For a broadly compatible file, use MP4 with H.264 video and AAC stereo, and keep each video’s original resolution and frame rate unless you have a clear reason to change them. Set bitrate, CBR and keyframe interval in the separate encoder that sends the feed to YouTube.
For YouTube Live via RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency (no more than four seconds). Its current H.264 guidance lists 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p30. These are live-ingest recommendations, not HandBrake file-encoding settings. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings before configuring a stream, since platform guidance can change.

What HandBrake does—and what it does not
HandBrake converts video files. It can prepare the recordings in a playlist, but it does not create the continuous live connection to YouTube. A separate live encoder or streaming service plays the prepared files, encodes the outgoing feed and sends it using your YouTube stream URL and key.

That distinction matters because file quality controls and live-ingest controls solve different problems. HandBrake’s quality setting affects the encoded file’s quality and size; the live encoder’s bitrate and keyframe interval affect the stream sent to YouTube. YouTube transcodes live video for viewers, but the incoming feed still needs a reliable upload path. HandBrake’s official presets documentation describes its file presets, while YouTube’s encoder guidance covers the live feed.

Prepare playlist videos in HandBrake
Start with Web > Creator
In HandBrake, choose a Web > Creator preset at a resolution and frame rate suitable for the source. The listed Creator presets use MP4, H.264 and AAC stereo, and are intended for video-hosting uploads. They are a practical compatibility starting point, not a special 24/7 live-stream preset. Avoid upscaling a smaller source just to match a higher preset: it cannot restore detail that is not in the original.
Choose quality by testing, not by chasing one RF number
There is no single best HandBrake RF value for every recording. Encoder presets trade off speed, quality and file size, and changing the preset can mean adjusting the quality or bitrate control. Encode a short representative segment first. Check fine detail, motion, audio level and sync, then use the result to decide whether the full playlist is acceptable before batch encoding. HandBrake explains these trade-offs in its video encoder presets and tunes documentation.

Set up the live encoder for YouTube
Choose a codec supported by the encoder and the YouTube ingest path. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264 in MP4 remains a straightforward choice for preparing playlist files, but the live encoder’s supported formats determine what it can transmit. Match the live output to the source’s real resolution and frame rate where practical.

The two bitrate figures above are YouTube platform guidance for those specific H.264 modes, not a universal target for other resolutions, frame rates or codecs. Choose a stream quality your actual upload connection can sustain; YouTube advises testing the connection and monitoring stream health rather than assuming a fixed bandwidth target.

Live audio settings
YouTube’s advanced guidance lists AAC or MP3 stereo audio, 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps stereo audio. Use settings supported by your encoder and test the sound on a representative segment, including the loudest passage and any gaps between playlist items.
Enable and test the YouTube stream
- Enable live streaming on the channel. If this is the first time, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until the intended start time.
- Create or select a live stream in YouTube Studio. Use the stream setup flow for an encoder rather than a webcam workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into the live encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to the stream. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
- Start with a test feed. Use content with motion and audio similar to the actual playlist, then check YouTube’s stream-health messages and the preview before relying on the setup.
- Monitor the real upload path. Run an upload speed test on the connection the encoder will use, and observe stream health under real operating conditions. There is no India-specific bitrate or HandBrake preset established by the cited guidance; connection quality and stability vary by location and service.
For continuity, a UPS for the streaming computer and router is an optional practical safeguard against some power interruptions, not a YouTube requirement. It will not protect against internet outages or encoder failures.

Plan archive sessions and viewer rewind
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. If dependable archives matter, divide the operation into sessions shorter than 12 hours and retain a local recording as a backup. Long streams can also have limited or unavailable DVR beyond 12 hours, so tell viewers if rewind may not be available for the full broadcast. Clear rights before looping videos
Do not assume that a recording is safe to broadcast because it is already online, or because you have a license in hand. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream, an interruption, or termination if the matched material remains. Even licensed content can be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. The livestream terms place responsibility on the content provider for worldwide exploitation rights and applicable territorial compliance. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and livestream terms and conditions, and confirm permissions for every track, video and other included work before scheduling it.

Choose a workflow that fits the channel
The important trade-offs are the compatibility of the codec across the encoder and playback chain, whether the source’s resolution and frame rate are sustainable over your upload connection, the balance between software encoding quality and device load, and whether you need shorter sessions for archive reliability. You also need to decide whether playlist playback should depend on a computer and local automation or run through a cloud service. YouTube’s encoder setup page identifies cloud-based prerecorded-video streaming tools, including Gyre; verify the service’s current fit and terms directly before choosing one.
