For most Google Workspace organizations, buy a FIDO2 Google Titan key in the connector employees use every day: USB-C/NFC for newer fleets, or USB-A/NFC for older and mixed fleets. Titan is the most directly documented Workspace option, while a FIDO2 key from the Yubico YubiKey family is a legitimate category alternative when its exact model, connector, firmware and regional stock meet your requirements. Issue a primary key and a separately stored backup for each high-value account.

The short answer: which security key should you buy?

Choose by connector first, then confirm FIDO2 support. A key that cannot plug into an employee’s computer or communicate with the employee’s phone will create more support work than security value.

Google Workspace identifies hardware security keys as its most secure 2-Step Verification method. The key uses public-key cryptography to verify both the legitimate service and the login page, so a phishing site cannot authenticate merely because an employee typed a username and password into it.

What a hardware security key does for Google Workspace

It proves the site, not just the password

During registration, the key creates a cryptographic credential associated with the legitimate Google sign-in service. At sign-in, Google sends a challenge; the key signs it only for the correct service origin. A copied password is therefore insufficient for an attacker using a look-alike domain. This is why Google describes security keys as protecting against phishing threats.

#1 Best Overall
Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

Two-step verification and passkeys are related but different

A key can be used as a second factor after a password. That is the familiar 2-Step Verification flow: enter the password, then touch or tap the key. A FIDO2-capable key can also create a passkey stored on the hardware device. A passkey can support passwordless Google sign-in when the account and Workspace policy allow it. Do not assume that every older FIDO or U2F-only token can create a passkey; FIDO2 capability is the requirement.

Why this matters to Workspace administrators

Google reported that phishing and credential theft drove 37% of successful intrusions, while email-delivered infostealers increased 84% in 2024. Those figures explain the threat model, but they do not mean a key eliminates every risk. Stolen sessions, compromised endpoints, malicious browser extensions and recovery-channel abuse still need separate controls.

USB-C, USB-A or NFC: choosing the connector

USB-C/NFC

USB-C/NFC Titan is the default for a current laptop and phone fleet. Employees can insert it into USB-C computers, or tap it to a phone that supports NFC security-key interaction. Confirm that desktops, docking stations and managed phones expose a usable USB-C port; a USB-C charging port is not always convenient when the computer is mounted under a desk or behind a monitor.

USB-A/NFC

USB-A/NFC Titan suits older desktops, laptops and shared workstations. Google documents a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter in the USB-A package, which gives the key a path into some USB-C systems. Treat an adapter as a compatibility aid rather than a universal solution: ports can be recessed, blocked by cases or restricted by endpoint policy.

NFC-only use on phones

NFC avoids a phone adapter, but it requires an NFC-capable phone and an operating system and browser that support the security-key flow. Tell employees where to tap the key and require a test enrollment on each supported phone type. A key that works by USB on a laptop may still need NFC enabled on the phone.

Mixed fleets

Do not distribute one connector variant blindly across a mixed fleet. Inventory USB-C, USB-A and NFC usage first. If a department regularly moves between old desktops and USB-C laptops, USB-A/NFC with the documented adapter may reduce exceptions; if most work happens on USB-C laptops and modern phones, USB-C/NFC usually creates the least friction.

Google Titan: when it is the safest default

Titan is the most straightforward choice when your requirement is specifically “a hardware key for Google Workspace.” Google documents Titan’s USB-C/NFC and USB-A/NFC forms, its compatibility with Google phones, Chromebooks, tablets and Chrome, and its use with Advanced Protection. The keys combine Google-engineered firmware with a purpose-built secure-element chip, while FIDO standards provide compatibility beyond Google’s own services.

Yubico - YubiKey 5C NFC - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified - Protect Your Online Accounts
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
  • MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts

Connector selection is the practical differentiator. Buy USB-C/NFC for a predominantly USB-C fleet. Buy USB-A/NFC when legacy computers are common or when USB-A is the only dependable port at shared workstations. In either case, test NFC on the phone models your staff actually use.

