For a specification-backed jump above the ROG Xbox Ally X, start with handhelds built around AMD’s Radeon 8060S: the GPD WIN 5 and OneXFly APEX. The Ally X’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme integrates 16 RDNA 3.5 graphics cores, while the APEX lists a Radeon 8060S with 40 compute units. That is a higher graphics tier on paper, but available evidence does not justify a universal percentage or frames-per-second claim. The APEX is the clearest example of how much extra power depends on wattage and cooling: OneXPlayer publishes Time Spy results from 25 W through 120 W, with the 120 W mode requiring an optional water-cooling accessory.

The short list: which handhelds actually move above Ally X graphics?

Only two products in the available specifications make a clear hardware case for more integrated-GPU headroom than the ROG Xbox Ally X: the GPD WIN 5 and OneXFly APEX. Both are identified with Radeon 8060S graphics and Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processors in official product material. The APEX has the stronger published evidence because OneXPlayer gives power-specific Time Spy results and explains its cooling limits.

The MSI Claw A8 is worth considering for its larger display and high-capacity battery, but MSI lists Radeon 890M graphics with Ryzen Z2 Extreme. The available specifications do not establish that it is faster than the Ally X, so it should not be presented as a proven upgrade.

  • Best documented performance scaling: OneXFly APEX, when configured for 60–80 W and used with suitable cooling.
  • Most promising alternative to investigate: GPD WIN 5 with Radeon 8060S.
  • Best large-screen comparison rather than upgrade: MSI Claw A8.

Prices, regional configurations and stock can change quickly. Confirm the exact CPU, memory, storage and cooling bundle at checkout rather than assuming every listing uses the same specification.

What the ROG Xbox Ally X baseline includes

ASUS’s US specification page for the ROG XBOX Ally X20 (2026) lists a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24 GB of LPDDR5X memory, a 1 TB SSD, a 7.4-inch 1080p 120 Hz OLED display, USB4 and microSD Express support. The page displayed $1,299.99 when accessed on October 13, 2026; that is a time- and region-specific listing, not a guaranteed current price.

AMD specifies the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme’s integrated graphics as RDNA 3.5 with 16 graphics cores and a boost clock of up to 2,900 MHz. Those are vendor specifications for the processor family, not a promise of a particular game frame rate. Actual results depend on the selected power mode, memory allocation, game engine, resolution, cooling and whether upscaling or frame generation is enabled.

Why Radeon 8060S is a higher graphics tier

The OneXFly APEX page lists a Radeon 8060S with 40 compute units alongside Ryzen AI Max+ 395. The GPD WIN 5’s official pages also identify Radeon 8060S graphics and Ryzen AI Max+ 395, although the captured material does not establish one universal RAM, SSD or regional retail configuration.

Comparing 40 compute units with 16 graphics cores is useful for identifying a different hardware class, but the terms are not interchangeable units of performance. Compute-unit counts alone cannot tell you how a handheld will perform at a fixed wattage. Memory bandwidth, sustained clocks, thermal limits, drivers and game settings all matter. Treat the 8060S as a specification-backed reason to investigate these models, not as an automatic multiplier over Ally X performance.

OneXFly APEX: the clearest case for more GPU power

What the official specification says

OneXPlayer’s Japanese APEX page lists Radeon 8060S graphics, Ryzen AI Max+ 395 and two materially different cooling configurations. The standard air-cooled model is specified for operation up to 80 W. A compatible water-cooled configuration using the optional Frost Bay accessory can reach a stated 120 W peak. Frost Bay is purchased separately and does not work with the standard air-cooled model.

Published Time Spy results by power level

OneXPlayer reports the following 3DMark Time Spy scores from its own 2026 lab testing. The company warns that actual values vary by environment. These are not independent, matched tests against the Ally X, and Time Spy is not a direct substitute for performance in a particular game.

