The right choice depends on where you listen, how long you wear them, whether you need effective noise cancellation or clear calls, which devices you own, and whether you prefer a portable wireless design or a wired, open-back presentation at home. For most travelers and commuters, the Sony WH-1000XM6 is the strongest premium all-rounder on current guide evidence. Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) are a better comfort-focused alternative for many listeners, while Apple AirPods Max 2 make the most sense for people invested in compatible Apple devices. Quiet rooms open the door to wired or open-back headphones that trade isolation and portability for a more spacious presentation.

How to choose: decide the environment before the model
1. Noisy commute, flights and shared offices
Choose a closed-back wireless over-ear model with effective ANC when low-frequency engine, train or HVAC noise is your main problem. The Sony WH-1000XM6 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) are the clearest premium candidates in the current guides. ANC reduces ambient sound electronically; it does not make every voice disappear, and it is not hearing protection.

2. Frequent calls and online meetings
Give the microphone equal weight to music quality. RTINGS specifically credits the Sony with a microphone and rates the Bose microphone system more weakly by comparison. If calls are central to your day, read the microphone assessment rather than assuming that a high price guarantees broadcast-quality speech in wind or traffic.
3. Long listening sessions
Fit determines whether a specification matters after the first hour. Check the clamp, headband pressure, pad depth, heat and total weight. RTINGS reports that the Bose has more generous headband and earcup padding than the Sony, while the Sony’s shallow pads may bother listeners whose ears need more room. A comfortable model that you can wear for a whole workday is more useful than a technically stronger model that you remove after 30 minutes.
4. Apple-device households
AirPods Max 2 are aimed at listeners who already use compatible Apple devices and value automatic switching and strong isolation. RTINGS notes that some features require compatible Apple hardware. If your phones, tablets and computers span multiple platforms, compare codec support and standard Bluetooth behavior instead of paying for ecosystem features you cannot use.

5. Quiet home listening
Wired and open-back headphones deserve consideration when you do not need ANC, a microphone or all-day portability. Open-back ear cups allow air and sound to pass through the enclosure, which can produce a spacious presentation. The same construction leaks your music into the room and lets household noise in, so it is a poor fit for a shared office, library or bed-side listening when someone else is sleeping.
What active noise cancellation, isolation and transparency actually do
Active noise cancellation
Bose explains ANC as a system that uses microphones to detect ambient sound and produces an opposing signal to reduce what you hear. It is most useful against relatively steady, low-frequency noise such as aircraft or train rumble. ANC performance varies by fit, seal, frequency and the model’s processing; a poor seal can undermine an otherwise strong system.

- LONG BATTERY LIFE: With up to 50-hour battery life and quick charging, you’ll have enough power for multi-day road trips and long festival weekends.(USB Type-C Cable included)
- HIGH QUALITY SOUND: Great sound quality customizable to your music preference with EQ Custom on the Sony | Headphones Connect App.
- LIGHT & COMFORTABLE: The lightweight build and swivel earcups gently slip on and off, while the adjustable headband, cushion and soft ear pads give you all-day comfort.
- CRYSTAL CLEAR CALLS: A built-in microphone provides you with hands-free calling. No need to even take your phone from your pocket.
- MULTIPOINT CONNECTION: Quickly switch between two devices at once.
Passive isolation
Passive isolation comes from the physical ear cups and pads blocking sound. It works without battery power and also helps with higher-frequency sounds. A tight seal can improve isolation but increase clamp pressure, so judge it together with comfort rather than as a standalone number.
Transparency and Aware modes
Bose’s Aware Mode feeds selected outside sound through the headphones so you can hear announcements or speak without removing them. That is different from turning ANC off: transparency is an intentional listening mode, while passive isolation is simply the physical result of the ear cups. Test both modes before a trip, because the balance between outside sound and your music is a personal preference.

