Best HyperX Cloud III settings for clearer game audio and voice chat

For a wired HyperX Cloud III on Windows, the most important “setting” is correct device routing: select HyperX Cloud III as both the default playback and recording device, then select the same endpoints inside your game and voice-chat app. After routing is correct, use the headset’s volume wheel and mute indicator, and make only small, deliberate EQ changes. There is no manufacturer-published numeric EQ curve that can be called universally best for clarity.

This guide separates settings that affect game playback, settings that affect microphone capture, and controls that exist only in software. It also explains what carries between computers, which controls apply on consoles, how connection choices differ, and how to diagnose common “no sound” and “people cannot hear me” failures.

Recommended starting configuration

Start with a neutral, reliable configuration before changing tone. That gives you a known baseline and prevents an EQ problem from being mistaken for a routing problem.

Item Starting choice Why it matters
Windows playback device HyperX Cloud III Sends game and system audio to the headset.
Windows recording device HyperX Cloud III Sends the headset microphone to applications.
Game output device The intended HyperX Cloud III endpoint Some games use an app-specific device instead of the Windows default.
Voice-chat input and output The intended HyperX Cloud III endpoints Voice software can route independently from Windows.
Headset level Set with the physical volume wheel The wheel is an immediate hardware control for listening level.
EQ Neutral first; make small changes only after listening No official HyperX numeric clarity preset is established.

Set up the Cloud III on a Windows PC

1. Connect it using the included USB option

HyperX lists the Cloud III as compatible with PC and says the package includes a USB dongle and a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter. Connect the headset through the USB path appropriate for your computer. The product page also lists 3.5 mm, USB-C and USB-A connection options, along with compatibility for several consoles, Mac and mobile devices. See the Cloud III product page for the manufacturer’s current compatibility and accessory listing.

HyperX Cloud III – Wired Gaming Headset, PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Angled 53mm Drivers, Spatial Audio, Memory Foam, Durable Frame, Ultra-Clear 10mm Mic, USB-C, USB-A, 3.5mm – Black/Red
  • Comfort is King: Comfort’s in the Cloud III’s DNA. Built for gamers who can’t have an uncomfortable headset ruin the flow of their full-combo, disrupt their speedrun, or knocking them out of the zone.
  • Audio Tuned for Your Entertainment: Angled 53mm drivers have been tuned by HyperX audio engineers to provide the optimal listening experience that accents the dynamic sounds of gaming.
  • Upgraded Microphone for Clarity and Accuracy: Captures high-quality audio for clear voice chat and calls. The mic is noise-cancelling and features a built-in mesh filter to omit disruptive sounds and LED mic mute indicator lets you know when you’re muted.
  • Durability, for the Toughest of Battles: The headset is flexible and features an aluminum frame so it’s resilient against travel, accidents, mishaps, and your ‘level-headed’ reactions to losses and defeat screens.

2. Make it the Windows playback and recording device

Open Windows Sound settings and then open the Sound control panel. In the playback-device list, set HyperX Cloud III as the default playback device. In the recording-device list, set HyperX Cloud III as the default recording device. This is the Windows setup step documented by HyperX in its Cloud III PC setup instructions.

Do not assume that changing the Windows default automatically changes every application. Many games and chat clients retain their own output and microphone selections. If Windows shows more than one Cloud III-related endpoint, choose the one associated with the connection you are actually using rather than an old, disconnected entry.

3. Match the game’s audio selector

Open the game’s audio or voice settings and inspect its output-device selector. Choose the HyperX Cloud III endpoint if the game offers a device list. If it offers only a default-device choice, leave it on the system default you set above. Play a menu sound or a short test sequence before changing EQ; hearing nothing at this stage is a routing issue, not an EQ issue.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Match the voice-chat application

In the voice-chat software, check both directions separately:

  • Output: choose the Cloud III so other people’s voices reach the headset.
  • Input: choose the Cloud III microphone so your voice leaves the headset.

A common mistake is setting only the output device. You can hear the team while the application is still listening to a laptop microphone, webcam microphone or another connected device. Conversely, you can transmit correctly while chat is being sent to speakers or a monitor. Test each direction independently.

