One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor most holiday displays, the Meross MSS620BHK is the best all-purpose outdoor HomeKit plug because it combines an IP44 weather-resistant housing with two independently controlled sockets and sunrise/sunset scheduling. Choose Eve Energy Outdoor when Thread, local automations, energy data, or a professionally installed outlet matter more. Use the Philips Hue Smart Plug only indoors or in a weather-protected location, and choose Nanoleaf Matter outdoor string lights when you want integrated multicolor scenes rather than a plug controlling conventional lights.
Quick comparison
These products solve different problems. Meross is an outdoor plug for switching two separate loads. Eve is a single-outlet, Thread-based product aimed at local reliability, energy monitoring, and installed-outlet integration. Philips Hue’s plug is useful for bringing a conventional lamp or light string into a Hue and Apple Home setup, but its IP20 rating makes it unsuitable for exposed outdoor use. Nanoleaf’s Matter outdoor string lights are an integrated lighting system rather than a general-purpose outlet.

Which option is best for your display?
Best general-purpose outdoor plug: Meross MSS620BHK
Choose the Meross MSS620BHK when the display has two circuits that need separate schedules. One socket can run roofline lights while the other controls an inflatable, a tree, or landscape lighting. Meross explicitly lists garden, backyard, Christmas tree, and landscape-lighting use cases, and says the two sockets can be controlled individually in the Meross app or Apple Home.
The IP44 housing and socket covers are the key outdoor features. IP44 is a protection rating, not permission to submerge the device or leave every connection exposed to standing water. Place the plug where its covers can close fully, keep the power connection elevated and oriented to shed water, and follow the electrical requirements for your region. The MSS620BHK cited here is the US/CA model, so do not assume its plug format or electrical limits apply to another market.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Meross documents schedules for each socket and sunrise/sunset settings. That makes it practical for displays that should come on at dusk and turn off at a fixed bedtime, while still allowing one load to follow a different timetable. The product page displayed a $25.99 sale price and “In stock, ready to ship” when captured in 2026; neither price nor stock should be treated as permanent.
Best for Thread, local operation, and energy monitoring: Eve Energy Outdoor
Eve Energy Outdoor is the specialist choice when the priority is Thread networking, energy information, or automations that continue locally. Eve documents Apple Home support, Thread, schedules, scenes, remote control through a compatible hub, and energy monitoring in Apple Home through the Eve app.
Its schedules are documented to run independently of a hub, iPhone, or internet connection. That is useful for a holiday display that must follow a timetable even when cloud access is unavailable. Remote access is a separate requirement: Eve specifies a compatible hub with Matter Controller and Thread Border Router functionality for controlling the device from afar.

The cited technical sheet is for the EU model. It lists 220–240 V, a 16 A/3680 W maximum, a 10 A/2300 W permanent load, and IP44. The maximum and permanent-load figures are not interchangeable: size a continuous holiday load against the permanent-load specification, and never exceed the limits for your exact regional model. Eve also says the product may be connected, installed, and commissioned only by an authorized electrician. That requirement makes it unsuitable as a casual plug-in purchase for many renters or temporary displays.

Best for an existing Hue system: Philips Hue Smart Plug
The Philips Hue Smart Plug is the natural fit when the household already uses Hue scenes, the Hue app, or a Hue Bridge. It can turn a conventional light—one that cannot accept a Hue bulb—into a light controllable through the Hue app or voice control. The cited specifications list Bluetooth, Hue Bridge support, Apple Home compatibility, and voice assistants when used with a Bridge.
The decisive limitation is IP20. That rating is for indoor use, so the plug should remain inside or in a genuinely weather-protected location. Do not place the plug, its outlet, or an exposed connection on a porch or in a yard simply because the light string itself is labeled for outdoor use. The page displayed $49.99 and “In stock” at the 2026 capture; regional pricing and availability can change.
Best for integrated color scenes: Nanoleaf Matter outdoor string lights
Apple’s current Home lighting catalog lists Nanoleaf Essentials Matter Smart Multicolor Outdoor String Lights. This is the better direction when the objective is animated or multicolor lighting scenes controlled as one integrated product, rather than switching ordinary strings with a smart plug.

