For most cloud-first small businesses in India, start with Zoho Books. It combines GST-compliant invoicing, online return filing, e-way bills, B2B e-invoices, banking and double-entry accounting in one system. Choose TallyPrime when an accountant-led or desktop workflow is more important than browser-first access. Choose myBillBook when low-cost billing, inventory and straightforward GST reports matter more than deep accounting.
The right choice depends on four questions: how much accounting you need beyond invoices, whether you require desktop or offline work, how complex your inventory and purchasing are, and whether your turnover and transaction types make e-invoicing mandatory. Prices and GST rules change, so confirm the current plan, eligibility and filing requirements before signing up.

What GST software should do for a small business
A useful system is more than a PDF invoice generator. It should preserve the tax and accounting data behind every sale and purchase so that your return, ledger and stock records agree.
#1 Best Overall
- Two-Part Carbonless Invoice Book: Each invoice book has 50 sets of invoices, each with a white/light yellow section, with the yellow section retained in the invoice book to maintain detailed records.
- Consecutively Numbered: Enlarged red 6-digit numbers in the upper right corner of each invoice receipt book help you quickly navigate through your orders.
- Wraparound Divider Flap: A thick folded cardboard divider is integrated into the back of each invoice book for use between each two-part sales order to prevent the written content from rubbing off on subsequent copies of the invoice, resulting in wasted invoices.
- 2 Packs/50 Sets (100 Sets Total): Each invoice book provides 50 sequentially numbered carbonless sets of 2 invoice books for long-term use.
- Customizable Space: Each invoice book for small business has space at the top to add a company seal or sticker.
- Capture the right tax identity: store each customer’s and supplier’s GSTIN, place of supply and registration status, and distinguish registered B2B transactions from other sales.
- Classify products and services: assign the applicable HSN or SAC code and keep the tax component visible on the invoice.
- Calculate and document GST: show taxable value and the relevant tax components, then post the transaction to receivables, payables and ledgers.
- Prepare compliance documents: create GST-compliant invoices, e-way bills and, where applicable, electronically authenticated B2B e-invoices.
- Reconcile and report: compare purchase data with available records, track input tax credit and produce the return reports your accountant needs.
- Control changes: retain an audit trail or edit log so a changed invoice can be explained later.
- Handle the operating work: purchase orders, stock movements, payment follow-up, bank entries, inventory valuation and user permissions may matter as much as the invoice itself.
Do not assume that a button labelled “GST” makes a transaction compliant. Your business still has to choose the correct registration details, tax treatment, exemption and place of supply, and someone must review the return before submission.
Zoho Books: best all-round cloud option
What it covers
Zoho Books states that users can file GST returns online by entering their GSTIN, username and the starting date for their accounts. Its documented GST workflow associates contacts with GSTINs, auto-populates tax components, classifies goods and services with HSN or SAC codes, creates GST-compliant invoices, generates e-way bills and sends B2B e-invoices authenticated electronically by GSTN.
That combination makes it the strongest first evaluation for a business that wants invoicing and accounting in one browser-based system rather than exporting invoice data into a separate ledger. It is particularly useful when an owner, bookkeeper and external accountant need to work on the same current records.

Who should choose it
- A service business that needs invoices, expenses, receivables, payables and a proper ledger rather than billing alone.
- A growing company adding staff or an accountant who needs controlled multi-user access.
- A business that wants to keep GST data, e-invoice records and accounting entries together.
Questions to resolve in a trial
- Whether the selected plan includes the number of users, transactions, branches and automation rules you expect.
- How your accountant handles opening balances, prior-period corrections and return review.
- Whether your bank, payment gateway, point-of-sale or inventory system has a supported integration.
- How data can be exported if you later change systems.
TallyPrime: best fit for an accountant-led or desktop workflow
What it covers
Tally’s official GST material presents TallyPrime as an invoicing and accounting product for Indian businesses. It describes GST invoice creation, e-invoice and e-way-bill generation, input-tax-credit tracking, reconciliation and edit-log controls. Its small-business material also covers export bills, displaying an MSME UDYAM number on invoices and tracking transaction changes.
This feature set suits a business whose books are maintained in a structured ledger by an internal accountant or external accounting office, especially when desktop operation and established processes are more important than a cloud-first experience.
Where it can be the better decision
- Your accountant already works in TallyPrime and has a tested chart of accounts, voucher process and backup routine.
- You need detailed double-entry accounting, reconciliation and transaction-change controls rather than only sales summaries.
- You issue export documentation or need to display an MSME UDYAM number on invoices.
- Internet availability is inconsistent and a desktop-oriented process is acceptable.
