It is marked Deck Verified and has a ProtonDB Platinum aggregate in the cited coverage, giving it the strongest documented combination of official and community compatibility evidence in this group. For different tastes, Alien: Isolation delivers sustained stealth tension, SOMA is the most atmospheric story-led choice, Outlast specializes in frantic chases, and Dead Space covers action-heavy survival horror. Phasmophobia is the multiplayer option, but microphone, anti-cheat and online-service behavior make it less predictable than an offline campaign.
Steam Deck compatibility changes as games, Proton and SteamOS are updated. Use Valve’s label as the first filter, then read recent ProtonDB reports before installing. The guide below separates high-confidence evidence from cases where the current label or medal is not established.

What “runs well” means on Steam Deck
Steam Deck is a Linux handheld, so many Windows horror games run through Valve’s Proton compatibility layer rather than a native Linux build. Proton translates the game and its middleware for SteamOS. Valve says that, when a game runs through Proton, the game and its middleware should be supported by Proton. That does not make every title equally reliable: launchers, video playback, controller mapping, anti-cheat and online services can still behave differently from a Windows installation.

Valve’s review process assigns each game a Steam Deck compatibility category. The four categories are Verified, Playable, Unsupported and Unknown. Verified is the best official signal, but it is not a permanent guarantee. A game patch, a SteamOS update or a new Proton revision can change the result, so treat the badge as a current assessment rather than a lifetime promise.

ProtonDB adds a second, community-maintained layer of evidence. Its reports and aggregate medals can reveal details that a store badge does not: a required launch option, a controller workaround, a video glitch, a troublesome launcher or a regression after an update. Read the newest reports first and look for people using a Steam Deck or a comparable Linux configuration. A high medal is encouraging; it is not a substitute for checking the actual report text.

The best choices, by the kind of horror you want
Resident Evil 2 (remake): the confidence-first recommendation
If you want one purchase with the strongest documented Deck case, choose the Resident Evil 2 remake. Steam Deck HQ reports both a Deck Verified label and a ProtonDB Platinum aggregate. That combination means Valve’s review found it suitable for the handheld’s requirements and the community reports are unusually positive.
It is a conventional survival-horror structure: explore interconnected areas, solve environmental problems, manage ammunition and decide when combat is worth the cost. The remake’s polished presentation makes it a good showcase for the Deck, while its single-player design avoids the microphone, anti-cheat and server variables that complicate online games. Verified does not eliminate the need to check after updates, but it gives you the best starting confidence in this shortlist.

Alien: Isolation is the right fit when the fear comes from being hunted rather than overpowering enemies. Steam Deck HQ includes it among its Deck horror recommendations. Its campaign is single-player, so you can suspend play, use headphones and control the pace without coordinating with other players.

Before installing, read recent ProtonDB entries for the exact build you are using. Look specifically for controller behavior, cut-scene playback and any launch option that a current report identifies. Do not copy an old workaround automatically: Proton changes can make a once-essential override unnecessary or even counterproductive. If the default Proton tool launches and controls work, keep that configuration until a newer report gives you a reason to change it.
SOMA: atmospheric, story-led science-fiction horror
SOMA suits players who value isolation, sound design and narrative more than constant combat. It appears in the same Steam Deck recommendation coverage as Alien: Isolation and is commonly treated as a strong low-input, headphone-focused choice. The slower rhythm makes it easier to play in short handheld sessions while still preserving a sustained sense of dread.
Its cited coverage does not establish a specific Valve label, ProtonDB medal or universal performance figure. Check the current ProtonDB report before purchase, then test the opening sequence with your preferred audio output and controller layout. Story-heavy games can expose problems through video playback or audio routing even when basic movement works, so confirm those functions before committing to a long campaign.
Outlast and Outlast 2: chase-heavy first-person horror
The Outlast games are for readers who want immediate vulnerability. Steam Deck HQ includes the series in its recommendations. Their first-person design centers on running, hiding and managing exposure rather than building a powerful combat loadout.

Treat the two games as separate compatibility checks. A successful installation of Outlast does not establish that Outlast 2 has identical video, controller or Proton behavior. Read recent reports for each title, launch the game with the default compatibility tool first and only add an override when a current report identifies a concrete problem. Because the cited material supplies no common FPS measurement, judge the experience by frame-time consistency, responsiveness and whether shader compilation causes distracting pauses during your own first session.
Dead Space: choose between the original and remake deliberately
Dead Space is the action-oriented choice in this group. The cited Deck recommendation includes the franchise, but the original release and the newer remake should not be treated as the same technical proposition.
The original is the older option and may be preferable if you want a lighter installation or the classic presentation. The remake offers a more demanding modern production. The available evidence does not establish a shared Valve label, ProtonDB medal or comparable performance result for both versions, so open the individual Steam page and ProtonDB entry for the exact edition you intend to buy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor either version, confirm that gamepad input, display mode and audio are working before beginning a long campaign. If you are comparing editions on the Deck, make the comparison using the same SteamOS and Proton state; changing both the game and the compatibility tool at once makes it difficult to identify the cause of a problem.