5. Check the physical controls

The Cloud III has a physical volume wheel and a microphone-mute indicator. HyperX explains that the microphone LED is lit when the microphone is muted and off when the microphone is active; the wheel adjusts headset level. Confirm the LED state and turn the wheel up gradually while a game or test sound is playing. The behavior is described in HyperX’s mic-mute and volume-wheel guide.

Choose the connection path deliberately

The Cloud III can be used through the included USB route or through the listed 3.5 mm, USB-C and USB-A connection options. Your choice affects which device controls are available. USB is the practical starting point on Windows because it exposes the named HyperX endpoint that you can select as playback and recording. An analog or platform-specific connection may instead be managed by the console, phone, Mac or other host. Do not assume that a setting made in Windows will follow the headset when you move to a different connection type.

Decision Best first check Limitation to remember
Windows PC over USB Select HyperX Cloud III for playback and recording, then match app selectors. NGENUITY settings remain software-side and are not stored on the wired headset.
Xbox Use the console’s supported chat and spatial-audio controls. The bundled DTS license and included USB adapter are not supported on Xbox.
PlayStation, Switch, Mac or mobile Select the headset or microphone where the platform exposes that choice. Official material does not establish identical software or spatial-audio behavior on every platform.

How to tune for clearer game audio

Begin without an aggressive bass boost

Clarity usually suffers when a large low-frequency boost masks footsteps, dialogue, reload sounds or other midrange information. Keep the first listening pass neutral. If the sound is already intelligible, you may not need an EQ change at all. A louder signal can seem clearer for a moment, so compare at a comfortable, similar volume rather than judging a boost only because it is louder.

Change one area at a time

There is no HyperX-confirmed “best” EQ curve for the Cloud III in the official material cited here. Treat numbers published elsewhere as personal starting points, not as a measured or manufacturer-approved solution. If dialogue remains hard to distinguish, make a small presence adjustment, listen to the same scene again, and stop when voices separate naturally from effects. Avoid stacking several large boosts because it becomes impossible to tell which change helped or introduced harshness.

Use repeatable listening checks

Choose a short section of a game that contains both speech and effects. Listen for three things:

  • Can you follow spoken words without raising the overall volume excessively?
  • Can you distinguish important cues from continuous low-end rumble?
  • Does the change make bright sounds tiring after several minutes?

Return to the previous setting if a change improves one cue but makes normal dialogue, music or long-session comfort worse. This is a listening method, not a claim that one curve works for every game, ear or hearing environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate game detail from chat balance

First establish that game audio and chat are both reaching the Cloud III. Then adjust the game’s master level or chat balance in the game or chat application if those controls exist. Do not use a global bass or treble change to compensate for a chat slider that is simply too quiet. If voices are being drowned out, lower competing effects or raise chat within the application before making broad EQ changes.

Keep listening level comfortable

Use the wheel for level changes rather than compensating for a tonal problem with extreme EQ. A moderate level makes it easier to judge whether speech is genuinely more intelligible and reduces the temptation to keep boosting treble or bass.

Configure playback and microphone controls in NGENUITY

What the software is for

HyperX lists the Cloud III among the devices supported by NGENUITY and describes microphone and playback settings in the application. Its current download page lists NGENUITY as Windows-only. You can get it from the official NGENUITY software page. NGENUITY is a free configuration route; buying software is not required to select Windows devices or use the physical controls.

A safe adjustment sequence

  1. Install or open NGENUITY on the Windows computer where the headset is connected.
  2. Confirm that the application detects the Cloud III.
  3. Change one playback or microphone control at a time.
  4. Test a game sound and a voice recording or chat check after each change.
  5. Write down a setting you like before trying another variation, so you can return to it.

Use playback controls for game and media balance, and microphone controls for how your voice is captured. Do not expect a playback EQ change to repair an incorrectly selected microphone, or a microphone adjustment to fix missing game audio. If NGENUITY does not detect the headset, first verify the physical connection and Windows endpoint before treating a control as defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand the persistence limitation

HyperX says that settings configured for the wired Cloud III in NGENUITY are not saved onto the USB headset. They therefore do not automatically travel with the headset when you move it to another computer. After switching systems, repeat the Windows device selection and recheck the software-side settings. This is especially important if one computer has NGENUITY installed and another does not. A screenshot or written note of your preferred values is more reliable than expecting the headset to carry them.

