Choose by the way you verify transactions, connect the device, limit software scope, and recover funds after loss or damage. COLDCARD Mk5 is the strongest fit for Bitcoin-only, air-gapped control; Trezor Safe 5 Bitcoin-only suits users who want on-device confirmation and Shamir recovery; Ledger Nano Gen5 fits broad asset and app support with a secure E-Ink touchscreen; and BitBox02 Bitcoin-only is a straightforward Bitcoin-focused alternative.
Your backup matters more than the device body. A hardware wallet keeps signing keys off your computer, but anyone who obtains the recovery words can usually recreate the wallet elsewhere. Buy from an authorized source, verify the device before use, and protect the backup as carefully as the wallet itself.

How to compare Bitcoin hardware wallets
A hardware wallet creates and stores private keys on a dedicated device and uses those keys to sign transactions. The private key should not leave the device. Your computer or phone prepares a transaction, the wallet displays important details for you to check, and the device signs only after confirmation.
Recommended Free Tools
For Bitcoin, five questions matter more than a generic feature count:
#1 Best Overall
- Can you verify the destination and amount on a trusted screen? A transaction shown only on a potentially compromised computer is not enough.
- How does it connect? USB and Bluetooth are convenient; QR or microSD workflows can keep signing data off a connected computer.
- Is it Bitcoin-only or multi-asset? Bitcoin-only firmware reduces the software scope, while multi-asset support can be useful if you hold other networks.
- How transparent and independently assessed is it? Consider open-source components, secure-element assumptions, firmware updates, and supply-chain controls.
- Can your backup be restored elsewhere? Standard 12- or 24-word backups are generally more portable than proprietary services or less widely supported share schemes.
Bitcoin.org’s hardware-wallet directory lists BitBox02, Coldcard, Passport, Ledger Nano S, and Trezor models and evaluates control, validation, transparency, environment, privacy, and fees. Those are qualitative ratings, not a controlled safety score, and there is no authoritative percentage ranking one wallet as universally safest.

COLDCARD Mk5: maximum Bitcoin-specific control
COLDCARD Mk5 is designed for Bitcoin only, which keeps its software surface focused on one network. Its defining advantage is the number of controls available to users who are comfortable with a more deliberate setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAir-gapped signing
You can move partially signed Bitcoin transactions with QR codes or microSD cards instead of connecting the signer directly to a computer. The offline device receives the transaction, displays the details for checking, signs it, and returns the signed data for broadcast. This can reduce the number of communication paths, but it adds file-handling and verification steps.
Specialized controls
- Duress PIN: A separate PIN can open a decoy wallet if you are forced to reveal access.
- Brick-me PIN: A configured PIN can make the device unusable, intended as a high-risk emergency measure.
- Anti-phishing words: Words shown during PIN entry help you detect a changed or counterfeit device interface.
- SeedXOR: A seed can be split into multiple components so that one stored component does not reveal the complete backup.
- BIP-85: The device can derive child wallet seeds for separate wallets from a master seed.
- Native multisig: Multiple signers can co-sign while remaining air-gapped.
These tools are useful only if you document the design and practice recovery. A duress wallet that you cannot open under stress, or a SeedXOR split whose components are misplaced, can create a recovery problem rather than solve one.
Who should choose it
Choose COLDCARD Mk5 if Bitcoin-only operation, QR or microSD workflows, and advanced recovery or multisig controls are your priorities. Choose another model if you need a minimal setup, broad altcoin support, or the least possible operational overhead.
Trezor Safe 5 Bitcoin-only: dedicated configuration and flexible backup
Trezor Safe 5 Bitcoin-only is aimed at users who want a Bitcoin-dedicated configuration and confirmation on the device itself. Before approving a transaction, compare the destination and amount shown on the wallet with what you intended to send.
Rank #2
Standard and Shamir recovery
The device supports a conventional 12- or 24-word recovery backup and Shamir multi-share backup. Standard words are familiar and can be restored by many compatible wallets that use the same standard. Shamir divides recovery into shares and lets you define how many shares are required, reducing the chance that one damaged or stolen sheet is enough to lose control.
Shamir is not automatically more portable. Wallets must support the same share format and recovery process, so check compatibility before relying on it as your only plan. Keep an inventory of where each share is stored and the threshold needed to recover.
Who should choose it
It suits users who want a focused Bitcoin setup, clear on-device approval, and a choice between conventional and multi-share backups. If you need QR or microSD air-gapping as a central part of your routine, a device built around that workflow may be a better match.
Ledger Nano Gen5: secure screen and broad ecosystem support
Ledger Nano Gen5 combines a secure E-Ink touchscreen with broad asset and app compatibility. The touchscreen lets you review transaction information on the device rather than trusting only the host computer.

