For the smoothest Total War: SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition experience, start with the built-in benchmark at your display’s native 1080p resolution. While diagnosing stutter, turn V-sync off and reduce particle effects, water and sky to Medium or Low. If frame delivery is still uneven, lower resolution one step, then reduce terrain quality and disable distortion effects, HDR, vignette, SSAO and blood effects. Change one group at a time, rerun the benchmark, and verify the result in both a campaign turn and a large battle.

What “best settings” means in the 2026 Complete Edition

The current official PC release is Total War: SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition, which arrived on October 13, 2026 with previously released downloadable content and updates. It is often described as the Shogun 2 remaster, but the practical graphics controls are the familiar ones. There is no single best preset for every computer: your CPU speed, installed RAM, graphics card, target resolution and desired image quality all change the result.

Use the game’s benchmark as a repeatable starting point rather than relying on a preset name. A setting that is comfortable in a small battle can still stutter during a large siege or a busy campaign turn. The goal is consistent frame delivery at your chosen resolution, not an unsupported universal frame-rate promise.

Quick setup for smoother performance

  1. Prepare the system. Close other applications, leave free space on the game drive, disconnect a second monitor temporarily if the system is struggling, and connect a laptop to its charger.
  2. Record your baseline. Note the current resolution, preset and graphics options before changing anything.
  3. Run the built-in benchmark. Let it complete and record the result or, at minimum, whether motion is smooth and whether frame delivery visibly hitches.
  4. Turn V-sync off for diagnosis. This removes synchronization from the troubleshooting equation. If tearing is unacceptable after performance is stable, test V-sync again later.
  5. Reduce the largest documented cost controls first. Set particle effects, water and sky to Medium, then Low if required.
  6. Retest after every change. Rerun the benchmark, then play a representative campaign turn and a large battle.
  7. If the result is still uneven, continue down the order. Lower resolution one step, then reduce terrain quality and disable the listed post-processing effects.
  8. Check memory behavior. Watch system RAM and graphics-memory use in Task Manager or your operating system’s performance monitor. Insufficient VRAM can cause automatic downgrades while a battle or map is loading.

This sequence follows Feral Interactive’s documented order of expected performance impact. Available options can vary with hardware and with other selections in the graphics menu.

Recommended starting profile

Begin with the highest image quality your computer can sustain, then use this table when the benchmark or real gameplay reveals a problem. “Medium” is a useful first compromise because it preserves more detail than Low while removing a large amount of visual workload.

Control First smoothness move What you give up When to change it
Screen resolution Keep native 1080p if stable; drop one step only when needed Image sharpness for overall GPU headroom When every scene is GPU-limited or the benchmark remains slow after smaller changes
Vertical synchronisation Off while diagnosing Synchronization and tear prevention Re-enable only after frame delivery is stable and test whether it introduces latency or uneven pacing
Particle effects Ultra to Medium, then Low or Off Smoke, fire and other battle spectacle When battles hitch during explosions, fires or dense effects
Water Ultra to Medium, then Low Reflection and surface detail When coastal maps or scenes with large water surfaces are heavy
Sky Ultra to Medium, then Low Sky detail and atmospheric presentation When outdoor scenes remain GPU-limited
Terrain quality High to Low Ground detail and landscape definition After resolution, particles, water and sky have been tested
Distortion effects Disable Heat-haze and related screen distortion When you need additional headroom with minimal impact on unit detail
HDR Disable High-dynamic-range lighting appearance When post-processing is costly or the display path does not benefit from HDR
Vignette Disable Darkened screen edges As a low-priority post-processing reduction
SSAO Disable Ambient contact-shadow depth When scenes need a final performance margin
Blood effects Disable when the Blood Pack exposes the option Gore effects When every remaining source of overhead matters

The table expresses Feral’s official performance order, not an independently measured frames-per-second ranking. The size of each gain depends on your processor, graphics card, memory and resolution.

How to tune resolution and synchronization

Resolution

Resolution is usually the broadest GPU-cost control because it changes the number of pixels rendered in every scene. Keep the monitor’s native 1080p output when the benchmark and actual battles are consistent. If the graphics card is saturated, drop only one available step and retest before making another reduction. A lower resolution can look softer, especially on a high-density display, but it generally improves headroom more than turning off a single cosmetic effect.

V-sync

V-sync coordinates completed frames with the display refresh cycle. It can remove tearing, but it may add latency or make uneven frame delivery more noticeable when the system cannot maintain the display’s refresh rate. Turn it off during troubleshooting so you can identify the game’s raw behavior. Once the benchmark and representative gameplay are stable, compare both states and keep the one that feels smoother on your display.

Battle effects that commonly cause dips

Particles

Smoke, fire and similar effects can become expensive when many units fight at once. Move directly from Ultra to Medium; use Low or Off only if large battles still hitch. This change affects spectacle more than the readability of the strategic map.

Water and sky

Water quality can matter on maps with broad reflective surfaces, while sky quality affects outdoor scenes. Medium is the sensible first compromise. Low is appropriate when the benchmark remains heavy and you rarely notice the lost reflections or atmospheric detail.

