Best GTA: San Andreas Settings for Modern PCs and Controllers

For most modern-PC players, the dependable setup is the original PC release with its executable patched to the latest available build, SilentPatch SA for stability, ThirteenAG’s Widescreen Fix for 16:9 or ultrawide displays, a 30 FPS external cap for completion-sensitive play, and GInput for an Xbox-style XInput controller. Start from a clean, backed-up game folder, change one thing at a time, and move to 60 FPS or visual enhancements only after missions, HUD scaling and input all work correctly.

Choose the setup that matches your priority

There is no single “best” configuration for every player. San Andreas behaves differently depending on whether you value original behavior, a correct widescreen presentation, completion-sensitive driving missions, or modern controller input. Decide on those priorities before installing anything so a fault can be traced to one change.

Setup Display Frame-rate target Input Modification depth Best for
Clean vanilla 4:3 or a correctly scaled 16:9 mode supplied by your build 30 FPS is the conservative choice Keyboard and mouse or the game’s native controller options None Testing a fresh installation and preserving original behavior
Essential modern PC Native monitor resolution with Widescreen Fix on 16:9 or ultrawide 30 FPS for completion; cautiously test 60 FPS GInput for an XInput pad SilentPatch SA, Widescreen Fix and GInput Most players who want stability, proper HUD geometry and modern controls
Visual enhancement Essential fixes plus carefully selected visual changes Use the stable cap established first Keyboard/mouse or GInput Essential fixes plus visual packs Players willing to troubleshoot conflicts and performance changes

The “essential modern PC” column is the sensible starting point. It separates fixes for different problems: SilentPatch SA targets PC-specific bugs, crashes, timing and compatibility, while Widescreen Fix corrects aspect ratio, field of view and interface placement. GInput handles modern XInput controller behavior. They can be used together, but install and test them separately.

Prepare the game before changing settings

Use a known executable

Begin with the original PC release and a current patched executable where possible. Rockstar Games Support recorded missing 16:9 resolutions in Steam version 3.0 and stated that the issue was resolved in the patch released on December 9, 2014 (the support article was updated February 6, 2024). If your copy is older, modified or from an uncertain source, launch it once and verify which executable the launcher actually starts before adding files.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Back up the two things that are expensive to recreate

  • Copy the entire game directory to a separate folder. This gives you a clean rollback if a plugin, configuration change or visual pack causes a crash.
  • Back up your save files separately. Keep the backup outside the game directory so an uninstall or file replacement cannot remove it.
  • Record your original display and controller settings. A short note makes it easier to undo a change without guessing.

Establish a clean baseline

  1. Start the unmodified game and confirm that it reaches the main menu and loads a save.
  2. Open the display options and select the monitor’s native resolution, then choose a widescreen mode only if the game offers one at the correct aspect ratio.
  3. Play for several minutes, enter a vehicle and load a mission. This baseline tells you whether a later problem existed before modifications.
  4. Exit normally before copying any patch or plugin into the folder.

Set the display correctly for 4:3, 16:9 and ultrawide screens

4:3 monitors

A 4:3 display can use the game’s native presentation without widescreen correction. Keep the monitor’s aspect setting at its normal, non-stretched mode if it offers one. If the image is being stretched by the monitor or driver, fix that scaling outside the game first; a game-side HUD edit cannot correct a display that is already distorting the whole frame.

16:9 monitors

Use the monitor’s native 16:9 resolution and a matching widescreen mode. Rockstar’s December 9, 2014 patch addressed the missing-16:9-resolution problem reported for Steam version 3.0, so update or verify the executable before assuming the resolution list is complete.

After the resolution is correct, add ThirteenAG’s Widescreen Fix. It addresses problems that a resolution switch alone does not: the HUD’s geometry, the game’s aspect-ratio calculations and the field of view. Install it only after confirming that the unmodified game launches, then test a save and a mission before adding anything else.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ultrawide monitors

Ultrawide modes need the same Widescreen Fix approach, but the extra horizontal space makes HUD placement more obvious. Check the radar, subtitles and mission text at the edges of the screen, not just the world view. A picture that fills the panel can still have an incorrectly scaled interface.

Basic display procedure

  1. Set the operating system or monitor to the panel’s native resolution and refresh mode.
  2. In San Andreas, select the matching resolution and enable the game’s widescreen option when available.
  3. Launch once and inspect the map, radar, subtitle area, pause menu and a vehicle’s camera. Look for circles appearing oval, text cut off, or the camera showing an unusually narrow view.
  4. Close the game and install Widescreen Fix in the game directory if the HUD, aspect ratio or field of view is still wrong.
  5. Open the fix’s configuration only after the default result is stable. Change one HUD value, test, and keep a note of the original value.