If you hold Bitcoin alongside other supported networks, one device and its companion applications can be simpler than maintaining separate wallets. The trade-off is a larger software and app surface than a Bitcoin-only device. Install only the applications you need and keep firmware current through the official process.
Recovery phrase and optional service
Initialization generates a unique 24-word recovery phrase and provides a physical recovery sheet. An optional Ledger Recovery Key service is available as an additional recovery path. Treat the 24 words as the fundamental backup: anyone who has them can generally recreate the wallet, while the PIN protects routine access to the device itself.
Who should choose it
Choose Ledger Nano Gen5 when secure on-device review and broad ecosystem support outweigh the simplicity of a Bitcoin-only signer. If you want a fully offline QR or microSD process, look at a wallet designed around air-gapped operation instead.
BitBox02 Bitcoin-only: focused workflow with physical buttons
BitBox02 Bitcoin-only is a credible Bitcoin-focused alternative listed in Bitcoin.org’s hardware directory. Its OLED display and button-based interface show the transaction for review before signing, while the 24-word seed backup follows a familiar recovery pattern.

The simpler interface can be easier to understand than a device with many advanced modes. Conversely, users who need duress features, SeedXOR, BIP-85, or native air-gapped multisig should choose a model that explicitly provides those controls.
Which wallet fits your priorities?
Choose Bitcoin-only when reducing scope is the priority
A Bitcoin-only firmware configuration avoids installing unrelated network applications and keeps the device’s purpose narrow. COLDCARD Mk5, Trezor Safe 5 Bitcoin-only, and BitBox02 Bitcoin-only all fit this approach. It is a design preference, not a guarantee that every risk disappears.
Choose broad support when you actually need it
Ledger Nano Gen5 is the practical fit for users who need multiple assets or third-party applications. Broader support means more software to maintain, so separate high-value Bitcoin savings from experimental applications when your risk model calls for it.
Choose air-gapped signing for an offline operating procedure
QR and microSD signing are valuable when you want the signing device disconnected from the computer that creates or broadcasts transactions. They do not remove the need to verify addresses, protect the backup, or validate files and firmware. A connected workflow with careful on-device verification can still be appropriate for many users.
Choose standard words for maximum portability
Standard 12- or 24-word recovery is the easiest format to understand and test across compatible wallets. Shamir shares can improve resilience against a single lost or stolen sheet, but support is narrower. Vendor recovery services add convenience but introduce another dependency and should not replace knowledge of your underlying backup.
Recovery is the critical security decision
Trezor’s backup guidance states: “Having a secure wallet backup means you can recover your Bitcoin in case of hardware failure or device loss. The physical security of your wallet backup is even more important than that of the device itself.” That principle applies to every model here.

PIN versus recovery words
A PIN controls day-to-day access to the device. The recovery words recreate the wallet and its addresses on a replacement device or compatible software. Losing the PIN can be inconvenient; losing the words can permanently eliminate access if the original device fails. If someone copies the words, the device PIN cannot protect the funds from that person.
How to store a standard backup
- Initialize the wallet in a private location and let the device generate the words.
- Write the words in the exact order on the supplied recovery material. Do not photograph, scan, email, or type them into a computer or phone.
- Check the written copy using the device’s verification procedure before receiving significant funds.
- Store it where theft, fire, water, and casual discovery are unlikely. Tell your recovery plan to a trusted person only when necessary.
- Perform a small, controlled recovery test before treating the wallet as your sole access path. Never enter the words into an internet-connected website or unknown app.
Metal backups
A metal seed-phrase plate can be useful for durable storage, especially where paper could be damaged. Do not assume a particular plate survives a specific fire, flood, or impact unless the manufacturer publishes evidence for that exact model and test. A metal backup still needs privacy and a documented word order.