Phasmophobia: multiplayer, but not the safest universal pick
Phasmophobia fills a different role from the offline recommendations. It is built around investigating haunted locations with other players, and the microphone is part of the experience. Search-result evidence identifies Steam Deck and Proton discussion, but the cited material does not establish a stable official rating. That is why it should not be presented as the safest universal Deck recommendation.
Check current ProtonDB reports for microphone input, voice recognition, anti-cheat and online-service behavior before buying. Test the microphone in a private session, then confirm that matchmaking works on the same Proton version you plan to use for regular play. A game can start successfully and still fail at the online or voice stage, so those checks matter more here than they do for a purely offline campaign.
How to check a game before you install it
- Open the individual Steam store page. Look for the current Steam Deck compatibility badge and expand the compatibility details. Record whether the page says Verified, Playable, Unsupported or Unknown; do not infer a label from another edition or sequel.
- Read the notes behind the badge. Valve’s review can flag small text, controller, display or launcher limitations. A Playable game may still be a good choice if its limitation does not affect the way you intend to play.
- Open the game’s ProtonDB page. Sort attention toward recent Steam Deck reports. Search for the exact issue you care about, such as video playback, controller mapping, launch options, anti-cheat or shader-compilation stutter.
- Install with the default compatibility tool first. Let Steam use its normal Proton selection unless a current report gives a specific reason to override it. This establishes a clean baseline.
- Force a Proton version only when needed. In Steam, open Library, select the game, choose Properties, open Compatibility, enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and select the version recommended by a recent report. Return to this menu to remove the override if a later Proton release fixes the problem.
- Run a short acceptance test. Start a new game, move through the opening area, test every control you expect to use, watch a cut-scene, adjust audio and suspend/resume the Deck. For multiplayer games, test voice input and matchmaking as well.
- Keep a working configuration. Note the Proton version and any launch option that actually helped. Recheck ProtonDB after a major game, Proton or SteamOS update because a previously reliable setup can regress or improve.
Troubleshooting common Deck horror problems
The game does not launch
Return to Properties > Compatibility and remove an old forced Proton selection, then try the default tool. If the default fails, test the version named in recent ProtonDB reports. Check that the game has finished installing and that Steam is not waiting for a pending shader or compatibility update. If several versions fail, read the newest reports for a launcher, anti-cheat or known regression rather than repeatedly changing random settings.
Controls work in the menu but not in the game
Restart with the Deck’s built-in controller profile, then check the game’s own control settings. ProtonDB reports often identify title-specific controller problems. If a report recommends a Proton override, apply it per game through the Compatibility menu instead of changing the global Steam setting, so other games keep their known-good configuration.

Video, cut-scenes or audio are broken
Read the report text for the exact game and Proton version. Video playback and middleware can fail independently of basic rendering. Try the current recommended Proton tool, then retest a cut-scene and audio output. Do not assume that a workaround for one horror game applies to another; each title can use different middleware.
Performance feels uneven or stutters
No single comparable FPS figure is published for this shortlist, so a number quoted for one Deck, Proton revision or graphics setting would not predict your result. Distinguish a brief first-run shader-compilation pause from recurring frame-time spikes. Let the game complete its initial processing, then test the same area again. If stutter persists, consult recent ProtonDB reports for a known regression or settings change and compare results after updating SteamOS and Proton.
Phasmophobia cannot use the microphone or connect online
Check SteamOS microphone permissions, the selected input device and the game’s voice settings. Then read current ProtonDB reports for anti-cheat and online-service status. Test in a private lobby before arranging a group session. If a Proton update changes online behavior, remove an obsolete override and retest the default tool before trying an older one.

- Choose Resident Evil 2 (remake) when documented compatibility confidence is your priority.
- Choose Alien: Isolation for a long stealth campaign built around being hunted.
- Choose SOMA for science-fiction atmosphere, narrative and headphone play.
- Choose Outlast or Outlast 2 for repeated chases, hiding and first-person panic.
- Choose Dead Space when you want combat-forward survival horror; verify the original and remake separately.
- Choose Phasmophobia only after checking current microphone, anti-cheat and multiplayer reports.
Keep your expectations current
Compatibility is a moving target. Valve’s Proton updates can make previously troublesome games more playable, while a game patch or online-service change can introduce a new problem. Proton 11 coverage is a useful reminder that the result is tied to the software stack, not just the game title.
For an offline game, a Verified badge plus recent positive ProtonDB reports is a strong buying signal, with Resident Evil 2 the clearest example in this list. For every other title, treat the Steam page and the newest ProtonDB entries as the final authority immediately before purchase or installation. That small check is more reliable than an old compatibility claim copied from a launch-era review.
