Finishing a new horror game leaves you with a specific problem: do you want another tight survival loop, a slower psychological descent, a game built around hiding, or something you can play with friends? The best follow-up depends on the fear you want next, not on a universal ranking. Use the guide below to match your mood to a game, with platform, play-mode and release information included wherever it is established.

Choose your next kind of fear

This grid is a starting point. Read across for the sensation you want, then jump to the game’s section for its structure, pressure points and practical details.

If you want the most complete survival-horror reset

Resident Evil 2 remake

Choose the Resident Evil 2 remake when you want a polished version of the classic survival-horror rhythm: explore, read the environment, solve a puzzle, decide whether ammunition is worth spending, then survive a set piece. GamesRadar highlights its tight gunplay, clever puzzles, gore and zombie-filled Raccoon City. That combination makes it the safest all-purpose recommendation after almost any modern horror release.

The game’s tension comes from competing priorities rather than a single gimmick. You are not merely trying to aim well; you are deciding which rooms to secure, which items to carry and which threats can be avoided. Combat is substantial enough to feel responsive, while the puzzle and exploration structure keeps the campaign from becoming a straightforward action game. If your last game was light on combat, this is a strong way to restore that balance without giving up atmosphere.

#1 Best Overall
Resident Evil Requiem Amazon Exclusive Edition - PlayStation 5
  • Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
  • Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
  • For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
  • An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
  • Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
  • Best for: players who want action, puzzles and a traditional survival-horror loop in equal measure.
  • Pressure profile: measured resource management punctuated by combat and set pieces.
  • Platform coverage: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch through cloud streaming, Switch 2, Xbox One and Xbox Series X.
  • Play mode: solo.

If the story and atmosphere matter more than combat

Alan Wake 2

Alan Wake 2 is the choice for psychological, story-led horror. Its two-location structure follows writer Alan as he battles inner demons while detective Saga Anderson follows his script. The split viewpoint gives the game a broader dramatic shape than a single-character chase: one side is concerned with authorship and inner turmoil, while the other investigates a case that increasingly resembles the fiction being written.

Saga’s chapters are the more survival-horror-oriented portions, so this is a useful follow-up when you want narrative experimentation but still expect moments of careful exploration and danger. It is less suitable if you want uninterrupted enemy pressure or a purely mechanical challenge. The appeal is the way the story, character perspectives and horror premise reinforce one another.

  • Best for: players who want psychological unease, investigation and a prominent narrative.
  • Pressure profile: intermittent survival-horror tension within a story-led structure.
  • Platform coverage: PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X.
  • Play mode: solo.

Silent Hill f

Silent Hill f moves the series’ psychological horror into 1960s Japan. PlayStation describes a town consumed by fog, complex puzzles and grotesque monsters, with choices that confront doubt, regret and madness. That makes it a natural next game when the horror you remember most from your last release was emotional discomfort rather than a high body count.

Its puzzle emphasis matters. You are not simply moving between scares; you are interpreting spaces and decisions while the setting’s historical and cultural frame shapes the unease. Pick it when you want a solo game that asks you to sit with ambiguity and disturbing imagery. It released on PS5 on September 25, 2025.

Rank #2
Project Songbird - PlayStation 5
  • A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
  • A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
  • A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
  • The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
  • The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
  • Best for: psychological horror, puzzle solving and morally uncomfortable choices.
  • Pressure profile: atmosphere and interpretation first, with grotesque monster encounters.
  • Platform: PS5.
  • Play mode: solo.

SILENT HILL: Townfall

SILENT HILL: Townfall is the newest option in this guide and the clearest fit if you specifically want first-person psychological horror. Konami says it launched on September 24, 2026 for PS5, Steam and the Epic Games Store. It is the first full-length first-person game in the series, and its design links puzzles directly to the story while also requiring hiding and life-or-death combat.

That combination gives Townfall a different balance from a pure walking simulator. You have to read the narrative, solve problems and make immediate survival decisions. Choose it after a new release when you want a contemporary game that keeps the psychological focus of Silent Hill but places the camera directly inside the character’s experience.

