Set Preferred Input Device to Gamepad before joining an input-restricted playlist. In the main menu, open Options & Career → Settings → Control, choose Gamepad, then configure each Halo title separately under Controls → Configure Gamepad. Start with moderate look sensitivity and acceleration, change one setting at a time in a private match, and save a custom layout for every game you play.
This approach keeps controller matchmaking consistent across Xbox, Windows PC and Steam Deck. It also avoids two common traps: restoring PC defaults can switch preferred input back to Mouse & Keyboard, and Campaign playlists do not support Xbox-to-PC cross-play even though supported multiplayer modes do.

The recommended baseline for every controller
MCC contains several games with different movement, aiming and button behaviors. There is no single numeric sensitivity that is objectively best for every player, screen or title. The reliable baseline is to identify the controller correctly, create a per-game layout, and tune look controls methodically.
1. Select Gamepad before matchmaking
- From the main menu, open Options & Career.
- Choose Settings, then open the Control tab.
- Set Preferred Input Device to Gamepad.
- Back out to the main menu and enter the multiplayer playlist or Custom Game Browser.
Halo Support documents this path for Steam Deck and describes the same preferred-input setting on Xbox and PC. Make the change before searching for an input-restricted playlist; changing it after a search has started may not alter the matchmaking pool already selected.

2. Build a custom layout for each Halo game
- Open Options & Career → Settings → Controls → Configure Gamepad.
- Under Gameplay, select the specific game you want to edit.
- Choose a button-layout preset that is close to your preferred grip.
- Select Edit Layout, assign the buttons and sticks, and save the result as a Custom layout.
MCC supports layouts per game. A scheme that feels natural in Halo 2 may place a frequently used action differently in Halo 4 or Reach, so do not assume that one global arrangement will feel identical throughout the collection. Keep the same core actions on the same fingers where possible, but verify every title in a short local or private session.
3. Start sensitivity and acceleration at moderate values
The Controls tab exposes controller look sensitivity and look acceleration, but official documentation does not prescribe a universal numeric setting. Begin near the middle of each slider, then adjust only one variable at a time. This prevents a faster sensitivity from masking an acceleration problem and makes it easier to return to a known-good setup.
How input-based matchmaking and cross-play work
Preferred input affects restricted playlists
MCC supports cross-play and input-based matchmaking for multiplayer on Xbox and PC. Preferred Input Device tells the game which control method should be used when a playlist restricts or groups inputs. A controller connected to a PC is not enough by itself: if the preference remains Mouse & Keyboard, the game can place you in the wrong input category or prevent the result you expect.
Check the setting after major updates, after changing controllers, and after using any reset-to-default command. On a shared PC, each person should verify the value in their own game profile before searching.
Xbox-to-PC multiplayer is supported; Campaign cross-play is not
Supported online multiplayer modes can automatically match Xbox and PC players. Campaign and Campaign Playlists currently cannot use cross-play, so an Xbox player and a PC player cannot launch those cooperative campaign activities together through MCC cross-platform matchmaking. This limitation is separate from controller choice and cannot be fixed by changing Preferred Input Device.

A 2025 matchmaking maintenance patch
A maintenance patch released on September 17, 2025 addressed a cross-platform matchmaking issue and was intended to make searches faster for Xbox PC and Microsoft Store versions. Xbox and Steam also required the associated download. If searches remain unusually slow, confirm that every player is on the current game build before changing controller settings.
Platform-specific controller and display setup
Xbox Series X
Series X can render MCC at 4K with either 60 Hz or 120 Hz output, depending on the display and console configuration. Series S targets 1080p at 60 Hz or 120 Hz. These output modes matter because the field-of-view control has a refresh-rate restriction.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- The FOV slider ranges from 70 to 120 degrees on Xbox Series X|S.
- FOV adjustment requires 60 Hz output.
- At 120 Hz, FOV is locked to the default value.
If a wider view is more important than the lower-latency feel of 120 Hz, switch the console or display output to 60 Hz before changing FOV. If you prefer 120 Hz for smoother motion, leave FOV at its default rather than troubleshooting a slider that is intentionally unavailable.
Windows PC
PC players have the most flexibility for controllers, keyboard devices and display refresh rates, but they also have a documented reset trap. The December 2020 patch notes state that using Restore to Default Settings on PC sets Preferred Input to Mouse & Keyboard.
After any reset, repeat Options & Career → Settings → Control → Preferred Input Device → Gamepad, then reopen Configure Gamepad and verify the active custom layout for the game you are about to play. Do this even if the controller worked in the previous session; the reset changes the preference independently of whether Windows still detects the device.