Sony WH-1000XM6: the premium wireless all-rounder
RTINGS’ 2026 over-ear guide names the Sony WH-1000XM6 its best over-ear selection, citing strong noise cancellation, a microphone, more than 31 hours of runtime with ANC enabled in its assessment and LDAC support. What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 guide also places it among the leading premium wireless over-ear headphones and lists SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 codec support, USB-C charging and a 30-hour battery specification.
The two battery figures should not be treated as contradictory laboratory results. “Over 31 hours” is RTINGS’ test assessment with ANC on; “30 hours” is the battery specification listed by What Hi-Fi?. Different test methods, firmware and playback conditions can produce different results. Use them as an indication of long runtime, not as a promise that every listener will receive one exact number.
Why it works for travel
- Strong ANC is suited to persistent transport and office noise.
- LDAC support gives compatible Android or other source devices a higher-bandwidth codec option; SBC and AAC provide broader Bluetooth compatibility, while LC3 is listed for supported next-generation Bluetooth use.
- A built-in microphone makes it viable for calls as well as music.
- USB-C charging matches the connector used by many current phones and laptops.
What to check before buying
- RTINGS describes the ear pads as shallow, which may create pressure or let ears touch the interior.
- Fit and clamp are personal; try the headset with glasses, if you wear them, and for a session long enough to reveal heat or pressure.
- Confirm local price, color availability, return policy and firmware support because those details change by market.
Sony announced the WH-1000XM6 on May 16, 2025. That date identifies the generation; it is not a guarantee of current stock or the lowest local price.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen): comfort-first ANC
RTINGS compares the second-generation Bose QuietComfort Ultra favorably on padding, describing a more generous headband and earcup cushion than the Sony. Bose’s own product information explains Quiet Mode for noise cancellation and Aware Mode for hearing selected surroundings. This makes the Bose a strong alternative when physical comfort over long sessions matters more than squeezing out every microphone advantage.
Battery evidence and conditions
Bose reports up to 24 hours with Immersive Audio off and up to 18 hours with Immersive Audio on. Those figures come from Bose testing in April 2025 with Quiet Mode, A2DP Bluetooth streaming, playback at 75 dB and other controlled conditions. They are manufacturer results for the Bose model, not a cross-brand test against Sony or Apple.
| Model and source | Runtime claim | Condition or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Sony WH-1000XM6 — RTINGS (2026) | Over 31 hours | RTINGS assessment with ANC on |
| Sony WH-1000XM6 — What Hi-Fi? (2026) | 30 hours | Listed battery specification; test method is not presented as identical to RTINGS |
| Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) — Bose (April 2025 test) | Up to 24 hours | Immersive Audio off; Quiet Mode, A2DP Bluetooth streaming, 75 dB playback and controlled conditions |
| Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) — Bose (April 2025 test) | Up to 18 hours | Immersive Audio on under Bose’s controlled conditions |
Important limitation
RTINGS says the Bose cannot be used passively. If the battery is empty, you cannot rely on it as a conventional wired headphone in the same way as a model designed for passive operation. That matters to frequent travelers who want a no-battery fallback on long journeys.
Apple AirPods Max 2: best when your devices are Apple
RTINGS highlights strong noise isolation and convenient device switching for AirPods Max 2. Those benefits are most valuable when your daily devices are compatible Apple products and you want ecosystem behavior without manually reconnecting each time.
Trade-offs to weigh
- RTINGS describes the AirPods Max 2 as heavier than the Sony. Weight becomes more noticeable during multi-hour sessions, especially if the headband or clamp does not suit you.
- The included case offers little protection, so frequent travelers should consider how the headphones will be packed and protected.
- Some features require compatible Apple devices. On mixed-device households, verify exactly which functions remain available outside that ecosystem.
Choose this model for integration and switching convenience, not because one ecosystem product is universally superior in sound, comfort or battery life. The available comparison does not establish a directly comparable runtime figure for AirPods Max 2, so do not infer one from the Sony or Bose numbers.

Wired and open-back headphones for home
Wireless ANC headphones solve portability and environmental noise. At home, those priorities may be less important than a direct wired connection, a particular sound presentation or the comfort of an open enclosure. What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 guide separates open-back and closed-back designs and positions wired/open-back pairs primarily for home listening.
Choose open-back when
- You listen in a quiet private room.
- You want a more open, room-like presentation rather than a sealed-in sound.
- You do not need ANC, wireless freedom or strong outside isolation.
Choose closed-back or wireless when
- Other people are nearby and music leakage would be disruptive.
- You need to block household noise or carry the headphones outside.
- You want Bluetooth convenience, a microphone or transparency controls.
Sound leakage is not a minor footnote: an open-back pair can be audible to someone sitting nearby, and outside noise remains audible to you. Match the design to the room before judging its sound quality.
Codecs, connections and device compatibility
Codec support affects how Bluetooth audio is transmitted, but it does not by itself predict comfort, ANC quality or call performance. The Sony WH-1000XM6 is listed with SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3. LDAC is useful only when both the source device and the headphone connection support it; otherwise the link falls back to an available codec. Apple-oriented features on AirPods Max 2 depend on compatible Apple devices, while Bose’s published battery test specifies A2DP Bluetooth streaming.
Before you order, check these four points
- List every source you will use: phone, laptop, tablet, game system and airplane entertainment system.
- Confirm the source supports the codec or ecosystem feature you care about; a codec in the headphone specification is not enough.
- Decide whether you need a wired fallback. Bose’s second-generation QuietComfort Ultra cannot operate passively, so battery exhaustion changes how you use it.
- Check connector and adapter needs. Sony lists USB-C charging, but charging and audio input are separate questions; verify the product’s supported wired modes for your exact setup.
Comfort: a practical fit checklist
Manufacturers cannot reduce comfort to one specification because head shape, glasses, hair and listening time vary. Use this checklist when trying headphones in a shop or during a return period.
- Pad depth: your ears should not press against the inner grille. This is especially relevant to the shallow Sony pads noted by RTINGS.
- Clamp: the cups should seal without creating a headache after 30–60 minutes.
- Headband pressure: move the band slightly forward and back; pressure concentrated at one spot is a warning sign.
- Weight: compare the feel after an extended session, not just when you first lift the box. RTINGS identifies AirPods Max 2 as heavier than Sony.
- Heat and seal: dense pads can become warm, while a loose seal reduces passive isolation and ANC effectiveness.
- Glasses and hair: check whether the frame arms or hair break the seal.
If buying online, confirm the return window and whether opened headphones can be returned. Fit is one of the few decisive factors that specifications cannot settle for you.

