For the classic PC release of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, start with the frame limiter on, choose a resolution your monitor and game build both support, and adjust Visual FX Quality and anti-aliasing gradually. Treat widescreen as an aspect-ratio check rather than a guaranteed fix: the original game can stretch a 4:3 image. These recommendations apply to the original PC game, not Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition.
First, identify which San Andreas you have
Rockstar maintains separate documentation for the classic PC release and for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition. Their system-requirements pages are different products, and a patch or configuration intended for one edition may not apply to the other. Before changing files or looking for a widescreen fix, confirm the game title shown in your launcher, the executable or build you installed, and whether you are running the original release or the Definitive Edition.

The best starting settings for the classic PC release
There is no single universal preset that is correct for every monitor, graphics card, driver, or game build. The official PC manual documents what each control does, but it does not provide a hardware-by-hardware benchmark proving that one resolution, anti-aliasing mode, or Visual FX level is always best. Use the following as a stable starting point, then tune one control at a time.

How to configure the game, step by step
- Confirm the edition and build. Make sure the title is the classic PC release before applying advice from the classic manual or compatibility references.
- Open the game’s display or graphics configuration. Locate the controls named Frame Limiter, Screen Resolution, Color Depth, Visual FX Quality, Anti-Aliasing and Widescreen. Labels can vary slightly by distribution or build, but these are the controls described in the PC manual.
- Turn Frame Limiter on. Apply the setting and play long enough to observe normal driving, combat and camera movement. Do this before changing several image-quality options together.
- Select a supported resolution and color depth. Choose a mode your monitor accepts and that the game build lists. If the display goes blank, wait for the game’s automatic recovery or use the distribution’s configuration reset method rather than repeatedly selecting an unsupported mode.
- Set Visual FX Quality to a middle value. Test a demanding area of the game. If motion is unstable, lower this control before changing resolution. If performance is stable and effects look sparse, raise it one step.
- Adjust anti-aliasing in small increments. Compare the same scene after each change. Keep the highest mode that improves jagged edges without making frame pacing inconsistent.
- Test Widescreen last. Enable it, inspect geometry and the HUD, and then compare with it disabled. A stretched picture is a composition problem, not evidence that the computer is too slow.
- Record the working combination. Note the resolution, color depth, Visual FX level, anti-aliasing mode, frame-limiter state and widescreen state. This makes it easier to undo a change after a driver, monitor or game update.
Why the frame limiter should normally stay on
The classic PC manual documents a normal cap of 30 frames per second. This is a game setting from the 2007 manual, not a modern-display performance benchmark. The limiter is primarily a timing and compatibility control: it keeps the game’s simulation operating within behavior expected by its original PC code.
The manual’s warning is unusually direct: “This will not magically make Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas run better, but rather may make your experience ‘more variable’.” It also says, “We do not recommend un-locking the frame rate.” Those statements describe the official default guidance, not a promise that every computer will show identical behavior.
PCGamingWiki also documents timing-related issues when the frame rate is not limited. An unlocked rate can therefore trade one visible symptom for another: a counter may show a higher number while movement, physics or animation timing becomes less predictable. If the game feels inconsistent, races behave strangely, vehicles appear to accelerate abnormally, or animation timing varies, restore the limiter before lowering image quality.

Choosing resolution and color depth
Use the highest mode that your monitor and game build both support cleanly, but do not assume that a larger number is automatically better. The manual treats screen resolution and color depth as display controls; it does not identify one best resolution for all PCs or displays.
- For a sharp desktop monitor: start with a native or commonly supported mode if the game lists it, then check that text and HUD elements remain proportionate.
- For an older display or unusual panel: select a mode confirmed by the monitor and by the game’s own list. A theoretically suitable resolution that the build cannot initialize is not a useful setting.
- When diagnosing slow performance: lower Visual FX Quality first so you can distinguish effects workload from a display-mode problem. Change resolution only when you have a specific reason, because scaling can alter sharpness without correcting timing.
- When the screen is blank or visibly corrupted: revert to the last known-good mode using the game’s configuration options or the launcher’s reset process. Avoid assuming that a modern desktop resolution is supported by every classic build.
Color depth belongs in the same compatibility check. Keep the value that the game and display handle reliably; the available documentation does not establish a measurable image-quality or frame-rate winner among every possible depth.
Tuning Visual FX Quality without guesswork
Visual FX Quality is the most direct control for trading effects detail against workload. Rockstar’s manual says it changes the depth and amount of in-game effects to better suit the player’s PC configuration. That description supports a practical, repeatable method rather than a fixed preset.
If the game stutters or loses stability
- Leave the frame limiter on.
- Lower Visual FX Quality by one step.
- Repeat the same route or scene where the problem appeared.
- If the result is stable, keep the lower value and test the next higher step later.
This incremental sequence is a troubleshooting method, not a published benchmark. It helps isolate whether effects detail is contributing to the symptom without changing several variables at once.