APEX power setting OneXPlayer-reported Time Spy score Cooling requirement and qualification
25 W 4,083 Manufacturer lab result; environmental variation applies
60 W 9,035 Manufacturer lab result; environmental variation applies
80 W 10,518 Air-cooled configuration limit stated by OneXPlayer
120 W 12,146 Peak mode with compatible water cooling and optional Frost Bay

The spread between 25 W and 80 W illustrates why “more powerful” is incomplete without a power target. At 25 W, the same silicon is operating under a much tighter energy budget than at 80 W. At 120 W, the result depends on an external cooling setup that changes the device from a conventional self-contained handheld into a system intended for a desk or nearby accessory.

Who should choose the APEX?

  • Choose it if you want the most explicit manufacturer documentation of performance at several wattage levels.
  • Choose the air-cooled model if you want a self-contained handheld and accept the stated 80 W ceiling.
  • Choose the Frost Bay-compatible configuration only if you are comfortable carrying or using an additional cooling device and can verify compatibility before ordering.
  • Do not pay for a 120 W-capable bundle expecting that peak in every portable situation; the accessory and a suitable power source are part of the operating requirement.

GPD WIN 5: a strong 8060S candidate, with configuration checks required

GPD’s official WIN 5 specification and product pages identify Radeon 8060S graphics and Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with unified memory. That places the WIN 5 in the same broad graphics tier as the APEX and above the Ally X’s 16-core RDNA 3.5 integrated GPU on paper.

The available official material does not settle a single worldwide configuration, October 2026 price or local stock position. Retail listings can differ in memory and SSD capacity, so match the listing to the specific 8060S model rather than buying by the WIN 5 name alone.

How to vet a WIN 5 listing

  1. Confirm that the processor is Ryzen AI Max+ 395 and that the graphics specification explicitly says Radeon 8060S.
  2. Record the installed unified-memory capacity; do not assume every SKU has the same amount.
  3. Check SSD capacity, keyboard or regional layout and the included charger.
  4. Look for the manufacturer’s supported power modes and cooling description.
  5. Verify return terms and local warranty coverage, especially when the seller is importing a regional model.

Without independent, like-for-like game tests using the same wattage and settings as the Ally X, the responsible conclusion is that WIN 5 offers a higher graphics specification, not a guaranteed frame-rate advantage of a particular size.

MSI Claw A8: larger screen, not a proven graphics upgrade

MSI’s Claw A8 BZ2EM-023PH specification sheet, dated September 2, 2026, lists Radeon 890M graphics with Ryzen Z2 Extreme, 24 GB of memory and 1 TB of storage. One regional SKU carries an 8-inch 1920×1200 display with a 48–120 Hz refresh range and an 80 Wh battery.

The Claw A8 is relevant because it uses a current Z2-family processor and offers a larger panel than the Ally X. However, the available specification does not establish that Radeon 890M is faster than the Ally X’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme graphics. Buy it for the screen, battery capacity or ergonomics if those matter to you, not on the assumption that the name alone guarantees more GPU performance.

Regional bundles and specifications can vary. Confirm the exact model number, memory, storage, display and battery before comparing prices.

  • BUILT TO OUTLAST – The Legion Go 2 packs 74Whr of serious staying power. That means longer sessions, higher settings, and fewer compromises, whether you're gaming at full performance or tweaking settings on the go.
  • Power mode: note the sustained wattage and whether the device is running on battery or connected to a charger.
  • Cooling: distinguish stock air cooling from an external solution such as Frost Bay.
  • Game and build: use the same game version, scene, driver and operating-system settings.
  • Resolution and preset: 720p, 1080p and 1920×1200 workloads are not interchangeable; write down the graphics preset and ray-tracing options.
  • Upscaling and frame generation: identify whether technologies such as resolution scaling or generated frames are enabled.
  • Measurement: separate an average frame rate from one-percent lows, frame-time consistency and battery endurance.

Time Spy can show how a device scales as power rises, as the APEX figures do, but it cannot answer whether a particular game feels smoother at the same resolution. A credible head-to-head test should publish the complete settings and repeat the test after the device reaches a stable temperature.

Power, cooling and portability trade-offs

Battery operation

Higher wattage draws the battery down faster and produces more heat. A handheld that can sustain 80 W or more may need to be plugged in for its highest performance mode. Check whether the advertised mode is available on battery, whether it is time-limited and what charger capacity is required.

