There is no universal preset that is optimal for every system. For PC, start with the game’s detected configuration at your display’s native resolution, then change one graphics option at a time and retest the same activity in a busy Online session. That produces a reliable balance between clarity and frame-time stability without promising an FPS gain that your hardware may not deliver.

Identify your platform and PC edition first
GTA V is not one identical graphics target across every device. PC Enhanced and PC Legacy have separate system requirements and may expose different performance characteristics. Do not use Enhanced requirements as a test of whether a Legacy installation is supported, and do not assume a setting that behaves well in Story Mode will behave the same way in a crowded GTA Online lobby.
| Edition | What is established | How to use that information |
|---|---|---|
| PC Enhanced | Rockstar’s recommended configuration, updated December 10, 2025, is Windows 11, an Intel Core i5-9600K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 16 GB dual-channel memory, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 or AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT with 8 GB VRAM, and a DirectStorage-compatible drive. Minimum requirements are Windows 10 build 1909 or later, an Intel Core i7-4770 or AMD FX-9590, 8 GB RAM, a GTX 1630 or RX 6400 with 4 GB VRAM, and a 105 GB SSD. | Use the recommended row as a reference for a modern Enhanced target, not as a guarantee of a particular FPS. Falling below it does not identify one specific setting as the cause of poor performance. |
| PC Legacy | Legacy has a separate requirements list on Rockstar’s PC requirements page. The exact Legacy entries are not reproduced here. | Check the Legacy section for your installed edition. Do not transfer Enhanced CPU, GPU, memory or storage requirements to Legacy. |
| Console | Rockstar’s current update coverage includes PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. | Use the graphics and display modes exposed by your console edition and television or monitor; there is no documented single preset that is optimal for every console display. |
Record a baseline before changing anything
Write down the variables that determine whether a change is useful:

- Platform and, on PC, Enhanced or Legacy.
- CPU, GPU and installed system memory.
- Internal game resolution and the display’s native resolution.
- Display refresh rate and whether variable refresh is enabled.
- Your practical target, such as the highest stable frame rate your system can sustain, rather than a number chosen without regard to the display.
- The location and activity used for comparison: for example, driving through a dense area, flying, firefighting or joining a busy public lobby.
Use the game’s detected or default configuration as the starting point. Play the same route for several minutes, then repeat it after each individual change. A setting that looks faster in an empty test area may provide no benefit when players, traffic, weather and effects fill an Online session.
Choose resolution and frame pacing before visual details
Keep native output when clarity is the priority
Run the game at the display’s native output resolution whenever your hardware can meet your target. Native rendering avoids the softness caused by scaling a lower image to the panel. If performance remains below target after tuning expensive options, lowering resolution is a valid final step, but it changes image detail more visibly than reducing one or two effects.
Set a realistic frame target
Use the game’s frame-limit control when a stable ceiling is preferable to a frame rate that swings widely. Choose a cap your system can hold during the busiest part of your test route, not the peak number seen while looking at an empty road. The Rockstar PC parameter reference documents a frame-limit option, but it does not prescribe one universal value.

Separate smoothness from rendered FPS
Uneven frame delivery can feel unpleasant even when an FPS counter reports a high average. Repeat the same test after each change and watch for sudden pauses, hitching or large swings rather than judging only the highest number. If the game is consistently below target, tune graphics. If it pauses, crashes or fails to launch, follow the repair path later in this guide instead of lowering every setting.
PC graphics settings: change the expensive options in small steps
Rockstar’s PC parameter reference confirms controls for grass, level-of-detail distance, shadows, post effects, reflections, textures, water, frame limiting and other graphics options. It is a control reference, not a recommended preset. The following order is a practical way to isolate trade-offs while preserving image quality.
Rank #2
- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Grass quality
Grass is a sensible early test when performance drops outdoors or while driving through vegetation. Lower it one step, repeat the same route and keep the change only if frame delivery improves enough to matter. Do not lower it automatically on every system: if your target is already stable, retaining higher grass may be preferable for visual detail.
Level-of-detail distance
Level-of-detail distance controls how far detailed geometry and world objects remain visible. Test it while driving or flying, where distant scenery is constantly entering view. Reduce it incrementally if the GPU or CPU struggles in dense areas. Watch for obvious object pop-in; if the image becomes distracting, restore the previous step and try another option instead.