Terrain

Terrain quality changes ground and landscape detail. Reduce it after testing the larger controls above, particularly if campaign movement and battles remain slow even when effects are modest. Low terrain can make the world look less detailed without changing unit models or interface clarity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Post-processing reductions for the last performance margin

When resolution, synchronization, particles, water, sky and terrain have not solved the problem, disable the remaining effects in Feral’s documented order: distortion effects, HDR, vignette, SSAO and then blood effects if that control is available through the Blood Pack. Distortion, HDR and vignette alter the image’s treatment rather than the strategic information on screen. SSAO contributes contact-shadow depth, so turning it off can make objects look flatter. Blood effects remove gore but leave the underlying battle simulation intact.

How to use the Shogun 2 benchmark correctly

  1. Write down your starting resolution and every relevant quality setting.
  2. Run the built-in benchmark under that exact configuration.
  3. Change one control or one closely related group, such as water and sky, rather than changing the entire preset.
  4. Run the benchmark again and note whether frame delivery, not just the average impression, improved.
  5. Load a representative campaign turn and a large battle. The official documentation provides the benchmark but does not publish a universal FPS target for the Complete Edition.
  6. Stop changing settings when the game is consistent in the situations you actually play. More reductions are unnecessary if they do not solve a visible problem.

Do not treat one short benchmark run as proof that every map will behave identically. Campaign turns, sieges, weather, smoke and large unit formations can stress different parts of the system.

How to stop Shogun 2 Complete Edition stuttering

If the whole game feels slow

  • Check resolution first, because a GPU that is overloaded everywhere needs fewer pixels.
  • Reduce particles, water and sky before sacrificing terrain detail.
  • Check whether system RAM or VRAM is close to its limit while the game is running.

If only large battles hitch

  • Lower particle effects first; smoke and fire are especially costly in crowded engagements.
  • Test terrain quality after the effect settings.
  • Compare a battle after each change rather than judging from the campaign map alone.

If loading causes sudden visual downgrades

SEGA’s performance FAQ warns that insufficient VRAM can trigger automatic downgrades during loading. Close other GPU-heavy applications, reduce resolution or quality, and observe whether the behavior disappears. A downgrade during loading is a memory-capacity warning, not evidence that every quality setting is defective.

If motion is uneven despite an acceptable benchmark

  • Test V-sync off, then on, because synchronization can change perceived pacing and latency.
  • Check for background applications consuming CPU or memory.
  • Run the benchmark again after connecting a laptop charger or disconnecting a second monitor.

System, memory and laptop checks

Feral identifies four major factors in smooth play: CPU speed, built-in RAM, the type of graphics card and the in-game settings. Graphics options cannot fully compensate for a processor bottleneck during simulation-heavy battles, and lowering visual quality will not fix a system that is paging because available RAM is exhausted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • CPU: If frame rate falls mainly when many units are present, the processor may be limiting simulation and draw-call work. Reducing post-processing may help only marginally.
  • RAM: Watch total memory use while loading a campaign and battle. Close browsers, launchers and overlays that consume substantial memory.
  • VRAM: Monitor graphics-memory use and watch for loading-time quality downgrades. Lower resolution and texture-related workload when the dedicated-memory limit is reached.
  • Power: Plug in a laptop. Battery operation can reduce performance through the system’s power policy.
  • Display setup: Disconnect a second monitor temporarily if the system is close to its limits; driving another display can add workload or complicate synchronization.
  • Storage: Keep spare disk space and avoid running unnecessary disk-heavy applications during play.

Steam’s published requirements are legacy baseline information and should not be presented as a performance guarantee for the 2026 Complete Edition. They can indicate whether a computer is broadly within the supported range, but the benchmark and real gameplay are the meaningful tests for your particular hardware.

Choosing a practical target, including “smooth 60 FPS”

Many players search for smooth 60 FPS Shogun 2 settings, but no authoritative Complete Edition-wide FPS table or cross-GPU test establishes a guaranteed combination. Use 60 FPS as a personal target only if your benchmark and demanding battles sustain it. If they do not, prioritize stable frame pacing over a counter that briefly reaches 60 in light scenes.

At 1080p, preserve native resolution whenever possible and lower the documented high-impact controls first. On a weaker GPU, a lower resolution plus Medium particles, water and sky may feel better than native resolution with every effect enabled. On a CPU-limited system, visual reductions may not remove dips when armies become very large; in that case, close background software, use the laptop’s plugged-in performance mode and accept the processor’s limit rather than endlessly reducing image quality.

A repeatable profile for future updates or hardware changes

  1. Save a note containing resolution, preset, V-sync state and each changed option.
  2. Run the benchmark after a game update, driver change or display change.
  3. Test one campaign turn and one large battle under the same conditions.
  4. When upgrading RAM or a graphics card, restore one quality control at a time instead of jumping straight to the highest preset.
  5. Keep the profile that delivers consistent play, even if another profile produces a higher peak number in the benchmark.

Bottom line

There is no universal best preset for Shogun 2 Complete Edition. Start at native 1080p, use the benchmark, turn V-sync off while diagnosing, and reduce particles, water and sky first. Lower resolution, then terrain, and finally the distortion, HDR, vignette, SSAO and blood effects when more headroom is necessary. Validate every change in both the benchmark and demanding real gameplay, while checking RAM, VRAM and laptop power state.
