1. Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition — the closest grounded urban-crime fit
Why it is the best first recommendation
Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition occupies the middle ground many GTA players actually want: an open city, vehicles, criminal factions and a campaign that keeps pushing the protagonist through a defined story. PlayStation describes the release as “the critically acclaimed, award winning open-world action adventure” reworked, rebuilt and remastered for PlayStation 4. The Hong Kong setting gives it a distinct identity instead of presenting another version of a familiar American city.
The game is a particularly good answer to the request for “serious missions” because the campaign is directed rather than being only a collection of disconnected activities. You move through a crime narrative with cinematic beats, while driving and street encounters connect the larger missions. It feels closer to a crime film than to an amusement-park sandbox.

How driving fits the experience
Driving is central enough to make the city feel like a place you travel through, not merely a menu between missions. Cars and motorcycles support pursuits, getaways and ordinary movement around Hong Kong. The important distinction is emphasis: vehicles serve the campaign’s momentum, while the game’s signature action often happens on foot. If your definition of realism is a driving simulator with detailed vehicle handling, this is not that. If you mean believable urban movement inside a crime story, it is the strongest match on this list.
Mission structure and combat trade-off
The defining difference from GTA is the amount of hand-to-hand combat and stunt action. Fights are more prominent, and the game frequently stages action around environmental objects and cinematic movement. That produces a more choreographed feel than a firearms-first sandbox. Missions therefore alternate between driving, investigation-style movement and close combat instead of relying on long stretches of shooting.
This emphasis is a benefit when you want variety and a personal, physical protagonist. It is a drawback if your priority is realistic traffic behaviour, broad vehicle customisation or a gunplay-heavy campaign. The serious tone also does not mean every moment is strictly realistic: the game uses action-movie exaggeration to keep encounters dramatic.
Choose it when
- You want a contemporary Asian city and a focused crime campaign.
- You prefer missions with clear narrative direction over a purely systemic sandbox.
- You enjoy driving but also want substantial melee combat and stunt sequences.
- You are comfortable with cinematic action taking priority over simulation-level vehicle physics.
2. Watch Dogs 2 — the best systemic modern city
What makes its open world different
Watch Dogs 2 is the right choice when “realistic” means a city that reacts to your actions. Ubisoft’s product description promises to “Explore a massive and dynamic open-world offering an incredible variety of gameplay possibilities.” The central idea is not to recreate a gangster’s routine; it is to let you manipulate connected urban systems and decide how an objective unfolds.
The contemporary San Francisco-style setting supplies dense streets, public spaces and infrastructure for experimentation. You can approach an objective through hacking, vehicles, remote tools or direct movement. That makes the world feel interactive in a way that a conventional mission map may not.

Driving is one option, not the whole identity
Cars remain useful for reaching targets, creating distractions and moving through the city, but driving is not the sole measure of success. A player who wants every mission to revolve around a vehicle may find the focus diluted. The game’s strength is the way driving sits alongside hacking and environmental manipulation: a vehicle can be transport, cover, a moving obstacle or part of a chain reaction rather than simply the thing you drive from point A to point B.
That flexibility also means the handling should be judged as part of a toolset, not as a standalone driving model. The game is less suited to someone seeking a grounded gangster simulator and better suited to someone who values emergent solutions.

Mission design is shaped by the hacker premise. Objectives invite you to use city systems, surveillance and vehicles, so two players can produce different-looking solutions. The tone is lighter and more playful than a traditional crime drama, even when the stakes are serious. You are not simply climbing a criminal hierarchy; you are operating as a technologically equipped group challenging institutions and exploiting connected infrastructure.
That distinction matters after GTA. If what you miss is a sober mob story, the hacker framing may feel too breezy. If what you miss is the freedom to improvise in a living city, it can be more satisfying than a linear crime campaign.
Choose it when
- You want modern urban systems to be as important as weapons.
- You enjoy solving missions through multiple approaches instead of following one prescribed route.
- You want vehicles available without making traditional car culture the entire game.
- You prefer a contemporary hacker tone to a grim gangster narrative.
3. Red Dead Redemption 2 — the strongest realism and world detail
Why it belongs in a GTA-alternatives list
Red Dead Redemption 2 changes the period and the vehicle question, but it answers the deeper request for believable spaces and serious missions better than almost any modern-city substitute. Rockstar’s store describes “a vast recreation of the American West.” The world is historical, so there are no cars, traffic lights or contemporary streets; horses provide the equivalent of personal transport and make distance part of the experience.