Shadows
Shadows can be costly in scenes with many buildings, vehicles and light sources. Lower the shadow setting one increment and compare a repeatable route at the same time of day if possible. Keep enough shadow detail to preserve depth around vehicles and buildings; a large reduction may make the scene look flatter even when the frame rate is unchanged.
Post effects
Post effects cover processing applied after the scene is rendered. Change this setting gradually and check both motion clarity and visual artifacts. If a lower level makes the game easier to read during fast driving without solving the underlying frame-time problem, revert it and test another setting rather than stacking several changes at once.
Reflections
Reflections are most visible on cars, wet roads, windows and water. Test them in a reflective environment, not only in a dry rural area. Reduce the option if those scenes cause sustained drops, but retain higher reflections when your target is already stable and vehicle appearance matters more than a small theoretical gain.
Rank #3
- Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
- Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
- Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
- Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.
Texture quality
Texture quality mainly changes surface detail. Keep it as high as your available video memory can support without streaming pauses or texture pop-in; if you see hitching while entering new areas, test a lower level. Unlike reducing resolution, lowering textures can preserve the overall scene’s sharpness while reducing memory pressure, but the result depends on the installed GPU and edition.
Water quality
Water settings deserve a targeted test near the coast, rivers or during rain. If your regular activities rarely include water and performance is already stable, changing this option may have little practical value. If coastal driving or storms trigger drops, lower it one step and compare the same location again.
Population density and variety: use the historical 75% figure correctly
NVIDIA’s Grand Theft Auto V PC Graphics & Performance Guide described 75% population density as a tested “sweet spot” on its historical PC test setup: the scene remained suitably busy while leaving some performance for other effects. That measurement dates from 2015 and is not a current universal recommendation for PC Enhanced, PC Legacy or every GTA Online lobby.
Use 75% as a starting experiment only. Compare it with your current value in a dense city route and a busy Online session. If the CPU is the limiting factor, reducing population density or variety may help more than lowering a GPU-heavy visual option; if the GPU is saturated, another setting may be the better trade. Keep whichever result produces the steadier frame delivery you can actually observe.
Use a controlled tuning sequence
- Reset to a known baseline. Apply the game’s detected or default configuration, select the supported native output resolution and record your target frame rate.
- Test a repeatable scenario. Use the same route, weather where practical and activity. Include a busy GTA Online situation because the built-in benchmark does not represent every heavy lobby scenario.
- Change one option. Start with the setting most likely to affect the symptom you observed: grass, level-of-detail distance, shadows, post effects, reflections, textures or water.
- Repeat the route. Record whether the average feeling, hitching and worst moments improved. Do not keep a change merely because an FPS counter briefly peaked higher.
- Restore changes that do not help. Returning to the previous value prevents several unrelated compromises from accumulating.
- Set a frame limit only after tuning. Cap the game at a level your system can sustain in the heaviest part of your test. Recheck Online play after applying the cap.
- Save a profile. Note the final settings and the edition so an update or driver change can be compared with the same baseline.
NVIDIA reported that repeated passes through its four benchmark scenes varied by approximately plus or minus 5 FPS. Its guide used ten baseline runs and five passes per setting to reduce that variance. Those figures describe NVIDIA’s historical methodology, not a current GTA Online performance statistic, so repeat tests rather than treating one run as proof.