Availability is not worldwide by default. Google’s March 26, 2025 announcement said Titan had expanded to 22 markets. Check the Google Store for the employee’s country before setting a procurement policy; a product listed in one market may not be orderable, priced the same or supported for delivery in another.

A Google Store kit page showed Titan starting at $30 when captured in 2026. Treat that as a dated starting-price reference, not a promise of today’s price, a recurring promotion or a price in every country. Budget for a backup key, shipping, taxes, replacement stock and any adapter or procurement overhead.

When a Yubico YubiKey FIDO2 model makes sense

Yubico’s guidance positions FIDO2 hardware keys as a phishing-resistant option. That makes a YubiKey a reasonable category alternative when your organization already standardizes on that ecosystem or needs a particular form factor. The family contains different connectors and feature sets, so “YubiKey” is not a sufficient purchasing specification.

Before approving a model, record its connector, FIDO2 support, firmware capabilities and behavior when creating a Google passkey. Verify that the model is in stock in the countries where you operate and that its price fits the replacement budget. Run a pilot with the exact browser, operating-system builds, managed-phone models and Workspace policies used by employees; do not infer compatibility from a different model in the same family.

How administrators should deploy keys in Workspace

1. Define the account population and connector standard

Start with administrators, finance users, executives, service owners and other accounts whose compromise would affect many people. Inventory each group’s computer ports, phone NFC capability, browser and endpoint restrictions. Decide whether one connector standard is realistic or whether departments need USB-C/NFC and USB-A/NFC variants.

2. Configure organization policy

In the Google Admin console, open the Security and authentication controls for 2-Step Verification. Google provides organization-level controls to enforce security-key use. Roll out enforcement in stages: pilot administrators, document the recovery process, then apply the requirement to additional organizational units or groups. Keep a monitored exception process for accounts that cannot yet use the selected connector.

Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified (Pack of 2)
  • The information below is per-pack only
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks.

3. Enroll the key on the account

  1. Sign in to the employee’s Google Account using the organization’s approved enrollment device and browser.
  2. Open the account’s 2-Step Verification settings and choose the option to add a security key.
  3. Insert the USB key or bring it near the phone’s NFC reader when prompted.
  4. Touch the key’s sensor when the browser requests user presence, then give the credential a name that identifies its owner and role without exposing sensitive information.
  5. Sign out and perform a test sign-in in a fresh browser session. Confirm both the normal computer path and the phone/NFC path if the employee will use both.

Screen labels can change as Google updates account and Admin console interfaces. The essential controls are the account’s 2-Step Verification security-key enrollment and the organization’s enforcement setting.

4. Decide how passkeys are governed

Google announced in July 2025 that passkey support was generally available to more than 11 million Google Workspace customers, with administrator capabilities to audit enrollment and restrict passkeys to physical security keys. If your policy requires a hardware-bound credential, use the control that restricts passkeys to physical security keys rather than allowing every passkey type. Explain to employees that a passkey created on a hardware key is different from a passkey stored only on a personal device.

5. Communicate the sign-in paths

  • On a computer, insert the key into the correct port and touch it when prompted.
  • On an NFC-capable phone, tap the key in the location specified by the phone’s sign-in prompt.
  • Never approve a key prompt after arriving at a sign-in page from an unexpected email or message; navigate to the organization’s normal Google sign-in route.
  • Report a lost key immediately so administrators can remove its credential and issue the recovery key.

Backup keys and account recovery

Google’s documentation explains how to enroll and enforce security keys but does not prescribe a universal number of keys. As operational guidance, issue a primary key and a separately stored backup for each high-value account. Keep the backup under controlled access, such as a sealed envelope in a security cabinet or an approved alternate custodian’s possession. Do not attach both keys to the same employee badge or laptop bag.

Test the backup before an emergency. A key that was never enrolled, has the wrong connector or is stored where no one can reach it is not a recovery plan. Record the account owner, key identifier, enrollment date, storage location and revocation contact in an access-controlled inventory. For shared administrative duties, use individually assigned accounts rather than passing one key among several people.

