Best Guild Wars 2 Content Path for Returning Players Who Missed Living World Seasons

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Follow Guild Wars 2’s release order. Start with the core personal story, then Living World Season 1, Season 2, Heart of Thorns, Season 3, Path of Fire, Season 4, the Icebrood Saga (Season 5), End of Dragons, Secrets of the Obscure, Janthir Wilds, and Visions of Eternity. This sequence preserves the narrative setup, map and mastery context, and rewards progression that returning players miss when they jump directly to a newer expansion.

Season 1 is permanently free. Seasons 2 through 5 are separate unlocks unless they are already on your account or included in a qualifying bundle. Season 3 requires Heart of Thorns, while Season 4 and the Icebrood Saga require Path of Fire.

The recommended Guild Wars 2 story path

The safest catch-up plan is to continue through the game in published release order and stop at the newest content you actually own. Do not buy random episodes first or jump straight to the latest expansion unless reaching current systems matters more to you than following the story.

Order Content Ownership or prerequisite Reason to play here
1 Core personal story Base game content Establishes the character and world before the Living World narrative begins.
2 Living World Season 1 Permanently free First post-launch continuation of the character’s story.
3 Living World Season 2 Separate unlock unless already claimed or bundled Builds the Elder Dragon setup before the first expansion.
4 Heart of Thorns Expansion ownership required First expansion chapter and the next major story block.
5 Living World Season 3 Requires Heart of Thorns; separate unlock unless bundled Follows Heart of Thorns and carries its story and progression forward.
6 Path of Fire Expansion ownership required Continues directly after Season 3.
7 Living World Season 4 Requires Path of Fire; separate unlock unless bundled Extends the Path of Fire storyline.
8 The Icebrood Saga (Living World Season 5) Requires Path of Fire; separate unlock unless bundled Follows Season 4 and leads into the next expansion.
9 End of Dragons Expansion ownership required Resolves the Elder Dragon Saga’s next major phase.
10 Secrets of the Obscure Packaged with its respective expansion rather than the older standalone Living World model Begins the post-End of Dragons release structure.
11 Janthir Wilds Packaged with its respective expansion Continue in release order after Secrets of the Obscure.
12 Visions of Eternity Packaged with its respective expansion Latest step in the sequence covered here.

The table is a story route, not a demand to purchase everything at once. Your account may already contain some of these entries, so the practical route is to identify the first missing block and proceed from there.

Why release order is the best choice

It preserves the character and Elder Dragon setup

Season 1 and Season 2 sit between the core personal story and Heart of Thorns for a reason. They establish the characters, conflicts, and Elder Dragon situation that the first expansion assumes. Starting with Heart of Thorns can make the expansion playable, but it removes the narrative build-up that explains why the campaign matters.

Each expansion is followed by the relevant Living World material

Heart of Thorns is followed by Season 3. Path of Fire is followed by Season 4 and then the Icebrood Saga. Treating those seasons as optional side stories creates gaps in both plot and progression context. The episodes also contribute map access and episode-specific rewards, so skipping them changes more than the order in which cutscenes appear.

The post-End of Dragons model is different

Secrets of the Obscure, Janthir Wilds, and Visions of Eternity are packaged with their respective expansions rather than using the older standalone Living World-season model. A returning player therefore should not expect every post-End of Dragons chapter to be bought as a separate season pack.

What to check before spending anything

Audit the Story Journal

  1. Open the in-game Story Journal.
  2. Check which entries for Seasons 1 through 5 and each expansion are already unlocked on the account.
  3. Mark the earliest missing item in the release-order table.
  4. Check whether a later season is available through an account bundle before buying an individual episode.

This audit prevents the two most common catch-up mistakes: paying twice for content already claimed and buying a season that cannot be started because its expansion prerequisite is missing.

Separate access from recommended order

Ownership gates and story order are not identical. Season 3 has the explicit Heart of Thorns requirement. Season 4 and the Icebrood Saga have the explicit Path of Fire requirement. Season 2 should still be played before Heart of Thorns for continuity, even though the relevant prerequisite information does not identify Heart of Thorns as a Season 2 requirement.

Which purchase route fits your account?

There are three practical ways to assemble the missing content. The right one depends on how much you already own and whether you want the fewest transactions or the smallest immediate purchase.

Route Best for Coverage Upfront-spend pattern Trade-off
Elder Dragon Saga—Complete Collection Players missing most of the Elder Dragon Saga First three expansions plus Living World Seasons 2–5 One larger purchase covering the legacy block Simplest ownership decision, but unnecessary if your account already owns much of that block.
Staged purchases Players who own some expansions or want to buy only the next block The next required expansion and its relevant Living World Season Complete Pack Smaller purchases made as you reach each story segment Minimizes immediate spending, but requires an account audit and more purchase decisions.
Individual episodes Players missing only one episode or seeking a very specific chapter Selected episodes rather than a full season Pay only for the episodes selected Practical for a narrow gap, less convenient when buying an entire season.

When the Complete Collection is the sensible shortcut

If you missed most of the Elder Dragon Saga, the Elder Dragon Saga—Complete Collection is the cleanest ownership route because it combines the first three expansions with Living World Seasons 2–5. It removes the need to assemble the legacy sequence one season at a time and ensures that the expansion prerequisites are covered together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That convenience does not make it automatically the cheapest option for every account. If Heart of Thorns, Path of Fire, End of Dragons, or one or more seasons are already unlocked, buying the entire collection can duplicate content you do not need. Check the Story Journal first.