Console and non-Windows use

Xbox: do not treat the bundled DTS license as an Xbox control

HyperX states that the Cloud III’s bundled DTS license is usable on PC through the included USB adapter, but that the adapter is unsupported on Xbox. The bundled DTS feature should therefore not be presented as an Xbox setting. HyperX identifies Windows Sonic as a free Xbox alternative in its Xbox DTS support note.

On Xbox, use the connection and spatial-audio controls that the console supports, and verify the console’s chat input and output selections. The Windows NGENUITY workflow does not become an Xbox control simply because the same headset is used. If chat fails, check the console’s mute state and selected microphone before changing any PC software.

PlayStation, Switch, Mac and mobile

HyperX lists compatibility with PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Mac and mobile, as well as 3.5 mm, USB-C and USB-A connection options. The official material does not establish that every software control or spatial-audio feature behaves identically on every platform. On these devices, select the Cloud III where the platform exposes a headset or microphone choice, then use the physical wheel and mute indicator for immediate checks. Platform compatibility means the headset can be used there; it does not promise that Windows-only NGENUITY controls or the PC DTS arrangement are available.

Troubleshooting by symptom

You hear no game audio

  1. Confirm that the headset is connected through the intended USB or analog path.
  2. In Windows Sound settings and the Sound control panel, set HyperX Cloud III as the default playback device.
  3. Open the game’s own audio settings and select the Cloud III if a device selector is available.
  4. Turn the headset wheel up slowly while a known sound is playing.
  5. Check whether the game is muted internally or routed to another output such as speakers, a monitor or a controller.

If the headset works in one application but not another, the remaining problem is likely that application’s output selection rather than the headset’s EQ. Recheck the app after reconnecting the headset because some software chooses a different endpoint when devices change.

Other people cannot hear you

  1. Look at the microphone LED. HyperX says it is lit when muted and off when active.
  2. In Windows, set HyperX Cloud III as the default recording device.
  3. In the voice-chat application, select the Cloud III as the input device.
  4. Check the application’s push-to-talk, mute and input-level controls.
  5. Run the application’s own microphone test before changing NGENUITY settings.

This order isolates a physical mute state and device routing before you spend time on microphone processing. HyperX’s product page says, “The upgraded 10mm microphone captures crystal clear in-game voice chat and calls.” That is manufacturer copy, not an independent measurement, so correct routing and a suitable room still matter.

  • Comfort is King Comfort’s in the Cloud III’s DNA. HyperX signature memory foam in the headband and ear cushions wrapped in soft, premium leatherette make for a plush, comfortable fit all around.
  • Audio Tuned for Your Entertainment Angled 53mm drivers have been tuned by HyperX audio engineers to provide the optimal listening experience that accents the dynamic sounds of gaming.
  • Upgraded Microphone for Clarity and Accuracy Captures high-quality audio for clear voice chat and calls. The mic is noise-cancelling and features a built-in mesh filter to reduce disruptive sounds. It also features an LED mic mute indicator that lets you know when you’re muted.
  • Durability, for the Toughest of Battles The headset is flexible and features a full metal frame so it’s resilient against travel, accidents, mishaps, and those ‘level-headed’ reactions to losses and defeat screens.
  • Quick, Convenient Audio and Mic Controls: Dodge annoying in-game and system menus. Quickly adjust the headphone volume and mute your microphone with controls right on the Cloud III’s earcup.

You can hear chat, but voices are hard to understand

First make sure the chat application is outputting to the Cloud III and that the game is not overwhelming chat with its master volume. Then return to a neutral EQ and make a small presence adjustment only if speech still blends into effects. Avoid a large bass boost, which can cover the frequencies that help words remain distinct. Compare the result at the same comfortable listening level.

