Best Gray Zone Warfare Settings for Higher FPS and Better Visibility

Start with the developer-backed baseline: use Fullscreen rather than Windowed Fullscreen, set Vertical FOV to 55, cap the game at 120 FPS, and choose the Low quality preset. Then select the upscaler that matches your GPU and raise individual settings only while watching frame-time consistency. This approach gives you a known-stable starting point without assuming that one FOV, preset, or frame-rate target works for every PC.

FOV, upscaling, sharpening and quality changes affect both visibility and responsiveness. Compare them in the same route or scene, keep your resolution and frame-rate cap fixed, and judge 1% or 0.2% lows as well as the headline average. A higher displayed FPS number is not automatically a smoother or clearer game.

Recommended starting profile

The following profile follows MADFINGER Games’ published optimization guidance. Apply it before changing individual options so you can tell which adjustment helped.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Setting Starting value Why it is the baseline
Display mode Fullscreen The official guidance lists Fullscreen, not Windowed Fullscreen, for the performance baseline.
Vertical FOV 55 MADFINGER’s performance-oriented value; a wider value can improve peripheral awareness but may reduce performance and make targets smaller.
Frame-rate limit 120 FPS The published baseline. If your system cannot hold 120 consistently, cap at a lower value it can sustain; a cap cannot create performance.
Quality preset Low Establishes a stable reference point. Increase settings one at a time while watching the FPS counter and frame-time behavior.
Upscaler Match your GPU vendor Use DLSS on supported NVIDIA hardware, FSR on AMD hardware, and XeSS on Intel hardware, then compare clarity and latency at the same output resolution.

After applying the profile, load the same map area you normally play and wait for traversal and shader work to settle. Record the average FPS and the low readings before making another change. Keeping a written baseline prevents a visually attractive setting from hiding a large increase in stutter.

How to choose a useful FOV

FOV is a visibility-versus-performance control, not a universal quality setting. The official performance baseline is Vertical FOV 55, while PCGamesN used 75 as a gameplay recommendation in its 2024 settings coverage. Those values answer different priorities, so neither should be presented as the single correct choice.

When 55 makes sense

A vertical FOV of 55 gives the renderer less peripheral scene to draw and keeps distant targets relatively larger on screen. It is a sensible first choice when you are GPU-limited, use a lower resolution, or want the most predictable frame time. It also provides a clean reference for testing an upscaler or a quality change.

When to test 75

A value around 75 exposes more of the sides of the scene, which can help with close-range awareness and navigation. The trade-off is a wider projection: targets occupy fewer pixels at the same distance, and the extra visible geometry can lower performance. PCGamesN’s value is a practical gameplay example, not a measurement proving that 75 is best for every monitor, aspect ratio or graphics card.

A repeatable FOV test

  1. Choose one route containing foliage, a building interior and a long sightline.
  2. Keep resolution, upscaler mode, sharpening, quality preset and frame-rate cap unchanged.
  3. Play the route at FOV 55 and note average FPS, 1% or 0.2% lows, image stability and how easily you identify distant targets.
  4. Repeat at 65, then 75 if your frame time remains acceptable. Do not compare one value during a quiet scene with another during a firefight.
  5. Keep the widest value that preserves target clarity and a stable low-FPS result for your monitor’s refresh rate.

Upscaling and frame generation by GPU

MADFINGER’s May 1, 2024 guidance separates recommendations by graphics architecture. Use the vendor-aligned option first, then compare modes at the same output resolution. Upscaling can recover GPU headroom, but aggressive modes may soften foliage, thin geometry or distant silhouettes.

Hardware situation Recommended first test What to verify
NVIDIA RTX 40-series DLSS Check fine foliage, weapon edges and motion stability against native rendering or another mode at the same resolution.
AMD graphics FSR Watch for shimmering, temporal breakup and loss of small target details while moving.
Intel graphics XeSS Compare text, foliage and distant contrast with the game’s other available modes.
Older cards, including 30-series and lower, with lower performance FSR with Frame Generation On and Super Resolution set to Performance or Balanced Confirm that the base frame rate is already playable and that generated frames do not introduce distracting latency or artifacts.

Why frame generation is not a substitute for base FPS

Frame generation can increase the number shown by the counter by inserting generated frames between traditionally rendered frames. It does not make the underlying simulation, input sampling or base render complete faster. If the ungenerated frame rate is unstable, the result can still feel delayed or uneven even when the displayed number is high. The cited guidance does not promise a universal gain, so treat Frame Generation as an experiment after you have a stable base rate, not as a guaranteed fix.