Konami describes the milestone this way: “SILENT HILL: Townfall is the first psychological horror title in the SILENT HILL series (a series which has sold over 17.8 million copies worldwide*) to feature a fully first-person perspective.” The 17.8 million figure refers to units shipped, store downloads and subscription services worldwide as of the end of June 2026, according to Konami Digital Entertainment.

  • Best for: first-person psychological horror with story-linked puzzles and direct survival decisions.
  • Pressure profile: hiding and combat share space with narrative interpretation.
  • Platforms: PS5, Steam and Epic Games Store.
  • Play mode: solo.

If hiding is more frightening than fighting

Alien: Isolation

Alien: Isolation is the recommendation for sustained predator pressure. Its central appeal is evasion: you are trying to remain alive while a dangerous creature controls the tempo of the encounter. Instead of treating enemies as targets to clear from a room, the game makes you think about sound, exposure and whether moving now is safer than waiting.

Cronos - PlayStation 5
  • Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror where you fight for the future by salvaging the past. Burn monsters before they merge. Extract souls from the living. Adapt or die.
  • Set in a grim world where Eastern European brutalism meets retro-futurist technology, Cronos: The New Dawn lets you experience a gripping story that straddles the line between past and future.
  • The enemies you’ll encounter are nightmarish creatures, born from the remnants of humanity – defeating them will require you to make full use of your arsenal.
  • The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others - through a grotesque process called Merging - to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
  • This physical edition of Cronos: The New Dawn comes with bonus in-game content and a set of collectible stickers.

This is the right follow-up when your last horror game gave you too much ammunition or made combat feel routine. The tension comes from uncertainty about when pursuit will resume and from the knowledge that an apparently safe route can become dangerous. It is also a good choice for players who prefer stealth systems to shooting galleries.

  • Best for: stealth, pursuit and long stretches of vulnerability.
  • Pressure profile: sustained predator threat with combat taking a secondary role.
  • Platform note: platform availability differs by edition; check the store page for your system before buying.
  • Play mode: solo.

If you want horror that questions identity and consciousness

SOMA

SOMA trades conventional supernatural explanation for science-fiction dread. GamesRadar places it in an abandoned research facility populated by broken robots that believe they are people. Its central concern is the relationship between bodies and minds, so the disturbing moments often come from ideas and implications as much as from direct attacks.

Choose SOMA when you want a slower, more reflective experience after a louder action-horror release. Exploration and discovery carry much of the weight, and the setting’s damaged machines make every encounter feel like a question about personhood. The game is especially effective if you enjoy horror that follows you out of the room and into ethical or philosophical thought.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Best for: existential themes, science-fiction settings and psychological unease.
  • Pressure profile: dread built through discovery, implications and vulnerable exploration.
  • Platform coverage: PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
  • Play mode: solo.

If limited supplies should shape every decision

Amnesia: The Bunker

Amnesia: The Bunker is built around scarcity and improvisation. PlayStation describes a First World War bunker with a semi-open structure, adaptive threats, one bullet and a mystery to solve. The single bullet is not a promise that every problem has a shooting solution; it is a reminder that ammunition is an emergency resource whose value depends on timing.

Resident Evil 4 - PS5
  • Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
  • Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
  • Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
  • Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

The semi-open layout changes how you approach progress. Rather than following a purely linear corridor, you must decide where to search, which clues to pursue and how much risk to accept before returning to safety. Adaptive threats mean a familiar route can demand a new response, making preparation and improvisation more important than memorizing a fixed sequence.

  • Best for: players who want resource pressure, open-ended routing and unpredictable danger.
  • Pressure profile: severe scarcity, with a single bullet and adaptive threats encouraging careful planning.
  • Platforms: PS4 and PS5.
  • Release date: June 6, 2023.
  • Play mode: solo.

If you want to investigate horror with other players

Halloween: The Game

Halloween: The Game uses an asymmetrical 1v4 format. One player takes the role of Michael Myers while four rescuers attempt to survive. That structure creates a different kind of fear from a solo campaign: the threat is controlled by another person, so pacing, pursuit and mistakes can vary from match to match.

Choose it when your group enjoys competitive tension and clear roles. It is less appropriate if you want a scripted story or a carefully authored sequence of puzzles. Because the format depends on a live group, confirm the current platform listing and online requirements for your system before committing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Best for: asymmetrical multiplayer and a human-controlled pursuer.
  • Pressure profile: match-based pursuit with one killer against four rescuers.
  • Platform note: the cited PlayStation description does not provide a complete platform list; check the current store listing.
  • Play mode: 1v4 multiplayer.

