A heatmap turns many visitor interactions into a visual layer over a page. Click maps show where people select links, buttons, images or other elements. Scroll maps show how far visitors reach. Movement maps approximate pointer activity, while attention maps attempt to show which areas receive sustained visual interest. These are different measurements: a frequently clicked navigation link is not automatically the part of the page that receives the most attention.

Session recordings add a chronological view of individual visits. They can reveal hesitation, repeated taps, dead clicks, unexpected scrolling and the sequence that precedes a conversion or abandonment. Engagement metrics can aggregate unusual behaviour; Microsoft Clarity specifically advertises rage-click signals in its WordPress integration update.
Heatmaps are observational, not explanations. A bright area tells you that an interaction occurred, not why. Pair a visual pattern with page analytics, a clearly defined conversion event, a usability review or a survey response before changing a checkout, landing page or form.
Microsoft Clarity: the best free starting point
What the WordPress integration provides
Microsoft’s official update dated July 30, 2025 says the integration includes “built-in heatmaps, session recordings, and engagement metrics like rage clicks.” It directs WordPress users to install the Clarity plugin from the WordPress admin panel. UXHeat’s 2026 comparison describes the plugin as a one-click installation and lists an unlimited free plan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThat combination makes Clarity the default recommendation when you need broad behavioural coverage without a recurring software bill. Unlimited sessions are particularly useful on sites whose traffic varies sharply by month: you are less likely to lose the weeks that contain a campaign spike or a seasonal failure.
When Clarity is the right fit
- You want heatmaps and recordings before committing budget.
- You need to investigate rage clicks, dead ends or confusing layouts across many sessions.
- You can operate a separate survey or experimentation system when those functions are required.
Where to be cautious
An unlimited free plan does not remove implementation work. You still need to decide which pages to track, obtain any consent required in your jurisdiction, mask sensitive fields and set an internal retention policy. Clarity is a strong observation layer; Microsoft’s July 30, 2025 update and UXHeat’s 2026 comparison do not establish that it supplies the survey, form-specific or native A/B-testing workflows offered by the specialised tools below.
Crazy Egg: visual reports plus conversion experiments
Capabilities and plan boundaries
Crazy Egg is the clearest choice when a heatmap is only one part of a conversion-optimization program. Its reports cover heatmaps and recordings, while the product information also lists surveys, conversion tracking, funnel reports and AI analysis for heatmaps and recordings. A/B testing is added on the Plus and Pro tiers, so do not assume that the entry plan includes experiments.

- SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
The official Starter plan is listed at $29 per month, billed annually. That price includes 5,000 tracked pageviews per month, five heatmap reports, 50 recordings per month, six months of recording storage, unlimited conversion tracking and funnel reports, unlimited surveys and responses and AI analysis for heatmaps and recordings. Plus and Pro raise limits and add A/B testing. These are plan figures published for 2026 pricing and should be rechecked before purchase because limits and packaging can change.

