For most people, the best headphones for watching TV are a dedicated wireless system: a base station connected to the TV, with headphones paired to that base. Bluetooth headphones are the alternative, but they only work well if your TV can send audio over Bluetooth and you can live with the possibility of lip-sync delay. Before you buy anything, check which audio outputs your TV actually has, because that decides which connection routes are open to you.
The “CE” in the original title does not denote a headphone category or technical class, so this guide covers consumer headphones for television viewing in general.

Check your TV’s audio outputs first
Look at the back and sides of the TV and in its sound settings menu. Port labels and menu names vary by brand, but you are generally looking for one of the following:

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- A 3.5 mm headphone jack (sometimes labelled “headphone out” or “headphones”). This allows a direct wired connection, and it is also the connection most transmitter bases use.
- A digital optical output (TOSLINK). Some transmitter bases accept an optical input, which can be a cleaner digital route than an analogue one.
- Stereo RCA outputs (usually red and white). These can be bridged to a 3.5 mm plug with an RCA-to-3.5 mm adapter, but only if the TV actually has those outputs and they are enabled in its settings.
- Bluetooth audio output. Some TVs can send sound to Bluetooth headphones. Confirm this in the TV’s sound settings rather than assuming it.
An adapter solves a port mismatch, not a missing output. If the TV has no audio output of any kind, no adapter or headphone will help, and a different route (such as a soundbar with its own wireless headphone support) would be needed.

Dedicated transmitter systems or Bluetooth headphones
These are the two routes most buyers will compare. The TechRadar France guide “Les meilleurs casques et écouteurs pour écouter la télévision sans déranger” presents wireless transmitter systems as one way to avoid the latency often associated with ordinary Bluetooth headphones. That is general guidance, not a guarantee; the exact TV and headphone pairing determines the result.
| Factor | Dedicated transmitter system | Bluetooth headphones |
|---|---|---|
| How it connects | A base plugs into the TV (for example by 3.5 mm or optical input) and the headphones pair with that base | The TV must offer Bluetooth audio output, and the headphones pair directly with it |
| Audio delay | Presented in the guide as a way to avoid typical Bluetooth latency; check with your own TV before buying | Can introduce lip-sync delay; not established for every TV or model |
| Multiple listeners | Some systems allow simultaneous listening on several headphones, according to the guide | Not stated; depends on the TV’s Bluetooth implementation |
| Best fit | Households that want reliable sync and a dedicated listening setup | Viewers who already have Bluetooth headphones and a TV with Bluetooth output |
What matters over a long viewing session
- Dialogue clarity. Speech is the part of the soundtrack most viewers miss when it is muffled. Headphone specifications rarely quantify this, so look for reviewer testing of voices, or try a model before committing.
- Latency. A few hundred milliseconds of delay makes dialogue look out of sync with mouths on screen. A transmitter system or a wired connection avoids most of this.
- Comfort. Weight, clamping force, and headband pressure matter more than most buyers expect once a film runs past two hours. A TechRadar France reviewer, Emmanuelle Soubelet (“Rédactrice”), puts it this way: “Le confort est primordial lorsque vous regardez un film ou une émission avec des écouteurs ou un casque.” In English: comfort is essential when you watch a film or show with earphones or headphones.
- Range. Wireless range is usually stated as line-of-sight. Walls and furniture reduce it, so a figure of 10 m or 30 m is a best-case number for an open room.
- Battery runtime and charging. Check whether the battery is replaceable and how it charges, since a headphone that runs out mid-series is a common frustration.
- Controls. Physical volume, balance, and tone controls are easier to use during a show than an app or a menu.

Philips SHC5200M2/12
This is the clearest example of the wired-base-plus-wireless-headphones design: the base plugs into the TV and the headphones take their signal from it. Because the Philips UK page marks it as discontinued, treat it as an illustration of the feature set to look for, and check whether a current equivalent exists in your market.