External cooling

The APEX’s 120 W figure is conditional: it requires a compatible water-cooled model and the separately purchased Frost Bay accessory. That can make the device suitable for a desk, hotel room or other stationary setup while reducing the simplicity that defines a conventional handheld. Treat the cooler as part of the system cost, weight and setup, not as an invisible specification.

Screen settings

A 120 Hz panel does not make a game run at 120 frames per second. Lowering resolution or refresh rate can reduce GPU load and improve battery life; OLED and IPS panels also have different contrast, response and power characteristics. The Ally X offers a 7.4-inch 1080p 120 Hz OLED, while the cited Claw A8 SKU offers an 8-inch 1920×1200 48–120 Hz display. The higher pixel count on the Claw A8 can require more rendering work at native resolution.

Memory and storage decisions

Integrated graphics use system memory, so capacity and memory bandwidth affect how comfortably a game can run alongside Windows and background applications. Confirm the exact unified-memory or LPDDR5X configuration for the SKU you are buying; product families can include multiple capacities.

Storage affects how many large games you can keep installed, not the graphics tier. The Ally X specification lists a 1 TB SSD and microSD Express support. A fast microSD Express card can expand capacity, but it does not add compute units or raise GPU performance.

A practical buying decision

  1. Set your performance target. If you need a specification-backed step above Ally X graphics, restrict the shortlist to Radeon 8060S models first.
  2. Choose your operating mode. Decide whether you will mostly play on battery, use a charger at a sustained 60–80 W, or accept a desk-bound external-cooling setup.
  3. Check availability in your region. The consulted APEX page was sold out, and WIN 5 pricing and stock were not established in the available official material.
  4. Match the SKU. Verify CPU, GPU, memory, SSD, display, charger and cooling bundle in the seller’s exact listing.
  5. Price the complete system. Include a higher-wattage charger, dock or Frost Bay if your target mode requires one.
  6. Look for independent tests. Prefer reviews that show game settings, wattage, temperatures, fan behavior and battery results rather than a single synthetic score.

What to expect in real games

Radeon 8060S hardware gives the WIN 5 and APEX more graphics resources than the Ally X specification, but the final result depends on how much power the handheld can sustain. At a conservative portable wattage, the advantage may be smaller than the hardware comparison suggests. At 60–80 W with adequate cooling, the gap can become more meaningful, while 120 W APEX operation is a special, accessory-dependent case.

Use the display’s native resolution only when the GPU can sustain it. For demanding games, a lower internal render resolution with an upscaler can preserve image quality while reducing load. Locking the refresh rate to a level the system can maintain often feels better than chasing a peak number that causes fluctuating frame times.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Turning compute-unit counts into an FPS promise: 40 CUs versus 16 graphics cores identifies a tier difference but does not provide a universal percentage.
  • Quoting the APEX’s 120 W score as normal handheld performance: that mode requires compatible water cooling and Frost Bay.
  • Comparing different resolutions: 1080p and 1920×1200 results are not directly equivalent.
  • Ignoring power-source conditions: plugged-in and battery modes can have different limits.
  • Assuming family names guarantee one configuration: regional Claw A8, WIN 5 and APEX listings may differ in memory, storage and accessories.
  • Treating a synthetic benchmark as a game test: Time Spy is useful context, not a substitute for repeatable game measurements.

Bottom line

If your priority is demonstrably more GPU headroom than the ROG Xbox Ally X, investigate the GPD WIN 5 and OneXFly APEX first because their official materials identify Radeon 8060S graphics. The APEX is the better-documented choice for understanding wattage and cooling, with OneXPlayer lab Time Spy scores of 4,083 at 25 W, 9,035 at 60 W, 10,518 at 80 W and 12,146 at 120 W. The 120 W result is conditional on the Frost Bay water-cooling setup, and the consulted page was sold out. The MSI Claw A8 is a credible large-screen alternative, but current specifications do not prove it is faster than Ally X.
