Start with Realistic Driving V if you want one handling change to affect the widest possible range of GTA V vehicles. It adjusts acceleration curves, top speed, braking, grip, handling characteristics, wheelspin and off-road behavior. Choose Complete Driving Overhaul V for another handling.meta-based overhaul, Forza-Style Handling Overhaul when its stated 53-vehicle coverage fits the cars you drive, or True Realistic Driving V when you specifically want added mass and inertia. For the most simulator-like result on PC, combine a suitable handling mod with a USB racing wheel, pedals and a manual-transmission script.
Keep every combination in Story Mode. Script Hook V and the scripts that depend on it are not for GTA Online, and Rockstar’s single-player mod tolerance does not extend to using modified files online.

Which GTA V driving mod should you choose?
The right choice depends on whether you want a fleet-wide physics change, a focused vehicle pack, more convincing weight transfer, or a complete simulator-style control setup. The projects below solve different problems rather than competing on one universal realism scale.
| Mod or setup | Primary scope | Best fit | Important requirement or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Realistic Driving V | Broad handling changes across the game’s vehicle fleet | Players who want less arcade-like acceleration, braking, grip and off-road behavior without tuning every car individually | Check the project page for the GTA V edition and build it supports before installation |
| Complete Driving Overhaul V | Complete handling.meta overhaul | Players seeking an alternative whole-game handling philosophy | Back up handling.meta before replacing or editing it |
| Forza-Style Handling Overhaul | Selected vehicles; the project description states coverage for 53 vehicles | Players whose regular cars are among those supported and who want a Forza-style feel | Coverage is limited to the vehicles listed by the project; it is not a universal fleet overhaul |
| True Realistic Driving V | Mass and inertia behavior | Players who want acceleration forces and weight transfer to matter more | The author recommends pairing it with Realistic Driving V or another handling.meta mod |
| GTAVManualTransmission with a wheel | Input, gears and force feedback | PC players with a USB steering wheel and pedals who want simulator-style control | Requires ScriptHookV; the documented project identifies Gears.asi as the actual script and supports GTA V build 1604 and newer |
| Manual Transmission V | Rebuilt gearbox and manual-driving systems | Players wanting gear-dependent acceleration, improved neutral and reverse behavior, and motorcycle support | Requires ScriptHookV and ScriptHookVDotNet; confirm support for your game edition |
If you do not own a wheel, begin with Realistic Driving V or Complete Driving Overhaul V. A controller can still benefit from more measured grip and braking, while a keyboard generally exposes the limits of an aggressive handling setup because its steering and throttle inputs are digital.

What makes GTA V feel less arcade-like?
Realism is not one slider. A convincing road car needs several systems to agree: the engine should build speed through a believable acceleration curve, the tires should lose and regain grip progressively, braking should require weight management, and a heavy vehicle should not change direction as if it were weightless. Off-road behavior also matters; a car that remains glued to dirt or grass can feel artificial even when its road handling is restrained.
Acceleration and top speed
Acceleration curves determine how quickly a car gathers speed at different points in its rev range. A realistic curve usually makes low-speed traction and gear choice more meaningful than simply assigning every car a high top-speed value. Top speed still matters, but it should not be the only measure of a handling overhaul. Two cars can share a maximum speed and feel completely different if one reaches it smoothly while the other spins its tires or surges forward unrealistically.
Braking and grip
Braking changes are most noticeable when entering a corner. More credible braking makes speed planning important and exposes the difference between a straight-line stop and a stable corner entry. Grip settings affect steering response, wheelspin and how quickly a slide develops. Excessive grip can make every car feel like a track vehicle; too little can turn ordinary traffic into an uncontrollable drift exercise. A good setup should preserve a recoverable transition rather than switching instantly between perfect traction and a spin.

Mass, inertia and weight transfer
True Realistic Driving V targets a gap the project describes in the base game: vehicle mass is not adequately represented in the way the author wants. It adds inertia forces based on acceleration, so launching, stopping and changing direction can produce more noticeable body movement. This is a different target from simply changing tire grip. A car can have realistic grip values and still feel weightless; adding inertia addresses that sensation.
Off-road behavior
Suspension and surface response determine whether a vehicle behaves plausibly away from asphalt. Realistic Driving V lists off-road behavior among its affected areas. Expect dirt, grass and uneven surfaces to alter available traction and control rather than acting like cosmetic scenery. The exact result depends on the vehicle and the other handling files installed alongside it.
Realistic Driving V: the broad starting point
Realistic Driving V is the most straightforward recommendation when your goal is a game-wide change rather than a hand-picked collection of cars. Its project description says it changes driving physics to be as realistic as possible and specifically calls out acceleration curves, top speed, braking, grip, handling characteristics, wheelspin and off-road behavior.
Why choose it
- It addresses several realism dimensions in one handling package instead of concentrating only on gearboxes or inertia.
- It is suited to players who regularly switch between sports cars, sedans, trucks and off-road vehicles.
- It can provide the foundation for a more specialized setup, including the mass and inertia behavior of True Realistic Driving V.
What to check first
Handling mods are version-sensitive. Confirm whether the current download targets GTA V Legacy, GTA V Enhanced, or both, and verify the supported game build immediately before installing. A file that worked on an earlier build can produce broken physics, missing vehicles or a failed launch after an update even when the mod’s name has not changed.

