Best HMD and Nokia Phone Alternatives for Long Software Support

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Choose the Google Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro for the simplest long-support Android experience. Both receive seven years of Android updates, security upgrades and feature drops. Samsung’s Galaxy S24 and S25 match that seven-year class of support while offering a broader flagship range. Fairphone 5 is the strongest choice if you plan to keep one phone for as long as possible: it guarantees at least eight years of software support, includes five major Android upgrades and has a five-year warranty. OnePlus can work, but its published baseline is only three years of security updates, so you must check the exact model.

What makes these phones better long-term alternatives?

“Long support” has two separate parts. Major Android upgrades add new operating-system features and can extend app compatibility. Security updates fix vulnerabilities after the phone stops receiving major Android releases. A manufacturer may promise many security years but fewer Android versions, so compare both numbers rather than treating one as a complete support guarantee.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Support is also different from update timing. A seven-year promise tells you how long updates are intended to be provided; it does not prove that every device receives every patch on the same day. Samsung states that timing can vary by model, network provider and market. Similar carrier and regional differences can affect other manufacturers.

Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro: the cleanest mainstream choice

What Google promises

Google says the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro receive seven years of software updates, covering Android releases, security upgrades and feature drops. The company describes the commitment as a way to keep the phones secure and performing well for seven years. That is unusually straightforward: one stated period covers the main categories most buyers care about.

The seven-year figure is a support commitment, not a claim that every feature will remain identical throughout the phone’s life. Some capabilities can depend on hardware, region, language, account status or network support. The meaningful comparison is that Google explicitly includes Android updates, security updates and feature drops in the same seven-year window.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why Pixel suits an HMD or Nokia owner

  • Predictable Android experience: Pixel software is close to Google’s version of Android, so there is less manufacturer interface layered over the operating system.
  • Clear support language: the seven-year commitment is easier to evaluate than a policy that lists only security patches.
  • Feature drops as well as patches: Google includes periodic feature additions in the stated software window.
  • Two sizes and tiers: the standard Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro let you choose between a more compact flagship and a larger, higher-tier device.

What to check before buying

Confirm that the exact Pixel model is officially sold in your country and supports your carrier’s bands and calling features. A long update policy does not compensate for poor local service, unavailable parts or an incompatible network. The seven-year promise also does not establish a universal repair price or warranty term; those details must be checked for your market.

Samsung Galaxy S24 and S25: seven years with the broadest ecosystem

Galaxy S24

Samsung states that the Galaxy S24 receives seven generations of operating-system upgrades and seven years of security updates. The two promises should be read separately: seven OS generations describe the number of major Android-version transitions, while the seven-year security period describes vulnerability fixes.

The S24 family is a practical alternative when you want long support but also need Samsung’s wider ecosystem of phones, tablets, watches, accessories and service centers. The ecosystem can matter more than a small specification difference if you already use Samsung devices or depend on local repair coverage.

Galaxy S25

Samsung says the Galaxy S25 series supports seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates from the global launch date. “From global launch” is important: the support clock is tied to that launch point, not to the date an individual retailer sells you a unit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Samsung also warns that update timing varies by device model, network provider and market. A carrier-branded version can therefore receive a release later than an unlocked model, even though both fall under the same long-term policy.

S24 or S25?

Decision Prefer Galaxy S24 when… Prefer Galaxy S25 when…
Support target You want the seven-generation/seven-year policy on an earlier flagship generation. You want the same class of commitment starting with the newer global launch.
Purchase timing You find a locally supported S24 with a warranty that meets your needs. You are buying near the S25 launch cycle and want the newest model.
Update expectations You can accept Samsung’s model, carrier and market scheduling differences. You can accept the same scheduling caveat while starting from a newer device.

The manufacturer information does not state prices, performance differences, battery life, camera results or local stock between the two generations. Make those decisions from the exact regional specification and retailer listing rather than assuming the newer model is automatically better value.

Fairphone 5: the longest stated support and the repair-first option

Support commitment

Fairphone says the Fairphone 5 has at least eight years of guaranteed software support and includes five major Android updates. That is the longest stated support period in this comparison. The wording “at least” leaves open the possibility of support beyond eight years, but you should treat eight years as the guaranteed minimum.

Fairphone also advertises a five-year warranty for the Fairphone 5. A long warranty and long software policy address different risks: the warranty concerns defects and covered hardware issues, while software support concerns operating-system and security maintenance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why repairability changes the ownership calculation

A phone cannot deliver its theoretical software life if a failed battery, port or screen makes it uneconomical to keep. Fairphone positions the Fairphone 5 around repairability, making it the natural choice for readers who want to replace individual components instead of replacing the entire handset.

  • Connectivity technology : Bluetooth
  • Display.size : 6.7 inches
  • Memory storage capacity : 128.0 GB
  • Operating system : Android 13.0

Repairability still has practical limits. Parts availability, repair instructions, local labor and the specific damage all affect the real cost. Check which components are sold in your country and whether an authorized repair route exists before assuming every repair will be simple or inexpensive.

Who should choose it?

  • Choose Fairphone 5 if keeping a phone for eight years or more is your primary objective.
  • Choose it if a five-year warranty is more valuable to you than having the largest possible flagship ecosystem.
  • Choose it if you are willing to verify local network compatibility and parts access.
  • Do not choose it solely because “eight years” sounds longer; confirm that its hardware, camera, performance and app requirements suit you for the entire ownership period.