If a key is lost

  1. Use the backup key or the organization’s documented recovery method to regain access.
  2. In the account’s security settings, remove the lost key’s credential.
  3. In the Admin console, review the account’s 2-Step Verification and passkey enrollment records and revoke the missing credential wherever it appears.
  4. Issue and test a replacement key, then update the inventory and storage record.

If an employee is locked out

Do not disable security-key enforcement globally for convenience. Have a designated administrator follow the documented recovery path, verify the employee through your internal identity process and enroll a replacement. After access is restored, check for unrecognized keys, sessions and recovery changes.

Compatibility checklist before purchase

  • Computers: Count USB-C and USB-A ports, including docking stations and shared workstations.
  • Phones: Confirm NFC capability, case clearance and the supported mobile browser flow.
  • FIDO2: Require FIDO2 if the key must create a passkey.
  • Browsers and operating systems: Pilot the exact managed versions, not a consumer device that employees will not use.
  • Endpoint controls: Check whether USB devices, NFC or browser security-key prompts are restricted.
  • Regional procurement: Verify the local storefront, delivery, taxes, warranty and replacement availability.
  • Identity policy: Decide whether keys are used as a second factor, as physical passkeys, or both.
  • Recovery: Assign backup storage, custodians and a lost-key revocation process before enforcement.

Common deployment problems and fixes

The key is not detected

Try the computer’s built-in port instead of a hub, check whether endpoint policy blocks USB security keys and test another supported browser. On a mixed fleet, verify that the employee received the intended USB-A or USB-C variant rather than relying on an adapter that does not fit the workstation.

NFC enrollment fails

Confirm NFC is enabled, remove a thick phone case, hold the key against the phone’s indicated reader area and retry from the supported browser prompt. If the phone remains unreliable, use the USB path or issue a connector that matches the phone and laptop environment.

Yubico - Security Key NFC Bundle (USB-A and USB-C) - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • Works with 1000+ Accounts: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.

  • Non-compatible - Upgrade to the YubiKey 5 Series for use with the Yubico Authenticator App.

A key works for 2-Step Verification but cannot create a passkey

Check the model’s FIDO2 capability. A key can support an older security-key flow without supporting passkey creation. Replace it with a FIDO2-capable model and ensure the Workspace policy permits physical-key passkeys.

Employees lose access after enforcement

Most lockouts are preparation failures: no enrolled backup, an untested connector, or a recovery process known only to one administrator. Pilot enforcement, test both the primary and backup paths, and keep an emergency administrator account governed by the same documented controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cost and lifecycle planning

The purchase price is only one part of the total cost. For each protected account, include the primary key, backup key, shipping and regional taxes, spare inventory, replacement after loss, enrollment time and help-desk support. The captured Google Store Titan kit price began at $30 in 2026, but the page did not establish a universal current price for every country or connector variant.

Replace a key when it is lost, damaged, no longer supported by your managed device fleet or no longer meets the organization’s FIDO2/passkey policy. When staff change roles, remove credentials from accounts they no longer administer and update the key inventory. Keep procurement records model-specific: “FIDO2 key” describes a capability, not a connector, firmware version or regional product listing.

Recommended purchasing decision

For a USB-C-first organization, choose Google Titan USB-C/NFC, enroll it as the employee’s security key and, where passwordless sign-in is desired, create a physical FIDO2 passkey. For a legacy or mixed USB-A fleet, choose Google Titan USB-A/NFC and use the documented adapter only where it has been tested. Consider a Yubico YubiKey FIDO2 model when its exact specification and local supply fit your environment, but evaluate the model rather than the family name.

Whichever key you select, the security outcome depends on complete deployment: enforce the policy at the Workspace level, train employees on USB and NFC sign-in, restrict physical-key passkeys when required, maintain a separately stored backup and revoke lost credentials promptly.