Complete Driving Overhaul V: a handling.meta alternative
Complete Driving Overhaul V is another whole-game option, but its defining feature is the complete handling.meta overhaul described by its author. That makes the file itself central to the installation and to conflict diagnosis.
Protect your original handling data
Make a copy of the original handling.meta before changing anything. Keep the backup outside the modded file location and label it with the game edition and date. If another mod later replaces the same file, you can restore a known-good version instead of trying to reconstruct individual values.
When it is the better choice
Choose this project when you prefer its handling philosophy or when another mod’s vehicle coverage does not suit your regular cars. Do not install it on top of a second full handling.meta replacement without a plan: the later file can overwrite the earlier one, leaving you unable to tell which physics values are active.
Forza-Style Handling Overhaul: focused coverage
Forza-Style Handling Overhaul is the narrower, newer option in this group. Its 2026 Nexus description states that it covers 53 vehicles and presents the project as a Forza-style driving experience, with access to RT Handling Editor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck the vehicle list before installing
The stated 53-vehicle figure belongs to this project’s own coverage, not to GTA V’s entire fleet or to a community-wide compatibility test. Compare the published vehicle list with the cars you actually use. If your favorite vehicles are absent, the game may feel inconsistent: modified cars can respond one way while untouched traffic or mission vehicles retain the original handling.
Why the narrower scope can help
A selected-vehicle overhaul can be preferable when you want to tune a personal garage rather than change every vehicle in Story Mode. It also gives you a smaller set of cars to validate after an update. RT Handling Editor access may appeal to players who want to adjust values themselves, but editing increases the need for backups and one-change-at-a-time testing.
True Realistic Driving V: add mass and inertia
True Realistic Driving V is best treated as a specialist add-on rather than a complete replacement for every handling value. Its description says GTA V does not take vehicle mass into account in the desired way and adds inertia forces derived from acceleration. The project recommends using it with Realistic Driving V or another handling.meta mod for maximum realism.

What it changes in practice
- Acceleration can create a stronger sense of the vehicle’s body being pushed backward.
- Braking and direction changes can feel less instantaneous because the car’s movement carries more momentum.
- Heavy vehicles may feel more distinct from light vehicles, provided the underlying handling values are compatible.
Because it affects a different layer of the driving feel, combine it only after establishing a stable base handling setup. If the result becomes difficult to control, remove the add-on first; that isolates inertia from tire, brake and steering changes.

Manual transmission and wheel support
Handling files change how the car behaves, but they do not by themselves turn GTA V into a driving simulator. The strongest simulator-style path on PC combines a handling overhaul with a physical steering wheel, pedals and a manual-transmission script.
GTAVManualTransmission
The GTAVManualTransmission project documents steering-wheel support, force feedback and wheel setup. Its README lists GTA V build 1604 and newer and identifies Gears.asi as the actual script. ScriptHookV is required. A USB racing wheel with separate pedals is the most relevant optional accessory because it provides continuous steering, throttle and brake input rather than keyboard-style on/off commands.
Manual Transmission V
Manual Transmission V describes a rebuilt gearbox system with gear-dependent acceleration, improved neutral and reverse behavior, motorcycle compatibility, and requirements for ScriptHookV and ScriptHookVDotNet. This makes it useful when the gearbox itself is the main source of artificial behavior, especially if you want motorcycles included in the same driving setup.
Wheel setup sequence
- Install the wheel manufacturer’s driver and calibrate the wheel’s center, rotation range and pedal travel in Windows before launching the game.
- Verify that GTA V recognizes the device and that the wheel is connected before starting the script-dependent setup.
- Install the required ScriptHookV components for your supported game build, then add only one manual-transmission script.
- Map steering, throttle, brake, clutch if supported, gear up, gear down, neutral and reverse. Leave a keyboard fallback for menus and emergency recovery.
- Enable force feedback conservatively on the first launch. Increase strength only after checking that the wheel does not oscillate or clip at full steering lock.
- Test in a quiet Story Mode area with a standard car, then check a rear-wheel-drive car, a front-wheel-drive car and a motorcycle if your chosen script supports them.
Do not assume that a wheel script fixes every handling issue. It improves the input model and feedback; acceleration, braking, tire grip and inertia still come from the handling files and the vehicle’s native behavior.

