Ledger Nano X and Trezor Safe 5 are the strongest documented choices for storing XRP in 2026. Ledger documents XRP support in Ledger Wallet, while Trezor documents XRP support in Trezor Suite and recommends its Safe family, including Safe 5. Both keep signing keys on a physical device rather than on an ordinary internet-connected computer or phone.
The right choice depends less on a universal security ranking than on four practical questions: does your exact model and wallet software support XRP, can you verify addresses on the device, can you protect the recovery backup, and can you buy and authenticate the device through a trustworthy channel?

Quick verdict: Ledger Nano X or Trezor Safe 5?
If you want the shortest answer, choose the device whose official XRP workflow you are most comfortable operating correctly. Ledger Nano X is a good fit for someone who wants Ledger Wallet and its established mobile and desktop workflow. Trezor Safe 5 suits someone who prefers Trezor Suite and a Safe-family device with explicit XRP documentation.
| Decision point | Ledger Nano X | Trezor Safe 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Official XRP support | Ledger’s XRP documentation lists support in Ledger Wallet and names Nano X among current devices. | Trezor documents XRP in Trezor Suite and recommends Safe 5; XRP support is also documented for Safe 3 and Model T. |
| Key-protection model | Hardware-isolated private keys; Ledger’s product material uses Secure Element language. | Hardware-wallet isolation, with receiving addresses confirmed on the device in the documented workflow. |
| Software workflow | Install the official Ledger Wallet application, connect the device, and add an XRP account. | Install Trezor Suite, connect the device, activate XRP, receive funds, and verify the address on the device. |
| Best fit | Users who prefer Ledger Wallet and a mobile/desktop multi-asset workflow. | Users who prefer Trezor Suite and a Safe-family device with explicit XRP instructions. |
| Independent failure-rate or market-share evidence | Not established in the cited official material. | Not established in the cited official material. |
Neither product is a magic shield. A hardware wallet can keep the private key off the internet, but a fake device, malicious software, exposed recovery phrase, or address-verification mistake can still put XRP at risk.

What a hardware wallet does for XRP
XRP ownership is controlled by cryptographic keys. A hardware wallet generates or imports the wallet’s signing capability on a dedicated physical device and keeps the private key away from the computer or phone used to prepare transactions. The XRP Ledger documentation describes the main benefit this way: “The main benefit of using hardware wallets is that you can secure your information by disconnecting it from the internet when it’s not in use.”
In normal use, the companion application creates an unsigned transaction, sends the transaction details to the hardware wallet, and asks you to approve it. The device performs the signing operation internally. The signed transaction is then returned to the application for broadcasting. The phone or computer can be compromised without automatically revealing the private key, although malware can still try to alter transaction details or trick you into approving a bad transaction.
What the device protects
- The private key used to authorize XRP transactions is kept on the hardware wallet rather than stored as ordinary text on the connected computer.
- The device provides a separate place to inspect important transaction information, especially the receiving address, before approval.
- You can disconnect and store the device when it is not being used.
What it does not protect automatically
- A recovery phrase written down or photographed by someone else can recreate access to the wallet.
- Phishing pages can ask you to type the recovery phrase or can impersonate support.
- Malware can replace an address copied to the clipboard. You must compare the address shown by the wallet application with the address displayed on the hardware device.
- A counterfeit or tampered device can undermine the security model before setup even begins.
Compatibility is a model-and-software question
Do not treat “supports XRP” as a statement about every device from a manufacturer. Confirm both the exact hardware model and the current official wallet application. Ledger’s XRP page documents XRP accounts in Ledger Wallet and lists Nano X among supported devices. Trezor documents XRP in Trezor Suite and identifies Safe 3, Safe 5, and Model T as XRP-capable devices.

Ledger Nano X
Ledger’s official XRP material says its hardware devices work with Ledger Wallet, let you create XRP accounts, and keep private keys isolated in cold storage. For Nano X, the normal path is to initialize the device, install the official Ledger Wallet application, connect the device, and add an XRP account. Ledger also describes a mobile and desktop workflow, which can matter if you regularly move between those environments.
Ledger’s XRP page uses the wording “Keep your XRP safe by controlling your private keys.” That is a description of the control model, not an independent guarantee that every user or transaction is safe. You still need to verify addresses and protect the recovery backup.
Trezor Safe 5
Trezor’s documentation calls Safe 5 one of its best choices for XRP and confirms XRP support across the Safe family and Model T. The documented workflow uses Trezor Suite: connect and unlock the device, activate XRP, choose the receive function, and confirm the address on the device itself before giving it to the sender.