The Outlast Trials

The Outlast Trials is the flexible option for a group that sometimes plays alone and sometimes gathers friends. PlayStation says it supports solo play or teams of up to four. That lets you keep the oppressive Outlast-style premise when nobody else is available, then change the experience into co-operative problem solving when your group is online.

Resident Evil 7 biohazard Gold Edition - PlayStation 5
  • FEAR COMES HOME -- Fear, combat, exploration, and item management: these are the four pillars of survival horror, a genre that has never been more masterfully executed than in the gameplay of Resident Evil. The horror continues in the ground-breaking Resident Evil 7. Step into the new Isolated View and experience true survival horror in a world created by the all-new RE Engine.
  • DEEP IN THE BAYOU - When Ethan Winters opened his inbox, the last thing he expected was to find an email from his wife; she had been missing for three years. The message was simple: "Come get me," and an address in Louisiana. This leads Ethan to a decrepit mansion in the heart of the bayou. The place has a seriously creepy vibe, but Ethan continues his search – until a stranger attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Ethan has no idea what awaits him when he wakes up...for he is now in the clutches of the Baker family.
  • A NEW PERSPECTIVE -- In RESIDENT EVIL 7, we're changing the way you interact with the world. For this next major entry in the series, play from a first-person point of view, dramatically increasing your ability to become fully absorbed in the world we have created.
  • NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.

Pick it if your priority is shared panic rather than a single-player narrative. A team of four can divide attention and responsibilities, but cooperation does not remove the fear; it changes how you manage it. Confirm the current platform and online-service requirements for your region before starting.

  • Best for: flexible solo or co-operative horror sessions.
  • Pressure profile: group coordination under threat, with the option to play alone.
  • Platform note: check the current platform listing because the cited description does not enumerate systems.
  • Play mode: solo or co-op for up to four players.

Phasmophobia

Phasmophobia turns horror into an investigation. Your team identifies more than 20 ghost types across more than 10 locations, so the objective is not simply to reach an exit; it is to gather enough evidence to determine what you are facing. That makes each session a deduction exercise as well as a fear experience.

It is the best match here for friends who like methodical play. You can divide tasks, compare observations and decide when the evidence is strong enough to leave. The variety of ghost types and locations gives the game a repeatable structure, but the exact platform availability should be checked on the current store page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Best for: co-operative investigation and evidence-based deduction.
  • Pressure profile: uncertainty while identifying one of more than 20 ghost types.
  • Platform note: verify the current platform listing before purchase.
  • Play mode: multiplayer investigation.

How to pick quickly after the credits roll

  1. Decide whether you want agency or vulnerability. Choose Resident Evil 2 remake for confident combat decisions, Amnesia: The Bunker for scarcity, or Alien: Isolation when hiding is the point.
  2. Choose your preferred kind of story. Alan Wake 2 is a character-driven psycho-terror, Silent Hill f emphasizes psychological choices and puzzles, Townfall puts that perspective in first person, and SOMA explores bodies and minds through science fiction.
  3. Check who will be playing. The first seven recommendations are solo-focused. Halloween: The Game requires a 1v4 match, The Outlast Trials supports solo or up to four players, and Phasmophobia is built around group investigation.
  4. Confirm your hardware before buying. Resident Evil 2 remake has the broadest listed coverage, while Silent Hill f is listed for PS5 and Townfall for PS5, Steam and Epic Games Store. For titles whose platform list is not provided here, use the current store page for your system.
  5. Use release recency as a tie-breaker, not the main criterion. Townfall released September 24, 2026; Silent Hill f released September 25, 2025; Amnesia: The Bunker released June 6, 2023. Older games remain the better fit when their fear profile matches what you want.

Buying a physical PS5 copy

If you want a straightforward physical follow-up, search for the phrase Resident Evil 2 remake for PS5. A listing described as a Resident Evil 2 physical copy is the relevant format when you want a disc rather than a download. Before ordering, verify the edition, price, stock status and region on the live Amazon listing; those details can change and are not fixed by the game’s platform listing.
