Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor smoother Hogwarts Legacy multiplayer-mod sessions, prioritize consistent frame times over the highest uncapped FPS: install the game and mod on an SSD, match texture quality to your graphics card’s VRAM, disable ray tracing before making larger image-quality sacrifices, cap FPS at a rate your PC can hold, and verify that every player is using the server’s required Hogwarts MP build and mods. These steps reduce the most common sources of traversal, combat and group-activity hitching without promising a universal FPS increase.
What “smooth” means in Hogwarts MP
A high average frame rate does not guarantee smooth play. If frame delivery alternates between short and long intervals, camera movement can feel uneven even when an FPS counter looks acceptable. Multiplayer activity can make those spikes easier to notice because the game is rendering your surroundings while the mod synchronizes a group session.

Use frame-time consistency as the primary test. Walk through a busy area, fight, and then repeat the test with several players nearby. A setting that produces a lower but stable frame rate is usually preferable to an uncapped result that swings sharply.

Hogwarts MP is a free, open-source mod for legitimate Steam or Epic copies of Hogwarts Legacy on Windows PC. Its in-game mod manager synchronizes mods and is enforced by the server. Shared story or quest progression is not a completed feature, so a smoother graphics configuration improves the parts of multiplayer the mod currently supports; it does not add a finished shared campaign.

Start with storage, memory and the official performance targets
Install both game and mod on an SSD
Warner Bros. Games and Avalanche Software list an SSD as preferred even at the minimum specification, and their recommended, ultra and ultra-4K tiers specify 85 GB of SSD storage. The modding guidance also recommends an SSD installation. Put the game, mod files and active installation on the SSD rather than splitting them between a hard drive and an SSD. This will not raise a fixed GPU limit, but it gives the game and mod faster access to assets during loading and traversal.
Use the hardware table as a target, not a guarantee
The official table associates each tier with a resolution and frame-rate objective. Those figures describe the publisher’s target conditions, not a promise for every driver, patch, scene or multiplayer group.
| Official tier | Memory and graphics examples | Published target | Storage requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 16 GB RAM; GeForce GTX 960 4 GB or Radeon RX 470 4 GB | 720p at 30 fps on low settings | SSD preferred |
| Recommended/high | 16 GB RAM; GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, Radeon RX 5700 XT or Intel Arc A770 | 1080p at 60 fps on high settings | 85 GB SSD |
| Ultra | 32 GB RAM; GeForce RTX 2080 Ti or Radeon RX 6800 XT | 1440p at 60 fps on ultra settings | 85 GB SSD |
| Ultra 4K | 32 GB RAM; GeForce RTX 3090 Ti or Radeon RX 7900 XT | 2160p at 60 fps on ultra 4K settings | 85 GB SSD |
The specifications were accessed in 2026. If your computer sits between tiers, begin with the lower target and raise one option at a time. Multiplayer scenes can be more demanding than a short solo benchmark, so leave headroom instead of tuning for a frame rate your system only reaches in an empty area.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose texture quality from VRAM first
Texture quality primarily consumes graphics memory. The following bands are community guidance from the Nexus Mods settings guide, not an official benchmark or a guarantee for a particular GPU model. Treat them as a starting point and lower the setting if your GPU memory is saturated or traversal becomes uneven.
| Available VRAM | Starting texture setting | When to step down |
|---|---|---|
| 4 GB | Low | Lower effects or other GPU-heavy options if stutter remains; avoid raising textures first. |
| 6 GB | Medium | Move to Low if memory pressure appears during travel or group activity. |
| 8–10 GB | High | Use Medium when a busy scene causes hitching despite a stable FPS cap. |
| 12 GB or more | Ultra | Drop to High if other settings leave insufficient memory headroom. |
Do not assume that more VRAM automatically fixes every hitch. Ray tracing, shadows, effects, resolution and the selected upscaler can still saturate the GPU or create uneven frame times.
Reduce GPU spikes in the right order
1. Turn off ray tracing when frame times spike
Disable ray tracing first when the GPU is saturated or frame times jump during traversal and combat. Ray-traced effects can impose a large workload, and removing them often preserves the game’s resolution and texture detail better than cutting both at once. Test the same route or encounter after changing only this option so you can identify the cause.

2. Lower shadows and effects
If ray tracing is already disabled, reduce shadow quality and then effects quality. These settings can become expensive in scenes with many lights, particles or characters. Change one setting, reload the same type of scene, and check whether the frame-time spikes become less frequent. Avoid dropping every option simultaneously; that hides which adjustment helped and can reduce image quality more than necessary.

When native rendering is too heavy, select a quality mode in the available upscaling option before lowering the display resolution. A quality mode renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the output, preserving more apparent detail than an immediate large resolution cut. If the GPU remains saturated, move to a more performance-oriented mode or lower resolution as a final step.
4. Keep textures within the VRAM band
After changing the options above, return to the VRAM table rather than raising textures to fill unused visual headroom. Texture allocation that exceeds practical memory can cause streaming hitches even when the average frame rate appears adequate.
Set an FPS cap for consistent frame delivery
Use the GPU control panel to cap the game at the highest frame rate your system can hold consistently. For example, a computer that oscillates between 60 and 85 fps will generally feel better capped near the stable level it can sustain in demanding scenes than left uncapped. The exact cap depends on your hardware, display and multiplayer situation; the important measurement is whether frame times remain even during travel and group activity.
- Run the game with ray tracing disabled and your chosen texture, shadow, effects and upscaling settings.
- Visit a demanding area, traverse between locations, and repeat the test with other players nearby.
- Identify the highest frame rate that does not produce repeated long pauses or large swings.
- Enter your GPU control panel and apply that value as the game’s frame-rate limit.
- Repeat the same route after major game, driver or mod updates because the sustainable ceiling can change.
Use in-game VSync only as a last resort if you cannot obtain acceptable pacing with a control-panel cap. VSync can reduce tearing, but it may add latency or lock the game to a less suitable refresh interval. If you use it, retest input response and frame-time consistency rather than assuming it improved smoothness.
Allow shader compilation to finish after changes
After an update, driver change or shader-cache clear, early sessions can stutter while shaders are built. The settings guide warns that this temporary work can make the first minutes of play look worse than later sessions. Give the game time to compile before judging a new graphics configuration.