What is not established in the available price information
The official page reviewed did not provide a reliably current TallyPrime price. Do not compare it with a monthly cloud subscription until you confirm the current licence, renewal, multi-user and hosting costs for your edition. Also verify how remote access, backups, branch data and accountant collaboration will work in your specific deployment.
myBillBook: billing-first value for retail, wholesale and services
What it covers
myBillBook says it creates GST-compliant invoices containing the party GSTIN, HSN/SAC and tax components. It lists e-way-bill generation, GSTN-authenticated B2B e-invoices, GSTR-1, GSTR-2 and GSTR-3B reports, receivables and payables, ledgers, and inventory updates with every sales or purchase invoice.
Rank #3
- QUALITY INVOICES: Adams Invoice books provide a professional invoice or customer receipt; easily customize by using the extra space at the top and your company stamp
- 50-TWO PART CARBONLESS FORMS: Customers get the perforated white top copy; retain the yellow copy for your records
- WRAP-AROUND COVER: Fold the back cover between sets to keep invoices neat and legible
- CONSECUTIVELY NUMBERED: Large 6-digit numbers help you thumb through invoices quickly
- STOCK UP: Each book includes 50 white/canary sets; order several to keep your favorite forms on hand
That makes it a practical candidate when the daily job is issuing invoices quickly, maintaining stock and following outstanding payments. It may be easier to adopt than a full accounting suite for a small shop or wholesaler, but you should test whether its ledger, reconciliation and accountant controls cover your compliance process.
Published price indication
The page advertises plans starting from ₹199/month. The exact plan limits and inclusions can change, so treat ₹199 as a starting indication rather than a guaranteed price for your required users, branches, invoices or reports.
Who should evaluate it
- Retailers and wholesalers that need stock to increase or decrease automatically with each purchase and sale.
- Service operators that want fast GST billing and receivable tracking without adopting a broad accounting platform immediately.
- Businesses for which subscription cost is a primary constraint.
Checks before migration
- Confirm whether the product supports your required number of items, warehouses, users and invoice series.
- Ask how opening stock, customer balances, supplier balances and historical invoices are imported.
- Check whether your accountant can obtain the reports and exports needed for final return preparation.
- Verify the treatment of credit notes, purchase returns, advances and cancelled invoices in your normal workflow.

GST e-invoicing rules that affect your choice
Turnover threshold
A GSTN/IRP advisory says Notification 10/2023 lowered the B2B e-invoicing threshold to aggregate annual turnover of ₹5 crore and above, effective 1 August 2023. This is an eligibility threshold, not a promise that every invoice from every business must be generated through an e-invoice system. Transaction categories, exemptions and the taxpayer’s registration details still matter.
Thirty-day reporting rule for larger taxpayers
IRIS IRP guidance says that, effective 1 April 2025, taxpayers with aggregate annual turnover of ₹10 crore and above must report e-invoices within 30 days from the invoice date. A system that merely creates a PDF is not enough for an affected taxpayer: your process must transmit the required data within the deadline and retain the response details.
Rank #4
- This value 3 pack of Adams Invoice Books give you 150 two part carbonless invoices with a perforated white customer receipt and yellow duplicates for your records; 3 50-invoice books per pack
- Unique horizontal invoice sheets capture the purchased by and shipped to addresses; a compact 5-9/16 x 8-7/16 page still leaves plenty of room for details on up to 12 items sold
- Wraparound back cover prevents write-through between sets; pull out the perforated white customer receipt and the yellow carbonless duplicates stay behind for your records
- Unique 6 digit invoice numbers help you thumb through orders quickly; blank space up top gives you room for a company stamp—an affordable custom touch
- In value packs with three 50-invoice books for your small business; buy ahead to keep on site or take on the road for pop-up shop sales
What the software cannot decide for you
- Whether your entity crosses the applicable aggregate-turnover threshold.
- Whether a particular supply is exempt or excluded from e-invoicing.
- Which GST registration, place of supply, tax rate, HSN or SAC code applies.
- Whether a correction, credit note or cancellation is legally valid and within the permitted time.
- Who is responsible for reviewing and filing the return.
Have the owner, bookkeeper or tax professional approve these decisions. Configure them once, then review exceptions instead of trusting an unchecked default.
How to choose between the three
- Map your transaction flow. List sales channels, purchase invoices, returns, credit notes, advances, exports, branches, warehouses and payment methods. A product that handles only the simple sale you make today may fail when you add a second channel.
- Decide where the books should live. If several people need current records from different locations, begin with a cloud-first evaluation. If the accountant owns a desktop ledger and controls backups, test TallyPrime’s process before forcing a change.
- Set the accounting minimum. Decide whether you need only invoices and outstanding balances, or also a chart of accounts, bank reconciliation, expense accruals, depreciation, input-tax-credit reconciliation and year-end adjustments. The second group points toward a full accounting product.
- Measure inventory complexity. Count stock locations, units of measure, batches or serial numbers, purchase orders, damaged goods and stock transfers. If stock accuracy drives your business, test a complete purchase-to-sale cycle rather than only creating an invoice.