A controlled installation is more valuable than adding many realism features at once. The goal is to make every change reversible and every conflict identifiable.
Prepare a clean baseline
- Start with a working, unmodified Story Mode installation and confirm that the game launches normally.
- Record whether you are using GTA V Legacy or Enhanced and note the installed build number.
- Back up handling.meta before replacing or editing it. Also preserve the original files required by any script installation.
- Read the current project page for each mod and confirm its supported edition, build and dependencies.
Add one handling package
- Install either Realistic Driving V, Complete Driving Overhaul V, or the selected-vehicle Forza-Style Handling Overhaul first.
- Launch Story Mode and test several vehicle classes: a normal sedan, a sports car, a heavy vehicle and an off-road vehicle.
- Check acceleration, braking, corner entry, wheelspin, surface changes and recovery from a slide.
- Keep the setup only if the result matches your objective. Otherwise restore the backup before trying a different base overhaul.
Add specialist behavior
After the base handling package is stable, add True Realistic Driving V if you want more mass and inertia. Test the same vehicles again. Finally add a manual-transmission script and wheel support if required. This order prevents a gearbox or input problem from being mistaken for a handling.meta problem.

Keep a change log
Write down the mod name, version shown on its page, game build, installation date and files replaced. When a game update breaks the setup, the log tells you exactly which files to remove and which backup to restore.
Compatibility: Legacy, Enhanced and game updates
GTA V mod compatibility is not permanent. A project can support one edition while another remains untested, and ScriptHookV-based scripts can stop working when Rockstar changes the executable. Treat every update as a compatibility checkpoint rather than assuming an older installation remains valid.

The game crashes before Story Mode loads
Remove the newest mod or script first, then restore the backed-up handling.meta. If the clean game launches, add files back individually. A missing dependency, an unsupported ScriptHookV build or two mods replacing the same file are the most likely categories of failure.
Cars feel unchanged
Confirm that the mod targets the vehicle you are testing and that its handling file is the active one. A selected-vehicle project will not necessarily alter every car. A second handling.meta replacement may also have overwritten the first installation.
Steering is twitchy or force feedback is harsh
Recalibrate the wheel, reduce steering sensitivity and lower force-feedback strength. Check for duplicate wheel mappings and test with a single manual-transmission script. Digital keyboard steering can exaggerate the same problem, so compare with a controller or the wheel before changing physics values.

Performance or stability worsened after combining mods
Handling.meta replacements generally alter physics data, while scripts add runtime behavior. Remove the newest script first, then the inertia add-on, and retest. Keeping the base overhaul separate from optional systems makes the cause easier to identify.
GTA Online safety
Script Hook V is described by the OpenIV Team as the library that allows custom ASI plugins to use GTA V script native functions. The same documentation states that it does not work in GTA Online. PC Gamer’s guidance likewise distinguishes permitted single-player modification from using mods online.
Use a separate, unmodded installation or remove and disable mod files before returning to GTA Online. Never test whether a Story Mode script happens to load online. Online enforcement, game updates and account risk are outside the control of a handling-mod author, so the safe boundary is simple: modded files stay in Story Mode.
A practical realism build
For most PC players, use this progression:
- Install Realistic Driving V as the broad base and validate several vehicle classes.
- Add True Realistic Driving V if the cars still feel too light or direction changes lack inertia.
- Add GTAVManualTransmission or Manual Transmission V only when you specifically want manual gears.
- Connect and calibrate a wheel and pedals if you want continuous steering and braking input.
- Keep a clean backup and a written change log, then recheck edition and build support after every GTA V update.
Choose Complete Driving Overhaul V instead of Realistic Driving V when its handling.meta approach better matches your preference. Choose Forza-Style Handling Overhaul when the project’s stated 53-vehicle list contains the cars you care about and you want its narrower, editor-friendly approach.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
The named project pages describe features, supported components and, in one case, vehicle coverage. They do not publish a robust adoption statistic, performance benchmark or standardized handling test that would justify ranking one mod by measured lap times or frame-rate impact. The recommendations here therefore reflect each project’s stated scope and requirements, not a claimed hands-on benchmark.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use these mods with a controller instead of a wheel?
Yes. Handling overhauls change vehicle physics independently of the input device. A controller provides analog steering and throttle, while a keyboard remains digital and can make realistic grip or braking changes feel more abrupt.
Do I need every mod in the list for realistic driving?
No. Use one base handling overhaul first. Add the inertia project or a manual-transmission script only when that specific behavior is missing from your setup.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Why does a 53-vehicle mod not change every car I drive?
The 53-vehicle figure is the coverage stated by Forza-Style Handling Overhaul. Vehicles outside its published list can retain their original handling.
What should I do if a GTA V update breaks my scripts?
Disable the ScriptHookV-dependent files, launch the clean game, and wait for each project to confirm support for the new build before reinstalling scripts one at a time.
Is a racing wheel required for manual transmission scripts?
No. Manual-transmission scripts can be mapped to a controller or keyboard, but a wheel and pedals provide the continuous steering, throttle and brake control that makes the setup feel most like a simulator.