Test with the same route and cap. Compare camera pans, quick aim corrections and close-quarters movement rather than looking only at the counter. If aiming feels less direct, turn frame generation off and keep the upscaler without it, or lower the internal-resolution mode until the native frame rate is stable.

Performance versus image-quality modes

Performance modes render fewer internal pixels and usually produce more GPU headroom. Balanced modes retain more detail at a smaller performance cost. The correct choice depends on your resolution, GPU and tolerance for temporal artifacts. At 1080p, a very aggressive mode can make foliage and distant players difficult to separate; at a higher output resolution, the same mode may remain acceptable. Make the decision from motion and target identification in your own play area.

Raising quality without losing smoothness

Low is a reference point, not a mandatory final setting. Once you have recorded it, change one control or preset step at a time. If you raise several options together, you cannot identify which one caused a frame-time spike or a VRAM problem.

  1. Confirm Fullscreen, your chosen FOV and a realistic cap before tuning quality.
  2. Select the vendor-appropriate upscaler and record its mode and sharpening value.
  3. Raise the quality preset one step, play the identical route, and record average FPS plus 1% or 0.2% lows.
  4. If lows deteriorate while the average looks similar, revert the preset and test individual quality controls instead.
  5. Keep a change only when the visual gain is visible during movement and the low-FPS result remains acceptable.

Use the same scene for every comparison. Foliage density, shadow transitions and indoor-to-outdoor moves can create different workloads, so a setting that looks harmless in a quiet room may cause a hitch during traversal. Texture stability and VRAM behavior also deserve attention: a sharper image is not an improvement if assets stream late or the game begins stuttering after a long session.

Visibility checks that matter in a firefight

Judge visibility in motion, not from a paused screenshot. Compare the following five axes together:

  • Target clarity: Can you distinguish a player-sized silhouette from foliage at the distance where engagements normally begin?
  • Foliage and shadow visibility: Do temporal artifacts or crushed dark areas hide movement when you pan?
  • Frame-time consistency: Does the frame-time graph remain even when entering a new area?
  • Input latency: Does aim remain immediate when you make a rapid correction?
  • VRAM and texture stability: Do surfaces remain detailed after extended play, or do they stream in and trigger hitches?

Sharpening can restore edge contrast after upscaling, but excessive sharpening creates halos and crawling detail. Increase it gradually and stop when foliage begins to shimmer. If a mode makes distant targets technically sharper while introducing unstable edges during movement, it is not a practical visibility improvement.

Set a cap your PC can actually hold

The official 120 FPS limit is a starting point, not a promise that the game will reach 120 on your hardware. A frame-rate limit only prevents the renderer from running above a ceiling; it cannot raise a system that already falls below that ceiling.

Use a cap based on the lowest sustained rate in your normal play. For example, if your system fluctuates between 82 and 105 FPS, a cap near a stable value below the fluctuation can feel smoother than an uncapped counter that repeatedly hits a high peak and then collapses. Recheck the cap after changing FOV, upscaling or quality because each change alters the workload.

Stutter, shader compilation and first-session behavior

MADFINGER states that initial gameplay can stutter while the game stabilizes, including short frame lags when visiting some locations for the first time. The team advises players not to close the game immediately when this occurs. A first traversal can involve shader and asset work that is not representative of later passes through the same area.

What to do during the first run

  1. After changing graphics settings, play long enough to visit your usual routes rather than judging the first few seconds.
  2. Note whether a hitch is tied to a location you have not visited since the change.
  3. Repeat the route once. If the hitch diminishes, it was likely part of the initial stabilization process.
  4. If the same spikes persist every run, use the cache and overlay steps below before lowering every quality option.

Clear shader caches

The official support guidance recommends clearing DirectX and NVIDIA shader caches when troubleshooting persistent stutter. Cache interfaces vary by Windows and driver version, so use the cache controls provided by your operating system and graphics driver, then allow the game to rebuild shaders on a subsequent launch. The first run after clearing can stutter again while the new cache is created.

Disable overlays and capture features

Temporarily disable overlays and capture functions, including Instant Replay, to remove another source of frame-time interruption. Test with one change at a time so you know whether the overlay was responsible. Re-enable features individually after the game is stable if you need them.