Your preferred sound disappears on another computer

That behavior is expected for the wired model if the change was made in NGENUITY: HyperX says those settings are not stored on the USB headset. Reapply the Windows defaults and software settings on the new computer, and keep a written record or screenshot of the values you prefer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are trying to enable DTS on Xbox

The bundled DTS license and USB adapter are documented for PC, not Xbox. On Xbox, use the platform’s supported audio options; HyperX names Windows Sonic as a free alternative. Do not troubleshoot this as if a missing Windows driver were the cause.

A practical test routine for game nights

  1. Connect the headset and wait for Windows to identify it.
  2. Set HyperX Cloud III as both default playback and default recording in the Windows Sound control panel.
  3. Open the game and voice-chat settings and verify their output and input selectors.
  4. Check the microphone LED and set a comfortable level with the wheel.
  5. Play a familiar scene containing speech and effects.
  6. Only then make one small NGENUITY adjustment, if clarity still needs work.
  7. Repeat the same scene and a short microphone test.
  8. Save a note or screenshot of the settings if you use more than one computer.

This sequence keeps routing, physical controls and tonal adjustments separate. It also makes it clear which change to undo if the result becomes worse.

What HyperX’s specifications do—and do not—establish

HyperX’s product copy says, “The upgraded 10mm microphone captures crystal clear in-game voice chat and calls.” That is manufacturer language, not an independent measurement or a guarantee that every game, platform and room will produce the same result. Clear communication still depends on selecting the correct recording endpoint, leaving the microphone unmuted and using the chat application’s own input settings.

Likewise, compatibility with a platform does not prove that every Windows software feature is available there. Connection type, platform support, software control and whether a setting is retained by the device are separate questions. For a wired Cloud III, NGENUITY changes remain software-side rather than being permanently stored on the headset.

Should you buy the Cloud III just to change these settings?

No. The Windows routing steps, physical volume and mute controls, and application device selectors are useful to existing owners. If you are shopping for a wired headset, the exact product is the HyperX Cloud III wired gaming headset; check the current Amazon listing or HyperX product page for price and included accessories. A purchase is not required to apply the setup guidance above.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Windows output setting for the HyperX Cloud III?

Set HyperX Cloud III as the default playback device in Windows, then select the same endpoint in the game if the game provides its own selector.

What should I select as the microphone?

Set HyperX Cloud III as the default recording device in Windows and as the input device in your voice-chat application. Check that the microphone LED is off, because HyperX says the LED is lit when the microphone is muted.

Does the Cloud III keep NGENUITY EQ settings when moved to another PC?

No. HyperX says wired Cloud III settings configured in NGENUITY are not saved onto the USB headset. Reapply them on the next computer.

Is the bundled DTS license available on Xbox?

No. HyperX documents the bundled DTS license and included USB adapter for PC, not Xbox. HyperX names Windows Sonic as a free Xbox alternative.

Is there a universal Cloud III EQ for clearer footsteps and chat?

No manufacturer-confirmed numeric clarity curve is established here. Start neutral, avoid excessive bass, and make one small presence change at a time while comparing the same game scene.

Why can I hear teammates but they cannot hear me?

You may have selected the Cloud III only as the output. Set it separately as the voice application’s input, confirm the Windows recording device, and check the physical mute LED.

Will NGENUITY work on PlayStation, Xbox or mobile?

HyperX’s current NGENUITY page lists Windows availability. The Cloud III itself is listed as compatible with PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Mac and mobile, but identical software controls are not established across those platforms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a 3.5 mm connection use every Windows Cloud III software feature?

The product page lists 3.5 mm, USB-C and USB-A options, but the documented Windows workflow and NGENUITY controls are tied to the supported Windows connection and software path. Select the endpoint exposed by the host you are using.

The Bottom Line

For the clearest starting point, connect the wired Cloud III, set HyperX Cloud III as both Windows playback and recording, and match those choices inside the game and chat app. Check the mute LED and volume wheel before touching EQ. Keep EQ neutral at first, make only small changes, and remember that NGENUITY settings are Windows-side and do not travel with the wired headset. On Xbox, do not expect the bundled DTS license to work; HyperX identifies Windows Sonic as the free alternative.