When staged purchases are better

Staged buying is the better fit when your account has a partial history. Buy only the next missing expansion and the Living World Season Complete Pack that follows it, then play that block before deciding on the next one. This approach limits immediate spending and keeps every purchase tied to a story decision.

For example, an account that owns Heart of Thorns but not the following content should look at Season 3 before buying Path of Fire. An account that owns Path of Fire should check Season 4 and the Icebrood Saga before purchasing End of Dragons. The exact cart depends on what the Story Journal shows as unlocked.

When an individual episode makes sense

Episodes can be purchased individually. That is useful when only one chapter is missing or when you are restoring a specific gap in an otherwise complete season. If you are buying an entire season, the complete season pack is the practical route because it avoids assembling the season episode by episode.

A step-by-step catch-up plan

Step 1: Record your current stopping point

Use the Story Journal to identify the latest story entry you can start and the first unavailable entry after it. Do not rely on memory from an old character or on which map you last visited; account unlocks determine what you can actually launch.

Step 2: Fill the earliest gap

Purchase the first missing expansion or season block in the release-order table. If the missing block is one of Seasons 2–5, verify its expansion prerequisite before checkout. Season 1 does not require a purchase because it is permanently free.

Step 3: Play the block before moving forward

Finish the available story in order rather than alternating between unrelated expansions. This keeps character developments, Elder Dragon context, map access, mastery context, and episode rewards attached to the chapter that introduced them.

Step 4: Recheck ownership after each block

After completing a season and its following expansion, return to the Story Journal and confirm the next entry. This is especially useful for accounts assembled through older purchases, qualifying bundles, or individual episode unlocks.

Step 5: Continue until the newest owned expansion

Stop at the latest content already on the account, or buy the next block when you are ready. For post-End of Dragons content, look for the corresponding expansion package rather than assuming a separate Living World season purchase is required.

What you lose by skipping Living World episodes

A player focused only on reaching current endgame can skip some optional episodes mechanically. That shortcut is a deliberate trade-off, not a neutral change of order.

  • Story continuity: major developments between expansions may be missing.
  • Map access: skipping a season can mean missing the maps associated with that episode.
  • Mastery context: later systems may make more sense when the earlier content that frames them has been played.
  • Episode-specific rewards: rewards tied to an episode are not automatically replaced by rushing ahead.
  • Purchase clarity: jumping around makes it harder to tell which season or expansion is actually missing.

If your priority is understanding the returning-player story, preserve release order. If your priority is reaching a current endgame environment as quickly as possible, you can move ahead with the content you own and return to skipped episodes later, accepting those losses in context and rewards.

Answers to common returning-player questions

What order should I play the Living World seasons?

Play Season 1, then Season 2, then Heart of Thorns, Season 3, Path of Fire, Season 4, and the Icebrood Saga, before moving to End of Dragons and the later expansion packages. The seasons are best understood as bridges around the expansions, not as a separate playlist to complete after all expansions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need Living World Season 2 before Heart of Thorns?

You should play it first for the intended narrative setup. The stated expansion prerequisite applies to Season 3 and later blocks, not to Season 2. In other words, Season 2 is a story-order recommendation before Heart of Thorns, while Season 3 is also an ownership requirement tied to Heart of Thorns.

Which expansions include Living World?

The Elder Dragon Saga—Complete Collection includes the first three expansions and Living World Seasons 2–5. Later content uses a different packaging model: Secrets of the Obscure, Janthir Wilds, and Visions of Eternity are packaged with their respective expansions rather than following the older standalone-season structure.

What is the cheapest way to catch up?

There is no single cheapest cart without checking your account and the prices available to your region. Missing most of the legacy content points toward the Elder Dragon Saga—Complete Collection because it covers the whole block in one purchase. A partially progressed account can minimize immediate spending by buying only the next required expansion and the relevant season pack. Individual episodes are the narrowest purchase when only one chapter is missing.

Can I buy a season before its expansion?

Season 3 requires Heart of Thorns. Season 4 and the Icebrood Saga require Path of Fire. Check those prerequisites before purchasing. Season 1 is permanently free, and Seasons 2–5 otherwise use separate unlocks unless the account already has them or they arrive through a qualifying bundle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I buy every season before playing?

No. First identify what is already unlocked, then buy the next missing block. The release-order path tells you what to play; it does not require a single all-at-once purchase. The complete collection is the simplest route for a player missing most of the Elder Dragon Saga, while staged buying is more appropriate for a partially complete account.

A practical decision rule

Use this sequence when deciding what to do next:

  1. Missing nearly everything through End of Dragons: compare the Elder Dragon Saga—Complete Collection with your account’s existing unlocks; it is designed to cover the first three expansions and Seasons 2–5 together.
  2. Own some expansions: buy only the next required expansion and its following Living World Season Complete Pack.
  3. Missing one chapter: buy the individual episode if you do not need the rest of that season.
  4. Already through End of Dragons: continue with Secrets of the Obscure, Janthir Wilds, and Visions of Eternity through their respective expansion packages.
  5. Want endgame access immediately: skip only with the explicit understanding that story continuity, maps, mastery context, and episode rewards will be incomplete.

The result is a catch-up plan that is both economical and coherent: audit the account, purchase the earliest missing block, play in release order, and treat each expansion’s surrounding Living World content as part of the path rather than disposable filler.
