Quick decision: which iCloud+ alternative fits your reason for switching?

Your main reason Best fit to investigate first Why Main qualification
Strong privacy by default Proton Drive Proton advertises end-to-end and zero-access encryption, including on its free plan. Check recovery options, app coverage and collaboration features against your workflow.
You already pay for Microsoft 365 OneDrive Personal and Family plans combine storage with Microsoft productivity applications. The cited plan information does not establish end-to-end encryption by default.
Your life is in Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos Google One One pooled allowance covers all three services, and sharing supports up to five other people. Prices were not dependable in the available plan snapshot; assess privacy separately.
Simple standalone sync and file recovery Dropbox Plus A one-person 2 TB plan includes connected-device access and 30-day deleted-file restoration. Plus is not presented as end-to-end encrypted; that association appears with a team Advanced plan.
Apple-specific backup, Photos and privacy add-ons iCloud+ with Advanced Data Protection It remains integrated with Apple devices while protecting additional iCloud categories end to end. Mail, Contacts and Calendars remain exceptions, and recovery becomes your responsibility.

These are different kinds of choices, not a universal ranking. A privacy-led service can be less convenient for Apple-only functions; a productivity bundle can be cheaper in practice when you already pay for the included software; and a large storage allowance can disappear quickly when Gmail, photos and backups share it.

What “encrypted cloud storage” actually tells you

Cloud providers commonly encrypt data while it travels to their servers and while it is stored there. That protects against interception and many forms of unauthorized access, but it does not necessarily prevent the provider from technically decrypting your files. In that model, the provider controls or can access the keys.

#1 Best Overall
Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400) | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

End-to-end encryption (E2EE) changes the key relationship. Data is encrypted on your trusted device before upload and decrypted on a trusted device after download. The service is designed not to possess a usable key for the stored content. That can reduce exposure to provider-side access, but it also means the provider generally cannot unlock your files when you lose the credentials or recovery material.

Sharing creates another boundary. A shared link, a collaborator invitation or a web-based editor has to give someone else a way to decrypt or view the content. Look for password protection, expiry and revocation controls, and consider whether a recipient’s device or account can be trusted. E2EE protects the stored object; it cannot prevent a recipient from copying what they are allowed to open.

iCloud+ is not one privacy mode

Apple offers two materially different protection models. Under Standard Data Protection, iCloud Drive, Photos, Notes and iCloud Backup are encrypted in transit and on Apple’s servers, but Apple holds the keys. This is encryption, not end-to-end encryption for those categories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you enable Advanced Data Protection, those listed categories switch to end-to-end encryption. Keys are held by your trusted devices rather than Apple. Advanced Data Protection therefore makes iCloud’s privacy profile substantially stronger without requiring you to move your Apple library to another provider.

Advanced Data Protection is not universal across every iCloud service. Mail, Contacts and Calendars remain encrypted in transit and on Apple’s servers with Apple holding the keys. Apple also notes that feature availability can vary by region.

The recovery cost of Advanced Data Protection

Because Apple cannot recover protected keys, you must be able to recover your account through your device passcode or password, a designated recovery contact or a recovery key. Configure a recovery contact or recovery key before enabling Advanced Data Protection, store it somewhere you can reach during an emergency, and make sure trusted family members know the recovery plan when appropriate. Losing both your credentials and recovery method can make protected data permanently inaccessible; Apple says it cannot restore those keys for you.

Rank #2
Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black
  • Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

What iCloud+ includes beyond storage

Apple’s paid iCloud+ tiers include iCloud Private Relay, Hide My Email, custom email domains and family sharing with up to five other members. Higher tiers increase the number of HomeKit Secure Video cameras supported. Those benefits can be more important than raw gigabytes if your goal is to reduce tracking, create disposable email addresses or keep Apple services in one place.

Apple lists 50 GB, 200 GB, 2 TB, 6 TB and 12 TB tiers. US examples on the plan page are $0.99 per month for 50 GB, $2.99 per month for 200 GB and $9.99 per month for 2 TB. These are regional snapshots, not worldwide prices; prices, benefits and feature availability can differ by country and can change.

Proton Drive: the privacy-first alternative

Proton presents Drive as end-to-end encrypted and zero-access. Its advertised 5 GB free plan uses the same encryption level as its paid plans, so the privacy model is not reserved for subscribers. That makes it the clearest alternative for someone whose first question is, “Can the storage provider technically read my files?”