That change in traversal is deliberate. Travel takes time, and the rhythm between missions is slower than in a city sandbox. In return, the environment, settlements and wilderness are presented as a coherent place rather than a set of disconnected activities. Choose this game for realism of behaviour, atmosphere and detail, not for modern driving.
Traversal when horses replace cars
A horse changes how you read the map. You are managing a living mount, planning routes through terrain and accepting that a journey can be part of the story. There is no equivalent of stealing a car and crossing a city in seconds. Players who specifically want realistic steering, traffic and vehicle chases should not treat the horse as a one-for-one replacement.
For everyone else, the slower pace can make missions feel consequential. Reaching a settlement, preparing for a job and riding back through the landscape creates continuity that fast urban travel often removes.
Outlaw missions and deliberate pacing
The campaign centres on an outlaw gang and uses serious set pieces rather than a purely comic crime loop. Rockstar’s store listing explicitly includes a “Bank Robbery Mission & Gang Hideout.” Those examples show the kind of mission fantasy on offer: organised criminal operations, preparation and the consequences of life outside the law.
The pacing is deliberate. Conversations, rides and camp routines occupy more time than many GTA missions, and gunfights are framed as parts of a broader western drama. This is an advantage if you want character-driven storytelling and a world that appears to continue beyond the immediate objective. It is a disadvantage if you want constant traffic, rapid vehicle swaps and a dense modern skyline.

4. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition — the direct GTA choice
What the collection contains
If the goal is not to find a substitute but to return to GTA, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is the straightforward option. The collection includes GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas. Rockstar describes “brilliant new lighting and environmental upgrades,” high-resolution textures and increased draw distances, while also adding “GTA V-style controls and targeting.”
These updates make the three games easier to approach on modern hardware, but they do not transform their original mission design into a contemporary system. Expect the structure, pacing and challenge conventions of earlier GTA releases alongside the visual and control revisions.
Driving and updated controls
The collection preserves the classic car-focused loop: acquire a vehicle, cross a city, complete a mission and use the open world between objectives. San Andreas receives improved drive-by controls, a practical change for players who found the original aiming scheme awkward. The broader control update aims to make movement and targeting feel more familiar to players who started with later GTA games.
Do not mistake those changes for a new driving simulation. The package modernises access to the older games; it does not replace their handling or mission logic with a new model. Its appeal is authenticity to GTA’s formula, not the most realistic vehicle behaviour available.

Mission design and presentation trade-offs
Three campaigns also mean three different eras of design. You get distinct cities, casts and tones, but you will encounter older checkpointing, navigation and objective conventions. Rockstar specifically documents “the ability to immediately restart a failed mission,” which reduces downtime when a job goes wrong. That convenience helps, especially in missions whose difficulty reflects their original release period.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The collection is best understood as a historical package with modernised presentation. Choose it when satire, crime stories, vehicle theft and the familiar GTA rhythm matter more than the smoother systemic interactions of newer open-world games.
Choose it when
- You want GTA’s own cities, mission structure and tone rather than an alternative interpretation.
- You value three campaigns in one collection.
- You want updated lighting, textures, draw distances and GTA V-style controls.
- You can accept older mission design and the fact that visual upgrades do not equal a new game engine.
How to choose based on the kind of realism you mean
If you mean realistic urban driving
Start with Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition for a city-crime campaign in which vehicles are regularly part of the action. Move to Watch Dogs 2 if you want vehicles integrated with hacking and public systems rather than treated as the central fantasy. The GTA Trilogy is the purest car-and-city formula, but its older design makes it a choice for authenticity to GTA rather than modern realism.
If you mean serious missions and believable stakes
Sleeping Dogs gives you the most direct urban crime narrative. Red Dead Redemption 2 is the stronger choice when historical setting and character-driven outlaw drama are acceptable. Watch Dogs 2 has mission variety and systemic depth, but its hacker tone is less like a conventional gangster story.

Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 for the most deliberate environmental presentation. Choose Watch Dogs 2 when “alive” means connected systems that you can manipulate. Sleeping Dogs prioritises a directed city-crime experience, while the Trilogy offers three stylised cities whose appeal is rooted in GTA’s original design.
If you want the least compromise after GTA
Buy the Trilogy. It keeps the series’ own mission language, vehicles and satirical crime tone while adding presentation and control updates. Every other recommendation changes at least one pillar: Sleeping Dogs foregrounds melee combat, Watch Dogs 2 foregrounds hacking, and Red Dead Redemption 2 replaces cars with horses and moves the story to the American West.
Quick Recap
What to expect before you buy or install
- Check the edition name. The recommendation is specifically Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, not an unspecified release; the PlayStation description identifies this version as reworked, rebuilt and remastered for PlayStation 4.
- Decide whether modern cars are essential. Only the urban choices provide contemporary vehicle travel. Red Dead Redemption 2 is a realism recommendation built around horses and historical movement.
- Set expectations for tone. Watch Dogs 2 is hacker-focused and playful; Sleeping Dogs is more crime-film oriented but leans heavily into martial-arts action; the Trilogy delivers GTA’s established satire; Red Dead Redemption 2 is a measured western drama.
- Do not use a numeric “realism” ranking. No authoritative source establishes a cross-game score for driving realism or mission quality. Treat the table as a preference guide, not a laboratory ranking.
A practical decision in one minute
- If you want a serious modern-city crime story with substantial driving, choose Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition.
- If you want to hack, drive and manipulate a reactive contemporary city, choose Watch Dogs 2.
- If world detail and outlaw storytelling outweigh modern transport, choose Red Dead Redemption 2.
- If you want the original GTA formula across three campaigns with updated presentation, choose Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.