- 2 XRP COLD STORAGE COINS FOR FLEXIBLE STORAGE - This 2-pack includes two physical XRP cold storage coins, ideal for splitting holdings, keeping one as a backup, or giving one as a gift while maintaining a dedicated XRP-only storage format.
- NO ELECTRONICS FOR OFFLINE XRP STORAGE - No battery, no Bluetooth, no USB, and no firmware updates. These stainless steel XRP coins are designed for offline cold storage and keep key information separate from internet-connected devices.
- NO SEED PHRASE AND NO PIN OR PASSWORD - Ballet simplifies XRP cold storage with no 12 or 24-word seed phrase to write down and no PIN or password to remember, making setup easier for beginners and long-term holders.
- WORKS WITH BALLET CRYPTO APP FOR XRP - Use the Ballet Crypto App for iOS and Android to scan each coin, view the XRP address, load XRP, check balances, and transfer XRP through a guided workflow.
- TAMPER-EVIDENT SECURITY LAYERS - Each coin includes peel-to-reveal protection that helps provide a clear visual signal if the private key area has been accessed. Once opened to move funds out, the coin should not be reused for secure cold storage.
The device-confirmation step is important because the address displayed on the hardware wallet is the reference point you should trust. If the address on the device does not match the address shown in Trezor Suite or in the message you intend to send, stop and investigate instead of approving.

Safe 3 and Model T are also identified in Trezor’s XRP documentation. They may be reasonable alternatives when available through an authentic channel, but Safe 5 is the clearest current recommendation in the cited material. Check the manufacturer’s current compatibility page before buying because support can depend on software versions as well as hardware.

Buying an XRP hardware wallet safely
The supply chain is part of the security model. A genuine wallet obtained through an untrusted seller can arrive opened, substituted, or accompanied by a recovery phrase that someone else already knows.
- Start with the manufacturer’s official store or a reputable authorized channel. Avoid a listing whose seller identity, return history, or packaging provenance is unclear.
- Inspect the package and device before setup. Look for evidence that the box or device was opened, replaced, or altered. Do not proceed if the device arrives with a prewritten recovery phrase or a PIN you did not create.
- Use only the official wallet application. Download Ledger Wallet or Trezor Suite from the manufacturer’s official distribution path. A search-ad result, pop-up, email attachment, or unsolicited support message is not an authority.
- Initialize the device yourself. The device should generate a new recovery backup during setup. Never accept a phrase supplied by a seller, a website, or “support.”
- Check authenticity and firmware status in the official application. Follow the application’s prompts for device and firmware verification. If it reports a problem, stop and contact the manufacturer through its official support channel without disclosing the recovery phrase.
Set up Ledger Nano X for XRP
The exact labels can change as Ledger Wallet is updated, but the security decisions remain the same.
- Prepare a private setup location. Make sure no camera, screen recorder, visitor, or remote-support session can see the recovery backup.
- Install Ledger Wallet from the official source. Confirm that the application is the genuine Ledger product before connecting the device.
- Connect and initialize Nano X. Create the device PIN yourself and let the device generate a new recovery phrase. Write the phrase down exactly as displayed, in the order displayed.
- Complete the device’s backup check. The device will ask you to confirm words from the phrase. This catches transcription errors before funds are deposited.
- Finish any firmware or authenticity checks requested by Ledger Wallet. Do not bypass a warning by entering the recovery phrase into the application or a web page.
- Add an XRP account. In Ledger Wallet, choose the option to add an account, select XRP, and follow the on-screen prompts while approving only actions you recognize on Nano X.
- Copy the receive address, then verify it on Nano X. Compare the complete address shown in Ledger Wallet with the address displayed on the hardware device. A mismatch is a stop signal.
- Send a small test amount if the value and circumstances justify it. Confirm that the test arrives at the intended account before sending a larger balance. The test is an operational check, not a guarantee against every future mistake.
Set up Trezor Safe 5 for XRP
- Obtain Safe 5 through the manufacturer or an authorized source. Reject a package that appears opened or a device that arrives with a recovery phrase already prepared.
- Install Trezor Suite from the official source. Do not use a wallet application supplied by a seller, a support chat, or a random download page.
- Connect Safe 5 and complete initialization. Set your own device protection and allow the device to generate the recovery backup.
- Record and verify the recovery phrase offline. Keep it out of cameras, cloud storage, email, notes applications, and browser forms.
- Complete Trezor Suite’s device and firmware checks. Treat an unexpected warning as a reason to stop and verify the device’s provenance.
- Activate XRP in Trezor Suite. Select the XRP account option and follow the prompts shown by Suite and Safe 5.
- Choose Receive and display the address. Trezor’s documented workflow requires confirming the receiving address on the hardware device. Read the address on Safe 5 itself, not only on the computer screen.
- Match the address character by character before sharing it. If a sender has an address from an earlier transaction, compare it again; clipboard contents and saved contacts can be wrong.
Receiving and sending XRP without avoidable mistakes
Receiving XRP
- Open the official wallet application and select the XRP account.
- Use the receive function to display the address in the application and on the hardware wallet.
- Confirm that both displays match before sending the address to another person or service.
- After the transaction is sent, verify the result in the wallet application and through the transaction information available to you.
Sending XRP
- Enter the destination address manually or paste it, then compare it with a trusted copy.
- Review the amount and destination shown by the wallet application.
- Read the transaction details on the hardware wallet’s screen. Approve only when the destination and amount are what you intend.
- Never approve a transaction merely because a browser window says it is urgent, failed, or required for account recovery.
For a large transfer, use a staged process: verify the destination independently, send a test amount when practical, and keep the hardware device connected only for the approval step.