Where Proton Drive is a strong fit

  • You want E2EE as the default design rather than ordinary server-side encryption.
  • You want to test the service without paying first; the free allowance is 5 GB.
  • You need controlled sharing, including password, expiry and revocation settings for shared files.
  • You want collaborative documents through Proton’s Docs feature while keeping the same privacy-oriented account.

What to verify before moving an Apple library

Privacy of stored files is only one part of an Apple workflow. Confirm that the iPhone, iPad and Mac apps cover the folders you use, that automatic photo upload behaves as you expect, and that file-provider integration works with the apps that open your documents. Test offline access and large uploads before deleting any local originals.

Also examine recovery. E2EE and zero-access claims do not tell you how an account can be restored after a lost password, a new phone or a disabled authenticator. Make a recovery plan and test it with a noncritical folder. Proton’s privacy model is appealing, but it is not a blanket guarantee against compromised devices, weak passwords, unsafe sharing or accidental deletion.

Microsoft OneDrive and Microsoft 365: the bundle choice

OneDrive makes the most sense when storage is only one part of what you already buy. The US plan page lists Basic at $1.99 per month for 100 GB, Personal at $9.99 per month for 1 TB and Family at $12.99 per month for 2 TB shared among up to six people. Personal and Family include Microsoft productivity applications, and the listed support includes Mac, iPhone and iPad.

Rank #3
Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black
  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Household and work advantages

A Microsoft 365 household can consolidate a storage bill and an office-software bill. Family storage is shared across as many as six people, which can be useful when one person needs much more space than another. The cross-platform clients also make a mixed Mac, Windows, iPhone and iPad household easier to manage than a service tied to one operating system.

The privacy boundary

The cited plan information does not establish end-to-end encryption by default. Do not treat OneDrive as a privacy equivalent to Proton Drive or as a substitute for iCloud Advanced Data Protection. If you choose it for its bundle, use strong account security, review sharing permissions and reserve a genuinely end-to-end-encrypted service for files that require that key model.

Google One: the Google-ecosystem choice

Google One pools storage across Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. You can share the allowance with up to five other people, while each person’s content remains private to that person unless they deliberately share it. This is often the cleanest arrangement for an Apple owner who also relies heavily on Gmail, Google Photos or Google Drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why the pooled allowance matters

A single pool avoids buying separate capacity for mail attachments, documents and photo uploads. It also means those services compete for the same space. Before switching, inspect which category is consuming your current allowance; a large photo library can leave surprisingly little room for Drive files and Gmail.

Price and privacy checks

The available plan snapshot showed capacity tiers but did not provide dependable displayed prices, so verify the current price in your country rather than relying on a quoted US amount. The storage-sharing description establishes the privacy separation between family members, but it does not by itself establish an end-to-end-encryption model. Evaluate Google One on ecosystem convenience and your own privacy requirements separately.

Dropbox Plus: the standalone sync and restoration choice

Dropbox Plus lists 2 TB for one person at $9.99 per month. The plan includes access from connected devices, 30-day restoration for deleted files and transfers up to 50 GB. Dropbox Basic lists 2 GB, which is useful for a small trial but is unlikely to replace an iCloud library.

Rank #4
Seagate Portable 4TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0, 1-Year Rescue | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal

When Plus is practical

  • You want a straightforward file-sync service rather than a larger productivity ecosystem.
  • You regularly need to restore a file deleted within the previous 30 days.
  • You exchange large files and the stated 50 GB transfer limit covers your use case.
  • You need access from several computers and mobile devices without changing where your office files live.

Do not overstate its encryption

The plan comparison associates end-to-end encryption with team Advanced features, not with Plus. Treat Plus as a conventional encrypted cloud service unless the current plan documentation says otherwise. For confidential material, use client-side encryption or a separate E2EE service in addition to ordinary sync.

How to choose by real-world scenario

You want the strongest privacy without abandoning Apple devices

First consider iCloud+ Advanced Data Protection. It protects iCloud Drive, Photos, Notes and iCloud Backup end to end while keeping Apple’s native experience. If you also need privacy for data categories that remain Apple-keyed, or you want a separate provider for selected files, use Proton Drive for those files rather than assuming all of iCloud is covered.

You want to leave Apple’s storage ecosystem entirely

Map each workload separately: documents, photos, shared folders, device backup and email. Proton Drive, OneDrive, Google One and Dropbox can store and sync files, but none should be assumed to replace every Apple-specific feature. In particular, an alternative storage subscription does not automatically become the backup destination for an iPhone or iPad. Keep enough iCloud capacity for Apple-only data unless you have verified another backup method.

