2. OBS: a self-managed, free encoder
YouTube lists OBS as free, open-source encoder software. YouTube describes the encoder’s role simply: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” With OBS, the channel owner controls the computer and stream setup rather than handing the looping job to a cloud provider. This can suit occasional scheduled programming or a technically confident operator; for unattended continuous streaming, the computer, OBS, and a reliable connection must keep working.
Set up a prerecorded stream through OBS
- Enable live streaming on YouTube. In YouTube Studio, start a live stream setup. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become enabled, according to YouTube Help.
- Create or open the live control room. Select the streaming option in YouTube Studio and obtain the Live server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to stream to your channel.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube if available, and connect the account or use the provided server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the server URL and key workflow: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Add the prerecorded material. Add a media source for a video file, or arrange multiple sources into scenes and manage their playback. For a repeating program, configure the source or playlist workflow to repeat, then verify the transition and audio before going live. OBS and YouTube interface labels can change; confirm the current controls in the installed OBS version.
- Check output before starting. Match the output resolution and frame rate to the source and the connection you can sustain. Set a bitrate appropriate to the chosen resolution and frame rate, and use a keyframe interval of two seconds where YouTube’s current encoder guidance specifies it. Avoid increasing bitrate simply to claim a higher quality: a bitrate beyond the upload connection’s stable capacity can cause dropped frames or disconnections. Check YouTube’s current guidance for the resolution and frame rate you plan to send.
- Start and monitor the stream. Start streaming in OBS, then confirm the preview and stream health in YouTube Studio before relying on unattended playback. A local encoder route needs a recovery plan for power, network, computer, or software interruptions.
Hardware and operating costs
A dedicated computer is optional, not a requirement for cloud streaming. It is a conditional purchase if you choose to run OBS continuously; the available evidence does not establish a particular mini PC model, minimum specification, or price for reliable unattended use. 3. Gyre and other hosted cloud encoders
Gyre
Gyre describes a workflow in which you upload video files to its storage, arrange them into a playlist, connect a YouTube account, schedule a stream, and let the playlist repeat on its cloud infrastructure. That means the creator’s computer can be off. Gyre advertises a seven-day trial and paid plans with varying simultaneous-stream, resolution, and storage limits; confirm the current terms and prices on Gyre’s site, since these details are time-sensitive.
Upstream
YouTube’s verified encoder directory also lists Upstream. That establishes only that it appears in the directory, not how its current playlist workflow, destinations, plans, limits, or reliability compare with Gyre or another provider. Check those details with the service before committing.

How to choose for Tamil devotional programming
- Start with the content library. Decide whether the stream will consist of bhajans, devotional music, temple footage, recorded puja, or another mix of material. Check that the service’s upload and playlist workflow suits how often you replace, reorder, or schedule recordings.
- Confirm every right before broadcasting. Make sure you have permission for each song, recording, image, and video. A recording already uploaded to YouTube is not automatically cleared for rebroadcast, and a live format does not prevent copyright claims. The copyright safety checklist is a useful preparation aid, not a substitute for rights clearance.
- Choose destinations deliberately. If YouTube is your only destination, a YouTube-focused workflow may be enough. If you need other platforms, verify that the service supports those destinations; do not assume that a YouTube encoder listing means it streams elsewhere.
- Match automation to the program. A continuous loop of prerecorded devotional content differs from an interactive live worship event. For the latter, a camera or live production setup is needed; prerecorded-video looping services do not turn a camera feed into a live production.
- Compare capacity and terms. Check simultaneous streams, resolution, storage, scheduling, trial conditions, supported destinations, and current billing on each provider’s own site. For a self-managed route, include hardware, power, connection, and maintenance in the cost calculation.
What continuous streaming does—and does not—establish
A continuously available devotional playlist can provide a convenient way for viewers to find programming at different times. The available evidence does not establish that continuous streaming improves YouTube recommendations, watch time, or monetization for Tamil devotional channels. Gyre’s homepage advertises claims about growth, viewing duration, and time to monetization, but presents them as its own marketing figures without an identified study, sample, or methodology; they should not be treated as independent findings or expected results.