The recovery phrase is the real emergency key
The hardware device can be replaced; the recovery backup is what lets you restore access if the device is lost or damaged. Losing the device does not by itself lose the XRP when the recovery backup remains available and secret. The reverse is also true: anyone who obtains the backup can recreate access without possessing your original device.
How to handle the backup
- Write it down during initialization and check every word and its order.
- Store it offline in a place protected from unauthorized people, fire, water, and casual discovery.
- Do not photograph it, upload it to cloud storage, email it, or paste it into a password manager unless you have deliberately accepted the additional risks.
- Do not type it into a website, browser extension, customer-support form, or chat. Legitimate support should not need it.
- Consider a durable metal backup as a separate physical-security layer if the value and threat environment justify the expense.
Keep the backup separate from the hardware wallet. Someone who finds both together has a much easier path to the funds.
Authenticity, phishing and supply-chain threats
Hardware isolation only works when the device and software are trustworthy. XRP Ledger guidance highlights wallet-provider security and supply-chain attacks as relevant concerns.

- A device arrives with a recovery phrase, PIN, or setup instructions that tell you to use a predetermined phrase.
- The seller pressures you to install an unofficial application or to contact support through a private messaging account.
- The application asks for the recovery phrase to “synchronize,” “validate,” “unlock,” or “recover” the wallet.
- The hardware wallet shows a receiving address that differs from the address on the computer or phone.
- A firmware or authenticity warning is dismissed as harmless without verification.
What to do if something looks wrong
- Disconnect the device and stop approving transactions.
- Do not enter the recovery phrase anywhere to troubleshoot.
- Record the exact warning without exposing private information.
- Use the manufacturer’s official support route and describe the device state, purchase channel, and application version.
- If you believe the recovery phrase was exposed, treat the wallet as compromised and move assets to a newly initialized, authentic device after obtaining qualified help.
Costs, availability and evidence limits
The official material used for the XRP compatibility claims does not establish a single current retail price, regional tax treatment, shipping cost, or recurring discount for Nano X or Safe 5. Prices and availability can change by country and seller, so check the manufacturer’s store at the time of purchase rather than relying on an old number.
Ledger’s page reports more than 8 million customers. That is a vendor-reported figure, not an independent market-share measurement and not evidence that Ledger is safer for XRP than Trezor. Likewise, there is no independent XRP-specific failure-rate comparison in the cited official documentation. A responsible buying decision should therefore be based on documented compatibility, authentic sourcing, address-verification habits, recovery-backup discipline, and the software workflow you can operate consistently.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose Ledger Nano X if Ledger Wallet’s mobile/desktop workflow is the one you will actually use, and you are comfortable verifying XRP addresses on the device.
- Choose Trezor Safe 5 if you prefer Trezor Suite and want the Safe-family XRP workflow with explicit device-confirmed receiving instructions.
- Consider Safe 3 or Model T only after confirming current XRP support and obtaining the device through an authentic channel.
- Do not buy yet if you cannot protect a recovery phrase, inspect the supply chain, or install the official application safely. Those operational gaps matter more than a small feature difference.
The best XRP hardware wallet is the authentic, currently supported device whose recovery and address-verification process you can follow without shortcuts. On the evidence available today, Ledger Nano X and Trezor Safe 5 are the clearest documented starting points; neither removes the need for careful custody.