OnePlus: evaluate the exact model, not the logo

OnePlus publishes a minimum three-year security-update period for smartphones and tablets. That is a floor, not proof that every device stops at three years, but it is also not equivalent to Google’s, Samsung’s or Fairphone’s named long-term commitments.

OnePlus therefore belongs in a model-by-model check. Open the support or product page for the exact phone, record the promised security end date and count any separately stated Android upgrades. Do not infer the policy for a new model from an older OnePlus phone, and do not assume that a “flagship” label guarantees seven years.

OnePlus buying checklist

  1. Identify the precise model number and regional version.
  2. Find the manufacturer’s support-policy statement for that model.
  3. Write down the security-support end date or minimum period.
  4. Record the number of promised Android upgrades separately.
  5. Check whether your carrier and country receive the same variant and update schedule.
  6. Compare the result with the seven-year Pixel and Samsung commitments before deciding that a lower purchase price is worth a shorter support horizon.

How to compare support claims correctly

1. Start with the security end point

Security patches protect accounts, payments, messages and other sensitive data. A phone with many Android upgrades but a short security period may be less suitable for long ownership than a phone with fewer feature changes but a longer security commitment.

2. Count major Android versions

“Seven years of software” and “seven generations of OS upgrades” are not interchangeable phrases. Google’s Pixel announcement groups Android updates, security upgrades and feature drops into seven years. Samsung separately states seven OS generations and seven years of security updates. Fairphone states at least eight years of software support but five major Android updates.

3. Identify when the clock starts

Samsung explicitly anchors the S25 policy to the global launch date. For any other model, look for the manufacturer’s stated starting point rather than assuming it begins on your purchase date.

4. Check rollout conditions

Carrier certification, regional firmware and model variants can change when an update arrives. Samsung’s published caveat is explicit, and the same practical check is sensible for every brand: verify the unlocked or carrier version sold where you live.

Choosing by priority

Best overall for straightforward long support: Pixel 8 or 8 Pro

Pick a Pixel 8 model when you want one clear seven-year commitment that includes Android releases, security upgrades and feature drops, without having to interpret a more complicated model matrix.

Best for a broad flagship ecosystem: Galaxy S24 or S25

Pick Samsung when seven OS generations and seven security years are important and you value a large device ecosystem or local Samsung service presence. Select between S24 and S25 based on launch timing, regional price and the specific hardware you need; the support class is seven years for both named series.

Best for maximum stated support and repairability: Fairphone 5

Pick Fairphone 5 when the guaranteed minimum of eight software-support years, five major Android updates, repair-focused design and five-year warranty outweigh the advantages of a mainstream flagship ecosystem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best only after model verification: OnePlus

Pick OnePlus only after the exact model’s published policy exceeds or meets your target. The company’s three-year minimum security period is materially shorter than the named commitments above.

Best Value
Google Pixel 8 Pro, 256GB, Blue - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Google Pixel 8 Pro featuring a large 6.7-inch Super Actua display, offering exceptional brightness levels, enhanced HDR, and improved visibility even in direct sunlight, powered by the Tensor G3 processor for advanced AI-driven performance.
  • Pro-level triple-camera array, including a 50MP main sensor, 48MP ultrawide lens, and 48MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom, supported by Pro Controls for manual adjustments such as ISO, focus, and shutter speed.
  • Advanced on-device AI features, enabling real-time photo enhancement, voice isolation, and improved background separation for both photos and videos without cloud processing.
  • Dedicated temperature sensor built into the rear camera bar, allowing contactless measurements for supported surfaces and materials.
  • Seven years of OS updates, security patches, and feature drops, offering one of the longest support lifecycles available on any flagship smartphone.

Practical checks before you buy

  • Confirm the exact model and region: support can differ between variants, carriers and countries.
  • Save the policy page: retain a copy of the manufacturer’s support wording and launch date for your model.
  • Ask the carrier about update handling: especially if you are buying a network-branded device.
  • Check warranty duration and exclusions: a long software policy does not automatically mean a long hardware warranty.
  • Check repair routes: find battery, screen and charging-port service options before purchase.
  • Plan battery replacement: expect a battery to wear before the software promise ends, even if the phone remains supported.
  • Budget for storage: long ownership means more photos, app data and offline files; choose capacity accordingly.
  • Verify app and network requirements: banking, work and carrier apps may impose their own compatibility rules.

Common mistakes to avoid

Confusing security years with Android-version years

Fairphone’s five major Android updates are not five years of security support; its separate guarantee is at least eight years of software support. Samsung’s seven OS generations are not merely seven security patches. Keep the two figures in separate columns when comparing phones.

Treating a company-wide minimum as a model guarantee

OnePlus’s three-year minimum applies as a published baseline for smartphones and tablets. It does not tell you that every model receives exactly three years, nor does it establish a seven-year commitment. Read the model page.

Assuming launch-day updates everywhere

Samsung explicitly says timing varies by device model, network provider and market. A long support window does not guarantee simultaneous rollout in every country.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring physical maintenance

Software support cannot rescue a phone that has an unavailable battery or uneconomical screen repair. Include warranty and parts access in the purchase decision, not as an afterthought.

Final decision guide

If your first question is “Which phone gets updates the longest?”, Fairphone 5 has the longest stated minimum at eight years. If you want the most conventional flagship experience with a clear seven-year pledge, choose Pixel 8/8 Pro or Galaxy S24/S25. If repairability and warranty are central, Fairphone 5 is the distinctive option. If you are considering OnePlus, proceed only after verifying the exact device’s security and Android-update terms.