Configure the graphics options without creating new problems

Option Recommended starting point What to watch for
Resolution Native monitor resolution in the correct aspect ratio Wrong scaling can stretch the whole image or leave the HUD misplaced.
Widescreen Enabled for a genuine 16:9 or ultrawide display On a 4:3 display it can produce an unsuitable presentation; verify the shape of circular objects.
Mip mapping Enabled The guide notes that it affects only some textures, but it can reduce visible jagged edges on distant surfaces.
Anti-aliasing Start at 8x, as recommended by the guide If stability or frame pacing changes, lower it before changing several other options.
Visual FX quality Choose Low, Medium, High or Very High according to available GPU headroom Higher quality is not a substitute for a correct resolution or a stable frame-rate cap.

The manual exposes the Visual FX choices as Low, Medium, High and Very High. Select the highest level that leaves consistent frame pacing in normal play, then test a busy area and a mission. Because no universal benchmark is published for every modern PC, an exact “maximum” setting cannot be guaranteed from the game’s age alone.

Do not stack aggressive visual modifications on the first pass. If a crash appears after several packages are installed, you will not know which file caused it. Keep the base game, SilentPatch SA, Widescreen Fix and (if needed) GInput working before adding visual packs.

Pick a frame-rate target that will not break missions

Why the in-game limiter is not the default choice

The guide warns that San Andreas’ in-game frame limiter adds input delay. For a more responsive result, disable that limiter and use an external frame-rate cap when you need a fixed target. Keep the cap consistent rather than allowing the rate to swing between several values.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

30 FPS: the completion-first target

A stable 30 FPS is the safest target when your goal includes full completion. The guide reports that, in its tested setup, 30 FPS is required for 100% driving-school completion. It also identifies high-frame-rate handling problems that can make vehicles behave worse than expected, so 30 FPS is the least surprising choice for a first playthrough or a completion run.

60 FPS: usable, but test the missions that matter

Sixty FPS can feel smoother, but the guide reports unresolved edge cases: some vehicle handling remains worse, vehicles can shake, and the Fender Ketchup mission may require a workaround. Framerate Vigilante can improve high-FPS behavior, yet the guide still recommends caution above 60 FPS. Treat 60 FPS as an experiment after the 30 FPS baseline, not as a universal upgrade.

Frame-rate procedure

  1. Complete a clean test at a stable 30 FPS with no visual pack installed.
  2. Disable the game’s own limiter if it is adding noticeable latency.
  3. Apply an external cap at your chosen target and verify that the cap remains steady while driving, entering interiors and starting a mission.
  4. If you want 60 FPS, add Framerate Vigilante according to its current instructions, then retest vehicle handling and the driving-school events.
  5. Keep the 30 FPS profile available. Switching back is the practical recovery step if a mission behaves incorrectly.

No independent performance benchmark table is available for different modern CPUs or GPUs, so an exact FPS guarantee cannot be given. The two evidence-based practical targets are 30 FPS for completion-sensitive play and 60 FPS as a usable but less certain target with Framerate Vigilante.

Install a modern Xbox-style controller with GInput

What GInput changes

GInput is the practical option for modern Xbox-style XInput pads. The guide describes its support as comparable to the console versions and identifies the files that must be placed in the game directory. A USB or otherwise XInput-compatible controller is therefore the most direct hardware choice when you want modern analog sticks, triggers and familiar prompts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Installation steps

  1. Close San Andreas and the launcher that starts it.
  2. Back up the game directory and saves.
  3. Obtain the current GInput package from its maintained distribution, then open the archive without running the game.
  4. Copy the models folder, GinputSA.asi and GinputSA.ini into the game directory. Keep the folder name and file names exactly as supplied.
  5. Connect the USB/XInput controller before launching the game. Confirm that the operating system sees the pad and that its sticks and triggers respond.
  6. Start San Andreas and check the controller options. Confirm the button prompts and enable any modern-control option exposed by your build or the installed configuration.
  7. Test walking, aiming, driving, camera control and menu navigation. Do not judge the installation only from the title screen.

Controller symptoms and fixes

  • No response: close the game, verify that the three required GInput items are directly in the game directory rather than inside an extra archive folder, then reconnect the controller before relaunching.
  • Wrong prompts: check whether the game is still using a legacy controller mode. Reopen the controller options and confirm the modern-control setting after GInput loads.
  • Sticks or triggers feel incorrect: test the pad as an XInput device first. A controller presenting only a different input standard may need a separate compatibility layer, which is outside the GInput procedure documented here.
  • Input works in menus but not in vehicles: test a complete driving sequence and inspect the frame-rate cap. High-FPS vehicle behavior can feel like an input fault even when the pad is recognized.

Fix an oversized or badly centered HUD

Widescreen Fix exposes configuration values for HUD width and height, radar scaling and subtitle scaling. Use those controls only after the default widescreen result is working; otherwise you can mistake a basic installation problem for a scaling problem.

Move the interface without shrinking it

The guide documents optional zero-scale edits that move the HUD toward the sides of a wide display without reducing its size. These are preference settings, not universal recommendations. A player sitting close to an ultrawide panel may prefer a smaller scale, while someone who wants console-like readability may prefer the original size moved outward.