Choose it when your team needs to move from “Where did people click?” to “Which variant produces more completed goals?” The funnel and conversion features let you define the outcome before interpreting a bright or cold region on a page. Surveys can collect the visitor’s stated reason, which helps distinguish a visual problem from an offer, pricing or trust problem.
Traffic-fit check
Estimate monthly pageviews before selecting a tier. If the Starter allowance is routinely exceeded, recordings or reports may be sampled, capped or require an upgrade according to the current service terms. Keep the pageview allowance, report count and recording retention in your purchasing notes rather than treating the monthly price as the complete cost.
Hotjar: choose it when feedback is central
UXHeat’s 2026 comparison positions Hotjar around surveys together with heatmaps and identifies a one-click WordPress installation path. That makes it a sensible candidate for teams that need visitors to explain friction, not merely display where interactions cluster.
Good use cases
- Collecting an open-ended response after a visitor encounters a confusing page.
- Combining a visual pattern with direct feedback before redesigning content.
- Giving a research or support team a feedback workflow alongside behavioural views.
Verify the commercial and ownership details
Current ownership, plan limits and pricing are time-sensitive. Confirm them in the vendor’s current documentation before publishing a comparison, signing a contract or promising a recording quota to stakeholders. UXHeat’s 2026 comparison identifies product fit and a WordPress path, but it does not establish a current set of free-session, retention or survey-response limits.
Mouseflow: the specialist option for form diagnosis
UXHeat lists Mouseflow as a WordPress-installable option focused on form analytics, and WPNeon identifies it for seeing which form field people abandon. That focus matters when a page receives traffic but a registration, quote or checkout form does not finish.
Rank #3
- Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
How to use form analytics well
- Define the successful submission and the form version being evaluated.
- Review the abandonment rate by field rather than treating the entire form as one event.
- Compare abandonment with validation errors, required-field wording and mobile layout.
- Watch a sample of recordings to distinguish a confusing field from a technical failure.
- Make one controlled change, then measure the same completion event again.
UXHeat’s 2026 comparison and WPNeon’s description do not establish Mouseflow’s current recording quotas, storage period or price. Treat those as purchase checks, not assumptions. If your central question is survey response or A/B-test lift rather than field abandonment, another option may fit the workflow better.
Nelio A/B Testing: a WordPress-native experimentation workflow
WordPress.org describes Nelio A/B Testing as a conversion-optimization plugin and associates it with A/B testing and heatmaps. It is the clearest native-WordPress choice for teams that want tests and heatmap evidence managed in the dashboard instead of coordinating a separate analytics service.
When native administration wins
- Your editors already work in WordPress and need experiment controls close to page and post management.
- You want the test hypothesis, variant and conversion goal documented in the same operating environment.
- Keeping implementation inside the content-management workflow is more important than selecting a broad standalone analytics suite.
Check the current edition, supported experiment types, traffic allocation controls and reporting limits before deployment. WordPress.org’s listing confirms the conversion-optimization positioning and the association with A/B testing and heatmaps, but it does not provide a current price or quota table.
Other candidates worth a deliberate check
The 2026 UXHeat comparison also lists Lucky Orange, Aurora Heatmap, Plerdy and UserFeedback. They may be appropriate for a particular budget or reporting preference, but the comparison does not provide a comparable set of prices, retention rules, integrations or feature limits. Recheck each vendor’s current WordPress documentation before treating any of them as a finalist.

How to install a heatmap plugin in WordPress
The exact authorization screen varies by service, but the WordPress workflow is consistent. Take a backup or use a staging site before adding tracking code to a high-value store or marketing site.
- Sign in with an administrator account and open
Plugins > Add New. - Search for the plugin name. Confirm the author and spelling before installing; similarly named analytics plugins are not interchangeable.
- Select Install Now, then Activate.
- Open the new plugin settings page or follow its setup notice. Connect the vendor account or create one when prompted.
- Choose the site or project that should receive this WordPress installation. Do not connect a staging site to production reporting unless that is intentional.
- Configure consent, masking and exclusions before sending visitor data. Exclude account, password, payment and other sensitive fields where the service provides controls.
- Save the settings, visit a page in a private browser window and confirm that a test visit appears in the vendor dashboard. Allow for processing time stated by the service.
- Record the installation date, tracking scope, account owner and retention decision in your site documentation.
How to track clicks and scrolls without misreading the result
Start with a question
Write a measurable question such as “Do mobile visitors reach the pricing comparison?” or “Are people clicking the non-clickable hero image instead of the sign-up button?” A generic request to “see the heatmap” produces attractive pictures but weak decisions.