The cited catalog entry does not establish the exact kit length, outdoor IP rating, power-supply design, or maximum number of extensions. Check the specific kit and regional listing for those figures before installation. Matter compatibility does not replace an outdoor safety rating: confirm the complete system—including controller, power supply, connectors, and extension cables—is suitable for the location.

How to choose between the products
Start with the electrical installation
- Exposed outdoor placement: Limit candidates to products with a documented outdoor rating. Meross and Eve are documented IP44; the Hue plug is IP20 and should stay protected indoors.
- Existing outdoor receptacle: A plug-in unit such as Meross may be appropriate if the receptacle, cover, and cable routing are also suitable for outdoor use.
- Installed or replacement outlet: Eve’s electrician-only installation requirement must be accepted before purchase.
- Regional voltage and plug format: Match the exact model to the electrical system. The Eve figures cited here are for 220–240 V EU hardware, while the Meross model cited is US/CA.
Count the independently controlled loads
Two outlets are useful only when they can be addressed separately. Meross documents two individually controlled sockets, so roofline lights and a yard decoration can have different schedules. Eve and Hue are single-outlet products. Nanoleaf string lights provide one integrated lighting system rather than two switched receptacles.
Decide whether local operation matters
Eve is the clearest choice when local scheduling is a requirement: Eve documents schedules that can operate without a hub, iPhone, or internet connection. Meross documents Wi-Fi control and sunrise/sunset schedules, which is convenient for Apple Home routines but should not be confused with Eve’s specific local-operation claim. For remote Apple Home control while away, plan around a compatible Apple home hub and the networking requirements of the chosen product; Eve additionally specifies a compatible hub with Matter Controller and Thread Border Router functions.
Choose the ecosystem deliberately
- General Apple Home setup: Meross is the straightforward outdoor-power option when two circuits are needed; Eve is the more network- and data-focused alternative.
- Hue household: The Hue plug keeps conventional lights inside the Hue control model, but only when the plug itself is protected from weather.
- Color-lighting scenes: Nanoleaf’s Matter outdoor strings are designed as an integrated multicolor route. Verify the exact kit’s outdoor specifications first.
Setting up an outdoor holiday display safely
1. Inventory every load
Write down each light string, inflatable, extension, transformer, and decoration that will be powered. Separate items that need different schedules. A two-socket plug is valuable only if the circuits are genuinely independent; do not use one outlet merely to create a larger daisy chain.
2. Confirm ratings before connecting anything
- Check the smart plug’s regional voltage, current, wattage, and continuous-load ratings.
- Check the lighting manufacturer’s total wattage and any restrictions on outdoor extension cables.
- For Eve’s EU model, keep continuous demand within the documented 10 A/2300 W permanent-load limit and never exceed 16 A/3680 W maximum.
- For Meross, use the electrical limits printed for the exact US/CA unit; the cited page does not establish a universal wattage figure.
- For Nanoleaf, verify the complete kit’s power supply and extension limit because the cited catalog entry does not state them.
3. Protect the connection points
IP44 does not make a connection suitable for immersion. Keep plugs and adapters off the ground, prevent cable loops from collecting water, close socket covers completely, and use outdoor-rated covers and extension equipment where required by local electrical rules. Do not place a Hue IP20 plug outside, even if it is inside a decorative enclosure that can admit moisture.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
4. Add the device to Apple Home
- Install the manufacturer’s app if the product requires it, and update the device before mounting it outside.
- Add the accessory to Apple Home using the product’s supported HomeKit or Matter onboarding process.
- Assign a clear room and name, such as “Roofline” and “Yard tree,” so Siri commands and automations address the intended load.
- Test manual on/off control from the same Wi-Fi network before relying on an away-from-home routine.
- For remote control, confirm that the Apple home hub and, for Eve, the required Matter Controller and Thread Border Router are online and located within reliable radio range.
5. Build schedules around the display
Use sunrise/sunset scheduling where available for dusk activation, then add a fixed shutoff time to avoid running lights all night. Meross documents sunrise/sunset settings and per-socket schedules. Eve documents schedules and scenes, including schedules that can run locally. For a two-load Meross setup, give each socket its own schedule rather than placing both loads in one scene when the operating times differ.
6. Test failure and recovery behavior
- Turn the controlling phone’s Wi-Fi off and verify whether the expected local schedule still runs; Eve specifically documents this behavior for its schedules.
- Restart the home hub and router separately to identify whether remote access depends on either one.
- After a power interruption, check whether each load returns to the intended state and whether the schedule remains present.
- Inspect outdoor connections after rain, snow, or freezing weather, and remove power if a cover cannot close or moisture is visible.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming HomeKit or Matter means outdoor-safe
HomeKit and Matter describe control and interoperability, not weather protection. The Hue plug demonstrates the distinction: it supports Apple Home but is rated IP20. Always evaluate the enclosure, sockets, cable, power supply, and connection covers separately.
Mixing regional models
Voltage, plug shape, current limits, and installation rules vary. The Eve specifications quoted above are for an EU model, and the Meross candidate is identified as US/CA. Buy the model intended for the country where it will be installed, then read that model’s label and manual rather than copying another region’s numbers.
Overloading a single circuit
Two smart sockets do not double the capacity of the household circuit feeding them. Add the wattage of every connected load, account for continuous operation, and follow local electrical-code requirements. If the display includes high-draw heaters, motors, or large inflatables, have an electrician assess the circuit instead of treating a smart plug as a capacity upgrade.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Putting the hub too far from Thread devices
Thread relies on a mesh radio network. Eve’s remote and Matter features depend on a compatible hub with Thread Border Router functionality, so place that hub where the outdoor device can maintain a stable path. A schedule may still be local, but poor radio placement can prevent setup, status updates, or remote commands.
Buying a string-light kit without checking its exact specifications
The Nanoleaf category is promising for multicolor scenes, but the cited Apple catalog does not provide the individual kit’s IP rating, length, power supply, or extension limit. Those details can vary by kit and region. Treat the exact retailer or manufacturer listing as the authority for the package you will install.
Decision guide
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Why | Check before purchase |