Shamir shares and COLDCARD’s SeedXOR can reduce dependence on one physical sheet. They also increase operational complexity: you must know the threshold, label shares without exposing the complete secret, and confirm that a replacement wallet supports the format. Keep instructions with the shares but never record the complete recovery secret in a single accessible location.
Safe setup and first transaction
Before opening the box
- Buy from the manufacturer’s authorized channel and inspect packaging and tamper indicators.
- Use a clean, updated computer or phone and download companion software from the manufacturer’s official site.
- Confirm the model name, firmware-signing process, and current recovery options in the documentation.
Initialize and verify
- Connect or power the device and choose the official initialization option; do not accept a prewritten seed.
- Set a PIN that is not reused elsewhere. Record the recovery words only on offline physical media.
- Use the device’s backup-check feature to confirm every word and its order.
- Install only the required Bitcoin application or account configuration.
- Receive a small amount first and verify the receiving address on the device screen, not only in the companion software.
Send Bitcoin
- Enter or scan the destination in the companion software.
- Compare the destination and amount displayed on the hardware wallet with the intended payment. Check the fee and change details when shown.
- Reject the transaction if the address or amount differs, even if the computer says it is correct.
- Approve on the device. For QR or microSD workflows, transfer only the unsigned or signed transaction data required for that step.
- After broadcast, verify the transaction ID through a trusted block explorer or your own node.
Common failure modes and fixes
The device is lost or broken
Acquire a replacement from an authorized source and restore using the correctly stored words or supported share set. A replacement device does not need to be the same brand if it supports the backup standard and derivation path used by the original wallet. Restore a small test wallet first when possible, and never reveal the words to support staff.
The computer shows a different address
Stop. Verify the address on the hardware-wallet screen and check for malware, clipboard replacement, or a compromised companion application. Do not approve based on the host display alone.
You cannot find one recovery word
Do not guess or enter partial words into online tools. Review the physical backup privately, use the wallet’s offline verification process, and check whether you created an additional passphrase or split backup. If the complete backup cannot be reconstructed and the device still works, move funds to a newly initialized wallet before the device fails.
You forgot a passphrase
A passphrase creates a different wallet from the same recovery words. The original words without the passphrase may open an empty or decoy wallet. Keep a secure, offline record of the passphrase and its exact capitalization if you choose to use one; there is generally no reset mechanism.
Firmware or app updates are offered
Use only the official companion application and verify the device’s update confirmation. Never type recovery words into an update window or website. After updating, confirm the receiving address and backup status before sending funds.
Buying checklist
- Decide whether you need Bitcoin-only operation or multiple assets.
- Choose on-device display and confirmation that you can read comfortably.
- Decide between USB or wireless convenience and QR or microSD air-gapped signing.
- Confirm the backup format: standard 12/24 words, Shamir shares, SeedXOR, or an optional recovery service.
- Check which replacement wallets can restore that backup if the original manufacturer disappears.
- Plan private storage for the words or shares before funding the wallet.
- Verify the seller, packaging, firmware, and initialization procedure.
- Budget for a durable backup medium only after you understand its limitations; a metal plate is not a substitute for secrecy.
What “safer” really means
Security is a system made of device design, firmware, supply-chain checks, transaction verification, backup storage, and your own procedures. A wallet with advanced controls can be less safe in practice if its owner cannot operate or recover it correctly. A simpler wallet can be an excellent choice when its screen, backup, and signing process are consistently used.
For a Bitcoin-only, air-gapped workflow, start with COLDCARD Mk5. For Bitcoin-only use with on-device confirmation and Shamir as an option, consider Trezor Safe 5 Bitcoin-only. For multi-asset and app breadth with a secure touchscreen, consider Ledger Nano Gen5. For a focused device with OLED and buttons and a standard 24-word backup, consider BitBox02 Bitcoin-only. In every case, protect and test the recovery plan before moving substantial Bitcoin.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Bitcoin-only hardware wallet safer than a multi-asset wallet?
Bitcoin-only firmware narrows the software scope and can simplify review, but it does not by itself guarantee safer storage. Your transaction checks, firmware process, and recovery backup still determine much of the practical risk.
Can I restore a hardware-wallet backup on another brand?
Often, standard 12- or 24-word backups can be restored by compatible wallets using the same standards and derivation path. Shamir shares, SeedXOR arrangements, passphrases, and vendor recovery services have narrower compatibility, so verify support before relying on another brand.
Should I use a metal seed-phrase backup?
Metal can protect against ordinary paper damage, but it does not make the words private and no general fire or water rating should be assumed. Choose it when its durability benefits fit your storage plan, and keep it hidden from unauthorized people.
What happens if someone sees my recovery words but not my PIN?
The PIN protects access to that physical device, while the recovery words can recreate the wallet elsewhere. Move funds to a newly initialized wallet immediately if the words may have been copied, and create a new backup.
Do I need an air-gapped wallet?
No. Air-gapped QR or microSD signing can reduce connection paths, but a conventional connection can be appropriate when you verify the destination and amount on the hardware wallet and keep the computer and firmware process trustworthy.