- Avoid changing several graphics options during that first pass, because each change can make comparisons harder.
- Once traversal and combat have been repeated after compilation, evaluate the stable frame-time pattern.
- If severe hitching continues after compilation, return to the GPU-priority sequence: ray tracing, shadows, effects, upscaling and finally resolution.
Prepare the multiplayer installation before troubleshooting graphics
Graphics settings cannot correct a version or mod mismatch. The Hogwarts MP FAQ tells players to use a legitimate game copy and check the server’s advertised build, release channel, password and required mods. The feature documentation says the server enforces mod management and keeps the active mod set synchronized.
- Open the server listing or announcement and record its advertised Hogwarts MP build and release channel.
- Install every required mod and use the exact build requested by that server.
- Confirm that each player has the same game edition source, mod build and required-mod set.
- Only after the group can connect with matching versions should you compare graphics settings.
A mismatch can look like a performance problem because players may fail to join, desynchronize or encounter inconsistent behavior. Resolve the version and required-mod checks first, then profile frame times locally.
A practical baseline for different PCs
| PC situation | Texture starting point | Ray tracing | Upscaling and resolution | FPS approach |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 GB VRAM near the official minimum | Low | Disabled | Start at 720p or the display resolution you can sustain; use quality upscaling if available | Cap below the rate that causes repeated spikes; the official minimum target is 30 fps at 720p low |
| 6 GB VRAM mid-range system | Medium | Disabled initially | Use a quality upscaler before a major resolution reduction | Choose the highest stable cap after testing travel and combat |
| 8–10 GB VRAM targeting 1080p | High | Disable if frame times are uneven | Keep native output if stable; otherwise use quality upscaling | Use the stable ceiling rather than an uncapped 60-plus average |
| 12 GB or more targeting 1440p or higher | Ultra | Enable only if frame times remain consistent | Use quality upscaling when the GPU is saturated | Cap to the rate held in multiplayer scenes, not only solo areas |
This is a tuning baseline, not a set of guaranteed presets. The published VRAM bands are version-sensitive community guidance, while the resolution and frame-rate targets in the hardware table come from the owner-published specifications.

Diagnose stutter by symptom
Stutter during traversal
First verify the SSD installation and allow shader compilation to finish. Then check whether texture quality exceeds the VRAM band. If the hitching coincides with GPU saturation, disable ray tracing and lower shadows or effects before changing resolution.
Stutter during combat or heavy effects
Reduce effects quality, then shadows, and test again in a comparable encounter. A quality upscaler can reduce rendering load while keeping the output resolution. Keep the FPS cap at the level your system can sustain when particles and lighting are active.
Uneven motion despite a high FPS counter
Replace the uncapped setting with a control-panel cap. Lower the cap until the same demanding route produces even frame times. Use VSync only if the cap alone does not provide acceptable presentation and you can tolerate any added latency.

Problems only when other players are present
Confirm that every participant uses the server’s advertised build, release channel and required mods. If versions match, compare GPU load and frame times during the same group activity. Lower ray tracing, shadows, effects or upscaling quality while keeping the frame cap stable.
Join failures or desynchronization
Treat this as an installation or server-compatibility issue before changing graphics. Recheck the legitimate game copy requirement, server password, release channel, advertised build and required-mod list in the FAQ and server announcement.
How to test a change without fooling yourself
- Write down the current resolution, texture tier, ray-tracing state, shadows, effects, upscaler mode and FPS cap.
- Use one repeatable route that includes traversal, one combat encounter and a short period near other players.
- Change only one major option, or one closely related group such as ray tracing and its dependent effects.
- Repeat the route after shader compilation has completed and compare hitch frequency, not just the highest FPS shown.
- Keep the change only if it improves consistency without creating a new problem, such as visibly poor image quality or input delay.
Retest after patches, driver updates and mod-build changes. The official hardware targets and community texture guidance are reference points; your actual sustainable cap is determined by the scenes you play and the players connected to the server.
What these settings can and cannot guarantee
No universal FPS uplift has been published for Hogwarts MP, so there is no defensible number that every system should gain from these changes. The recommendations are intended to reduce avoidable pressure and smooth frame delivery: SSD storage addresses asset access, VRAM-matched textures limit memory pressure, ray-tracing and shadow reductions lower GPU load, upscaling reduces internal rendering work, and a cap prevents unstable peaks from turning into uneven pacing.
They cannot turn minimum-tier hardware into an ultra-4K system, eliminate every shader-compilation hitch, or repair a server-side build mismatch. Use the official tier targets to set realistic expectations, then tune for the frame-time behavior you actually observe during multiplayer play.
