For a typical 1080p30 source, start with HandBrake’s Fast 1080p30 preset, preserve the source frame rate, and check the finished file before encoding a full playlist. Treat the file’s quality or average-bitrate setting separately from YouTube’s live-ingestion settings: for a 1080p30 H.264 live feed, YouTube’s current recommendation is 14 Mbps with CBR, not a HandBrake file-bitrate target. A preset can prepare a file; it cannot guarantee a stable 24/7 stream.
Choose a HandBrake preset that matches the source
HandBrake’s Fast 1080p30 is a broadly compatible starting point for conventional 1080p30 video. Its current preset documentation describes it as a good choice for getting started and lists MP4, H.264 video, and AAC stereo audio. It is a starting point, not a universal quality optimum. - 1080p30 source: Fast 1080p30 is a practical default when compatibility and a straightforward encode matter.
- 1080p60 source for web playback: Consider Creator 1080p60 rather than forcing the material through a 30 fps preset. The appropriate choice depends on the source frame rate and the intended result.
- Already 1920×1080: Keep those dimensions if appropriate. Presets may downscale sources that exceed their maximum dimensions, so inspect the output summary rather than assuming resolution is unchanged.

Frame rate: preserve the source unless conversion is intentional
Choose Same as Source when preserving the source timing is the goal. HandBrake’s current frame-rate documentation says this option supports variable frame rate (VFR). If the playback or streaming path requires a fixed rate, test constant frame rate (CFR) at the source’s actual rate. Peak Frame Rate (PFR) is a ceiling: it leaves portions at or below the chosen rate alone and limits higher-rate portions; it does not make every part of a video exactly that rate. The HandBrake frame-rate page is labeled a draft, so check its current wording when relying on these control details: HandBrake frame-rate documentation.

Do not turn 24, 25, or 30 fps material into 60 fps simply because the eventual YouTube stream is high resolution. A frame-rate conversion changes the timing or cadence; it does not create genuine source motion detail.
Encoder and encoder preset
H.264 is the straightforward compatibility choice for these common HandBrake presets and YouTube’s live guidance. YouTube also lists AV1 and H.265 for live encoding, but choose those only if the live encoder and ingestion workflow you actually use support them. HandBrake’s encoder-speed preset is a separate choice: start with its default or a neutral option such as medium. Slower encoding trades more time for potential compression efficiency, with results dependent on the source and hardware; changing speed may require retuning quality or bitrate. Leave tune and advanced options at default or none unless the video has a clear specialized characteristic, such as animation or film grain, and you understand the trade-offs. Quality or average bitrate
Use constant quality when consistent visual quality matters more than predictable file size. Use average bitrate when you need to target file size or fit a storage budget. There is no single official RF value established as best for every 1080p video in a 24/7 playlist. Pick a short, representative segment, encode it, and inspect fine detail, noise, motion, and resulting size before encoding the library. This is a workflow for evaluating your own material, not a claim that one RF value or encode has been tested here.

Audio
AAC stereo is a sensible default for ordinary stereo sources and is included in the cited HandBrake 1080p presets. YouTube’s live guidance accepts AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio for the live feed. That recommendation applies to the live encoder; it does not mean every source file must be re-encoded to precisely 128 Kbps.
Keep HandBrake file settings separate from YouTube Live settings
The number to use for “1080p bitrate” depends on what you mean. A file prepared for upload, a file’s HandBrake average bitrate, and the live feed sent to YouTube are different things. Do not copy YouTube Live’s ingestion recommendation into HandBrake’s file-bitrate box. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance gives these figures:

These are YouTube’s current live-ingestion recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026; they are not HandBrake file-encoding targets. For live video, YouTube recommends CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (do not exceed 4 seconds), and RTMPS. Its guidance also specifies Rec. 709 for SDR; the advanced guidance calls for square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, and CABAC. Check the current YouTube Live encoder settings before configuring an encoder, since platform recommendations can change.

Upload recommendations are different again
For 1080p SDR H.264 uploads, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps at standard frame rates (24, 25, or 30 fps) and 12 Mbps at high frame rates (48, 50, or 60 fps). Its upload guidance recommends matching the recorded frame rate and using progressive scan. Those upload figures are not the same as live-ingestion rates: YouTube’s 1080p30 H.264 live recommendation is 14 Mbps. Use the figures for the workflow they describe, not as interchangeable presets. Check the full live pipeline for a 24/7 channel
Correct HandBrake output is only one part of a continuous broadcast. The playback and live-encoding setup must deliver a suitable feed to YouTube, and its network connection and operation must remain stable. YouTube advises testing with audio and motion similar to the intended stream, checking that upload capacity can sustain the selected bitrate, and monitoring stream-health messages and audio/video quality. Review its live streaming tips and encoder guidance before starting. A HandBrake preset makes no promise of continuous service or uptime.
- Inspect the output file’s resolution, frame rate, video codec, and audio before adding it to a long playlist.
- Test a representative segment containing the kind of movement and sound expected during the stream.
- Verify that the live encoder uses the correct codec-specific bitrate, CBR, keyframe interval, and protocol.
- Confirm sufficient, sustained outbound bandwidth and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators after going live.
Troubleshooting common problems
The output is lower resolution than expected
Check HandBrake’s output summary and preset dimensions. If the source exceeds the selected preset’s maximum dimensions, the preset may downscale it. Confirm that the source itself is 1920×1080 and adjust the dimensions intentionally rather than assuming the preset preserves every input size.

Motion looks uneven or the frame rate changed
Compare the source and output frame rates. Use Same as Source to retain source timing, or test CFR at the source’s actual rate if the downstream system needs fixed frame rate. Check whether PFR is capping high-rate portions. Avoid converting lower-frame-rate footage to 60 fps without a specific reason.
The file is too large, or detail looks poor
Constant quality allows file size to vary; average bitrate can target a size but may not preserve the same visual quality across different content. Test a representative segment and compare fine detail, noise, and motion. Do not use YouTube’s live bitrate as a substitute for choosing a HandBrake file-quality setting.

Check the live encoder’s bitrate and whether the connection can sustain it, then verify CBR, the 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds), and RTMPS. Review YouTube’s health messages while testing with representative audio and motion. A correctly encoded prerecorded file does not correct an unstable outbound connection or a misconfigured live encoder.

The encode is slow or the output is incompatible
Return to the encoder’s default or a neutral speed preset, then check whether specialized tune or advanced options were enabled. Slower settings can take longer and may change compression efficiency; tunes and advanced options can affect compatibility. Retest the target playback and streaming path after changing encoder options.