| Thread and energy information | Eve Energy Outdoor | Thread, Apple Home energy monitoring through the Eve app, and documented local schedules | EU voltage model, permanent-load limit, compatible hub, and authorized electrician |
| Hue scenes for an indoor or sheltered light | Philips Hue Smart Plug | Bluetooth, Hue Bridge, Apple Home, and voice-control integration | IP20 means no exposed outdoor placement |
| Integrated multicolor outdoor lighting | Nanoleaf Matter outdoor string lights | Matter-oriented string lighting for Apple Home scenes | Exact kit IP rating, length, power supply, and maximum extensions |
What you need for reliable away-from-home control
Separate three ideas that are often conflated: local scheduling, control while your phone is on the home network, and control when you are away. Eve explicitly states that its schedules can operate without a hub, iPhone, or internet connection. Remote control is different and requires a compatible hub; Eve specifies one that provides Matter Controller and Thread Border Router functionality. Apple Home remote access and automations also depend on the home-hub setup supported by your current Apple devices and software. Test away-from-home control before leaving a display unattended.

Quick Recap
Bottom line by household
- Most homes with ordinary outdoor strings: Meross MSS620BHK is the most practical starting point when two separately timed loads are needed.
- Homes prioritizing local control and energy visibility: Eve Energy Outdoor offers the strongest documented Thread and energy-monitoring feature set, provided the regional model and electrician requirement fit the installation.
- Hue households with a sheltered location: Philips Hue Smart Plug preserves Hue and Apple Home control, but it is not an exposed outdoor plug.
- Displays designed around color and scenes: Nanoleaf Matter outdoor string lights avoid a separate plug, but only after the exact kit’s weather and power specifications are confirmed.