Steam Deck
For input-restricted matchmaking on Steam Deck, open the Control tab and set Preferred Input Device to Gamepad before entering matchmaking. The handheld’s desktop, gamepad and community-control layers can otherwise make the selected input ambiguous to MCC.
Steam Deck also has a documented anti-cheat launch-option issue. Halo Support’s April 2023 notes describe cases in which selecting the Anti-Cheat Disabled option can launch with anti-cheat enabled. The recorded workaround is to select the Anti-Cheat Disabled option when you need access to matchmaking and the Custom Game Browser. If the game still starts in the wrong mode, exit completely, reselect that launch option in Steam and launch again before changing in-game controller mappings.
Choosing a controller profile by play style
| Use case | Preferred input | Layout approach | Sensitivity method | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ranked or input-restricted multiplayer | Gamepad selected before queueing | Custom per-game layout with jump, crouch and equipment reachable without releasing the right stick | Moderate starting sensitivity; adjust in small steps and test tracking before turning speed | The input category is determined by the preferred-device setting, not merely by plugging in a controller |
| Casual cross-play multiplayer | Gamepad on Xbox, PC or Steam Deck | Use one familiar preset, then save title-specific corrections | Prioritize a setting that keeps both close-range turns and mid-range aiming controllable | Cross-play applies to supported multiplayer, not Campaign or Campaign Playlists |
| High-refresh Xbox play | Gamepad | Keep the layout consistent across titles to reduce adaptation time | Set sensitivity after choosing 60 or 120 Hz; do not use the FOV slider at 120 Hz | At 120 Hz on Series X|S, FOV remains at its default |
| Steam Deck handheld play | Gamepad selected in the Control tab | Custom layout that avoids awkward rear-button or trackpad conflicts | Make small changes while holding the device in the grip used during matches | Anti-cheat launch selection can affect access to matchmaking and the Custom Game Browser |
| Shared-access or mobility-focused setup | Gamepad, with supported adaptive hardware where needed | Map essential actions to the controls the player can operate reliably | Change acceleration only after the physical control arrangement is comfortable | Some accessibility solutions require separate Xbox system configuration |
How to tune look sensitivity and acceleration without guessing
Use a repeatable test rather than copying another player’s numbers. Sensitivity controls how far the view moves for a given stick movement; acceleration changes how quickly that movement builds as the stick is held or pushed farther. The right balance depends on stick condition, dead-zone feel, display size, field of view and the Halo title.
A five-minute private-match procedure
- Choose one Halo game under Configure Gamepad and load the custom layout you intend to use online.
- Enter a private match or training session with a stable, visible target.
- Set look sensitivity and acceleration to moderate starting positions.
- Test a slow horizontal track across a target. If the reticle repeatedly overshoots, lower sensitivity or acceleration, but change only one.
- Test a rapid 180-degree turn. If you cannot turn quickly without lifting and recentering the stick, raise sensitivity slightly.
- Test a diagonal movement while tracking a moving target. If horizontal and vertical control feel inconsistent, undo the last change and adjust the other variable in a smaller increment.
- Play several minutes without changing anything. A setting that feels fast in a stationary test may become tiring or inaccurate during a real match.
- Save the custom layout and record the two slider positions outside the game so an update or reset can be restored quickly.
Symptoms and targeted adjustments
- Overshooting at short range: reduce sensitivity first, then retest acceleration.
- Slow target tracking feels sticky: increase sensitivity a small amount; do not immediately maximize acceleration.
- Turns begin slowly and then lurch: reduce acceleration while keeping the sensitivity that gives you the desired maximum turn speed.
- Aiming changes after switching games: verify that the correct title is selected in Configure Gamepad; MCC stores layouts per game.
- Different feel after changing display mode: on Series X|S, decide whether 60 Hz with adjustable FOV or 120 Hz with default FOV better suits your priorities, then tune again.
No official source establishes a single best numeric sensitivity for the collection. Treat numbers shared by other players as starting points only, not as a supported standard.
Remapping for modern controllers
Keep high-frequency actions on reachable controls
When editing a layout, prioritize actions used while aiming or moving. Jump, crouch, equipment, reload and melee should be reachable without repeatedly removing the right thumb from the camera stick. The exact best arrangement depends on the controller’s paddle, rear-button or accessibility hardware, so test the physical reach before committing to a match.