  1. Open the Widescreen Fix configuration file after closing the game.
  2. Change one category at a time: HUD width and height, radar, then subtitles.
  3. Use a saved game with a visible radar and subtitles so every change is easy to evaluate.
  4. Save the configuration, launch, and test both gameplay and a pause/menu screen.
  5. If text is cut off or the radar is too far from the action, restore the previous value from your backup and try a smaller adjustment.

Recommended installation order

  1. Clean executable: verify that the original PC release launches and that your build is patched. The December 9, 2014 Steam patch is the documented fix for the missing-16:9-resolution issue in version 3.0.
  2. Baseline settings: choose native resolution, mip mapping on, 8x anti-aliasing as a starting point, and an appropriate Visual FX level.
  3. SilentPatch SA: install and test for crashes, timing and compatibility improvements before adding another plugin.
  4. Widescreen Fix: add it for 16:9 or ultrawide displays and verify HUD, radar, subtitles and field of view.
  5. Frame-rate cap: establish a stable 30 FPS profile first. Only then test a 60 FPS profile, with Framerate Vigilante if desired.
  6. GInput: copy the models folder, GinputSA.asi and GinputSA.ini, then test every major controller action.
  7. Optional visuals: add one visual change at a time and retain the last known-good folder backup.

This order keeps each modification attributable. If the game stops launching, remove the last addition or restore the clean folder instead of deleting random files.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The desired widescreen resolution is missing

Check the executable and patch level first. Steam version 3.0 had a documented missing-16:9-resolution issue that Rockstar said was resolved in the December 9, 2014 patch. If your launcher is using a different or older executable, update or verify that build before installing a widescreen plugin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The image fills the screen but looks stretched

Confirm that the selected resolution has the monitor’s actual aspect ratio and that the display is not applying an additional stretch mode. Then install Widescreen Fix and inspect circles, the radar and the pause menu. A full-screen image is not proof that the aspect ratio is correct.

The HUD is huge, centered or partly off-screen

Use Widescreen Fix’s HUD width/height, radar and subtitle controls. Apply one edit at a time and keep the original configuration so you can revert. The optional zero-scale approach moves elements outward without shrinking them; it is a preference choice rather than a required fix.

The game crashes after modifications

Restore the last known-good game-directory backup, then reinstall only the essential fix that was being tested. Confirm the clean executable launches before adding the next component. Avoid installing several visual packs or plugins simultaneously because their interaction prevents reliable diagnosis.

Vehicles shake or a mission behaves strangely at 60 FPS

Return to the stable 30 FPS profile and replay the mission. The guide specifically reports vehicle shaking, degraded handling and a possible Fender Ketchup workaround at 60 FPS, while noting that Framerate Vigilante improves but does not eliminate every high-FPS edge case.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The controller is detected but controls feel delayed

Check whether the game’s in-game frame limiter is enabled. The guide warns that it adds input delay. Disable it and apply a consistent external cap, then compare the same movement at 30 FPS. This separates controller recognition from frame-pacing latency.

Practical profiles for common players

Player Settings Reason
First playthrough on a 16:9 monitor Native 16:9 resolution, widescreen enabled, mip mapping on, 8x anti-aliasing starting point, moderate Visual FX, SilentPatch SA and Widescreen Fix, 30 FPS cap Correct presentation and the fewest mission-related surprises
100% completion attempt Widescreen Fix if needed, 30 FPS external cap, no aggressive visual pack, keyboard/mouse or tested GInput pad The guide reports 30 FPS as required for 100% driving-school completion in its setup
Console-style controller player SilentPatch SA, Widescreen Fix for the display, GInput with the three required files, modern-control option confirmed, 30 FPS first Modern XInput behavior while retaining a conservative mission profile
Smoothness experimenter Stable baseline first, then Framerate Vigilante and an external 60 FPS cap Lets you evaluate high-FPS benefits while preserving a known-good 30 FPS fallback
Ultrawide enthusiast Native ultrawide resolution, Widescreen Fix, HUD/radar/subtitle tuning, then optional visuals Addresses both the world view and interface placement instead of stretching a 16:9 image

What cannot be guaranteed from a generic settings guide

  • Exact FPS on your PC: the cited guidance does not publish a universal benchmark table, and frame pacing depends on the executable, display mode, plugins and driver behavior.
  • Identical launcher behavior: Steam and other launch paths can use different builds or file locations. Verify the executable that actually starts the game.
  • Permanent mod compatibility: download packages and controller mappings can change. Recheck the current package instructions and keep backups before editing.
  • Perfect high-FPS mission behavior: 60 FPS remains a usable but qualified option, not a guaranteed replacement for the 30 FPS completion profile.

Use the configuration that meets your real priority, keep a clean backup, and change one variable at a time. That approach gives you a correct display, predictable missions and controller support without sacrificing the ability to return to the original game.