Disable fullscreen optimizations for the executable

MADFINGER’s support article also recommends disabling fullscreen optimizations on the game executable. In Windows, open the executable’s Properties, choose the Compatibility tab, enable Disable fullscreen optimizations, apply the change and retest Fullscreen mode. If behavior worsens, return the checkbox to its previous state; this is a troubleshooting branch, not a universal performance requirement.

What Update 0.3 changes for tuning

Update 0.3, released May 22, 2025, records several changes relevant to graphics troubleshooting: adjusted lowest settings, support for DLSS 4, a fix for FSR frame-generation frame limits, a VRAM-leak fix and additional rendering fixes. These changes mean that older advice or measurements may not map directly to the current build.

After a major update, rebuild your baseline instead of assuming that the previous preset is still optimal. Check that the game is using the intended upscaler, run the same route twice, and watch for VRAM growth during a long session. If a setting behaves differently after the update, document the build and the exact mode before changing other variables.

Understanding published FPS numbers

PCGamesN reported an average of 67.9 FPS with 35.5 FPS 0.2% lows in a 2024 test. The report also described persistent frame stutter and server rubber-banding. Those figures are historical measurements from that test system and build; they are not a guarantee for your hardware or for later patches.

The 0.2% low is useful because it exposes brief but severe dips that an average conceals. When comparing your own settings, record the same metric where your tool supports it, and keep network rubber-banding separate from rendering stutter. A server correction can look like a graphics hitch even when the GPU frame time is normal.

Practical profiles by priority

Priority Profile Trade-off
Most predictable performance Fullscreen, Vertical FOV 55, Low preset, vendor upscaler in a conservative mode, cap at a stable value below your worst dips Less peripheral view and lower visual detail.
More peripheral awareness Keep the baseline, then test FOV 65–75 without changing other settings Targets appear smaller and GPU workload may rise; retain the wider value only if lows remain acceptable.
Higher image quality Start from Low, raise one quality step, and verify foliage, shadows, frame time and VRAM before keeping it Average FPS may remain close while low readings and traversal hitches worsen.
Older lower-performance GPU FSR, Frame Generation On, Super Resolution Performance or Balanced, with a stable base frame rate first More displayed FPS can come with latency or temporal artifacts; compare actual aiming feel.
Competitive responsiveness Use the lowest upscaling aggressiveness that gives clear targets, disable frame generation if input feels delayed, and cap below unstable peaks You may give up some visual detail or headline FPS.

Troubleshooting decision tree

The average FPS is low everywhere

Return to Fullscreen, FOV 55 and Low. Select the hardware-matched upscaler, use a less demanding mode, and set a cap your system can sustain. If the base frame rate remains below your target, frame generation cannot solve the underlying workload; reduce internal rendering cost or accept a lower cap.

The average is high but movement feels uneven

Inspect the low readings and frame-time consistency. Re-test without overlays, clear shader caches, and complete a second traversal of the same locations. A high average with poor lows indicates spikes rather than insufficient peak throughput.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Distant targets look unstable after enabling an upscaler

Compare Balanced with Performance at the same output resolution and reduce sharpening if edges crawl. If artifacts remain, use the vendor mode that preserves motion stability even when its counter is lower.

Stutter appears only in new locations

Allow the game to finish its initial stabilization pass and repeat the route. Persistent repeats justify the cache, overlay and fullscreen-optimization checks. Do not change FOV, quality and upscaling simultaneously while diagnosing the cause.

Textures degrade or hitches increase during a long session

Track VRAM behavior and test after the Update 0.3 fixes. Rebuild the baseline at Low, then raise settings individually. If the issue follows one option, leave that option lower even when other settings can be increased.

A measurement checklist for every change

  • Record the game build, resolution, FOV, quality preset, upscaler, mode, sharpening and frame-rate cap.
  • Use the same route with an outdoor sightline, foliage, an interior and a first-time area.
  • Capture average FPS plus 1% or 0.2% lows and observe frame-time consistency.
  • Check target clarity while moving, not only while standing still.
  • Separate rendering hitches from server rubber-banding or other network corrections.
  • Keep one change only when it improves the chosen priority without creating unacceptable latency, artifacts or VRAM instability.

This process turns the official baseline into a profile fitted to your monitor, GPU and play style, while keeping every trade-off visible.
