Start by choosing the physical format—small in-ear earbuds, thin headphones that sit outside the ear, or a fabric headband with flat speakers—then consider your ear shape, pillow, and tolerance for in-ear devices. No format or product is guaranteed to feel comfortable or improve sleep for everyone.
Which headphone format suits side sleeping?
“Headphones for sleeping” can mean very different things. A small earbud may stay in place but press inside the ear; an outside-ear design avoids the canal but can still meet the pillow; a headband spreads flat speakers beneath fabric but adds warmth and material around the head. Sleep Foundation’s July 31, 2026 guide says headband and sleep-mask headphones can be exceptionally comfortable for side sleeping, while noting that earbuds may bother people who dislike the sensation in the ear canal. These are broad format trade-offs, not a guarantee for an individual sleeper.

| Format | Where it sits | Potential advantage | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sleep earbuds | In the ear canal | Compact, with no headband around the head | Whether the tip or shell creates pressure against the pillow; whether you tolerate in-ear devices |
| Thin outside-ear headphones | Against the outer ear | Avoids inserting a speaker into the canal | Whether the frame stays put and whether the pillow pushes it into the ear |
| Fabric headband with flat speakers | Speakers sit inside fabric over the ears | No conventional earbud body protruding from the ear | Headband heat, fit, speaker position, and shifting while you sleep |
How the leading options differ
The following comparison separates manufacturer specifications from details reported in Sleep Foundation’s editorial guide. Listings, specifications, and availability can change; the guide’s selections are not universal recommendations.
| Option | Format and audio | Power and connection | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| soundcore Sleep A20 | Sleep earbuds; manufacturer lists twin-seal tips, passive noise blocking, a white-noise library, and sleep-position tracking. Bluetooth mode supports audio streaming; calls are not supported. | Manufacturer lists up to 14 hours in sleep mode or 10 hours in Bluetooth mode, Bluetooth 5.3, IPX4, and 3.1 g weight. | Manufacturer specifications on its 2026 product page; not an independent test. It has no active noise cancellation. |
| SleepPhones Effortless | Two ultra-flat, removable speakers inside a fabric headband; Bluetooth pairing. | Manufacturer lists up to 24 hours of battery life, a four-hour charge, and an induction charging base. | Battery and charging details are manufacturer specifications on the Effortless product page. Comfort remains personal. |
| DUBSLABS Bedphones | Thin headphones resting on the outside of the ear; Sleep Foundation reports memory wire and thickness under a quarter inch. | The guide reports wired and wireless versions and up to 13 hours for the wireless version. | These details are reported in Sleep Foundation’s 2026 guide; check current manufacturer details and availability. |
| Ozlo Sleepbuds 2 | Sleep Foundation reports Bluetooth streaming, passive noise blocking, and an automatic switch to built-in masking sounds. | The guide reports up to 14 hours per charge and temperature and light sensors. | Sleep Foundation names them its best-overall selection, but these product details are from that editorial guide; confirm product status and specifications with the manufacturer. |
Sleep A20: compact, but still an in-ear fit
The Sleep A20 is the clearest fit among these options if you want a dedicated sleep earbud rather than a headband or an outside-ear frame. Its small stated weight and sleep-focused features do not establish how it will feel under a particular pillow. Its manufacturer describes passive blocking and white-noise playback, not ANC; Bluetooth mode is the route for streaming, and the manufacturer says calls are unsupported.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
SleepPhones Effortless: fabric between the speaker and pillow
SleepPhones places two removable, ultra-flat speakers inside a soft fabric band. That avoids a conventional earbud body in the ear, but the band itself may feel warm or shift, and the speaker position needs to remain aligned with your ears. The company also sells Classic with a cord and Wireless with a Bluetooth module; its catalog describes the speaker-and-headband format at SleepPhones. The Effortless model’s listed runtime and charging method are manufacturer claims, not comparative test results.
Bedphones: an outside-ear alternative
Bedphones rest on the outer ear rather than fitting into the canal. That may suit someone who dislikes earbuds, but “outside the ear” does not mean pressure-free: the pillow can still push a frame against the ear. Sleep Foundation’s guide reports both wired and wireless versions; verify current details directly before choosing between them.

Other editorial picks are not automatic fits
Sleep Foundation’s July 2026 guide also includes Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds as an active-noise-cancelling option and NextSense Smartbuds among its picks. Conventional earbuds such as the Bose option may provide ANC, but their shape and protrusion still need to work with a side sleeper’s ear and pillow. A guide’s selection does not establish that any particular shape will be comfortable for you.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Noise blocking, masking, and ANC are different
- Passive noise blocking comes from the physical fit of an earbud or ear tip, which reduces some sound entering the ear. The degree depends on fit and the sound itself.
- Noise masking plays audio—such as steady noise—to make other sounds less noticeable. It does not remove the disturbance, and masking content is not a treatment for a sleep disorder.
- Active noise cancellation (ANC) uses electronics to reduce some incoming sound. It is not the same as masking and does not cancel every sound in every situation.
The distinction matters when reading product claims. Sleep A20’s manufacturer specifies no ANC, while Sleep Foundation categorizes the Bose QuietComfort Ultra as an ANC pick. Bose made the distinction explicitly when it introduced its older Sleepbuds II: Bose Health Division head Steve Romine said, “Bose Sleepbuds II use advancements in our proprietary noise masking technology because covering sound — not cancelling it — is a better solution for sleeping,” in Bose’s 2020 release. That is a company executive’s view, not neutral consensus.

Why Bose Sleepbuds II are legacy context
Bose described Sleepbuds II as quarter-inch deep, designed for sleep, and capable of 10 hours of runtime; they played masking sounds rather than using ANC. Bose also reported a study with the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and UCHealth CARE Innovation Center: 100% of participants said masking worked against common disturbances, 86% said it helped them fall asleep more easily, 76% said it helped them stay asleep, and 80% reported an overall improvement in sleep quality. These are participant-reported results reported by Bose in 2020, not general clinical proof.
They are not an uncomplicated current recommendation. Bose support says Sleepbuds were discontinued in 2023 and the app was removed for download on July 21, 2025. Anyone considering a used set should check whether the required app remains available on their device and whether the product can be set up and used; prior ownership or a listing does not establish current support.

Choose by fit, not by a “best” label
- Identify the pressure point. If anything in the ear is uncomfortable, consider a headband or outside-ear format; if a band feels hot or restrictive, consider an earbud or a thin external design.
- Account for your pillow. A firm pillow may press harder on anything protruding at the ear. A softer pillow may change the pressure, but cannot guarantee comfort.
- Decide what audio you need. Check whether you want Bluetooth streaming, built-in masking sounds, or both. Do not assume a sleep-focused device supports calls or general streaming.
- Match the noise strategy to the need. Passive fit, masking playback, and ANC work differently. Do not infer that a product blocks every disturbance from a general noise-reduction claim.
- Check practical fit and power. Look at stated runtime for the mode you will use, charging requirements, wired versus wireless connection, headband heat, and whether speakers or earbuds shift when you change positions.
- Verify before buying. Confirm current model status, specifications, device compatibility, and return terms on the manufacturer’s current listing. Comfort claims on product pages are not controlled comparisons.