Build a decision profile instead of copying a preset
| Your priority | First action | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum image clarity | Keep native resolution and retain textures where memory allows; lower one costly effect at a time. | Whether the target remains stable in a busy Online scene. |
| Stable frames in dense city areas | Test population density, level-of-detail distance, shadows and reflections in a repeatable downtown route. | CPU-side stutter, distant-object pop-in and sustained drops. |
| Outdoor or weather-related drops | Test grass, water and post effects near vegetation, water and rain. | Whether the same effect recurs in the same location after each change. |
| Streaming or texture hitching | Test texture quality and verify that the installation and driver are current. | Pauses while entering new areas, missing textures or delayed detail. |
| High-refresh display | Choose a sustainable frame cap and evaluate frame-time consistency, not just peak FPS. | Whether the cap is maintained during the busiest activity. |
Do not use graphics settings to fix crashes, freezes or launch failures
A consistently low frame rate is a graphics-tuning problem. A crash, freeze, installation error or failure to launch can indicate a patch, driver, file or graphics-API problem. Lowering grass or shadows cannot repair a damaged installation.
General PC repair sequence
- Install the latest GTA V patch available for your edition.
- Update the GPU driver. Rockstar Games Customer Support’s troubleshooting page says: “Update your drivers to the versions shown here (or higher).”
- Verify the game files using the launcher’s file-verification function.
- Restart the PC and retest the same activity before changing additional graphics options.
Rockstar’s general PC troubleshooting guidance was updated October 7, 2025. Apply those steps for persistent crashing, freezing, installation problems or unexplained poor performance before assuming a visual option is responsible.
ERR_GFX_STATE at launch
For the specific ERR_GFX_STATE launch error, Rockstar’s support guidance, updated June 27, 2025, advises trying DirectX 12 instead of Vulkan. It also notes that rolling back a driver may help when the latest driver remains problematic. This workaround is symptom-specific; do not switch APIs routinely when the game is launching and running normally.
Do not chase an obsolete defect
Rockstar’s historical Title Update 1.70 notes recorded a PC Enhanced 120 Hz cap issue when Frame Limit was Off, fixed in March 2025. Treat that as a resolved historical issue rather than an unresolved current defect. If a similar behavior appears after a later update, check the current patch notes and support guidance first.
Console guidance
On PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, open the graphics or display options available in that edition and choose the mode that matches your television or monitor. Some console editions expose performance or fidelity choices while others provide fewer controls. The reviewed Rockstar material establishes the supported platforms and current update coverage, but it does not document one current menu preset that is optimal for all console displays.
Best Value
- 1800R curve monitor the curved display delivers a revolutionary visual experience with a leading 1800R screen curvature as the images appear to wrap around you for an in depth, immersive experience

Start by confirming the console output resolution, refresh setting and television game mode. If the game offers a performance-oriented mode, compare it with a fidelity-oriented mode in the same Online activity. Keep the mode that meets your priority: steadier motion for driving and combat, or higher visual detail when frame delivery is already acceptable. If the console freezes or crashes, use the platform’s update and installation-repair procedures rather than treating the issue as a graphics-setting problem.
Variable-refresh displays are optional
NVIDIA’s GTA V guide discusses G-SYNC monitors as a way to make gameplay feel smoother. A compatible variable-refresh-rate monitor can reduce visible tearing and make uneven frame delivery less distracting when the GPU and display are configured correctly. It does not raise the number of frames the game renders, guarantee a stable frame rate or replace in-game tuning.
Match the monitor’s supported refresh range with your GPU and enable the feature only after confirming that the display connection and driver support it. If your system cannot sustain the display’s target refresh, lower the in-game frame target or graphics load first. Buying a new monitor is optional, not a prerequisite for clearer visuals or better GTA Online performance.
When to stop tuning
Stop changing settings when the game meets your chosen target in the heaviest activity you regularly play, the image remains clear at your preferred resolution and no new hitching appears. More changes are not automatically better. Keep a written record because title updates, driver releases and switching between Enhanced and Legacy can change the result.
The useful definition of “best” is therefore conditional: the highest visual quality your particular edition and hardware can sustain with consistent frame delivery in the GTA Online situations you actually play. Use the historical NVIDIA figures only as context, use Rockstar’s parameter list to identify available controls, and use Rockstar’s support steps when the symptom is instability rather than ordinary graphics load.