If performance is stable but the image looks too plain
Raise Visual FX Quality one step and test weather, explosions, traffic and other effects-heavy moments. Stop increasing it when the image improvement is no longer worth reduced consistency. A visually richer setting that introduces uneven timing is usually a worse choice for a playthrough than a slightly lower, stable setting.
Anti-aliasing: improve edges only when the trade-off is worthwhile
Anti-aliasing smooths jagged edges, but the manual only documents selectable modes; it does not name one ideal mode or quantify the performance cost across hardware. Start conservatively, especially if the game already has timing or compatibility problems.
A practical test
- Choose a repeatable scene containing railings, vehicle silhouettes, fences or diagonal building edges.
- Enable the lowest available anti-aliasing mode and compare the same camera angle.
- Increase one level at a time only if the edge improvement is visible at your normal viewing distance.
- Keep the highest level that does not introduce stutter, delayed input or unstable frame pacing.
If anti-aliasing makes the game less consistent, turn it down before reducing resolution. Resolution changes affect the entire image and can add scaling softness, while anti-aliasing is a more targeted quality control.

The original game’s widescreen behavior needs a visual check. The manual says its Widescreen toggle can force a 4:3 resolution into a 16:9 aspect ratio. PCGamingWiki warns that the game normally stretches its image at widescreen resolutions. In practice, a display that fills the panel is not necessarily displaying correctly composed 16:9 artwork.

How to verify the result
- Enable widescreen and load a scene with circular objects, character faces and the HUD.
- Check whether circles remain circular and whether people, cars and buildings look unnaturally wide.
- Look at the edges of the frame. A stretched 4:3 picture may fill the screen while showing the wrong proportions or framing.
- Compare the same scene with widescreen disabled. Decide whether the change corrected composition or merely enlarged the existing image.
If the built-in toggle produces distortion, consult version-specific widescreen compatibility guidance for your installed build instead of assuming that every community fix works with every release. A community widescreen fix may address aspect ratio or field of view differently, and its behavior and compatibility must be checked before installation. Keep a backup of the original configuration and note the exact build so you can remove the fix if menus, HUD elements or cutscenes become unreliable.

A troubleshooting order that avoids random changes
Symptom: motion feels inconsistent or the game behaves strangely
Confirm the classic edition and build, turn the frame limiter on, and retest. Do not begin by raising resolution or anti-aliasing. An unlocked frame rate can create timing-related behavior even when a counter appears higher.
Symptom: the game is slow in effects-heavy scenes
Keep the limiter on, lower Visual FX Quality one step, and repeat the same scene. If stability returns, raise the setting gradually until you find the highest reliable value. Anti-aliasing can then be tested separately.
Symptom: the picture is blurry after changing resolution
Check that the selected mode is supported by the monitor and that the game is not being scaled unexpectedly. Try a different supported mode before changing several quality controls. A soft image is a display-scaling issue, not automatically a graphics-card performance issue.
Symptom: widescreen fills the monitor but characters look wide
Disable the toggle and compare the same scene, then verify the build before seeking a version-specific widescreen solution. The built-in option can force a 4:3 image into 16:9, and the game may stretch widescreen output.
Symptom: a setting change causes a startup or display failure
Return to the last known-good configuration using the game’s configuration or launcher reset method. If you installed a community fix, remove or disable it and restore the backed-up original files. Consult the compatibility reference for the exact build rather than applying an unrelated fix from another edition.
Compatibility expectations on modern PCs
A newer computer does not guarantee that every classic-port problem disappears. Rockstar’s classic requirements guidance notes that some hardware classes may be incompatible. That is a compatibility limitation, not proof that your graphics card lacks performance. Check the official Rockstar requirements and compatibility notes for the original release.
Do not transfer settings advice from the Definitive Edition simply because both products share a name. The Definitive Edition has its own requirements page and a different technical base. If a fix mentions a specific executable, patch, launcher or configuration file, verify that it matches your edition and build before changing anything.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Unlocking the frame rate as a first step: a higher counter does not guarantee smoother play and can make timing more variable.
- Assuming native resolution is always supported: the monitor may accept a mode that the classic game build does not initialize correctly.
- Changing every option at once: you lose the ability to identify whether frame limiting, effects, anti-aliasing or display scaling caused the improvement or failure.
- Judging widescreen by screen coverage alone: a full panel can still contain a stretched 4:3 image.
- Applying a Definitive Edition fix to the classic game: separate products require separate compatibility guidance.
- Treating a 30-fps cap as a benchmark: it is the documented normal game setting from the 2007 manual, not a claim about what modern hardware can render.
Final checklist before you keep a preset
- The installation is confirmed as the classic/original PC release.
- The frame limiter is on unless you have a specific, version-matched compatibility reason to test otherwise.
- The chosen resolution and color depth are supported by both the monitor and game build.
- Visual FX Quality has been tested in a demanding scene, not only in a quiet interior.
- Anti-aliasing improves visible edges enough to justify its cost.
- Widescreen has been checked for proportions, HUD placement and framing.
- Any community fix is matched to the exact build and can be removed with the original files restored.
For most players, the dependable answer is simple: keep the limiter on, use a supported display mode, tune Visual FX Quality before chasing cosmetic gains, add anti-aliasing only when it visibly helps, and verify widescreen by looking at geometry rather than trusting the toggle.
