The right HDMI home theater depends on your room and the signals you need it to pass—not on an “HDMI” or Atmos badge alone. A packaged 5.1 system, an Atmos soundbar package, and a receiver with separate speakers suit different setups. For 4K/120 gaming, check the exact input and passthrough specifications; for TV audio, confirm eARC on both the TV and the audio system.
What makes an HDMI home theater a good fit?
HDMI carries audio and video between devices; it does not itself improve picture or sound quality. The complete chain—source, TV, receiver or soundbar, supported formats, settings, and content—determines what you can use. Start with these questions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- What will you connect? List your TV, game console, streaming device, and disc player, and note whether you want to connect sources to the audio system or directly to the TV.
- Which video features matter? For 4K/120 gaming, verify that the relevant HDMI input and output support that mode. Check HDR formats and input count as well.
- What speaker arrangement fits? A complete 5.1 package provides separate front, center, surround, and bass channels. A soundbar with a subwoofer and rear speakers can simplify installation; a receiver-based setup offers more flexibility but needs room and setup.
- How immersive should it be? Compare discrete surround speakers with soundbar processing, and consider dialogue, bass, surround separation, Atmos effects, and music listening. Channel counts and wattage alone do not establish sound quality.
- Can the room support the setup? Account for speaker locations, wiring, available floor space, and—for upward-firing Atmos modules—the ceiling’s height and surface.
Which HDMI features should you verify?
HDMI 2.1 and 4K/120 passthrough
HDMI 2.1 is not a guarantee that every port on a device supports every advertised feature. Check the model’s port-by-port specifications, including the supported refresh rates, number of inputs, and HDR formats. If a console connects through a receiver or soundbar, that device must pass the video mode to the TV. Connecting the console directly to a compatible TV and returning audio over eARC is another possible path, provided the TV and audio system support the desired audio formats.
Yamaha lists the YHT-5960U with four HDMI inputs and one output, and specifies 4K60, 4K120 (AB), and 8K60 (B) modes, alongside Dolby Vision, HLG, BT.2020, ALLM, and VRR. These are manufacturer-listed specifications for this model; they should not be assumed for every port or generalized to other receivers. See Yamaha’s YHT-5960U specifications.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What eARC does
eARC is the HDMI return path that sends audio from a TV to a receiver or soundbar. Yamaha says eARC can carry full-resolution multichannel formats, including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD, when compatible equipment and content are used. Confirm eARC support on both the TV and the audio system, as well as support for the particular audio format you plan to play.
Atmos, 5.1, and soundbar packages: how to choose
Dolby Atmos is rendered for the playback system’s speaker configuration. It can be delivered through an enabled soundbar or an Atmos-capable receiver and speakers, but the layout and content matter. Dolby says at least two overhead-capable speakers are needed for overhead sound and recommends four for its best experience. A format label alone does not tell you how convincing the result will be in your room.

Complete 5.1 package
The Yamaha YHT-5960U is a manufacturer-described 5.1-channel package that includes a receiver, subwoofer, surround speakers, and YPAO automatic room calibration. Yamaha lists 80 watts and wireless streaming features. Its product page does not list Dolby Atmos support, so treat it as a 5.1 option, not an Atmos system. Yamaha says YPAO uses a supplied microphone to analyze room acoustics and adjust audio parameters. Specifications and features are listed on Yamaha’s YHT-5960U product page.

Soundbar with subwoofer and rear speakers
A soundbar package is generally simpler to place than a receiver and separate speaker set, while included rear speakers can provide a more discrete surround layout than the bar alone. The Samsung HW-Q990F is one example: What Hi-Fi? describes a soundbar with wireless surround speakers and a subwoofer, HDMI 2.1 passthrough up to 4K/120Hz, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision. TechRadar lists an 11.1.4 configuration, eARC output, and two HDMI 2.1 inputs. These descriptions and specifications are reported by those publications, not from independent testing here. See What Hi-Fi?’s surround-systems roundup and TechRadar’s HW-Q990F specifications.
Receiver with separate speakers
A receiver-based system makes it easier to choose speaker types and placement separately, but requires more space, wiring, and configuration. If Atmos is a priority, confirm that the receiver supports it and that the speaker layout meets the system’s requirements. Dolby says upward-firing modules work best with reflective ceilings between 2.3 and 4.3 meters (7.5–14 feet); an unsuitable ceiling can limit that approach. See Dolby’s home Atmos guidance.

You need a compatible path that supports 4K/120 from the gaming source to the TV. If the signal passes through a receiver or soundbar, its relevant ports must support that mode. If not, connecting the console directly to a compatible TV may avoid video passthrough limits; confirm that the TV’s eARC connection and the audio system can return the sound formats you need.

How to check compatibility in your setup
- Write down the source and display models. Check the console or player’s output modes and the TV’s supported inputs.
- Choose the signal route. Decide whether sources will connect to the receiver or soundbar, or directly to the TV with audio returned over eARC.
- Verify every link. Confirm the relevant HDMI modes, eARC, and audio and HDR format support for each device in the chosen route.
- Match speakers to the room. Check that the package includes the speakers you expect and that you can place them appropriately. For up-firing Atmos modules, compare ceiling conditions with Dolby’s guidance.
- Confirm the exact package locally. Check the model number, included subwoofer and surrounds, warranty, current availability, and local price with the seller.
What do reviewers’ comparisons establish?
Product comparisons can help distinguish connection options, but their listening judgments belong to the reviewers and their test rooms. What Hi-Fi?’s comparison of the Sonos Arc Ultra and JBL Bar 1000MK2 says the Sonos has eARC but no HDMI passthrough, while the JBL supports passthrough up to 4K/60Hz and Dolby Vision/HDR10+. It also describes differences in dialogue and music presentation based on its own listening tests. See What Hi-Fi?’s comparison. Check the current model specifications before relying on these connection details for a purchase.