- Check GST documents with real examples. Use one registered B2B customer, one unregistered customer, an interstate sale, a purchase invoice, a credit note and an e-way-bill case. Confirm that GSTIN, HSN/SAC, tax components and place of supply appear correctly.
- Test the accountant hand-off. Give your CA or bookkeeper a sample export and ask whether it contains the ledgers, invoice registers, reconciliation data and return reports they actually use.
- Calculate total cost. Include subscriptions or licences, extra users, branches, implementation, migration, devices, backups, payment integrations, accountant time and the cost of correcting bad opening data.
- Run a controlled pilot. Keep your existing records intact, import a limited period or a small item set, issue test documents and compare totals with the old system before switching live billing.
Implementation checklist
- Collect master data: legal name, PAN, GSTIN for each registration, addresses, bank details, customers, suppliers, items, HSN/SAC codes, units and opening balances.
- Define invoice rules: numbering series, invoice date, place-of-supply logic, tax components, reverse-charge cases, export details, credit-note process and approval rights.
- Set user roles: separate people who create invoices, approve purchases, reconcile payments and review returns. Do not give every cashier unrestricted access to tax settings or historical entries.
- Configure inventory: opening quantities, valuation method, warehouses, reorder levels and treatment of purchase returns or damaged stock. Reconcile a physical count before going live.
- Connect compliance workflows: enter GST registration credentials only through the product’s official secure process, then test e-way-bill and e-invoice responses with a permitted sample.
- Reconcile opening balances: agree customer receivables, supplier payables, bank balances, stock value and tax ledgers to your last signed-off books.
- Run parallel checks: for at least one normal sales and purchase cycle, compare invoice totals, tax summaries, stock changes and outstanding balances with your previous method.
- Document the routine: write down who reviews daily invoices, who matches purchases, who handles failures and who approves the GST return. Software reduces manual work but does not assign legal responsibility.
Accounting software or invoicing app?
An invoicing app can be enough when you issue a small number of standard invoices, keep inventory simple, have few suppliers and your accountant maintains the books elsewhere. It should still export complete invoice and tax data, not just attractive PDFs.
Choose accounting software when you need a continuous record of income, expenses, receivables, payables, bank movements, inventory and tax adjustments. The extra structure pays off when you have delayed payments, multiple users, purchase credit, stock shrinkage, audits or a tax professional reviewing the same records.
A sensible path is to start with the narrowest system that preserves complete data and has a reliable export. Do not select an invoicing-only tool if migrating later would lose item history, tax classifications, customer balances or invoice numbering.
Best Value
- 2 part carbonless forms (White originals, Canary duplicates) for invoicing customers
- Wraparound cover attached to back to place between sets
- Consecutively numbered within each book
- 50 sets per book
- Space at top for company stamp
Cost and ownership considerations
Subscription price is only one part of the decision. Compare the recurring plan with the time spent correcting invoices, chasing receivables, reconciling tax data and preparing return files. A cheaper tool can cost more if your accountant must rebuild its reports manually.
- Zoho Books: the documented range runs from a free plan for businesses below ₹25 lakh annual revenue to ₹7,999 per month for the Ultimate plan when billed annually. Confirm whether your required users, branches, automation and integrations fit the chosen tier.
- TallyPrime: current pricing was not reliably stated in the reviewed official material. Obtain a written quote that separates licence, renewal, multi-user, hosting, implementation and support charges.
- myBillBook: advertised plans start at ₹199 per month, but exact limits can change. Confirm the price for your users, invoice volume, inventory and reports rather than assuming the entry plan covers them.
Also price the transition: data cleanup, GST master review, training, duplicate invoice prevention, backup storage and accountant time during the first return cycle.
Common failure modes and fixes
Wrong GSTIN or place of supply
Symptom: the invoice shows a customer’s old registration, incorrect state or wrong tax split. Fix: verify the party master against the registration certificate, restrict who can edit it and review the first invoice for every new state or customer type.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →HSN or SAC classification is inconsistent
Symptom: similar items appear under different codes, producing confusing reports. Fix: maintain one approved item master, record the rationale for each code and have your tax professional review changes before they affect a return.
E-invoice or e-way-bill transmission fails
Symptom: the document is printed but lacks the required authenticated response, or the vehicle document is not generated. Fix: check eligibility, credentials, mandatory fields, connectivity and the rejection message; do not treat a local PDF as proof of successful portal reporting.
Opening balances do not agree
Symptom: new reports show unexplained receivables, payables, stock or tax differences. Fix: stop migration, reconcile each control total to the last approved books, correct the mapping and retain a dated import record.
Users overwrite history
Symptom: an invoice changes without an explanation. Fix: use role permissions, document cancellation and credit-note procedures, and choose a product or edition with adequate edit-log controls when auditability is important.