Microphones, calls and transparency in real life
A headphone can sound excellent and still be a poor call headset. RTINGS credits the Sony with a microphone and reports a weaker microphone system for the Bose in its comparison. That distinction matters in traffic, windy streets and open offices, where microphone processing has to separate speech from background sound.
Use transparency or Aware mode when you need to hear announcements or a colleague. ANC and transparency solve opposite problems: ANC reduces outside sound, while transparency deliberately brings selected outside sound into your mix. Neither mode replaces situational awareness in traffic or a certified hearing-protection device in hazardous noise.
Portability, cases and battery planning
Portability is more than whether a headset is wireless. Consider how the cups fold or swivel, how much protection the case provides and whether the design fits your everyday bag. RTINGS specifically says the AirPods Max 2 case offers little protection, a meaningful drawback for frequent flyers. Sony’s USB-C charging and the long runtime figures cited by RTINGS and What Hi-Fi? make it a practical travel candidate, but actual endurance still depends on volume, codec, ANC and other settings.

- Charge before leaving and carry the correct USB-C cable for the model.
- Enable ANC only when you need it if maximizing runtime is more important than blocking every sound.
- Keep a wired or alternate listening plan for flights and dead-battery situations; this is particularly important with the Bose because it cannot be used passively.
- Store the headset in its case and check how well that case protects the ear cups, especially with AirPods Max 2.
Price, availability and discounted previous generations
Current prices and stock are volatile by country, retailer and color. What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 guide notes that discounted preceding generations can remain worth considering, but a discount is not automatically a bargain: compare the older model’s comfort, codec support, battery behavior, firmware status and warranty with the current generation.
Set a budget after identifying the feature that matters most. Paying for premium ANC is difficult to justify if you listen only in a quiet room; conversely, a cheaper model may cost more in frustration if its microphone, fit or isolation fails on every commute. Verify the local price at checkout and read the seller’s return and warranty terms.
Quick Recap
A buying decision you can complete in ten minutes
- Write the dominant environment: train, airplane, office, home studio, bedroom or mixed use.
- Rank two priorities: ANC, comfort, calls, Apple switching, portability, sound presentation or wired reliability.
- Eliminate mismatches: remove open-back models if leakage is unacceptable; remove Bose if passive wired use is essential; remove AirPods Max 2 if you do not use compatible Apple devices.
- Compare fit evidence: account for Sony’s shallow pads, Bose’s more generous padding and AirPods Max 2’s greater weight.
- Check battery evidence correctly: treat the cited Sony and Bose figures as measurements with different conditions, not a single standardized ranking.
- Confirm the practical details: codec compatibility, charging connector, case protection, return policy, local availability and current price.
- Test the likely winner: wear it for at least 30 minutes with your usual glasses, volume and listening mode before committing.
Bottom line by listener type
- Most commuters and travelers: start with Sony WH-1000XM6 for its strong ANC, microphone, broad listed codec support and long runtime evidence, then verify that the shallow pads suit you.
- Listeners who prioritize plush long-session comfort: compare Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), accepting its weaker microphone assessment and lack of passive operation.
- People deeply invested in Apple hardware: consider AirPods Max 2 for isolation and device switching, while accounting for its weight, lightly protective case and device requirements.
- Private-room home listeners: investigate wired or open-back headphones when sound leakage and lack of portability are acceptable.