You are choosing for a family

Compare people, not just terabytes. iCloud+ shares with up to five other members; OneDrive Family supports up to six people total; Google One can share with up to five others while keeping each person’s content private. Dropbox Plus is a one-person plan, and Proton’s free allowance is only 5 GB. Clarify whether the group wants a pooled allowance, separate accounts, shared folders or all three.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You collaborate with people on different platforms

Check the recipient experience before migrating. Proton offers password, expiry and revocation controls for shared files and Docs collaboration. Dropbox Plus emphasizes device access and large transfers. OneDrive’s productivity bundle may be valuable to Microsoft Office users. Google One is convenient when collaborators already use Google Drive. Test a shared folder with a nonconfidential document, including editing, downloading and link revocation, before moving active projects.

How to switch without losing files or Apple features

  1. Inventory your data. Record the size of iCloud Drive, Photos, Notes and iCloud Backup separately. Identify shared folders, files that must remain available offline, and any Apple service that depends on iCloud.
  2. Choose the key and recovery model first. Decide whether provider-held keys are acceptable. If you choose iCloud Advanced Data Protection or an E2EE alternative, configure the recovery contact, recovery key or account-recovery method before uploading irreplaceable data.
  3. Create the destination account and enable security. Use a unique password and multifactor authentication. Install the official Mac, iPhone and iPad applications, then confirm that the account appears in the system file picker where you need it.
  4. Migrate documents in batches. Copy, rather than move, a small folder first. Compare file counts, folder names, file sizes and timestamps. Open representative documents on each device and test offline access before copying the rest.
  5. Handle photos as a separate project. Export originals from Apple Photos or use the destination app’s upload tool. Check that original resolution, dates, Live Photo components, albums and edits survive. Keep the source library untouched until you have opened random samples from several years.
  6. Review Apple backups. Confirm what still uses iCloud Backup and how much space it needs. An alternative file-sync service should not be treated as an automatic replacement for a complete iPhone or iPad backup.
  7. Rebuild sharing deliberately. Recreate shared folders and links, set the narrowest permissions, and apply passwords or expiry dates where available. Notify collaborators that old links may stop working only after the new links have been tested.
  8. Validate recovery and deletion. Sign in from a second trusted device, restore a test file, and verify that deleting a synchronized file behaves as expected. Pay particular attention to whether deletion propagates to every device.
  9. Cancel or reduce iCloud+ last. Keep the old plan until the new copies, photo metadata, Apple backups and shared projects have passed your checks. If you still need Apple-only services, retain the smallest iCloud tier that covers them.

Common failure modes and how to avoid them

Confusing sync with backup

Sync mirrors changes. If a file is deleted or corrupted and the change synchronizes, every connected device can reflect the problem. Use a provider’s version history or deleted-file restoration where available, and keep an independent copy of irreplaceable material.

Running out of pooled storage

Google One combines Gmail, Drive and Photos in one allowance; iCloud combines several Apple categories; a household plan can also allow one heavy user to consume most of the pool. Check usage before migration and set a periodic storage review.

Assuming family sharing means one shared folder

Family storage allocation and collaborative folders are different features. A member may receive capacity without seeing another member’s files. Create explicit shared folders and verify permissions rather than inferring them from the billing plan.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Locking yourself out of E2EE data

Stronger encryption removes the provider’s ability to rescue protected keys. Store recovery material offline, test it before the migration is complete and update it when trusted devices or family arrangements change.

Breaking photo organization

Moving image files does not guarantee that albums, edits, favorites, Live Photo components or dates will be reproduced. Preserve the original Apple library until sampled imports match what you need, and keep a second copy during the transition.

Deleting the source too soon

Cloud upload completion indicators are not the same as a verified copy. Compare counts and sizes, open files from the destination, and wait through at least one full device sync cycle before removing local or iCloud originals.

Ignoring regional differences

Prices, plan names, privacy features and availability can vary by country. The US amounts above are snapshots from October 2026 provider pages, not promises of what your account will be charged. Check the checkout screen and local terms immediately before subscribing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical recommendation

Start by deciding whether you need to replace Apple integration or only add a different privacy and storage layer. For Apple-first households, enable Advanced Data Protection after setting up recovery and keep iCloud for the functions that depend on it. For a privacy-first file vault, test Proton Drive with a small, noncritical library. For bundled productivity, compare the total value of OneDrive Personal or Family with what you already pay for office software. For Google-heavy households, measure Gmail, Drive and Photos together before choosing Google One. For an independent sync service with stated restoration and transfer limits, Dropbox Plus is the straightforward candidate, but it is not presented as end-to-end encrypted.