Verify every action after saving
- Open the in-game control display for the selected title.
- Press each face button, stick click, shoulder button and trigger once.
- Check movement, camera look, fire, aim, reload, melee, grenade or equipment actions, and menu navigation.
- Save again if any command is unassigned or duplicated unintentionally.
- Launch a private match to confirm that the on-screen prompts and actual actions agree.
If a preset feels familiar but one action is misplaced, edit that preset and save a Custom copy instead of rebuilding the entire scheme. Repeating this per title avoids the common mistake of correcting Halo 3 while leaving Halo: Reach or Halo 4 unchanged.
Accessibility and local multiplayer
Xbox Adaptive Controller and Copilot
MCC’s official accessibility documentation points players to the Xbox Adaptive Controller and the Copilot controller-link option. These are supported paths for players who need alternate switches, a second controller sharing input, or a different physical control arrangement. Configure the Xbox system-level hardware first, then use MCC’s Gamepad preference and per-game remapping to confirm that the resulting device is recognized as the intended controller.
Split-screen requirements
Halo Support’s quick-start guide says local split-screen on one Xbox requires an Xbox controller for each participant and supports up to four local players. Connect and sign in every controller before launching the local session, then assign each player at the game setup screen. Local split-screen is distinct from online cross-play; it does not require the other players to be on PC or another console.

Troubleshooting controller and matchmaking failures
The game puts me in mouse-and-keyboard matchmaking
- Leave the playlist search.
- Open Options & Career → Settings → Control.
- Set Preferred Input Device to Gamepad.
- Confirm that the controller responds in the Controls screen.
- Restart the matchmaking search.
On PC, check whether you recently used Restore to Default Settings; that command can set the preferred input back to Mouse & Keyboard. On Steam Deck, also verify the launch option and restart the game if anti-cheat mode was selected incorrectly.

My controller works in menus but not in a match
- Confirm that the desired game is selected under Configure Gamepad, not just another MCC title.
- Load the saved Custom layout again.
- Disconnect duplicate virtual, wireless or keyboard devices temporarily so MCC sees one intended gamepad.
- Test the controller in a private match before returning to matchmaking.
My settings disappeared after a reset
Recreate or reselect the Custom layout, then set Preferred Input Device to Gamepad. The PC reset behavior documented in the December 2020 notes changes the input preference even when the controller itself remains connected.

FOV will not change on my Xbox
Check the console output refresh rate. The Series X|S FOV range of 70–120 degrees is available with 60 Hz output; at 120 Hz the slider is locked to the default. This is an output-mode limitation, not a failed controller setting.
Matchmaking is slow or unavailable after an update
Install the current MCC update on every platform. The September 17, 2025 maintenance patch addressed a cross-platform matchmaking issue and required downloads for Xbox and Steam in addition to the Xbox PC and Microsoft Store versions. Once updated, recheck Gamepad preference and retry the search.
Version and documentation notes
Halo Support documentation identifies updated game version 1.3073.0.0 in its controls material. Menu wording can evolve with later patches, but the relevant concepts remain the same: Preferred Input Device is in the main-menu Control settings, and per-title remapping is under Configure Gamepad. If a label differs slightly on your build, look for those two functions rather than relying on a copied sensitivity profile.
