The right hardcore RTS for a friend group depends on whether you want to compete, cooperate against AI, or share control of one army. For a high-pressure duel, choose StarCraft II 1v1; for co-op against AI with beginner-friendly onboarding, choose Age of Empires IV; and for learning competitive maps together, try unranked Quick Play in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition.

Choose by the kind of match you want

Game and mode How friends play Best fit What is documented
StarCraft II 1v1 Compete head-to-head Friends who want a direct, high-pressure contest Blizzard calls 1v1 its most competitive mode. Official Blizzard description
StarCraft II Archon Mode Two friends share control of one base and army Partners who want to coordinate on the same side Blizzard describes Archon Mode as two players controlling the same base and army. Official Blizzard description
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition Quick Play Unranked competitive-style matches Friends learning competitive maps and settings The official game site describes Quick Play as an unranked way to learn those maps and settings. Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition custom games Play privately with friends, against AI or community members A group that wants more control over the lobby and opponents Custom games with friends against AI or community members are documented on the official game site. Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition
Age of Empires IV multiplayer skirmishes Play with friends against AI or other online players Friends who want co-op options and a route in for newer players The official quickstart guide covers multiplayer skirmishes and co-op against AI. Age of Empires IV
Company of Heroes 3 Final Stand Wave defense, solo or with a friend Friends seeking tactical co-op rather than a conventional RTS duel Official announcements describe the mode as playable alone or with a friend; current lobby and balance details may change with updates. Company of Heroes 3

These are mode-based recommendations, not a ranking of population, balance, queue times, or overall quality; comparable current evidence for those factors is not established.

For the most intense head-to-head match: StarCraft II 1v1

If both players want the other person to be the opponent, 1v1 is the clearest fit. Blizzard itself describes it as the game’s most competitive mode. That makes it a natural pick for friends who welcome a direct contest rather than a shared challenge. Expect skill differences to be visible: it is a duel, not a mode that puts both friends on one team.

For learning competitive play together: Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition

Use Quick Play to learn the competitive format

The game’s official site describes Quick Play as an unranked way to learn competitive maps and settings. It gives friends a way to encounter that format without making the match ranked.

Use a custom game for a private group or AI opponents

Custom games let friends set up a match against AI or community members, according to the official game page. Choose this route when the group wants a private lobby or wants computer opponents involved instead of only competing against one another.

For co-op against AI and a gentler entry: Age of Empires IV

Age of Empires IV supports multiplayer skirmishes against friends, AI, or other online players, and its official quickstart guide describes co-op against AI. This makes it the most directly documented choice here for friends who want to cooperate against computer opponents rather than fight each other.

For someone new to RTS games, World’s Edge recommends Mission Zero as a way to learn the basics. The official Age of Empires IV page says it is intended for players inexperienced with real-time strategy. A beginner can use that onboarding before joining a shared match, rather than having to learn every basic mechanic during a demanding game with a friend.

For shared control of one army: StarCraft II Archon Mode

Archon Mode changes the usual co-op arrangement: instead of each friend commanding a separate army, both control the same base and army. Blizzard describes it as playing the 1v1 game with a friend controlling those shared forces. Read Blizzard’s mode description.

This structure suits partners who want to coordinate decisions and execution within one side. It is distinct from teaming up in a match where each player has separate control, and distinct from a conventional duel between friends.

For tactical wave-defense co-op: Company of Heroes 3 Final Stand

Official announcements describe Final Stand as a wave-defense experience playable solo or with a friend. That makes it a co-op option for players who want to handle incoming waves together rather than make a private head-to-head match the main event. The available description does not establish current lobby or balance details, which can change with updates; check recent official announcements or patch notes before organizing a session. What about Stormgate?

Stormgate‘s Steam page describes PvP and three-player co-op, but a report said online modes were due to be suspended at the end of April 2026. Current service status as of October 2026 is not established here, so do not count on its online modes being available without checking a fresh official status notice. Stormgate on Steam.