Choose the page set
Track a representative template: a landing page, an article, a product detail page and the checkout or lead form when relevant. A single unusually popular page can dominate a site-wide view and hide problems elsewhere.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Segment before changing the design
Separate mobile and desktop behaviour, new and returning visitors, traffic sources and completed versus abandoned sessions when the tool allows it. A scroll depth that is healthy on a long desktop article may be poor on a short mobile product page; combining them can conceal the difference.
Validate the implementation
Use a controlled test visit to confirm that clicks and scrolling are recorded on the intended template. Check that cached pages, consent banners, single-page navigation and dynamically loaded forms do not prevent the tracking script from seeing the interaction. If the map is empty, first rule out a connection or consent issue before redesigning the page.
Best approach for WooCommerce stores
No single “best WooCommerce plugin” is identified in the cited product listings. Match the store problem to the tool: Clarity is the broad no-cost starting layer; Crazy Egg is the better fit when conversion funnels, surveys and experiments matter; Mouseflow is the specialist direction when checkout or account forms lose people at a particular field; and Nelio A/B Testing suits a team that wants experimentation managed in WordPress.
For a store, define events before enabling tracking: product selection, add to cart, checkout start, payment step and completed order. Heatmaps can show where shoppers interact, but they do not replace transaction analytics. Keep payment fields and personally identifiable information masked, and test consent and caching behaviour on both product and checkout templates.
Privacy, security and performance checks
Data minimization
Heatmaps and recordings can capture text, URLs, element labels and form interactions. Review the vendor’s masking defaults and explicitly protect passwords, payment data, health information, private messages and account details. A visual report is not harmless simply because it contains no typed words; URLs and identifiers can also be sensitive.
Consent and regional processing
Determine whether your legal basis requires consent before the script loads, whether regional processing is available and how deletion requests are handled. Document the vendor, purpose, retention period and categories of data in your privacy notice. The decision guide specifically calls out masking, retention and regional processing as checks for every vendor.

Performance and reliability
Any tracking script can affect loading, execution and caching behaviour. Test a representative page on a mobile connection before and after activation. Check whether the plugin injects the script on every page or permits exclusions. If a store relies on a performance budget, include recording and survey scripts in that budget rather than measuring only the WordPress plugin’s file size.
Costs and limits to plan for
| Option | Published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Clarity | Unlimited free plan listed by UXHeat in 2026 | Useful for variable or growing traffic; verify privacy and retention settings separately |
| Crazy Egg Starter | $29/month billed annually; 5,000 tracked pageviews/month; five heatmap reports; 50 recordings/month; six months of recording storage; unlimited conversion tracking and funnel reports; unlimited surveys and responses | Starter is a defined allowance, not unlimited tracking; Plus and Pro add higher limits and A/B testing |
| Hotjar | Current price and limits not published in the cited material | Check the vendor’s current plans before comparing total cost |
| Mouseflow | Current price and limits not published in the cited material | Check recording and form-analytics allowances against traffic |
| Nelio A/B Testing | Current price and limits not published in the cited material | Check edition, experiment and reporting limits |
Calculate total cost from your actual traffic and required retention, not from the headline monthly number alone. Include higher tiers, consent-management work, implementation time and the operational cost of reviewing recordings.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Troubleshooting common failures
No sessions or an empty heatmap
- Confirm the plugin is active on the production site, not only on staging.
- Check that the account is connected to the correct project.
- Complete a test visit after accepting any required consent banner.
- Inspect caching, script optimization and content-security settings that may block the tracker.
- Wait for the service’s processing interval before concluding that collection failed.
Clicks appear on the wrong element
Responsive layouts, duplicated buttons and dynamically generated selectors can change what a report groups together. Compare the map with the page version shown during the visit, then annotate template changes before comparing periods.
Recordings expose sensitive information
Pause collection if masking is not working. Configure field and text masking, exclude the affected route and delete captured data according to the service’s controls before resuming. Do not publish a recording internally as an example until its URL, text and form values have been reviewed.
Pages slow down after activation
Measure the script’s impact on a clean mobile test, then limit tracking to the templates that answer your question. Review consent-triggered loading, deferment and exclusions with the site’s performance owner. Removing a redundant analytics script is usually safer than stacking multiple recorders for the same page.
A simple selection checklist
- Start with the business question: layout friction, feedback, form abandonment or experimentation.
- Estimate monthly pageviews and the number of recordings or reports you will actually review.
- Choose Clarity for broad free observation unless a specialised workflow is essential.
- Choose Crazy Egg for visual reports tied to funnels, surveys and paid experimentation.
- Choose Hotjar when survey responses are the primary missing evidence.
- Choose Mouseflow when a particular form field is the suspected failure point.
- Choose Nelio A/B Testing when tests and heatmaps must remain in WordPress.
- Before launch, approve masking, consent, retention, regional processing and performance behaviour.
- Define one conversion event and one follow-up action for every heatmap review.
For most sites, install Microsoft Clarity first and use its heatmaps and recordings to locate the highest-value problem. Add a specialised tool only when you can name the missing capability—survey feedback, field-level form analysis, conversion experiments or a WordPress-native workflow—and have confirmed its current limits and privacy terms.
